Whose LTE network will take the hardest hit with an LTE iPhone - General Topics

Whose LTE network will be crippled the most with an LTE iPhone AT&T or Verizon? The reason I ask this is, even though it is an Android forum, a large number of members have LTE phones and will be affected by this. I would like to hear peoples' professional responses, not AT&T/Verizon sucks. Please talk about the technology and how the increased number of LTE phones will affect their networks.

As a whole Verizon will probably not be affected much. Individual towers in densely populated areas....may. I know in my area a year and a half ago...when vzw was having 4g outages every week that I was pulling down 30+ and about 15 on the up with a rezound. I have went thru a bionic, RAZR, nexus, and have an siii on the way and over the course of the year and a half my speeds have gone down to about 10 to 12 down and 3 up. Tells me either vzw figured out the throttling thing where they say you won't really notice it ( more like capped speeds) or that many more have gotten LTE on vzw in the north Chicago neighborhoods.
Can't answer about at&t as I don't have their service.

I assume AT&T. I'm in Houston and they can barely keep a LTE signal right now. In the city, it fluctuates constantly.

Definitely Sprint.

Yupp! I'm with you. Here in Houston ATT is crap, especially in Downtown.

Hopefully the networks have been planning for this and are well prepared. They absolutely ought to be, considering that the iPhone 4S could have had LTE and they've had essentially an extra year to prepare. I know accommodating the record setting number of users will be tough, but I think they'll manage.

Sprint discussion

What is the status of Sprint?
They put a lot of money into supplying iPhones and they're probably hoping the EVO 4g Lte will bring them up some too. Their WiMax network cost them some big bucks, and now its costing them more to rebuild their network into an LTE one. The war between WiMax and LTE is similar to the technology war with HD-DVDs and Blu-Rays. Sprint went the wrong route though with their network choice in the beginning.
Sprint is out some money.
I hope in five or ten years, we don't see Sprint gone/bought out from the industry. What does Sprint have going for them? Really, over the other carriers? Unlimited data is really all I can think of.
I was with ATT for two years in West Virginia. Sprint had better network speeds than ATT at the time in WV. I am not sure about now. So my allegiance with Sprint stems from my better experience with them at that time.
Opinions? Views?
My experience with them has always been very slow data speeds (20kbs) and constantly dropped calls. I finally went to at&t and while it's more expensive, the better data speeds and zero dropped calls has been worth it for me.

No 4g, worth even buying the S III or should I wait?

I live in Omaha NE, and we still have yet to actually have 4g access. Anyone in an area without 4g have the Galaxy S III and still recommend it?
I sometimes go in spots where there is only 3g.Coming from my x2, even when only in 3g the s3 is faster and smoother then my old 3g phone, but everything is evidently gonna be 4g so you can't go wrong it's a nice phone.

Well I use to live in a 4G city, Wichita, KS. Now I live in a town with only 3G, and I still love this phone! 4G is awesome, but this phone is still amazing without 4G, 4G is just icing on the cake.

This is sort of like asking if you should build a gaming PC even though you only have dial up.
Your connection is just one part of the experience. It's up to you how smooth and fast you want everything else to be.
I work in Omaha and it has 4G all over... So does Council Bluffs.

When you say 4g, do you mean hspa+ or lte?
I live in an area with no lte, I get respectable hspa+ speeds. If you have no hspa or lte, then I find that surprising. I thought at&t set out to cover areas lacking hspa with LTE first. Thats why cities like Philadelphia just got LTE today.
Anyway i recommend getting the s3. Its the best LTE phone out by far and eventually at&t will cover you with LTE.

As it has been stated above...4g or no 4g this is (imo) the best phone out there.
I live in a non-4g area and I love the phone. I figure that whatever phone I get is only gonna be 3g (most of the time) so why not buy the best.
Plus it's like a bonus treat when I travel to a city with 4g and I see the little 4g icon pop up...It's like a special gift form the city to me
This phone is a beast, 4G or not. The processor, RAM, screen, functionality, development choices, and style are just a few things that should sway you toward buying this. Wait for what? I doubt anything can be better than the GS3 for another year.

Not sure what you're talking about. Omaha through Lincoln has great 4g service. At Eppley in Omaha last week, received 20 down and 10mps up on 4g using Speednet app.

Apple confused the hell out of everyone on the 4S. I frequently talk to people with the iPhoney that think they have 4G service. Also heard of an IPOD nano coming out that is labeled 5G? or something like that. I just wish they would continue to avoid 4G service and dread the day Apple users suck up all the 4G bandwidth.
SGS3 is an awesome phone, whether you are on 3G/4G-LTE it's going to kick your old phone to the curb. The phone is faster so I could possibly pull better speeds even on 3G than your current handset. If you travel at all you'll be 4G/LTE ready and when you finally get updated locally you'll see awesome immediately.
There is also huge support for the SGS3 because of the bootloader getting unlocked a few weeks back and of course because it's just such an awesome phone period.

While I'm not going to debate the usefulness of this thread, I dont see how you can say it has nothing to do with our phones. He is suggesting people post up/down speeds on 4G with their >Galaxy S3< before and after the iphone 5's release.

This is exactly what was going through my mind when I saw that the iPhone 5 had LTE. I was going to test this myself, but forgot, no better time to have posted this but now, great idea |OP|.
I know I was on Sprint before and the release of iPhone 4/4s screwed up their network capacity. They should have never let the crApple phones off of the AT&T network, none of us deserve to get screwed over like that because there are SO many iPhones. They need to be on their own network. I bet the shear number of iPhone customers is what led VZW to do away with the unlimited plans, since they no longer needed to "attract" customers and compete with AT&T's iPhone at the time, and I bet this whole "share everything" crap is a brace / preparation for the LTE data usage of the iPhone customers after the release of iPhone 5 tomorrow, but all of us have to pay for it too, even though most of us can't stand those things.
That sucks.......for everyone else
Well lets hope Verizon is upgrading those towers... and lets hope they have an option to turn of 4G! I rarely use it, but can't see them being happy if you couldn't.

Relax. The majority of the people who are getting the iphone 5 won't do much more than browse Facebook for hours and update their twitter. None of which will be remotely taxing on Verizons towers.
Just my thoughts of course. I could be wrong.

I don't foresee this effecting the network speeds nearly as much as you say. IF Verizon were the ONLY iPhone carrier then it might, but you have those users spread out over 3 (4) networks now, all carriers have stated that once that spread happened, all the networks went back to normal.
And do you have any clue how much LTE spectrum Verizon has their hands on?
And I agree with nosympathy, this is in no way specific to our phone.

How is AT&T's network in central NJ and NYC?

I'm currently trying to decide which carrier to go with for the Galaxy S4. I'm leaning towards Verizon, but I'm also considering AT&T because their non-shared family plan is cheaper if you go with less minutes. But I'm worried that their service might still suck, because we were with them until a few years ago and there were a lot of dropped calls, delayed text messages, etc. They also get rated poorly in Consumer Reports and other surveys. So I'm wondering if it's worth giving it a shot and hoping their service has improved, or if I should just go with Verizon.
There are three areas specifically that my family is at the most: Princeton, NJ and Brooklyn, NY and Flushing, NY. I'd love to hear from anyone with recent experience with AT&T in or around those three areas. Any experiences from people in the general tri-state area and New York City would also be great.

I live in Brooklyn and am running a SGS3 I9300 on AT&T's GoPhone service. Since it's the international version it doesn't have 4G LTE, but the 3G network is decent enough. I usually get around 2000Kb/s download when I run the Speedtest.net app.
I really don't like using AT&T though, but it's the only carrier that will work with the I9300's wireless bands, so I'm basically forced to use them or only get 2G. My next phone will be bought in the US and thus I'll be able to switch to T-Mobile or Simple Mobile or another reasonably-priced carrier. I would drop AT&T in a heartbeat if I could. I think they're easily the most evil of all the telecom companies (except maybe Comcast).

Sprint Spark....Where is it??

I feel like I'm the only one who is noticing that the greatly anticipated Spark for Sprint just disappeared from discussion once it launched. I'm not seeing any data speeds or discussions but regardless, has anyone had much success with it yet? I know for myself in San Antonio Tx, we barely manage 3g, no joke. San Antonio has been one of the first to launch 4g LTE and still has them in the same places. I was told literally by a sprint rep,
"Wait until Spark hits. Trust me, Sprint will be back in the game. You dont want to cancel your contract because you'll be sorry. Just wait till February, and perhaps even March." Well, Febuary is here and I see no difference. I get, 0.20 LTE speeds on a GOOD day, 0.01 mostly, so I Just keep my 3g on most of the time.
So what are you all's thoughts, because I am stumped right now what to make of all this. Is sprint spark just another joke?
BTW, here is the URl to some info on sprints website about it. I looked for my "0.01" speeds and found that my LTE speeds are ranked at the 2g speeds. Wow.
http://newsroom.sprint.com/presskits/sprint-spark.htm
Time to switch to T-Mobile sprint is nothing but a bunch of promises that arnt ever kept.
T-Mobile can achieve sparks speeds without sprints marketing gimmik with 3 bands and all

My Sprint Netgear Hotspot recently started displaying that (annoying) Spark icon. However, I'm in the Portland OR area and don't believe there is any service as of yet. I will say that the 4G LTE service here is outstanding and completely blows away the previous (almost non-existent) 4G WiMax service.
