Moto implementing a root checker on ICS - Motorola Atrix 2

Guys check this out.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/0...ndwich-builds-for-its-phones-purpose-unknown/
I'm gonna check if the leak has this and edit with results.
Edit: The root check is present in the Atrix 2 ICS leak.
Stock recovery
0/0 if you never rooted
1/1 if you are rooted
0/1 if you are not rooted but have been rooted in the past.
Thanks to Jim for this one. > 1/0.... that says that you were not rooted, but had an altered rom image.
Update: Extra info from Jim.
Ok so the first number is how many times total the phone has been rooted, and the second number is currently rooted or not.
so:
qe: 2/1 means it has been rooted twice before and it is currently rooted.

Maybe devs can find a way to reset it. I'm gonna follow the dev who found this on twitter to see if he comes up with something.

This is already on our phones if you are running the leak.
Remember the droid on his back with the yellow exclamation point and the 1/0.... that says that you were not rooted, but had an altered rom image.

Somebody can take a high res pic of their stock recovery screen? Make sure it shows the ATT logo. It's for Android Police.

Jim, I know this reference is more for flashing, but is it out of reach to say that we could see a "flash counter" eliminator for both flashing (if at all necessary) and something similar to the 'no flash counter' to go along with this stupid root checker?

This seriously cuts it for me boys. I have had nothing but Moto phones up to now. No moto phones after the A2 for me. PERIOD. What a shady, crappy company.
I was gonna give em a chance for a while but this is f'n overkill.
SO done with them.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again...
...never another Motorola phone. Either they're dicks themselves or they let the carriers push them around and be dicks through them. Either way, eff 'em.

Asap I'm getting an SGS3, before they ban Samsung products due to the crapple lawsuit. Love the hardware of moto devices, hate their software actions.

You guys are ridiculous. I know this is XDA, but Jesus, take some responsibility for screwing up your own phones. If you root your phone and screw it up, then that's on you. Motorola doesn't owe you ANYTHING. How can you call Motorola a shady, crappy company, when you are giving suggestions on committing fraud. If there is a workaround, that's great, but you can't get upset over a company implementing check that lets them know if you've voided your warranty and caused your own phone to fail.
Don't get my wrong, I'm all for rooting your phone and doing whatever you want to it, but you have to take responsibility for your own actions.

Their shady and crappy because they say one thing and do another.
Most people here will/do take responsibility when they make a boo-boo.
The problem is that moto has their head so far up into the rectum they keep on doing stupid s**t

Mess up, or simply dont like the color, just microwave that sucker and send it back!:victory:

I for one am not too worried. I'm happy with what I do to my devices and don't care if they know. I'm sure devs have been in it now. So on to the next piece of the puzzle...

If it's a part of the official bootloader unlock framework, then it's acceptable. Otherwise, it seems sinister :-\. Designed only to deny warranty.

[Q] Bricked?

My wife works for US Cellular and is having a complete fit about me updating my phone and rooting it !!!! She is afraid of it being bricked or having some issue with it down the road that i would have to send it out and it having to be worked on and DATA TECH seeing that it has done.. has there been any issues with the froyo update bricking phones i've looked and looked and not seen that it has.. also rolling it back to stock hasnt had and issues either has it ...
None that I know about. Besides you can always do an odin restore to 2.1 and it will be like it just came out of the box.

I work for US Cellular. This phone is my work phone, and I develop on it. I'm 99.9% positive that you cannot brick these phones by rooting and updating them, or flashing anything to them for that matter. As long as you follow directions you should be fine. When using Odin, don't flash anything to the Phone portion. Only flash to the Pit and PDA portions. Also, never flash anything that isn't for the Mesmerize. I don't care that other people have not had problems with it, It's not worth the risk to the average person. Also, read everything that you can and ask questions.
Come hang out in the irc room with us if you need anything.
Thank you...so far froyo is working well haven't rooted yet.. What are the benifits to rooting?

Rooting allows you the ability to get to the root directory, run apps that you couldn't run before, and other features that you normally would have. It's a hand thing to do.
Rooting shouldn't brick your phone.

Yes after rooting you can download from the market adfree that will remove most ads. The what I like to use is titanium backup to remove or freeze the bloatware. By freezing it is removes it from the app drawer. But is still on the phone encase you need it later say for warrenty. But now with the Odin files for our phones you can delete the bloat and do a resort in you must warrenty it.

So I assumed you were typing it different every time. Then I realized you were probably using the xda app since it said "Sent from my .. ..." haha
I started adding the - so people would know it was my sig. Now the new version of it.

Like the sig. I'm gonna do that with mine.
Adfree is awesome,
And another really good way to get rid of bloat is to use the pick'n'pack roms. All the instructions are on the post in the android dev section.
And rooting/ flashing shouldn't be frowned upon by a lot of people at us cell / samsung- a lot of those are people that have a passion for phones and do the same thing

Because it is stock android, which means no BS and for most people that is enough.
@elias, the only option you have if you want ICS and don't want to root is to wait for the official OTA which should be rolling out soon. Once you have ICS from the OTA you won't be able to roll back to GB without rooting (someone correct me if I'm wrong on this one)

I think that has very little to do with being a power user. NeXus phones have always been developer based phones made to mod, root, and hack. People that buy these phones, for the most part, buy them because of that and not because they want a vanilla android experience. Of course there are roms out that can get you close to that but I would venture to guess that if you took a pole of neXus users 99% of them want a custom experience, not a vanilla one. So for me to ask why someone would buy a Nexus and not root it is probably a question that a lot of people would be interested in. And nice side ways attempt at a jab with the comment about people spending to much time here. People that are here enjoy their time here. Enjoy learning. Enjoy modding, rooting, hacking. But I don't expect some one with a stock development phone to understand that. You have your hobbies we have ours.

That is definitely why some people choose a Nexus devices, but there is also a large amount of people who choose them for "quick" updates and a stock experience. It is the only way to achieve those things. Some people probably also choose the Nexus S because it is a really nice, smaller handset with an awesome screen.
Don't forget, some people got them because best buy was giving them away for free.
Not me, although I did get mine for free, I got mine for "fastboot OEM unlock".

As others have said, this was the wrong section for this, but I will not harp on that.
I also want to apologize for a very poor showing from our community. Sometimes this forum is an embarrassment, especially in juxtaposition to other Linux communities. There are a good deal of very arrogant people here, who just cant seem to help jumping all over the new guy. Im surprised no one called you a noob.
With all of that said, I want to agree with your posting above. Speaking as a system admin for a mid-sized company, your reasoning for owning this phone is the exact reason why it has been handed out to every employee here.
Now on to your question. Because of the age of our phone, the development community behind it is very mature. Not the users, but the tools. It is very hard to brick your phone, in fact you might say you would have to go out of your way to truly brick the device. You might get a soft brick, but even that is hard to do and is still easily fixed via ODIN.
As others have said, there are very easy to follow instructions on unlocking and rooting this device. These are not really hacks, as this phone was meant to have these things done to it. I do understand the hesitation, though after the first time you go though doing it, you will wonder what you were so scared of in the first place. You can always give this thread a try, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1250583&highlight=one+click+root
to make things easy on yourself. After you get it rooted, familiarize yourself with making a NAND backup in the custom recovery first thing. This is basically an image backup of your device allowing you to jump back to safety should you do something wrong during a custom rom install.
Here is the way I look at it. If you have your phone rooted with a custom rom and it breaks and you need to return it for some reason, then ODIN will flash you back to stock and you'll have no worries about returning it to Sprint. If you some how destroy your phone to the point where not even ODIN will have access to fix it(AKA your phone goes swimming), then Sprint will not have access to the device either and will have no clue you rooted it. What some of these knuckleheads are poorly trying to get across to you, is that the phone you own, wants to be rooted.
Good luck and welcome to the community.

interesting find.

I don't know if he is or not. Most people on Android Central aren't the brightest. It might be legit. but i find it highly odd because t-mobile or HTC (IIRC) have yet to confirm it for our phones.
Football would have sent it our way by now, I think.
It was probably the same thing my brother tripped on on his mt4g. The my account app updated and was now compatible with ics, so a message popped up on the screen. At a glance he thought he was getting ics update on his mt4g. So he went nuts for a sec, but then realized it was just for the app.
Definitely misinterpreted the message. Sounds like his wife is not informed.

It was most likely the most recent update and she just now got it. For how long it took us to get gingerbread and how old the phone now is. I highly highly doubt T-Mobile will put ics on it.

What error is it giving you in CWM? What version of CWM? In reference to Odin - do you have the drivers installed, usb debugging checked, etc.? Have you tried different usb cords/ports/computers?
I'm not at my phone right now but the cwm error was somethin bout a file missing from /data... I literally just rooted and flashed tweaked to the refurbed one they sent me and all is well, the old one won't be detected in any way by my computer tho n it's been doing funny **** every since I left eclipse.. I know it's not the computer or hardware, but any attempt to flash on cwm OR Odin results in failure.. should I even worry since it looks like stock anyway? Lol idk if they really check at Verizon..

While I would agree is there proof of it happening irl? I personally would raise hell if they did to me. I bought the charge at full price because of the possibility of loosing unlimited. It went from flagship phone to abandoned before my contract was done. Luckily I had an upgrade to burn and got a S3 but even then they pulled the locked bootloader ****. I know why, to keep people buying devices but they really like to treat their customers like ****

Have to return A2 for replacement, question about bootstrap

So, I bricked my last A2 and had it replaced and the one they gave me is horrific (bunch of issues...). Anyway, I know I have to unroot, they will most certainly detect that. However, What about bootstrap? Do you think they will notice that when they bring it to the back to do their "troubleshooting"? Because I was just planning on unrooting and then uninstalling bootstrap app (incase they know what that is, i know that that wont remove they bootstrap). So, what are your opinions on that?

Not sure if I'm completely off topic but don't want to start a new thread either: so does AT&T/Motorola salvage the bricked phones returned/exchanged under warranty? I understand if you microwave it, it's gone for good, but otherwise do they have a way to salvage a phone with hosed bootloader or hard bricking? Will it require special hardware setup to recover these phones? I am sure bricking would be a common phenomena in Moto's lab ...

But I didn't brick this one, it was a bad replacement, and my last one, yeah FXZ confused me so my ignorance overtook my ability to fix it, because I couldnt find the files on the forums (links were down) and flashed wrong ones (live and learn?). But yes, being a sophmore in high school I probably shouldn't being doing this stuff as I don't have any money lol.

Yes, unless the EMMC is corrupted beyond redemption they have special flashing tools to restore phones to a usable condition. Just think about when the phone is made; it is a blank slate. They have to have a way to flash it initially. They can use a similar method to resurrect it if it is not damaged beyond repair.

Hmmm ... that's exactly is my point; if it is all software, why doesn't it leak like RSDlite? Then users could recover these bricked phones themselves and no need of these warranty calls. It must be some special hardware (to be connected to JTAG?) which even our service centers do not have available. Then we could take our out of warranty phones to them and get it restored for a small fee. Now if I take a bricked phone to them, they change the motherboard and charge ~30% of the phone value.

That is because there is an efuse that was blown as part of this process, and you can't unblow a fuse/efuse. That is why you are getting new boards. I was at one the AT&T service centers last week and we looked at one of the bricks, and it did throw 2 efuses that I could find. We could connect them to JTAG with the correct connetions, but we could NOT see the phone from the JTAG device/software.

Is it not an inefficient (or dangerous (or suicidal)) design that if you overwrite the bootloader (even by an older version) then a efuse blows somewhere and the motherboard becomes useless. You may refuse to boot if the bootloader isn't trusted but killing the phone in the process sounds too bad to me. Would this happen with phones with unlocked bootloader too?

No, this is a Motorola ONLY thing, as inefficient as it might be. There is no need for anything like is in a unlocked bootloader phone. This happens because these phones are just like iphones in that Motorola does NOT want us "playing" with them, or doing any kind of dev work on them, Moto phones have a HUGE history of being non developer friendly. That is also why certain devs like me find them a challenge and want to "breakthrough" all that.

Well, except their managers we all see how it backfired. It doesn't interfere with people who wants to stay stock, and if it gets bricked doing some dev, they get a warranty call (and maybe they have to swap in 90% cases). Doesn't help anyone.
However I had a Milestone before (why did I buy another Moto afterwards questions my sanity) but even if it had a locked bootloader (and after stock 2.1 no update was given), devs could port froyo and finally CM7 and CM9. I am hoping in spite of the lock, we'll be able to port CM9/10, keeping the kernel same. I am hopeful as LG Thrill 4G, Motorola Droid 3 has CM9 already.
Well I'm offtopic already so don't bother replying
