There is always risk. Follow the steps EXACTLY for your phone and you should be OK. Most errors are user errors by skipping steps, skimming instructions, etc, etc.

Rooting is easy! Depends on which phone you use, it gets easier But anyway overclocking your phone drains the batt and your phone life would shorten so use it with care!!! There's a reason why phone manufacturer set a limit for the processor!!!!!

Aye go for it man don't be afraid! You should root it anyways so you can make a backup of the original setup that way if you OC and it don't do good simply go back into recovery and restore.

And out comes the same old drivel. This simply is NOT true. Some manufacturers make it more difficult for you to get your phone supported under warranty if you have rooted it, some phones you can just set it back and nobody can tell, and some phones it makes no difference.
Unless they can prove that you have done something to directly cause the fault (e.g. overclocking and burnt out the processor) they can't refuse to honour your warranty. If you have rooted your phone and the screen dies then it is obviously nothing to do with what you have done so they still have an obligation to repair it.

Depends how risk-averse you are. If the phone was 2 years of your life savings, then maybe don't do it.
Generally there is minimal risk as long as you follow all the instructions thoroughly, read everything and watch a few tutorials for good measure. But something can always go wrong.
Also, I wouldn't find overclocking a good enough reason to root my phone, but that's just me.

I'm pretty sure the term "bricked phone" has the implication that you cannot "unbrick" the phone. If you are so nervous about bricking your phone that you have to ask how to do it, perhaps you should unroot it.
Dunk it in the toilet for a few.
Couldn't you smash the Thunderbolt with an brick?

How about flipping this up. There are too many things NOT to do... How about just learning to use root tools, doing research, following directions & understanding what you are doing to your phone.
Please remember kids, always practice safe flashings.

Yes the term "brick" would mean a phone is in a state which can not boot to normal nor boot to recovery (normally doesn't boot at all or stuck in a boot loop). If you were able to "unbrick" the phone, then it was not in a "brick" state to begin with. I guess it would have been a "near brick". Anyhow, I am sure you can "brick" anything electronic. As mentioned before, pretty sure pulling the battery when doing a PG015IMG update via HBOOT would at least "near brick" it.

Wow everyone is such a comedian.. This is my very first android and i was wondering the same question for a while.
Un Bricking does it mean that we are not capable of Un Bricking it? or does it mean that somewhere out there, there is an super android guru that can un brick the phone.. just not you, me or the devs there.
Thank you
Misterdonut...That's Wat I was trying to ask....
sent from my rooted tbolt using XDA app
A "brick" is just that, something of no value and completely unusable or recoverable. By definition, if you brick your phone, it's dead.. for good. Short of erasing the hboot/recovery partitions(which may not even be possible.. is hboot hard-coded into the phone??) You have no real need to be concerned. There *should* always be a way to recover from mishaps.
There's some talk of the latest OTA bricking rooted devices, and if that turns out to be true, then there may be cause for concern, but even then, unless you're extremely careless.. you should be fine. Just follow directions for whatever you're attempting.. seriously, it's all easy, and if you have problems, you shouldn't be rooted, anyhow.

if you are rooted. I don't think there is anything you can possibly do to brick your phone (software wise). If in case it is "bricked" connect it to a PC and start the adb process of fixing it.
So where are we for a non-odin root for 2.3.6? It took only hours after this device was released for one click rooting proc to be posted.
Why is there no custom ROM counter reset proc? The counter was modified with a bootloader change on the GS II. Unfortunately this device was released with that same fix but I kind of expected someone to "fix" that...
If you don't mind me asking - what are the negative effects of a custom binary download counter?
cheesy for samsung to prove you have voided your warranty...
hmmmm. no interest or what?
I'm intrested in knowing now to reset the counter I got mine at 1 and it's bugging me like crazzy cause of the warranty lol

oh we know what needs to be done. Someone has to crack the low level bootloader code onROMs. Over there that have a non-hardened ROM and a hardened ROM. It is simply a matter of flashing the non-hardened bootloader then using a jig. Over here we have no non-hardened ROM to extract the bootloader code from. That said is why the code itself has to be cracked and compared to see how they shut it down...
If I knew how to do any of that, I would have done it and posted a solution. I know there are those here on XDA that do, it is just a matter of peeking their interest.
where is it....
I wonder if the jig for the S II will do the same for the skyrocket since they are similar.

Hello everybody.
I've reading the Infuse thread for some time now.
I saw some recurring themes that I would like to write about.
I came up with a survey that I think may be helpful.
(Try to see the humor in it.)
Here is the question: Do I need to root my phone; do I need a custom ROM?
Do you use your phone to make phone calls? If yes then: No, you do not need to root.
Do you use your phone for texting ? If yes then: No, you do not need to root.
Do you use your phone for light surfing? If yes then: No, you do not need to root.
Do you use your phone for simple games? If yes then: No, you do not need to root.
Do you use your phone as a PDA? If yes then: No, you do not need to root.
Do you use your phone as an alarm clock? If yes then: No, you do not need to root.
Do you use your phone as a camcorder? If yes then: No, you do not need to root.
Do you use your phone as to take pictures? If yes then: No, you do not need to root.
Do you want your e-mail to work correctly? If yes then: No, you do not need to root.
Do you want your APN not be screwed up? If yes then: No, you do not need to root.
Do you want your bluetooth to work perfectly? If yes then: No, you do not need to root.
Do you want your phone to work right out of the box? If yes then: No, you do not need to root.
However,
Are you a tinkerer? If yes then: you need to root and load a custom ROM.
Are you curious and want to learn? If yes then: you need to root and load a custom ROM.
Do you like boot loops? If yes then: you need to root and load a custom ROM.
Do you like to brick your phone? If yes then: you need to root and load a custom ROM.
Do you think you're a closet geek/nerd? If yes then: you need to root and load a custom ROM.
Do you have ADHD? If yes then: you need to root and load a custom ROM.
Do you have OCD? If yes then: you need to root and load a custom ROM.
Do you have a need for constant stimulation? If yes then: you need to root and load a custom ROM.
Do you like to frustrate yourself? If yes then: you need to root and load a custom ROM.
do you want to be a dev? If yes then: you need to root and load a custom ROM.
Do you secretly want to be a top geek/nerd? If yes then: you need to root and load a custom ROM.
Do you want other geek/nerd to pay homage? If yes then: you need to root and load a custom ROM.
Do you not have a hot gf to play with? If yes then: you need to root and load a custom ROM.
Do you get off of messing up a perfectly working phone to get a semi-functioning phone? If yes then: you need to root and load a custom ROM.
Do you find yourself stroking your phone calling it my precious? If yes then: you need to root and load a custom ROM.
Do you get off on getting thanks from XDA members? If yes then: you need to root and load a custom ROM.
Do you get off on getting your phone out of soft brick? If yes then: you need to root and load a custom ROM.
Do you get a chubby when you put your USB jig to get your phone out of boot loop? If yes then: you need to root and load a custom ROM.
Do you care if the display of the phone is a nansosecond faster than the way it is? If yes then: you need to root and load a custom ROM.
Are you a newbie that like to start a new thread about bricking your phone? Yes, you need to root and load a custom ROM.
In the process of coming up with this survey, I have concluded that it really doesn't make a whole lot of difference what phone model, what brand, what CPU or graphics or dual cores and what not...
It doesn't make a whole lot of difference if it's FROYO, GB, HC, ICS or FRIED DONUTS IN BUTTER AND LARD,
It's all about the addiction and the obsession.
Sad

Hey, I really apologize if I had offended anybody.
Honestly.
Mea culpa.
That was never my intention to insult or offend anyone.
You guys are really taking this way too seriously.
I wrote it as an attempt at humor in the general section and the Q/A section...not in the DEV thread, out of respect.
As I was trying to help new users out, I was running into the same questions over and over again.
If some of these guys would just read a few pages instead of asking the same questions over and over again. If they had bothered to surfed through the threads, they could have seen it.
I wrote it as a tongue in cheek comment...poking fun of myself as I had tried to learn the android and custom rom process. I had soft bricked and boot looped my phone plenty of times. I got a usb jig. I had read up on acid, thunderbolt and adrenaline etc..and opened up roms to try to understand it as well. I was poking fun at myself in the process. Until this August, I owned a flip phone and thought it was the bomb.
If you can't really see the comment as a funny for what it is, I apologize. I mean it. Take it to heart and move on.....
anyway,
Have a Joyous Season with your family and friends...
fwiw, I will enjoy my infuse for the next two years...
running what ever rom that works...
and for the record..I REALLY do appreciate the works of all the "giants" that have contributed to this phone...you guys know who you are...THANKS.
That my friend was perfect.. honestly.. So true.. everything up there is just hilarious. I don't understand how you couldn't see the humor in it.. Getting off to the usb as you stick it in your phone.. I loved every minute of that (reading the post.... and maybe other undisclosed things I WILL NOT mention here..... ). Thank you for bringing some comic relief to the barrage of the same old questions getting asked 500 different times/ways in 800 threads. I wish that I had thought to make that first.

Then, to make it so that they could actually use it with appulous or whatever it was called, he would charge an extra 5.. I think. So 15 bucks to jailbreak an iPod 2nd gen.. then eventually they got smart and realized that it was the easiest thing in the world..
And I'm sure that distance matters because he would get it back quicker.. No! You're not rooting my phone.. lol.... wow. Sad.

Super one click root is another option.
I guess it depends on what you're planning on doing. If it is just rooting, that's an easy way. It takes a few minutes.
If you're planning on changing roms, flash one/appropriate kernel with one of the one click packages in lumin's signature. It will give you root & cwm & voodoo lagfix.
Do not use rom manager from play store. It is not supported on this phone. It could brick ya.

Don't flash anything. Your in way over your head. Anyone with even the smallest tech ability could easily follow lumins guide. Bricking is a risk all of us take. Quit crying about it.
I learn the most in the hours after I brick my phone. If you are not willing to take the time to learn, and are scared to learn in a trial by fire, you really have no business trying to root your phone, especially if you are not going to follow directions, or take the time to learn what it is you are doing. You are going to brick your phone, and you are going to come here and start a hundred threads about it.....I suggest just paying someone to do it for you, or taking the time to read the instructions. Someone who knows nothing about rooting can follow that guide and learn how, that was what I did.

Little Doubt
Hello ppl
I have one question:
I own a Atrix 2 MB865
And i flashed this FXZ ---->>> InlineFlashing_Edison_67.21.125_CFC_P3_APBP.xml.zip
From this site: sbf.droid-developers.org/edison/list.php
My doubt is: from this rom, which is a oficial rom from AT&T, can i go back to GB or not?
Tks in advance

TRUE YOU COULD FLASH ANYTHING IF IT WAS UNLOCKED BUT WITH IT BEING LOCKED
YOU HAVE THE SAFE OPTION OF ALWAYS JUST FLASHING ANOTHER ROM OR RSD FLASH.....:victory:

Why yelling?
But good luck trying to convince anyone that's not a noon that a locked bootloader is a good thing.
You enjoy your locked phone.

DUDE ur not getting the point of a locked bootloader being noob friendly.......
u cant screw up on a locked bootloader like that on atrix 2 with BMM running...
my point being that you can flash anything and always have a fall back to rsd it .........:highfive:

Dude trust me root ur fone and try BMM amazing plus the best part about ATRIX 2 is bootloader is locked so u cant practically brick it unless you are messing around with the real core stuff............
4.3 roms are out plus the jbx kernals give you amaazing performance.............
plzzzzzzzzzz do go through the dev section and flash sm ROMS :highfive:

Sorry dude, i tried. My atrix 2 is unlocked but 4.3 mod you posted doesn`t get flashed via RDL. After extraction it ends with an error & stops executing. I am tired of these silly games.

I have to say, your statement "u cant screw up on a locked bootloader" is completely false. The majority of Atrix 2 bricks are a direct result of the locked bootloader with most of them being bricked by noobs. I frequent several different forums as i own several different devices and the Atrix 2 forum is the only one of those with an entire thread dedicated to bricked phones. Coincidentally, it is also the only device that I own that has a locked bootloader. So, I guess if you enjoy being limited and being locked down and treated like an idiot by Motorola, or if you have no intention of modding your phone, then the locked bootloader is what you want. If you're like me, and want to fully own the devices you spend your hard earned money on and do with the device as you please, then a locked bootloader is incredibly stupid (and occasionally infuriating).

RDL? Do you mean RSD lite? If so, of course it won't be flashed in RSD lite. RSD lite is for official firmware only. You use BMM to flash everything else. If you're tired of the "silly games" try reading a little bit to avoid making such simple mistakes. No offence intended. The #1 mistake you can make with this phone is not taking the time to read and research. Again, the direct result of ^^^ the locked bootloader.
If I had a dollar for every time I said that, I'd be making money in a very weird way.

i agree to what ur saying about the boot loader being locked but the maximum damage u can do is a soft brick when you use BMM....
so what im trying to say is that its noob friendly as in you dont have to worry bout hard bricks if your using a locked bootloader wid BMM
maximum damage is a boot loop or a rom that maynot work
"AND I QUOTE ITS NOT A GOOD THING THAT THE BOOTLOADER IS LOCKED BUT ITS EASIER TO FLASH FOR A NOOB "
There's value & truth to both sides. As I get older I'm getting less adventurous. My concerns are that my MB865 is unlocked to freeze programs with TBP. I used to uninstall, now I freeze. And I am very thankful for BMM so I can make Nandroids. That's about it now for me.

I can see what you're saying to a certain extent. I've flashed the FXZ so many times now that it has become routine. Meanwhile my Skyrocket with its unlocked bootloader was only on the stock ROM for less than an hour on the day I got it and I've never had to flash back and start over with it like I do with my A2. Coincidence? I think not.
That being said, I've always felt that people that don't want, or haven't the ability, to mod
their phones buy iPhones.

If you're going to keep calling yourself old, you'd better be older than me ( 38 ) or I'm going to be offended.
