Where do leaks come from? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

When I was using a Droid Bionic and then the RAZR there was a Cheesecake.apk that had all the info for Moto's dev servers so you could grab ICS builds as they came out for internal testing. Is there anything similar for Samsung (obviously someone found JB for Tmobile) or are ppl using other methods?

Well, son, when two people love each other very much, they hug each other and in a little bit of time, a leak is found. You'll understand when you're older.

My theory and i would bet its correct is samsung, motorola, htc, etc, purposely 'leak' these builds to us because it gives them free testing and debugging without having to take any responsibility for what happens to our phones. They get to see what bugs are in the builds, how we solve them, etc. Its actually a brilliant idea simply because its free beta testing for them

I've often thought this as well, for the same reasons. There would never be an admission of such, but it makes too much sense not to be the case for at least some of it.

I agree to an extent, but sometimes it is best to leave the heavy lifting to those who have traveled this road before.
Not being a jerk, just saying...
To the OP:
If you really want to help and unlock it, really actually asking the right questions from myself (who has been working on the BL unlock for 10 months now), and the others on the dev team. I have not seen one post from anyone on where we started and what we have tried already yet.

I've asked a number of times in the irc and once in the forums about what's been tried. Only apex has responded. A source list would be great. I know that's a hassle. When people do try things they get "leave it to the devs" responses. I've only have the time to follow directions right now. No time for critical/out of the box thinking. But the other people I chat with who do ask and I tell them what I've heard. The only reason I keep up at all is tapatalk is always in my pocket.

Bootloader Unlock Volunteers (Test 3) $50 if works!

Hello,
Today I'm going to try test three of the bootloader unlock (the test two didn't work, please delete it).
I'm not responsible if this hard-bricks your device, no don't blame me.
OK, so pm me please if you want to try it.
Only ONE person with 50+ posts or 10+ thanks may try it (to make sure your not motorola).
So post here first so that we can tell who will test it.
Good Luck,
TCF38012
Why not try on your own device? If I was working a zip flash to unlock the bootloader, I'd be trying on my own phone, rather than enlist others who may possibly brick as result. And, as DX2Trip asked in "test two", have the devs seen this that you're experimenting with?

The prize makes it sound that much more of a risk. (No offence) lol. So odds are more people won't want to take that chance ya know? There have been offers like this in the past. So please don't cast aspersions on the OP.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840550
The OPs offer is rather more generous in comparison.
Why do people always bother to see the post count and reps ? Its surely not a measure of how intelligent a person is.A person might be good but could have joined board late so he might be having less rep and posts. :/ We need to stop skeptical and embrace the help.
@OP : good luck with it.Some more details would be nice. All the best.
Edit : good example of what I wanted to say : http://i.imgur.com/v0H7z.jpg
The idea with the post count requirement was to make sure that motorola didn't create an account and volunteer to test it, and then go and analyze it, patch it if it worked, and then report back that it didn't either way.
Personally, I think that this may be unnecessary (although I have doubts about Moto's character, they definitely don't have the resources to be trolling dev forums in an effort to actively discourage development on year old hardware)
I would volunteer to test this, except that I fall just short of both requirements and I would also like to know what happened with the previous two tests before attempting this one (did they result in a brick?)
Again, as Fall of Enosis mentioned, the lack of replies by OP is a bit questionable. People asked legitimate questions in the first "test thread", and nothing was answered. Any good dev keeps up with his/her threads, and assures people with confidence by laying concerns to rest with some riposte. Not trying to cast any doubt on the OP's abilities, just a mention here of maybe taking a more proactive role in the threads he starts. My suggestion, to be taken or left alone...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
I am just going to assume that you will give us an over view of what you tried. We don't want people to get all pushy but it would be nice.
I'm also assuming the thread (x-files thread) a couple of days ago that ended in pm's was hashed out on back channels and this is a by product.
If I wrong well so be it but that's what happens when there is sooo little info.
Good luck.

[DEV] RIL

Hi. I'm xboxfanj, a developer from over at the epic forums at xda and I think I know how the charge and the stratosphere can fix ril (fix data, call, text) on CM ROMs. Your device has the same cdma chipset as the Galaxy Nexus, which means that we should be able to hack the kernel and ramdisk to support their radios and ril files in system. I did something similar (along with bbelos) on the Epic with the Nexus S 4G radios. I don't have a stratosphere or a charge, so I would need testers and helpful developers. Assuming the galaxy nexus and stratosphere kernel sources are similar to the epic's and Nexus S 4G's, the modem control files will be in drivers/misc/samsung_modemctl in the kernel sources. Then we will have to add the correct lines to kconfigs, makefiles, and defconfigs to enable it to build. Then, we will need to add some permissions in the ueventd files to let the modem files have the correct permissions. And we will have to get rid of some things in init.device.rc. then all we'll need to do is change build.prop to use the correct ril, and throw the files in.

One more thing, apparently the Galaxy Nexus uses a slightly different LTE chip (you guys use the CMC220, they use the 221), so I'm not sure if LTE will work or not once we get this going. And the kernel drivers for radio/modem are in drivers/misc/modem_if in the Galaxy Nexus. The Charge ones are in drivers/misc/samsung_modemctl, so I guess those won't be needed, and we'll have to change all the config files to not use modemctl and use modem_if instead.
You NEED to get a hold of JT1134. He has ported CM9 and CM10 to us, but the only thing he could get to work on the radio side was calls and sms. No data (not even mms). Those builds can be found at RootzWiki (or his github if you know it).

in any event, welcome to the community, hope you are able to stay around for awhile. we always enjoy having more experienced folks around (especially developers).
i think right now, most charge owners would be happy with a custom FP5 kernel. currently, IMNUTS is working on this (despite him no longer having the Charge), so you might want to get in touch with him on any additional insight.

Depressing lack of development

Is anyone else kind of depressed by the lack of development on this device? We got S-Off within about 1 week of release, then after that two custom recoveries, one de-bloated and optimized stock ROM, and one kernel...and that's about it.
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the work the Firewater guys put into getting us S-Off, Jcase getting us the initial temp-root, and Faux and iB4STiD putting out their respective releases, I really do. And with Xposed and the various modules, there's little I'm missing on this from my days on AOKP and other feature-rich ROM's. It's just weird that the AT&T version, for instance, already has almost 10 ROM's. Are the VZ M8 dev's missing something for our device that's preventing them from porting ROM's or creating new ones? Or is there just a lack of interest for the VZW M8? Or are other dev's working on releases and just keeping it quiet?
They just released S-off last week. Give them some time.
Yeah, it's probably just my chronic impatience kicking in...

I completely agree with shojus. I was fine with the idea of not getting s-off for a few months after release. We got s-off a week after the phone was released on VZW. That's absurd!! The verizon got S-off before the M8 was fully released! I couldn't be happier with the devs in this community and look forward to the goodies they bring for this device. Personally, I'm waiting for a GPE ROM as I'm sure many of us are. I know there's one in the works as we speak.

Good luck,
Have a great day!
I like the phone build and big screen I love the stockness of cm12.1
Why not get a Nexus 6, it's even bigger than the note 5, cheaper and a very capable device. Also the note 4 has many aosp roms

If we don't remove insults, curse words and other inappropriate or off topic things, then it might as well be /b/. Everyone is shown the rules prior to joining, and are asked if they agree.
It was unnecessary for warrior 175 to say what he said also.i apologize to the forum, but he needs to check himself

i agree i had a note 4 i had to be on aosp because my phone was just crappy on touchwiz. so slow no whatever how much tweaking i did
sold it i don't think note 5 needs aosp because it is a crazy fast phone, with new rom coming up soon we'd be super happy
but i'd love to see cm13 one dday but i doubt it

Sounded like a demand for a dev to make CM12, that's why I said build it. I didn't curse at you or say anything inappropriate.
Regardless, cheers. Hopefully someone does build it.
