Hey all,
I regularly install and uninstall new apps, causing new dex files to be generated for apps I may have already uninstalled. I am running low on phone memory (Samsung Galaxy Ace), and the dalvik cache is taking up a lot of space.
My question is, can I delete my Dalvik cache without using a new ROM? And will this free some space, or will everything be generated again?
Thanks.

If you're running titanium backup, it can go through and clean up your dalvik for you. Additionally, if you're using CWM it's easy to go in and clean your dalvik without any complications.
Do it.

Help...no matter which rom i try i cant get any downloads to work...sorry, let me clarify...my market downloads work fine but any downloads form the web fail.
Any thoughts on what to change to fix this? it wasnt always this way...i dont know whats changed that crosses roms.
Solved:
It appears two be a two part issue, some of it is the Download Manager and at least part of the issue was with the Calibre App i was trying to DL from. Specifically, I was accessing the Calibre net share component. When a password is set on the share the gtab download manager is unable to correctly request downloads. I removed the uid/pwd and downloads work again. With the uid/pwd in place logs show an http 401 error.
Now to determine why...
In recovery are you wiping everything? Cause that was my issue at first and I was crossing roms lol

When you say you wiped cache and stuff, did you wipe user data as well? If so, then that would explain why Titanium can't see your previous backup (It stores it in internal storage by default).
If that is the case, and you have wiped the data partition, your best bet would be to start over and reload your ROM from scratch.

As long as Darkeyce didn't perform a NVIDIA flash or repartition the drive, the backup data should still be there. I've loaded many custom roms by wiping cache and data (factory reset), and all I had to do was reinstall Titanium Backup and restore my apps.
I had the same problem yesterday on my Vegan GTab. GMail wouldn't work either, and my Nook app wouldn't sync with my online account. I didn't try any fix but after shutting down the device last night, I fired it up this morning and everything was working fine.

Im using LeeDroid 3.3.1 on my Inspire 4G right now and I see there is an update to 3.3.3
I installed the first rom using Rom Manager a couple months back.
This is going to be my first time doing an update to a Rom.
Are there any special tips?
Will it wipe my data and apps?
Is it better to install it with Rom Manager or some other way?
Thanks for any advise.
After it downloads the update you'll get a pop-up with three check boxes:
Back-up existing ROM
Wipe Data&Cache
Wipe Dalvik
Wiping just dalvik and backing up is what i usually do with updates, it keeps all of your data. Wiping Data&Cache is for doing a clean install without data being saved.
Backup & wipe Dalvik.
Got it..
I'll give it a shot.
update wont wipe ur data unless u wipe manually. some update do require a data wipe if there's change related to system component, so if the update fails, u may need a wipe.

Well. Glad I did the backup.
That didn't go so well.
I was missing quite a few apps, even rom manager was missing.
I'll try again.
Does one need to wipe all their data if they were to flash a custom ROM for the first time on their phone? Can just wiping the dalvik cache be enough?
Your input will be much appreciated

Always safer to wipe it all. That keeps ghost errors from popping up.
Always wipe all m8 cause u can experience lot of problems like me when I flash new kernel and didn't do wipe and I have problems with battery measure after wipe it was good.
Its always a cleaner and faster Tom to wipe all and it gives u a chance to test the rom alone and report back on bugs if any.

You can use Titanium backup or something similar to backup the apps & data. That way setting it back up after wiping isn't as difficult/time consuming.
Just don't restore system data & I personally like restoring each app individually.
As far as it concerns backup apps : I prefer backing up the preferences of the most complex apps from inside the app on sd card instead of using titanium or others. In my case, this is only necessary for about 5 apps. The rest has no special or complex individual preferences. The reason : restoring apps completely via titanium or others may cause problems. Recently I had a bug after restoring go launcher with "my backup root". Only a fresh installation helped.
For reinstalling the apps themselves I find it pretty easy to go to my apps library in the market on the PC and reinstall them using the service that sends them directly to the phone.
All in all I deem it cleaner not to restore apps!

Thanks everybody for the good advice
So ive been on octane 3 for a while nd its starting to feel sluggish any tune up I can do without having to reflash
Clearing your cache partition and dalvik cache in CWM - along with removing unused apps is probably your only option.
Can u tell me exactly what im deleting I dont want to delete important data
just apps that youve installed that you dont use, games etc.

You need to reboot into CWM and clear cache partition, then go into advanced and clear dalvik cache, reboot phone and let sit 10 minutes to rebuild caches.
Flashing ftf is a must after unlocking, but is there a way to preserve data ? I mean my phone will not get wipe

Try not to wipe cache and user data when flashing through Flashtool.
If you can't boot to system without wiping userdata, the best way is backup via Titanium Backup before unlocking bootloader.
If I'm not wrong, Internal SD wouldn't get wiped, only /data partition. But it's better to take backup of your Internal SD first.

I don't get what you mean about the "data" :|
Is it Contact, SMS, etc? Backup using My Backup/ My Backup Pro: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rerware.android.MyBackup
App & Game? Backup using Titanium Backup

Ahh I see..
For system app backup, you need to restore it manually one by one, don't use batch action.
FC is normal for restoring system app, but after reboot, FC is gone.
If you want to move updated app from /data to /system partition.
You can use Batch action "Integrate update of system apps into ROM"
Again, it's normal if FC happen, just reboot your phone after finished integrating the update.
