Sorry for asking about this, I've searched around and find there are various posted and not sure which is correct one now.
I just got back a HTC Sensation from repaired that they replaced. IT comes with ICS already installed....so now I want to root it so I can unlock to use with other phone companies. I don't plan on using custom ROMs and would like to be able to receive future updates.
What's the best way to root the phone with this new firmware already installed? Can someone point me to the right guide? I see there's some all in one tool and also about unlocking the bootloader via the DevTool but I prefer not to lose warranty.
Thanks for the help
Well if your hboot is 1.27 you will need to head on over to HTC dev to unlock the boatloader and once you accomplish that install a custom recovery I would recommend 4ext and make sure smart flash is enabled and now you have two options you can root the stock Rom or you can download a custom Rom and if your comfortable with doing the wire trick to s off

So the only way to root is to unlock bootloader from HTC Dev first? All I want to do is get root so I can unlock the phone sim lock right now!

Hi,
Check HERE
Also I notice that you mentioned sim unlock you don't need to be rooted to unlock your sim unlocking your sim is referring to making your device carrier free meaning if in the U S you will have your choice of GSM carriers to choose from depending on how far you go with the sim unlocking process you could free it up from tmo and that will allow you to transition over to AT&T or you could free it up free it up for all gsm carriers like straight talk and your now there's is a script I saw in the dev section to unlock your sim I my self haven't tested it yet I can hunt it down for you if that's what your looking for however to run this script yes you will need to be rooted

Hi,
For sim unlock,look HERE
and maybe HERE
Malybru as given you two links and those are what your looking for and as I stated in a previous post you will need to have your device unlock and rooted to run that script so your your main focus right now is to unlock your bootloader and install custom recovery and then root your device and you may have to s off your device to run that script as I haven't tryed the script yet so be sure to read up on it more before running the script

Hi all
Is it me, cuz im not seeing the 'desire s' listed on the htcdev.com as an option to unlock the boot loader?
All I want to do is root my stock Rom. Not interested in trying any other roms.
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda premium
It's not listed but it works. Just select the bottom option "Other Supported Devices" and follow the procedure
Does this procedure get around s-on also ?
Concerns me why they haven't listed it.
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda premium
No, your device will be s-on, but the bootloader will be unlocked. It's almost the same.
I have no clue why they haven't listed it either.....
Can you still root with s-on ?

After you unlock bootloader via htcdev.com, yes you can
Thanks for your help. One last question, how do you root the installed rom?

Look for SuperOneClick in here, it will easily root your rom
Sent from somewhere around the globe using XDA app on my HTC Desire S
I unlocked the bootloader via htcdev.com (operation was OKAY).
SuperOneClick 2.2 hangs at step 7.
I'm guessing that you have a hboot 2.00...
When u used HTC.dev to unlock your HTC desire s you need to Install cwm or 4ext and then you can flash any Rom you like.
After flashing your HTC with the new Rom you need to fastboot the boot.img to your device cause your device is not S-off.
An other option would be downgrading. Do a few searches and you will be fine.
Otherwise post back and I'll help you out.

Hello,
Thank you for your help.
Yes I have the HBOOT 2.00.002 - Android 2.3.5
In the post : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390496
"dtronics" suggests 2 operations to do for s-offing for the Desire S :
1 - unlocking the bootloader (htcdev.com)
2 - using SuperOneClick 2.2
The second treatment hangs at 7th step.
Without downgrading the hboot (2.00.002):
If you have a link to a simple and complete documentation to doing s-OFF.
Thank you
Dos bootloader unlock deletes all personal apps, contacts, files or not?

What's better to do if I want to flash roms, htcdev unlock or S-OFF? I mean, do I have to do both, or just one, and what's better?
And what should I use, EXT4 recovery or ClockworkMod Recovery? Tnx
I would choose downgrading if necessary and S-OFF. The main disadvantages of the htcdev method are the loose of warranty and the need to flash manually the boot image every time you change the rom.
I personally like 4ext but CWM is also very good.
Next time you need some info gry to search the forum, this things were allready discussed.
As a mather of fact i don't think there's a thing left undiscussed in here.

I'm just looking for a simple root to mess with the clock speeds of my Sensation and allow tethering since its no longer free with the ICS update.
I tried I tried using Super Utility by kgs1992 but it didn't work. Do i need to unlock the boot-loader through HTC Dev for it to work?
Just need to pointed in the right direction.
Thanks

Depends in what hboot you have. If its 1.2+ the you will have to use jupuntobear to s-off. If you have 1.8- the use revolutionary to s-off. You can use htcdev to get an unlocked boot loader but you run the risk of losing your warranty. If I was you I would follow one of the jupuntobear guides by ganeship (I think that's him) but use the one that does not have htcdev unlock first. Once you are s-off you can use the super tool to root or flash a custom rom

Thanks a lot guys. Ganeshp was an excellent guide. I'm s-off and rooted wasn't as much of a pain in the azz as i though.
I plan on rooting a friends Inspire 4g and I was wondering which method should I use to root the phone? I understand there are 2 different ways. It's an HTC Inspire 4g 2.3.5 with the build number 3.20.502.52 cl380259. I can't seem to find any recent ways to find out how to do this except this on here:
http://tau.shadowchild.nl/attn1/?p=88
Is that the only way to do it now? I have experience with rooting. I've rooted 2 HTC arias in the past along with a moto back flip and atrix 2, so I do have rooting and flashing experience. Im just trying to get some more info before doing this. Thanks for any and all help.
Yes, you would need to do it that way for S-Off. You could also unlock the boot loader with HTCDEV only, but you will be S-On and get fewer options that way.

Well I plan to only flash one rom on this device and never mess with it again. Preferably CM9/10. I don't plan on messing with different roms after that. So if I root using HTCDEV, will I be able to flash one of those ROMS?
Yes. You will need to fastboot flash boot.img separately after the ROM.

Then you don't have an unlocked bootloader. You are S-OFF, which means that the nand partition security is off now. That allows you to flash anything you want...much better than an unlock bootloader only.

So if I just root and have S-OFF without having an unlocked bootloader, I can flash any ROM of my choosing? That seems like it's the best way to go or the easiest at least. Could you give me or mind PM'ing me the AAHK that you used Jrhodes?

Then you are in the wrong place. This is a developers site, you are suppossed to do your homework and read and do some research. A tutorial will probably lead you to a messed bootloader and belive me, that is really painful to deal with.
That thread has all you need to know. Even has a noob guide (the same that in my signature) that will help you out. Try that out and once you know what rooting and downgrading involves, you are ready to go.

As long as you follow instructions in the Hack Kit site and in the effen manual, chances are almost inexistent, thou modifying software always involves risks.
You have you be aware of that. Several thousands of dhd and inspire users have used the kit successfully, so that is your proof that it works flawlessly as long as directions are followed.

Same answer. If you follow instructions you shouldn't have problems. The risk is always latent, you are modifying software, but there are lots of success cases that backup the process.
Its very simple. I did this 4 days ago. Currently on 4.2 AOKP. All you need to do. Unlock your bootloader. Thats easy. Htcdev.com. create an account and follow the directions. This'll unlock bootloader. Then Download that boot.zip. extract the boot.IMG and put it in the fastboot folder. On computer, cd to fast boot folder and type fastboot flash boot boot.img. relock the boot loader. Then run the hack kit. Questions?

S-Off with AAHK is a much better option than S-On boot loader unlock with HTCDEV. With S-On you can only flash ROMs meant for the DHD, meaning no ported ROMs. Also, you need to fast boot flash a boot.IMG separately each time you flash a ROM. Also, you let HTC know and so you lose any warranty you may have. And radios can't be flashed. Look in the Ace Think Tank guide for more information.
You just answered all my questions man, I appreciate it...ill stick to what I know...its a different experience coming from a LG optimus one....

I bought this phone outright, and I don't like the Telstra network so I put an Optus SIM in. Which works just fine, however I now have an issue which may or may not be related. I have unlocked my bootloader, and have obtained root. I cannot get s-off however, tried all the methods in this forum. And when I try to install a new Rom, such as cm10 and all nightly versions, venom viper, and all other Roms I have tried I cannot get passed the start up logo (or I just get a pure black screen). Yes I have waited and waited for extended periods of time but it won't load. No I'm not new to rooted phones, and have followed all insructions properly. Not necessarily. It depends on your hboot version I believe.
I've never had to flash the boot image and I haven't done s-off.
@OP - did you need to s-off for any specific reason? You don't need to do this to flash a custom ROM. It's not required unless you want to reove the tampered text from the boot loader.
It makes life easier to have s-off. Besides I have issues with not having full access to something I have bought outright....lol
