I'm coming from a galaxy nexus. I always used 240 dpi because I like things small on my screen. I have rooted and unlocked my s3 what's some dpi I can use? Can 240 be used? What's the lowest you can go and have everything still function? Anyone experiment with this yet?

From my experience 240 is the lowest you can go if you want all the apps in Google play to be compatible. Any lower and you run into compatible issues like you won't be able to install Netflix Facebook and a number of other high profile apps.
But I use 240dpi too and anything more seems way too big. So with any ROM I always change to 240 in build prob.

240 works with stock rom and touch wiz and stuff?

Yes 240 works with stock ROM (but I would think u need root in order to change the dpi)
And no touchwiz doesn't work in 240. You need another launcher like go launcher or apex launcher (the one I currently use at the moment)

I have always wondered about changing dpi within a ROM... is it similar in concept to changing resolution on your PC? Obviously your monitor retains its native resolution but the GPU is outputting something else?

If you change the DPI before you install a different luncher that when you start up ur device touchwiz will keep crashing, you will have to wait until Google play picks up that an app has an update in order for u to get to get to Google play to download the launcher.
If possible install the launcher first, then root, change DPI and ur all set.

They have apps in the market place that changes the DPI but I always set it myself through the build.prop. file
From my understanding its similar but not entirely the same. ur not taxing the GPU any more than normal. (As far as I know android doesn't use GPU to render the interface, its not entirely hardware accelerated)

Use nova launcher and set dpi to 240 and reboot. Loving it. Reminds me of my nexus.

I don't know if anyone mention this but I noticed that if you buy apps from Amazon Appstore, most apps work with no issues even though Android Market says that it's not compatible and won't let you down load.

You maybe right. I have my density change to 200 vs 240.

good to know, when lowering the density the market doesn't let you download them

Works flawless on Galaxy S III Skyrocket R4 ROM! Things look much more "finished" all lined up.
Can get more icons on less pages, leaving wallpaper more visible too.

Wallpaper won't display properly. If I choose an already downloaded image and set it, its like blown up and distorted. I use zedge mostly and if I set it from inside the app it displays properly. Anyone else experiencing this?

Nice work. I run 190 dpi and instead of stretching it out it centers everything in the smaller, 240 dpi setting.
Guess I should go to the original thread and report it.

Interesting. I haven't tried changing the DPI on it. I can look at the layout XMLs and see if I can't get it to scale properly. May take some time though.

Not sure. I either use Live Wallpapers or use QuickPic to set the Wallpaper. What ROM are you using?
I have, however, noticed that I sometimes have to set the Live Wallpaper more than one time to get it to take....will have to look into that one.

Sorry if this has been covered, i can't search this particular forum with Tapatalk
Has anyone been able to properly set their wallpaper with landscape proportions rather than portrait? Even when I select my wallpaper of choice, and select the ridiculous cropping I'm forced upon, my wallpaper has large black gaps in any screen other than my middle screen.
I've tried multiple launchers to no avail, the best I can do is to use Holo Launcher and disable scrolling wallpaper; this is not the desired effect.
Is there something I'm missing here?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
The wallpaper should be sized 1440x1280 for scrolling to work, 720x1280 for just setting an image as a wallpaper. I use a combination of Apex launcher and I set my wallpaper using "Quickpic" which is available in the Play Store. I think other suggestions include "Zedge" but I have no experience with the app.

182 and no. There is a multi dpi zip for ics/jb roms you can flash. Just do a quick search...
190/191 and some apps will be "compatible" some days, and others wont on other days. It's hit or miss with me
I'be been running 213 for 5 months or so. Haven't have any issues until I hit Scott's latest Beanstock build. Things are off center with Trebuchet.
No market issues to speak of though.

How do you change icon size on this phone without rooting and while using the Google launcher? Not quite ready to root, yet. And I like the default launcher other than the icon size. A bit big for me.
Thanks.
