It has 800Mhz 1x Advanced support for Voice calls, it doesn't have 800Mhz LTE support
My current hotel (I live in SoCal, but commute to Silicon Valley every week) is in an unannounced LTE market (San Jose Metro, in city of Santa Clara) but has great LTE signal and speed. Maybe I'll do a(n unofficial) battery-life test in the next couple of days.

800Mhz LTE AND 2.5GHz LTE support; the latter to use Clearwire's upcoming LTE network.
There have been some faint signs of LTE appearing in my area. I've gotten it to connect for a minute or two and then it goes back to 3g, I managed to get a speed test and got ~10Mbps down and 7Mbps up. Still nowhere near as fast as it could be but hopefully once the network leaves its initial build out phase it'll be stable and fast.

Ha! The minimum I would be satisfied with is stable 3-4Mbps speed with wide coverage and no data caps.

Hey guys
So Im trying to get my head around all the new '4G' to decide weather or not to buy this phone or wait for a 'true 4G' phone.
To my understanding, there are three new '4G' Protocols. HSPA+, WiMax and LTE.
Each of which operate of the standard frequency spectrum.
What is the HTC Sensation compatible with? From what I've gathered
HSPA+ - Yes
WiMax - No
LTE - Unsure
This phone was just announced on Monday exclusive to Telstra (Australia), Talked to the guys there but they had no idea.
If you could point in the right direction that'd be great
Cheers guys
hspa+ only. Works very well here in the states. Very good balance of speed and battery life
It's capable of up to 14.4 Mbps down and 5.76 Mbps up. The best I've gotten so far is around 9 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up which is pretty good.
Ive had the sensation for about 6 days now and im coming from a Evo w/ WiMax which i averaged 3 down 1 up..
I get 9 down and 2 up with the sensation and everyone tells me its not true "4G".. either way im happy and can careless
Odd... I get 9 / 1 with my evo, but 7 / 1.5 with my friends sensation...

Boom... Headshot! from my L96A1
Speeds.
I've hit 13 down and 4 up in Dallas area.
If your not doing anything crazy over the web and a decent HSPA+ is available to you I wouldn't hesitate to get the current "4G" devices.
Verizon's LTE though is much more robust in my experience here in the Philly area, but you also don't have a Sensation on VZ.
Even still; with data caps (If you have them) it's gonna be a moot point. I mean I was taking down 2 gigs a month on 3G (with tether etc...).

Since no one has stated it yet: HSPA+ isn't really 4G. It's just marketed as that specifically for marketing. LTE & WiMax are actual 4G technologies.
That being said, right now they all run around the same speeds.

Check the following article: http://www.itu.int/net/pressoffice/press_releases/2010/48.aspx
Before this, neither LTE & WiMax are actual 4G. Tmo uses this market HSPA+ as 4G, AT&T is now doing the same thing by marketing HSPA+ as 4G on their phones.
LTE was never considered 4G before this marketing craze began. LTE Advanced was.
didn't know that about LTE. thanks
Hey guys!
Is there a way we can disable the 4G connection and only use 3G? Any help that you guys can as provide will be greatly appreciated!
There is no 4G in Atrix2. Is just a marketing ATT does.

4G LTE = LTE (our phone doesn't support it)
4G = 3G + extra stuff to be better... but still techically 4G as it's AT&T's 4th generation of technology
3G = 3G
But I don't think that there's a way you can disable "4G" and only use 3G... you can disable 3G/4G and only use 2G though.
ATRIX 2 supports 21mbit hspa+ that's what they call 4G. 3g is really just slower versions of hspa+ for us. Post above is correct about LTE. LTE is better than hspa+ also.

my wifes iphone 4 must suck then.
hers is a "3g" and gets about 1.25 mbps

Well it's both really .
But our phone is about as fast as you can get on AT&T's network without using LTE. The OG Atrix also was "4G" but it was only 14.x mb/sec while our A2's radio supports up to 21.x mb/sec (or something around there). The iPhone X's only support 3G.

Not too sure what you guys are meaning when you say better....
I was interested in the differences a while back and after researching around quite a bit, found that the speeds really depended on the phone's programming more so than whether it was LTE or HSPA+.

LTE has higher bandwidth, and is less populated. HSPA+ can go up to 21mbit, yes, (which is less than LTE) BUT most AT&T HSPA+ deployments are 7mbit or 14mbit.
HSPA+ users typically see ~4-5mbit or so, maybe up to 7mbit on a 14.4mbit cell, but LTE users typically can see 9-11mbit+.
The best speedtest I have ever gotten on my phone was in the 5mbit range. SLC only has 7mbit HSPA+ from what I can tell, and since AT&T is going to LTE, it appears they wont be upgrading the HSPA+ network any more.
you're lucky. Around my area all you can get is 2-3 mbs.

Thats what I usually get too, but if I am right near a cell tower I can get the ~5mbit speeds.
Yeah, "4G" is actually HSPA+, which AT&T actually was going to call 3G+. The 4G crap came around because T-Mobile marketed it that way and if AT&T stuck with 3G+ they took the risk of people thinking T-Mobile was faster and losing customers. LTE was what they planned to call 4G.

I feel as if their labeling of 4g was a bit deceiving as well but its understandable if it was meant to keep up with TMobile because of all the confusion between 4g and 4g lte.
The good news is that I don't believe our 4g is as battery-consuming as 4g lte, its probably about the same as regular 3g.
If you're wanting to limit it to 2g though there is a way to do it even though the menu is left out from our 'Settings'. Use anycut to get to network settings directly and choose GSM only.
At least T-Mobile's HSPA+ is significantly faster than "3G" - not an entirely undeserved title for them. ATT...not so much.

That's pretty good. Max I've seen is 11mbit down.
I didn't believe it at first so I reran the speedtest a couple times to make sure.
Mine has topped out around 9Mbps, sadly.
It's not throughput that's bad on a decent 3G network, a lot of time's it's the latency. Meh. Whatever. Long live LTE.
I ran just ran the speedtest.net app and I have 7.20 mbps down and 1.13 up here in Atlanta. Thats even better than basic dsl albiet cable beats it easily....
I have the Google Nexus 5 and in the Dallas, TX area I'm seeing VERY weak LTE signals. Inside buildings, connectivity is completely cut off (no bars). Outside is better, but I can literally wrap both my hands and cover my phone and it kills the signal completely.
I tried various APN changes I found on Google and XDA but nothing helps. Anyone having this problem? I swapped to AT&T prepaid in the meantime and signals are absolutely fantastic. However I have problems with T-mobile connectivity on this phone no matter where I go in the metroplex.
I'll just guess and say T-Mobile suck in your area

Very weak in Frisco area, just use 3G instead of LTE, if you don't really need the speed.
I have the same issue, LTE is bad, but then the phone all by itself jumps to 3G and I loose the signal for 5/10 seconds while it's changing.
Why is that? Is it because of the modem or because of the infrastructure?

its the Modem the modem wants you to have network that has the best signal, it doesn't care about your data speed. i have a 1 bar LTE connection in my home often times it switches to edge/2g to save battery since its got a higher signal strength

They're still tweaking the LTE
it seems as the LTE signal is coming from a sector where you picked up LTE
the other cells sites where you picked up W-CDMA and HSDPA has not been upgraded to LTE just yet
Compare your speeds with 3G and LTE often times they're similar so i just leave it on 3G for now for the better signal

AT&T has a lower end spectrum witch allows for building penetration and more propagation across land
Where as T-Mobile has 2100Mhz for LTE which is similar to WiFI frequency wise
Sprint is starting sprint 'Spark' which is 2500Mhz *Clearwire spectrum* which is horrible for indoor penetration thats why they have 800Mhz LTE
and T-Mobile has that 700Mhz lte they bought from Verizon (Perhaps we will see compatibility in nexus 6?)
Anyways if you don't go overseas alot where Data is free with T-Mobile might aswell go get AT&T but if you like Unlimited Data and T-Mobile's offering for it look into AIO-Wireless which uses AT&T's Network and provides High speed access for 2.5GB or so and throttled after that but its still unlimited data
Nice info but I don't see what good t-mobile is if I can't even enable LTE
Honestly I prefer T-Mobile but it's just not as good coverage.

i would wait for a couple months let them settle it down, else if you can call into T-Mobile and they can adjust the downtilt of the LTE panels on the cell tower which sends more of the signal downwards where as before it was horizontal, giving you a better signal or else if they're still in the testing phase and are waiting for more backhaul to improve the speeds
If you call in though dont tell them about the downtilt stuff they have no idea what is that just say you have like 1 Bar LTE and like 3 bars HSPA+, personally i like T-Mobile and i support them in everyway to keep them in business (like right now) because i love the concept of Uncarrier and that we the people should pay for the network and not the device and network After the Contract.
Think of AT&T and Verizon like this the Signal is consistent but the speed is no more faster than a clogged toilet flushing
T-Mobile may have less bars but the speed is like 20 times faster
I found these results surprising!

Thanks a bunch for all of your help & encouragement. I'm gonna stay with T-Mobile because I like the idea of supporting them for other reasons (I do the same for Netflix, even though I don't find their movie selections that compelling).
With 3G enabled things are pretty solid, although I didn't compare to AT&T LTE speeds. What would be nice is if the device could be configured to swap to LTE only for strong signals, versus having to constantly flip the preferred network manually between 3G/LTE.

wait a couple weeks the devs may be able to force LTE like how Verizon on the Galaxy s3 forces LTE no matter what even theres a strong 3G signal and a 1 bar LTE signal.
also one thing to note is H is HSPA/HSPA+
the 3G you see is Refarmed 1900Mhz PCS
http://support.t-mobile.com/community/coverage/blog/2013/12/17/network-modernization-update (T-Mobiles Attempt to remove edge/2G in certain places and convert edge to 3G/HSPA) that (850 MHz and 1900 MHz) would be really good indoors

That's far from terrible, and pretty typical for many areas. All carriers have spots where the coverage is spotty, and that's not even spotty since you still get good 3G reception. A few miles can make a big difference.

Simms, correct me if I'm wrong, but 42mbps would apply to HSPA+, not LTE, right? You're talking about theoretical max, and LTE is WAY higher than 42mbps max. LTE has a theoretical 100mbit down, 50mbps up max. And that's just your standard 20mhz, plain LTE, non-enhanced.

Do you have some documentation on that? Not saying I don't believe you (and I've never gotten 42mbps), but I'm just curious. Because from what I've seen, even the most basic 4G LTE is supposed to be capable of 100mbps theoretically (though usually they wont let it).
Thanks. Also good to see you're still around here. I remember you and m0rfic from back in the Nexus S days. I still have mine, sitting in a drawer. It's a POS now compared to current phones. But those were the days....

no, i dont have documentation, but im sure a simple google search can find the info. of course 42mbps is theory, but ive hit 38mbps before. there is one tower in manhattan(since i live in nyc) where people regularly report speeds around 70mbps, one of the newer towers/technology being tested. and ive seen speed tests from it posted on xda.
yea, those were the days. i loved my ns!
even though it would never compare to my nexus 5. it was hurricane sandy that took it from me, washed it out to sea.

i did just find this while doing a quick search.. http://www.tmonews.com/2013/12/t-mo...ot-to-be-coverage-coverage-and-more-coverage/
10+10 is the lte we are used to, where 20+20 would be the faster lte, like they said its being tested in dallas.
"If Tmo really wants to compete with the likes of AT&T and Verizon, it has to expand its LTE coverage. Now, we know it’s already in the works. T-Mobile’s 10+10 LTE network has reached almost all the major cities in the States. We heard that in the last conference call. T-Mobile is proud of its quick coverage rollout from 0 to over 205 million people in less than a year. 20+20 is starting to light up in a couple of locations (mainly Dallas, TX), making it even quicker. In those areas that have it, Tmo’s LTE is stupendously fast."

Not sure if this information has been posted...
http://www.phonenews.com/verizon-ht...te-enables-band-4-xlte-coverage-access-30047/
Verizon has begun rolling out the long awaited HTC One M8 Android Lollipop update to owners of the smartphone this week and in the process, enabled expanded access to its LTE network by activating the previously dormant Band 4 (1700 AWS-F band) for access to its XLTE high-speed network overlay. This update is expected to substantially improve coverage for customers that have been dealing with network congestion on the primary 700Mhz LTE network. The carrier is rolling out the update in waves and has posted a*detailed changelog*with the changes on its support page for the phone.

Its dated for about a week ago so I'm gonna say its the update we just got. I don't know what app we could use to see what bands are active or enabled. I'm sure there is something out there though.
Maybe it was Viper ROM but I am pretty sure mine has been active as of kit kat....as I can get speeds of 70-80 down in areas that only used to be 5-10

I wish i can get speeds like that
Hm, I had band 4 when I was running Viper and some other ROMs as I recall. I wonder if it enables Carrier Aggregation with band 4, which I asked last night in Q&A section.

Well depends on where you live....nowhereville Montana isn't getting xlte deployed as quick as metro NJ..but even then I'll get crazy fast speeds at work but if I walk a block away I get only .3 on LTE! So even in highly congested areas they haven't upgraded to xlte.
Use LTE Discovery app if you want to know what band and cell you're on. It's very useful.
"Lte discovery"app says I'm on lte band 13, guess my areas not band4 yet.
Same here in Tennessee
LTE Discovery is a real winner of an app. It's what I use as well.
Band 4 XLTE in central Virginia working like a charm.
Correction the cell tower on the other side of town is xlte band4 30Mbps up/10Mbps down

I thought the same thing...but if you follow the moving arrow (ex. turn your phone around in circles like a weirdo...you may eventually change to XLTE band 4 (happened to me after about 60 secs). Until this cool app I just tried bc of this thread...I didn't even realize XLTE was rolled out around here yet.
The XLTE tower must be far away though, bc I only get 1 bar of XLTE and my speed tests suck when locked on.
Speed Test XLTE: 18.69 D | 1.05 U
Speed Test LTE: 22.64 D | 11.68 U
Speed Test WiFi: 127.31 D | 44.21 U (screamer!)
