So sorry guys, I couldnt find an answer through search. I rooted using Noxious Ninja's Windows program. Then unlocked bootloader, then flashed to CWM 6.0.1. I downloaded Beans Touchwiz ROM and I copied it to Root, now I rebooted in Recovery to install the ROM from zip but there is no Root folder, but I still have the Bean ROM in my Downloads folder as well. Can I install it from there or do I HAVE TO install it from Root directory?
So sorry guys, Ive been at this for hours LOL and have a terrible headache.
You do not have to flash from your "root" folder.
You may do so from your downloads folder perfectly fine.

thanks, now only if i can delete this thread.
I dont know if your still here, but immediately after installing the ROM from .zip the directions say to restore... I just click restore and it like wiped out the ROM I just installed and put my phone the way it was before!!! Do I not restore from Recovery after I install a ROM?
No you make a back up before you name any modification to your device. And if you bork it you can restore then. Don't restore unless your not happy with new rom or you messed something up

Quick? Along these lines...... if I just backup my data, could I flash a new rom then flash data, would that restore all my data, and settings, or would It not be compatable from rom to rom

Don't do that.
The data's not compatible, yes.
Edit: Sometimes the data is compatible, e.g. if the dev says so, in which case you can dirty flash over without wiping the data.

Last night I acctually got CWM to install and do a nandroid backup OK, but I forgot to backup the backup directory before continuing to flash the 4G_Fix then as everyone found out it wiped my External SD. I guess that's what happens when you stay up too late. I was able to Oden-Tar back a couple times but could not get the CWM to do a clean backup after that. Sure wish I had that backup file.... Oh Well...
Since this doesn't have CWM, this will not work.

I generally and carefully follow instructions well...but here's what I've done. Bootloader has been unlocked and device rooted. Had been consistently backing up with cwm...updated to ics without issue. I had trouble with the jelly bean update so i thought i waz installing it from my laptop...but some how installed the ics download which wjped my system and left me unrooted etc. I rooted the new ics and installed rom manager trid to restore former cwm backup..but have check sum error..can i some how restore a previous cwm backup...or am I sol and have to start over?

You can't.. simply because of file system change and different signs after being rooted again. Advice, use another revovery , not cwm, if you plan to go for jellybean, mount points on jelly ran have somehow changed with different symlinks ..

So I rooted, unlocked, backed up and all. I just want to get a new rom and I downloaded rom toolbox. Can I just hit let's say cyanogenmod and will it just download on my phone? Are there any other precautions I should worry about?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
I have to ask first, how did you unlock your bootloader? If you used EZ Unlock, which version did you use to unlock? Depending on how you answer determines what step you take next.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I used version 1.1
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
Aight cool, as long as you backed up your IMEI using this method then you're free to flash whichever rom you want. Do you have a custom recovery installed, such as ClockWorkMod? If not, download EZ Recovery from the Play Store and select flash recovery for CWM 6.x. Once down reboot into recovery and perform a Nandroid backup.
If you have down all the above already, disregard it. I haven't used Rom Toolbox so I will give you my download process as if I'm dowloading the rom from xda.
For Cyanogenmod
1) Download CM10 as well as the respective GApps (google apps)
2) Boot into recovery:
-format data
-wipe cache
-Go into Advanced/Format Dalvik Cache
3) Now flash the rom, just select "Choose Zip from Sd Card), install the CM10 rom zip.
4) Install the GApps zip
5) boot into the rom and you should be good to go
I don't understand the point of backing up the imei.. Do I HAVE to do it??
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
If you don't...there's a chance you might lose it and the you won't have your mobile data on your phone. Plus its more of a pain in the ass to restore it than back it up. Do yourself a favor and back it up..it isn't that difficult and can save you a ton of time in the long run..and possibly future posts on how to recover it.

You don't have to, but some people have lost IMEI (hasn't happened to me personally) and if you don't have a backup you can end up in permanent roaming mode as I understand it.
The backup is easy to do (I did A and B, didn't bother with C) and buys you some peace of mind.

Yes, you absolutely have to back-up your IMEI before you flash ANYTHING. The reason the IMEI is important is basically because it ties your phone to the carrier's network. If your IMEI is lost, you will essentially have a brick in your possession (no calls, no data, nothing). Right now, if you look under Settings/About Device and scroll down to IMEI, you will see a set of numbers. If this is "lost" it will read either 0 or some other set of numbers and you won't like the restore process to recover and reconnect your phone to Verizon's network. The Comprehensive IMEI/EFS Backup steps take a minute to do in comparison to the headache and lengthy process it will take to restore your phone to working order.
I think you should do some reading there before you flash and understand why it's important. It's explained fairly well and clearly even for novices.
Also, here's a link to DroidStyle's Guide to everything important on the GSIII.

I would like to install a custom ROM on my phone.. what are the necessary steps to follow before doing so ?
First, make a backup of you current rom. Then I would just go a head and follow whatever directions are supplied for the rom you want (some roms require special work). If no instructions are presented, do a wipe (factory reset or whatever) through cwmr, wipe the dalvik cache (under advanced), and install your rom!
Good luck I'll gladly answer any questions/problems you have.

It wasn't that. The only thing you must do before installing it is to root your phone, after that you just follow the custom rom's specific installing instructions.

If u can't find then try installing recovery mod again.

I installed recovery again, I found the toggle signature verification option, could you tell me how toggling signature verification makes a difference?
By toggling signature verification, verification of digital sign of your zip file is skipped. Thus allowing to use/ flash ROMS( most of them are unsigned)

Don't just say it.... hit THANKS
The last couple of times I experienced this
The last couple of times that I got stuck in a bootloop, what fixed it was a re-wipe of data, cache and dalvik after the installation of the ROM. Don't know if that helps at all but hope that it does. That could be ROM specific, but it might be worth a shot (easier than restoring to stock again).
Examples of where developers have suggested wiping cache/dalvik after flashing the ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957348
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1822409
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1964339
Can't find where I saw the wipe data section, it was somewhere.
Also, I use SMS backup, which syncs SMS's with gmail, so you can back those up and restore should you change again. Available in the play store.
Everything was fine with the root however I used a font app installer that got the phone stuck in a boot loop (on the rainbow screen). How do I get back to rooted JB?
Did you do a back up of your original rom? You need to get back into recovery...
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
No I didn't. I didn't see that in the instructions or I missed it. Any thoughts on how to get back to rooted JB?
Well if the font app got you into the boot loop then I don't think you lost root, I would get back into recovery wipe cache and hit reboot... See if that works... Good luck
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Unfortunately, I tried that. I think I did an accidental factory reset too but nothing has brought it back from the boot rainbow screen.
Did you unlock using EZ Unlock v1.2? You only mentioned that you rooted.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
No, I didn't use that. I followed the instructions to root found here (worked no problem until I met that $&#^%#& app) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439 I think I can reset using Odin I just don't know what to use
Aight, well did you unlock the bootloader? Your response dictates the suggested route to resolve this.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I did follow the instructions to unlock the bootloader
If that's the case then you just need to boot into recovery and flash a rom. If you were running just stock rooted & unlocked VRBLK3, it's easier to just flash a rooted stock rom like the official VRBLK3 leak here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2034118
Try just flashing that, without wiping, then boot into the rom.
or
If you were on a custom rom, just reflash that rom via recovery and you'll be fine. Unfortunately you lose all your settings of you wipe data in recovery so try reflashing either option without wiping if you absolutely need to try recovering whatever data already exists in your current rom. If this doesn't work, format data, wipe cache then flash the rom.

I will give it a shot and let you know. Thanks so much! I was on stock ROM btw.

Yes it does need to be there. If you have an sdcard just drag and drop onto it directly then flash in your custom recovery. Conversely, you should be able to boot into recovery and try connecting your phone to the laptop then dragging the zip over.
The longer method will be to Odin flash VRBLK3 and start all over from there.

Aight well since that failed, you have to do this the long way: Odin flash the VRBLK3 rooted image from your laptop onto your phone. Choose one of the two images for VRBLK3 and follow the directions.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984436
Edit: I realize I didn't ask but do you have an sd card?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
That worked! Thanks so much. Now, what is the best practice for backing things up so that I don't have this problem again? Should I root first then backup? Do I still have to unlock bootloader? Just wanting to handle this properly from this point forward.
It should be rooted already if you installed the Odin files from MrRobinson thread. It should come with either SuperSU or SuperUser correct? You also should still be unlocked but you can re-unlock using EZ Unlock v.1.2 from the following thread and you're undeniably unlocked. You'll hear a brief audio message if it worked.
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/32456-app-920-ez-unlock-14-easiest-way-to-unlock-your-bootloader/
Also, please perform a nandroid back in CWM so you have something stable to return to if something goes awry in the future. That backup would have cut all this down to one simple step. You don't need to be unlocked to perform a nandroid however you do need to be rooted with a custom recovery.
Lastly, perform an IMEI backup using the "Comprehensive IMEI Backup" thread in the dev section. Do this and save the resulting Synergy zip from backup methods A and B in more than one place not on your phone. This is more so a precaution because flashing things in recovery can and may result in a complete loss of connection with Verizon.
