I'm using MIUIAndroid 2.8.3. I got tired of a custom lockscreen, so I put on the stock one. In my haste, I hit the lock button maybe too early while it was still applying. So I locked it, but when I tried to unlock, the screen stayed blank, but the capacitive buttons lighted up. I tried to hit volume up and the back button at the same time, but it doesn't unlock. But what matters is all I really want is to back up my SMS messages. I haven't backed them up for a week maybe, but I have some I'd like to spare. Can I back them up, access them from ADB, or am I out of luck here?
I'm guessing here but do you have a nandroid back up you can restore through recovery by pulling battery pressing volume down and power then going in and restoring your backup? That should give you what you had before you got locked out And at the time of your backup . This is what I would try first if it were me. Then you would be restored to normal and everything would be as it was the time of the backup. Hope this helps. Don't see why it wouldn't work. It's sure worth a try. Best wishes and hopefully this fixes you're issue.

I do have backups, but there are a few SMSs that are newer than the latest backup I'd like to keep.
I think there is a button combo specifically for this issue try volume down or volume down and power or.. volume + and power..

Tried that as well, still no luck. Stubborn as it seems, I'm not going to quit just yet. I'm kind of sure that there's a way to pull the file from root via ADB, I just don't know the command.

Yeah your best bet would be adb currently.. make a phone call to yourself and then press home button while in call !?

has this problem already came up if so I missed it a link would be nice to fix my phone Thanks
I could be misunderstanding your problem here but I think i had a similar issue... first of all make sure you're holding down the power button long enough to boot up. Seems to take 4 or 5 seconds with this phone.
Also when I had the issue i took out the bat, put it back, plugged into a wall charger and then held the power button that worked. But I think really my issue was impatience not holding the power button the first time long enough.
no i am the screen wont say updating or whatever when i hold the up and down button but it looks for a driver ?? and installs the Right driver
helpppppppppp your way to the search button.
Thread moved to proper forum.
You only hold volume down and power. I had the same issue. Holding both volumes will cause the phone to not boot.

So you flashed the recovery before you rooted. Try reflashing the original recovery. I don't know if that will work. You should have rooted then flashed recovery.

thats what im doing now but gewt stuck at waiting for bootloader to int for some reason
Well your g2x will never go out of the updating screen you have to wait until one click says it has transfered the file. Wait a minute or so after that and unplug the USB and put your battery back in the I would do a master rest.

thing is my lg screen is black can i still root with a black screen ? like i said only action i get out of the g2x is if i hold the vol up And Down and plug it in then i hear the sound of the computer finding it witch gives me hope
I would try recovering recovery befor trying to root again. I would do the nvflash but pick the original recovery instead of cm. Then after that master reset by original recovery which is hold power and down volume. Recovery will rest your rom. Rooting puts you root permissions I believe into a different partition any ways that's how a master reset does not wipe them. Your problem sounds like more of a recovery issue then root.

It is problem is it stays at Waiting for Bootloader int how long should that be there?
are you holding the volume buttons down and plunging in the usb before you select the version? you have to continue holding them the whole time. should pick it up in matter of seconds.

The rom pre installation dialog will come up and ask you for various options like wipe dalvik cache
And then just click OK
But I can't guarantee you that this will work!!

I know of a method to remap your Power key to one of the volume keys, and one of the volume keys to the Search key. However, this remapping only sticks when the phone is booted into ICS. AFAIK the remapping won't help you once you're in the bootloader and trying to access recovery. It also requires root, which you said you don't have...
If you're still interested in this, PM me, and I'll edit this post with the aforementioned method.

seems like my button just died completely. I was using stock for a while and the power button was acting up. Then I rooted and went with pixie, and this solved the power button issue. Then just yesterday it acted up again and today it was really erratic. and now it's pretty much dead. if you google "nexus s power button" you will see many people affected by this in the past few days.
i have the same problem, my power button is broken also cant bring it to the repair centre because i imported my phone. But as long as you already have clockwork recovery working properly, you can do pretty much anything: installing custom roms etc etc, in normal usage i use the app "fix broken power button" and that works flawleslly even on ICS.
and if you havent got clockwork recovery, i think there was a way to install it via adb fastboot, not sure how though....
Any idea how to root without power button??
Anyone willing to help me??
I can help
I too have a broken power button, and for me fastboot does not even work!
I have found a solution a made a script that all you need to do is launch with your PC! (credits to saurik for the exploit)
Hope this will help you
All you need to do, is run the script! Then, plug-in your phone (needs to be on with USD ADB DEBUG ON) and done!
You can download it here: http://www.mediafire.com/?qhefhtgs20fdtsd
This will root your phone, and then you can afterwards flash ClockworkMod from the market and then reboot into recovery =)
A work of advice though, make sure to install CyanogenMod7 which has an option to unlock with volume button!
Peace be with you
My phones screen seems to shut off and not wake up. I can tell the phone is on though because the buttons light up. And if I press and hold the back button the flashlight turns on. Also the volume rockers seemed to work but the screen stays off. Occasionally it seems to turn back on but but it'll just go back off again. Rebooting the phone doesn't working and I've also installed two different ROMs on it. Any advice on how to solve this?
Relock bootloader with fastboot oem lock cmd and download and run the ruu according to your phone version and see if the problem persists. If you don't know how to get into fast boot hold power and volume down until buttons stop flashing and keep holding volume down till you get See the screen with skating HTC men. Or if you have a backup in recovery you can restore from recovery and see if that helps your problem.

No. No backups unfortunately.
My other suggestions would be to make sure you don't have a corrupt zip. Downloading from chrome or from you phone I've had issues. Ei8 or ie9 works well for me. Hope you get it figured out.

That was happening to my phone. I found that if i applied pressure to opposite corners at the same time, the screen would come back. If i let go, the screen would return to black. Everything worked when I touched the screen, volume rockers, etc. I took it into AT&T and they gave me a new one under warranty. I was running CleanRom 5.1 at the time. I honestly do not believe my problem was caused by over flashing or any type of hacking. SO, try to flex or contort the phone in different directions and see if you can cause it to turn on and off.
I ended up having to use RUU. The problem seems to be fixed. Still don't know what caused it but at least it wasn't a hardware issue.
A thanks would be nice

I appreciate you taking the time to help. And anyone for that matter but unfortunately the problem is still there. Might have to return it. Hopefully I won't get any issues from ATT for being rooted.
I was restoring a backup I made in recovery and it got stuck at restoring data. Like stuck, over an hour. I held the power and volume to go into fastboot and it didn't come up. Just blackness.
Nothing I try can get it to boot or have any screen. Suggestions or did I just brick it?
EDIT: Forgot to mention, my led notification light is green meaning I am charged. (I went into this 100% battery) and holding the power makes capacitive buttons flash like normal, just no screens)

I was able to get it to the htc warning splash screen. Now after that it is a black screen that has a white/grey bar acrossed the top. Ugh.
So you can no longer access recovery or fast boot modes on your phone? If so, you may be screwed.

IF you can restart hold power and vol down till the capacitive buttons go off, then release the power and then hold vol down until bl comes up...(I know you tried this before but if it gets to the dev splash screen maybe you can get into bl and recov again.

Just for shyts, from recovery, wipe /system-/fac. reset/both caches- flash ROM, not a backup, and reboot.

My power button suddenly stop responding. I can tell cause when I'm using volume wake, everything's working fine. The problem is I can't proceed to recovery considering the power button is the only way to activate it. Am I wrong? Is there another way? Wanna restore to a previous ROM backup, just to be sure I didn't hit a wall with my current ROM. Any thoughts guys? Wanna be sure before I have my phone opened up.
Edit: I forgot to mention, I also used fastboot to reboot my phone but it says my phone is offline. Which led me to believe there is more to it than a hardware issue on my phone.

Update: I finally restored my backup using ROM manager and finally get into recovery using the search button as an altrenate for the power button. It looks like my power button is really broken. Will be using volume wake atm. My only concern now is how to get my phone online at fastboot. :-/
You can go to fastboot or recovery using some apps, like one called for CWM Manager. Or even use a command line in ADB.
You can't get fastboot because when the power button breaks it's like if the power button was stuck to ON. That glitches fastboot and you can't scroll to select recovery or anything of the sort.
Oh, thats is true. :/
Can your device power on ? If so use "adb reboot recovery"

Sorry for the late reply guys. I just had my power button replaced, was so busy crack-flashing when 4.2.2 arrived that I failed to come back and thank you all for all your inputs. Appreciate it! Now my only problem is that my phone won't go online using ADB. Well as long as I could go into recovery within the phone using my power button.. I'll concern myself with that in the future. Try flashing a factory image in fastboot. It might clear out some issues..maybe relock and unlock bootloader too after backing up your data if there is time for this operation .
