Poor Signal Strength on ICS/Jelly Bean Roms? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hoping someone can help me out here. For years, I have been able to maintain good signal strength with pretty much any Gingerbread based phone/ROM.
After purchasing my Moto Razr, updating it to ICS for my wife and purchasing the SGS3 for myself with ICS as well, we can barely maintain 1 bar of signal strength anymore. I have been into the VZ store several times, even had BOTH phones replaced, but still have the same problem.
Remembering how much success I with my former HTC Evo and the various ROMs developed for it, I turned to XDA to begin the same process with my SGS3. I rooted it and unlocked the bootloader using the methods prescribed in this forum. However, no matter what ROM or modem I flash, I still have the same problem.
I verified with VZ that the towers in my area are working correctly and even checked with my neighbor to see if he was having the same problems (he's a transplant from NY). He also has the SGS3 with the same problems. BUT, his wife has a Moto Razr that is running Gingerbread and consistenly maintains 3-4 bars of service. She REFUSES to update her phone to ICS because of the problems her husband has had. SO I know this issue is not limited to just me and my phone.
My question to everyone is, WHY is the signal strength so crappy on ICS based phones/ROMs unless you are in a major city? I live 6 miles from the nearest VZ tower and never had these problems until now.
Here are my current specs:
Samsung Galaxy S3
ROM - BeansTown106 Custom Stock Build 9
Kernal version - 3.0.41 - leankernal-0.2.2+
Baseband version - I535VRLG1
If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. Thanks.
One side note, BeansTown ROM has given me battery life that lasts ALL DAY LONG! If I can just get the signal issue fixed, it'll be PERFECT!

Development is for releases only.
Not trying to be a jerk, just filling you in.

Nothing is wrong with signal. Ics reads signal different than gb did. Bars aren't everything.

I actually have no signal problems. Im getting 4 bars of 4g 90% of the time. With my sgs3 and my galaxy nexus. Could be your phones or area

If that applied to just where I lived, I might be able to accept it. However, since I have replaced my phone twice already and still have the same issues in major cities like Raleigh, NC....I'm not willing to accept it.

No offense taken. I'm just desperate to use my phone that I love and turned to those that might be able to help.
There is an issue, I'm not the only one with it, and one day, the squeaky wheel will get the grease......just saying.

It's got to be your area, man.
Your house -- does it have thick walls? Your office? Work around a lot of computers? My old office had several death spots.
The reason I think it's your phone? I've had both phones with impeccable signal strength. Tell Verizon you want a new one sent out.

I guess I should clarify. Lol. Phone or area

Definitely can be about walls or area. I'm on the 17th floor of my building and my signal is bouncing so far.
Synergized GS3

Yea, I wish it was the walls. I'm on my second unit now. No change.
Managed to get a cell site rep from VZ come out to my area and test.....all is good (according to him). Of course he was not carrying an ICS based phone....ugh.
Just got wifey another Razr, running GB. She has 4 bars consistently through out the house.
Again, I maintain it is some difference with ICS vs. GB radios.......I dropped 3 calls just today.
Sigh......

Right now as im typing this, i have full signal @ -69db. So no it has nothing to do with the rom being ICS or JB

This and this. When comparing signal strength, the reported db is going to give you a much more accurate reading than the bars listed on your phone.

I'm definitely noticing a difference as well. Just have to be patient and wait for them to perfect the antenna...

THANK YOU! I know I'm not the only one having this issue. :good:

Ics reports signal strength differently than gingerbread. Use the dbm or ASU. Also, the network authentication Verizon uses for 4G is different than for 3G. This causes some data problems when switching from 3g to 4g.

A link for those who still contend that there is nothing wrong with the 4.04 OS and it's inconsistent radio and data issues:good:.....

Have I been throttled?

My data download has sucked since last Thursday/Friday. It takes 5+ minutes to download an app from the market(some <1mb) and I get "Download Paused" 5-10x per market download. Also, my speed test results are strange. I checked my data usage on Friday and I was only at 4600mb, yet my download was still horrible.

Average speeds in the past:
My billing cycle ends today. I guess I will find out tomorrow if my data resumes. I have been over 5gb a few times in the past, but never had an issue. Maybe I am not being throttled, I have tried all the fixes I have found for the Market issue. I formatted my memory card, delete .android_secure, have tried 3 different ROMs, same issue. If anybody has any suggestions, I would love to get out of the sub-dialup speed range!
No they are having network issues again. LTE for me is slower than yours lol.. If they throttled you to 5kps, they would be on the receiving end of a class action.
It still says I have 3g, I would only assume that 1x is faster than this. My buddy has a Thunderbolt and his works fine, but he is about 20 miles from me so he may be on a different tower?
Try rebooting your phone. Could always be something simple. Its possible that you are on a different tower thats having an issue. My 3G is great right now, but my LTE is slower than dialup. Think its their end not yours or your account.
Have you by any chance flashed the latest radio? I noticed that once I flashed the latest radio leak, my upload and download speeds dropped significantly. I flashed back to the old (stock) radio and my speeds have gone back to normal.
Reading through some threads, there seems to be others that have had the same issue, while others have had success with the leaked radio.

What's the status? Been having this issue ever since the network went down about 10 days ago. 3g hella slow.
I am still having issues. I took it into my Verizon store today which was a waste. The Vzw guy just called their tech support and he said that he did some stuff "behind the scenes" and that the new radio update should fix the issue.
I installed the radio update in the Thunderbolt Radio thread and I am still having issues. This is rediculous Verizon! It has been over a week! Makes my phone not worth using anything that uses data

[Q] OTA 2.3.4 update(Nexus S 4g) Battery, and Signal Strength

Hey everyone, I am enjoying the nexus s 4g(traded in my Evo 4g) but I have noticed some issues started to pop up after the OTA update to 2.3.4.(Build GRJ22). Also I am not rooted yet(for fear i will not be able to receive the next update that may resolve the issue's listed below).
Note I have updated my Profile, and PRL(Next to flashing to another ROM to mitigate the issue's).
1) Battery Charging, after the update the battery will not charge past ~95 percent.
2) Battery Life when idle, before the update battery life was outstanding with moderate usage. Now the device's battery life drops to ~85 percent after being unplugged for 15-20 mins.
3)Signal Reception, yet again my phone will constantly switch between 1x, and 3g even though my SNR, and DB never hits above ~65DB-~70DB.
4)Data Rate/Bandwidth, I was pulling 3-4 megs down/ 1.5 - 2.0 megs up(I live in the Virginia Beach Area) over 3g, Now I get "**** for speeds"(.3 megs down/.25 megs up. Maybe it is reference to the issue listed above(AOSP ROMS in my opinion provide a more accurate display of mobile network connectivity).
To end it I hope I am not alone with these issues?
Maybe if possible someone has a solution?
The battery thing is a means to keep the battery in better shape its not a bug.

You aren't alone, all of the issues you listed are being looked at by Sprint and Google right now, although like the above poster said, the battery thing is intentional. Hopefuly they figure out what is wrong soon =/
In the meantime, using wifi when possible should alleviate a lot of those issues, mainly battery life on standby.
Many of my battery and network connection issues got mutch better when I turned the wifi to never sleep.

The data issues you are having are due to 2.3.4 and they are known. google/samsung are supposedly working on it. But I doubt we will see a fix anytime soon if Samsung is fixing it!
Woa, woa, woa. Wait a second, are you saying that going back to 2.3.3 or whatever the previous version was will alleviate all the signal/radio/data problems? !?!!?
If so, will downgrading stop me from being able to upgrade in the future?

nope. depending on the version you are going back to you'll mostlikely get an insta notification that 2.3.4 is available for your device, you just got to ignore it until they either fix 2.3.4 or release 2.3.5.
2.3.4 is already out. If they release a new fix it will be 2.3.5.
And what the post above mine says about the updates.
I have also seen tat 2.3.3 also has some issues with 3g. But the post I read up could have been all lies

OP:
When you "root" the NS4G, you're just unlocking the Bootloader, then installing SU/recovery....I do believe you can still receive OTA updates. The only time you can't is when you're running a custom ROM.

That's why you make a backup of untouched stock ROM.
Hey man, I returned the phone yesterday, and then bought a replacement(same model, but in order to avoid sprint's one exchange limit) With regards to the battery issue, it most likely is hardware related because the new phone running 2.3.4.(Build GRJ22), charges fully and does not have the so called "protect your battery feature". Also while i was at the Sprint Store, I compared the signal strength of my original Nexus S to an HTC Evo, HTC Evo Shift, and another Nexus S 4g. Oddly enough even in the store(which has signal booster's all over the place. All of the phones where around -76db. I am starting to think it is either a hardware issue or a ****ty baseband version. Most likely hardware. Kind of reminds me of the Samsung Captivate i had with AT&T and the ever so wonderful bug with Odin(Orange/Blue flashing screen of death that turned my investment into a paperweight. Also after running the *#*#4636#*#*, and displaying the Preferred Network Settings, I noticed on all 3 phones tested, all devices would switch from WCDMA, to Uknown, to the best of my understanding the default should be CDMA_Auto PRL. Very Strange, very strange indead......... Samsung needs to invest into quality control, before lawsuits start.
Damn! I am on wifi and charging the phone. I just woke up and picked up the phone and started using it. I've experienced that using the phone after an overnight charge, but not removing it from the charger, will make my battery go up to 98%. I just saw it hit 99 and was like I need to get a screen shot of this. By the time I downloaded and installed something it dropped back down to 98. I've never seen this phone hit 99 before today. If it does it again I am prepared to archive it.

Will you return G2X if update doesn't fix reboot?

I sure as hell will. Wondering who here is ready to return if their phone reboots after update. T mobile will be so swamped if it doesn't fix it, and mine recently has started rebooting randomly, not too often. Just wondering if everyone here will return, if so, t mobile will have quite the ride with this one unless they do a recall.

My sentiments exactly.
I don't think LG is going to let it happened. It's something in the software that is conflicting with the hardware. I'm on customs ROM (CM7) and have not seen it rebooted once.
I will sell the phone if I will see new 2.3 gonna be slow than 2.2
(Im ready to buy Samsung Galaxy S II)
If the update or a battery swap doesn't fix my reboots,i would like to return it but I'm already past my 30 days.

I would make them exchange it. How can they not if you tell them it interrupts calls with a reboot. Also someone else said in the topic about the o2x gingerbread delay that the g2x was pulled and he's getting a sensation. Not sure if that's true or not.

That I don't know. Most likely...
When you ask, "will you return it?" you realize that T-Mobile will not take it back for a refund outside the 14 or 30 day "buyers remorse" periods.
If you are outside that period, returning it for a refund or exchange for another phone of a different model is not an option.
And since the phone has not been available for nearly 30 days now, I dont see how ANYONE could still be within their buyers remorse period.
I was on the phone with an executive from T-Mobile today (not a customer service specialist, retention specialist or tech specialist... a real executive) and there is nothing that ANYONE of lower position at T-Mobile can do.
And as an FYI, the issue is happening with pre-rooted and un-modded phones AND rooted and custom rom phones. I have one of each sitting on my desk right now and both of them have the same issues.
If I jump off this ship the I won't get to see this phone mature.
It is such an awesome device and at least with me the reboots are not bad at all. Just like any other phone I had, nothing new nothing major.
This is going to be an awesome phone ones it matures.

There's always the Sensation. I played with one at my Wal-Mart today and it is very light and small. I was shocked, tbh. I have very small hands, for a guy and it is quite comfortable. The only thing holding me back from pulling the trigger is that new return policy and the chance of a Nexus Two? Three? coming this Christmas.

I will not jump to the Sensation unless they build a ROM that is without Sense. Sense is fun to play with but it's horrendous as a daily driver.
The Slide 4g or whatever does have me intrigued though. I just loves me some keyboard.
There is no way in hell I am getting another one of these. No way. They can't tell me when the update is coming and each phone has these different crazy personalities!
Mine did two completely new and screwy things today. Completely different than the wifi issues and shutting off type reboots, and screen bleed that this forth phone has been doing already.
First, today when I was at the local Walmart trying to see a Sensation, I took my phone out of my pocket and it was stuck in this loop. The notification screen looked like it was pulled half way down. It was spinning around between landscape and portrait, landscape and portrait over and over about once a second. Kind of looked like a slow motion propeller just goin' round and round. Landscape, portrait, landscape, portrait. Bizzarre. Had to pull the battery.... nothing else would work.
Then tonight, my battery was in the red zone. So I change batteries. I have to enter my code on my sim card before I can use my phone. It took forever to get to that sim screen, then I could not input anything. Finally held down the power off button, the power off screen shows but I cannot input hereeither..,,,,battery pull. Arggghhh!
Then I turn it on, and it takes forever....I mean two full minutes, then shows an error message.....
" Sorry!
The application com.lge omadmclient (process com. lge omadmclient) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again"
With a "Force close" button
When I pushed the force close, it showed another error screen
"Sorry
The application Launcher pro (process android.process. a core) has stopped unecpectedly. Please try again."
This one had two choices.."Force close" and "Make report"
When I pushed FC, it went right to the former error screen.
Could not get out of this loop. Until I did a battery pull. Power off did not work.
This happened three times. Three times. Finally did an on/volume reset. Arggghhh!
More Weirdness.....
No....I don't want another. Thanks.

+1 I love sense for the eyes but sense bogs down the phone too much. I want my phone to be snappy as possible but it does look like a nice device.. Although I dont think it makes sense to jump ship for it. I think by late fall(which is only a few months a way ) something better will be out and I'll upgrade then The mytouch 4g slide does look interesting as well(I had the mt4g and loved it) Wonder how thick it will be. I really dont have any reboot issues with my g2x. I do have some screen bleed but I'm going to try to fix that I actually have 2 g2x's that's why I dont mind trying to open one up just to fix the screen bleed. The other got sent back to "LG" (really Steller Wireless) for major major screen bleed/screen separation. I hope that one comes back perfect but I'm not holding my breath. But I want to try to fix the one with minimal screen bleed myself
Oh I am going to stick this out to the buyer end... It is a beast... It had me at hello...

Walking home and I see the g ride_ sorry, I come from the easy e generation. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Got the same on mine after 3 days old, replaced sim did not help.
VZW said defective device sending out a new one so we will see.
Damnit!!! I was just coming on here to make a thread about this and there already is one! This started for me about 3 days ago, before then i got the phone when verizon released it and been fine since.
What happens for me is when trying to go to visual voicemail it asks for pin, i type it in, then my signal bars go to zero, sim card icon on notification bar, then says preparing sim, then i get a couple bars of service and visual voicemail connects.
I noticed this too just sending text or mms messages! I receive them ok it seems (still need to test myself) but when i send them sometimes i get the same issue! Says no service, sim card icon shows, says preparing sim card, then i get bars and text goes through.
I tried taking my sim card out of the tray, wipe it down, place it back in securely, made zero difference! I was hoping the sim card just went bad and need a replacement. Hope that helps but with people saying you need a replacement on here, that would suck! Love how i have my device setup and still in mint condition. Not looking for a refurb, WTF?!?
I'm using Viper 1.5 rom if that makes a difference and installed the stock messaging zip put together in this forum so we have visual voicemail working with Viper rom.
I also did the update for firmware and radio that was compiled in a zip on here as well. It only updated the radio and firmware, nothing else. Did this though when it first came out on here and worked fine so not sure how this if could be related? Just thought i'd throw it out there to maybe pin point this issue???
Have any of you tried sending a group mms message? Doing this makes it the worst for me! If i send a group mms, it will take away all signal bars, then sim card icon pops up on notification bar, then goes away and on the bottom a small bubble comes up saying preparing sim card, then i get signal bars, then this cycle repeats itself several times before the group mms actually gets sent out!
This happens when i send mms, contact vcard, group mms, and when connecting to visual voicemail. This just started a couple of days ago with no changes on my end. I even did a full factory reset, no change.
I actually received a group mms today and it happened. I'm stock, rooted, s-off, running xposed and I got the phone on the release date, mine too was fine until a few days ago. Wtf is happening?

Same here! I hardly send mms or groups message. First time I sent out a group message was a few days ago and talking with the family via group text message whenever I send us when it happened! Then I tried sending mms and it happened. Then I tried accessing VVM and it happened. Now it won't stop. Doesn't happen all the time don't get me wrong but at least every other time I send mms or VVM it happens. Almost 100% of the time I send group mms it happens.
Connection settings correct?

I tried changing my settings as the MMS port was blank originally. I changed it to 80 as shown from the web, reboot, made zero difference! I'm really hoping i just need a new sim card and NOT a new device. Damn

I haven't touched mine. I wonder if it has something to do with the ota? I looked around on the net and it's happening to enough people to start a petition! Plus there's a couple people saying it's the tray.... Either way it's not just us.

Doesn't seem many on this site are complaining yet, where do you see online? I doubt it's the tray to be honest. My last device was the HTC One X+ and that device it was proven the tray was bad. Had to scotch tape the sim card down on the tray.
This is why i'm thinking it's a network issue or settings issue:
1. If sim card is bad how can we make and receive calls? How can we send and receive regular text messages fine?
2. This ONLY happens when sending group mms, mms, or accessing VVM. At least for me these are the only 3 features that set this off. After testing for awhile it seems the larger the mms file is being sent the more likely this happens.
3. This happens randomly. I can send a picture to my work cell just fine. I then try 10 seconds later to send it again and get this issue. Why did it send the first time just fine and the second time get issues???
I tried these settings made no difference. http://www.4gtricks.com/2013/03/verizon-4g-apn-settings.html
I doubt it's a physical sim card issue but going to try today after work and get a new sim and see. I don't think it's the sim because again sim card works to make calls, texts, mail, etc. Not sure why a physical sim card would not work specifically only when trying to send mms, group mms, use VVM?
I don't have OTA and getting this issue. I only did the no boot firmware zip flash on here so only my firmware and radio have been updated. I'm using Viper 1.5 rom, full root, s-off, twrp, etc. Started about 2 days ago, no other changes have been made on my end. This just happened out of no where and won't stop.

Has anyone tried these settings? http://www.4gtricks.com/2013/03/verizon-4g-apn-settings.html
I have the same issue when using hangouts for SMS. Whenever a mms comes in or sent out, does what u guys have mentioned. If I use stock messaging it works fine. I have tried in insert coin and skyfall, same thing. Also tried on fresh I stall with nothing installed. I pray its not phone. And only started happening over last 3 days or so

This is freaking weird, seems everyone posting about this on XDA it started about 3 days ago! Did verizon maybe do a system update or something that could cause it? Looks like we're not the only ones going crazy over this...
http://forums.androidcentral.com/htc-one-m8/374584-verizon-htc-one-m8-sim-card-error.html
Only other thing i can find on the net besides what's posted here about the issue. Seems the theory a new sim card, even a device replacement does nothing to fix the problem. WTF?!? My M8 have a life span of a couple months before it goes bunk with issues?!?
I'm out of solutions. I've tried factory reset, ive tried restoring old twrp backups from good working roms, nothing helps or works! I'm thinking maybe there's a hard code that might carry over to my twrp backup restore since it happens on those backup restores too? If that is not possible well then, this device just turned into an unreliable POS over night, literally!
My business partner has the exact M8 but stocked. Mine is rooted and running Viper 1.50. We both have the same "Preparing Sim Card" message throughout the day. It started a few days ago too and I thought nothing of it. I'm leaning towards network issues and not hardware or custom rom.

Yes today! They said I'm the first with this issue with this device. Yeah ok. Usual crap from them, try a new SIM card if that doesn't work then u get a replacement. Awesome, thanks for fixing nothing as usual!

That sucks man. Good luck & hope you get your issue resolved.
I'm a field tech for Verizon in the southern California market and we're currently rolling out the AWS upgrade... I'm wondering if it's a handover issue or possibly a compression issue with mms but mine does it at random, I don't have to send or receive an mms for it to happen, the scripts for the new sites we upgraded might have a bug. I'll talk to an engineer on Monday and see if it's isolated to our phones or if everyone is experiencing this. Are you guys in southern California?

only started happening to me 2 or 3 days ago? have had the phone since released and haven't had any issues up until that point.
orange county area as well
Does anyone know what these settings do? Default on Viper Rom is Global. I changed to CDMA/LTE and reboot. Reception was just as good but didn't notice any difference with this mms issue. Didn't know if this setting did much or what it does?

Note 3 KitKat update has completely broken notifications.

Obviously Samsung weren't happy with their efforts to launch this device with a broken email app. They've gone one step further and broken all push notification support in 4.4.
No longer do I receive email notifications, app notifications, or pretty much anything else.
I have to unlock the phone before I'm told that I had an important meeting an hour ago which had a reminder set 30 mind before. Nor will I receive those stupidly funny pictures of cats with bread crusts on their heads on time.
But it's OK, because calls and texts still work just fine. Who needs important emails as long as you have that text telling you to pick up milk the second it comes through.
There must be laws somewhere to protect us against this stuff. Samsung are shocking.
I would suggest doing a factory reset. I have none of these issues. I have multiple email accounts and calendar reminders that never fail to go off unless the battery is dead. Both the first 4.4.2 and the current build (which is much cleaner in general performance btw).

I've done 5 factory resets in the last 2 weeks.
Notifications SOMETIMES work for the first 2 days, before they stop altogether.
Doesn't matter if I have a clean start with no apps installed, having all the bloatware disabled, etc. It always breaks.
I've tried just using the normal battery cover as opposed to the Samsung Flip cover, makes no difference at all.
I've also noticed that Cell Standby is top of battery usage regardless of what I do. Tested different batteries, sim cards, forcing 2G/3G instead of LTE, etc, also with no luck. The battery reporting is also way off too. 100% to 50% drains stupidly slow, then after 50% it craters to 0% within hours. Again, doesnt matter which battery I use (all official batteries btw). Wiped everything via recovery, nothing works.
Am I just one of the victims of 4.4.2? Because I'm starting to think the phone itself is broken.
Also worth mentioning that its only a few weeks old, so 4.3 hasnt been tested, and now obviously I can't go back due to the bootloader update.
My note 2 runs beautifully on both 4.3 and 4.4
I would take your reset one step further and flash the current firmware via Odin. The factory flash you have might be corrupt. Not likely but it wouldn't be the first time I've seen it.

Whatever your situation is it's your situation. I've been on 4.4 since a leak was released in January and haven't had any of the issues you're describing. The Gear is dependent on device notifications for its feed so its forum would be lit up like a Christmas tree if what you're describing were common. I can't imagine it's h/w related because there's no specific component that would touch the things affecting you. From what you said, I'm assuming your device is receiving whatever's supposed to trigger the notification but you're not being alerted when it arrives/occurs. That sounds like an app conflict or problem in settings.

Strangely enough, notifications work fine when paired with the Galaxy Gear I got free with it. I just rarely use it due to the nature of my workplace.
I probably should have added, the notifications only come through a few seconds after the phone is unlocked. You can visibly see the phone begin to access the network via the icon, and once it downloads, notifications pop.
And worth mentioning that this happens regardless of wifi access point, and on both 2G/3G and on LTE.

I'll give that a go thanks.
I know you say it's unlikely, but I've tried for hours to find people that have the same issues as me, with no luck. Here's hoping it's just one of those rare cases.

Mine doesn't do this. In fact mine is the opposite, it checks my email more often than what I set it to, kind of annoying.

Thanks but I'm running the international version.
Decided to bite the bullet and use the latest NE3/NE4 update from Asia, as a few people have reported it to be fine for the n9005 model it was intended for. I can always flash back later.
Will update in due course if anything helps my situation.
I had the same problem with WhatsApp notification
And I figured out that was happening because I hibernated google play store app
Just a quick message to say that the NE3 build seems to have fixed my cell standby issue, but ofcourse this is more than likely down to the full odin flash.
Hopefully it stays that way. Will test notifications during my work day tomorrow.
Yet another thing I forgot to add. Notifications have always worked properly when there is music playing to an external device. I assume this is down to the fact that the phone is always awake, and not in deep sleep like it normally is.
Android system and Android OS are both firmly back at the top of my battery usage as per the 4.4.2 norm. Strangely though I can't get the screen usage up at all.
weird. I have had 0 problems with NE3. Are you sure that you didn't greenify \ deactivate \appops stuff you shouldn't ?
i would love to have cell standby up on top as opposed to Android OS \ Android system though i did see a big leap in standby battery life comming to NE3 from ND3 and they were still on top.

NE3 seems to be significantly better than the ND6 build I was originally on. I can't judge battery life as ND6 was completely broken where tracking battery health, charge, etc was concerned. But I will say that it seems much more accurate.
So far notifications are working flawlessly while I have my flip cover installed. Hopefully it lasts.
