I'm pretty sure the term "bricked phone" has the implication that you cannot "unbrick" the phone. If you are so nervous about bricking your phone that you have to ask how to do it, perhaps you should unroot it.
Dunk it in the toilet for a few.
Couldn't you smash the Thunderbolt with an brick?
(Sorry... couldn't resist. )

How about flipping this up. There are too many things NOT to do... How about just learning to use root tools, doing research, following directions & understanding what you are doing to your phone.
Please remember kids, always practice safe flashings.

Yes the term "brick" would mean a phone is in a state which can not boot to normal nor boot to recovery (normally doesn't boot at all or stuck in a boot loop). If you were able to "unbrick" the phone, then it was not in a "brick" state to begin with. I guess it would have been a "near brick". Anyhow, I am sure you can "brick" anything electronic. As mentioned before, pretty sure pulling the battery when doing a PG015IMG update via HBOOT would at least "near brick" it.

What do you want us to say there is really no real way to brick this phone. So stop being an ass and just realize that an ruu erases everything and puts your phone back to the way you bought it.

Wow everyone is such a comedian.. This is my very first android and i was wondering the same question for a while.
Un Bricking does it mean that we are not capable of Un Bricking it? or does it mean that somewhere out there, there is an super android guru that can un brick the phone.. just not you, me or the devs there.
Thank you
Misterdonut...That's Wat I was trying to ask....
sent from my rooted tbolt using XDA app
A "brick" is just that, something of no value and completely unusable or recoverable. By definition, if you brick your phone, it's dead.. for good. Short of erasing the hboot/recovery partitions(which may not even be possible.. is hboot hard-coded into the phone??) You have no real need to be concerned. There *should* always be a way to recover from mishaps.
There's some talk of the latest OTA bricking rooted devices, and if that turns out to be true, then there may be cause for concern, but even then, unless you're extremely careless.. you should be fine. Just follow directions for whatever you're attempting.. seriously, it's all easy, and if you have problems, you shouldn't be rooted, anyhow.
Sent from my CM7hunderBolt using XDA App.
if you are rooted. I don't think there is anything you can possibly do to brick your phone (software wise). If in case it is "bricked" connect it to a PC and start the adb process of fixing it.

Hi, everyone, I've recently HARD BRICKED my Samsung Galaxy MODEL: T959V with T-mobile.
First off, I got pattern locked on my phone, yea I know I'm an idiot, LOL. Next I totally forgot my gmail password so I could not log back into my phone.
So then I next decided to flash back to stock with odin 1.7 and T959UVJFD. tar file from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1047087.
As a result, my phone would boot to the loading screen with the dashed circle and a battery display in the background and thus would not finish booting all the way.
So I figured I would do more research and found that people would try flashing with the Eugene_2E_JK2_Froyo from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...833024&page=49 and after flash back to stock.
After I flashed with the Eugene rom this was when the phone completely died and would not turn on. I tried the take out the battery, holding down and up volume button and plugging into computer method but the computer would not detect it anymore.
Now I don't know what to do. I realized I was flashing with the Galaxy Vibrant kernels with Odin and now, it won't turn on anymore and can't boot into download mode. It is also not being detected my computer when I plug it in. I'ts a blank screen.
Please help.. Thanks, and appreciate it.

2 basic questions. I'm running an atrix 2 right now but have been looking at this phone. I like the way Motorola runs android, and I remember having an epic 4g and I didn't like it. So obviously I don't wanna go stock, is the bootloader locked? And how good are the ROMs that have been released? Any input is greatly appreciated
A far as out community its awesome devs are nice, roms are smooth no major issues. samsungs are easy to root and UN root plus using Odin is super easy if you're soft bricked
I use nexusmod4 btw

Sounds good, you guys respond fast too, I like it there's no way to hard brick is there? Lol happened once to me with the first atrix -.-

People here are bricking their phones by flashing ROMS for other devices or restoring a backup from a different phone that they saved, and some have checked repartition in Odin which is a big NO NO. That's what mostly is going on here for an unfortunate few. If you read and follow instructions, you'll have a pleasant time.
Edit: Don't feel bad, I bricked an Atrix the first day I got it. I did learn to read more before attempting unlocking BL and rooting.

Why would you blame ROM Manager for your mistake?
A. Anytime you flash anything (even if its the correct ROM flashed the correct way (CWM)) you always assume responsibility yourself.
B. You flashed a T-mobile ROM on your AT&T Skyrocket. If done right, it usually works, but it still adds extra risk.
C. You said you were "just messing around". Anyone that doesn't want a bricked phone should take flashing or modifying anything serious...not just messing around.
D. Most of the ROMS you are supposed to flash on the SkyRocket give detailed directions in the OP. Any I have sen all say to use CWM and give great instructions.
I don't see how any of this is ROM Managers bad business? Hopefully this will be a good tale of precaution for others before they brick their phone not paying attention. Sorry to hear about your phone, but take the blame for yourself...not ROM manager.

Thanks. I'm not trying to give the guy a hard time. He just bricked (atleast soft-bricked) his phone so I'm sure he really is pissed. But blaming an app for it when it isn't the apps fault starts alot of confusion. If something really is wrong with an app, we all need to know about it so it can be tested / fixed/ avoided / reported / etc...If the fault is with the phone's owner than the phone's owner needs to take responsibility for the problem and stop blaming the creators of useful apps (and ROMS) for the problems.

It bricked because ROM manager doesn't recognize the recovery on the skyrocket. It's something in the first line of the app.
Although, I might agree with you and blame ROM manager also if it let you flash a ROM while it couldn't detect a recovery. That's just straight up ****ty oversight on the developer.

Try Samsung first. Tell them it just derped one day when you tried to turn it on. If they believe you, it might take a week or two but you'll get another phone. Samsung will just fix it and give it to the next person that has a warranty replacement as a "referbished" unit. They won't lose money and you will get a new phone. That is if they believe you.

Ok,
I'm trying to Unroot my phone and I've looked all around, including outside of XDA and I cannot find a fix. The K0nane method is a no go. Everytime I run it through ODIN it fails, giving me the DL screen of death on my phone. (phone----caution-----computer) I have to reflash the CWM .zip and it works again.
Can someone please PLEASE point me in the direction of a comprehensive unroot method? It would be greatly appreciated.
(yes I've looked, I've searched, I've combed, I cannot find anything that works for my Skyrocket.)
Any idea why Odin method doesn't work? Try the tar from sammy. Try a different version of Odin. Try a different computer or USB slot. Theres no reason it shouldn't work. Maybe reinstall drivers. Have you tried all that?

Have you Odin'ed the .tar from sammobile.com yet? It will take you back to original 2.3.5 unrooted and 3e recovery. Seems you are comfortable with Odin. Your phone will be unrooted. Make a backup of calls, schedules, messages and etc. With Kies then restore after you flash back to stock. You will have to redownload all of your apps. If you had a nandroid of 2.3.5 you could restore it then use the zergrush exploit to unroot.

Make sure your phone is connected via USB at moment you place the phone into firmware update (download mode) konane tar and Odin should work I hope that this is mistake you are making and that it works out for you mate.
---------- Edit---------
Make sure the phone is hooked up to the computer and then do the same step you would do to place the phone into recovery mode, without the USB cable connected your phone will not go into download mode. Make sure none of the boxes on the top are checked in.

Odds are if it doesn't work for your skyrocket means you are doing it wrong . Odin failing can happen for a variety of reasons. Bad usb cable, not using a Motherboard usb port on PC (if desktop use rear USB ports, don't use any adapters or external USB hubs), not using Download mode. Just to be sure run ODIN as admin. Plenty of references in general and Q&A.

I'm trying to update my HOX and for some reason it won't happen. My phone downloads the latest OTA (4.0.4?), the phone restarts, goes to the install screen, the progress bar gets a quarter of the way, then a phone with a red triangle pops up. I have no idea what's happening. The phone will eventually restart again, and a pop up will show up and say, "update unsuccessful, please try again later."
Can someone please shed some knowledge. I'm pretty sure this phone isn't rooted or anything. Android is pretty new to me, coming from iOS after 5 years.
It's helping you from making a mistake.
If you accept the ota, then it's lights out for you if you want to unlock or root. Search a little bit, there's a thread with a pre-rooted 2.20 update on here. I'd recommend that. Good luck!
PS: My phone did the same exact thing. I was rooted, which I undid temporarily using Voodoo Rootkeeper, and also I had uninstalled some system bloatware using Titanium Backup. That was enough to cause the ota to fail. Thankfully.

Not sure what the problem is but if your dead set on taking the update and losing the ability to root or unlock in the near future the ruu is availible in the dev section or you can download it direct from HTC dev. I would highly recommend you do a little more reading before taking the plunge

Thanks guys. I'll do a little more reading I guess. I'm not that concerned about rooting. Just want this phone updating and to figure why this is happening.

Hold your tongue before the angry mob of pitchfork-weilding purists descend on you for not wanting to root! LOL
If you're new, I guess it makes sense, but there is a lot you can do with root, pretty basic stuff, that you can't without it. Like fixing the linkify issue and unlock the tethering app, and the built in tools like flashlight and the FM tuner.
So let the ota fail all it wants while you do some homework. Then call the shot. Good luck.

The Android gods are trying to give you a second chance at rooting. Consider yourself lucky.
Titanium backup your apps+data, factory reset. Anyone else think of anything different?

If he doesn't want to root, he can read and be better informed. GG.

i would root the phone just to remove the bloatware, AT&T installs alot of it and some your can uninstall with titanium backup some youll want to freeze to make sure it doesnt F your system up. so much crap installed out of the box. Cleanrom is good, and i have used the prerooted 2.20 update as well both are good, im currently back to cleanrom, runs stable and i dont have to go crazy freezing and removing bloat

Rooting is growing on me. Pretty much like jailbreaking an iDevice?
Anyway, I upgraded my HOX using the computer RUU program from HTC's site. Can the phone still be rooted? I read something about a One-Click Root. Can someone point me in the right direction as I continue gathering knowledge
*edit*
Can the One X be downgraded back to previous firmwares? I'm on 2.20 now, from reading, it doesn't look like there's a root.

There is currently no root exploit for the 2.20 update and because there was also a new hboot in that update downgrades are not possible either

Ah, okay. Typical rookie mistake and upgrading. Guess, I'll be waiting for one then. With rooting are there any ETA's on when one will be out, or the developers keep it hush-hush like iOS guys?
I really do want to take this AT&T crap off my phone but I shall wait

No eta most of the work on any root exploit is usually done behind the scenes more because of the fact that some previous exploits were security holes so not revealing till it is verified as working prevents att or HTC to block or patch it.
