Hi all,
I have several questions concerning SD-EXT partition.
Is SD-EXT partition still useful in ICS?
I partitionned my SD card with 4EXT (recovery): one partition of 4GB in EXT3 format, and remaining space as FAT32. I tried several browser apps (ES Explorer, Astro and Root Explorer) but none of them shows "/SD-Ext" root directory, is there something to do to show it?
When I choose to move an application to SD Card, it seems that my application is moved to my FAT32 partition in "\.android_secure" directory with a "*.ASEC" file extension, so it seems that my SD-EXT partition is not used! How to move application to SD-EXT partition?
(optional) Is SD-EXT partition still available to OS when SD Card is mounted in USB with the computer (maybe a stupid question) ?
(optional) In 4EXT, what is the effect of mounting or unmounting "/cache", "/sdcard", "/sd-ext", etc. ?
Thank you in advance for your answers.

Hi,
Sensation has 1 GB of internal space.
There is no longer any need for ext 3 or 4 partitions on the sd card.
Format the card to FAT 32,and enjoy ALL of the space for music, films, pictures, backups, etc.
c'est bien ça.

I don't understand why do you need ext partition for sensation. It has enough memory for most of the app you needed. All games u can install to sd card. No need for ext at all. I tried to use ext before had lots of problems so would recommend just don't use.

Thanks all, it seems that you all agree to say that SD-EXT is useless with "Sensation", so I'll probably give up with this feature...
As I like to understand things in general, it would be great if an expert could explain why I don't see my SD-EXT partition (created with 4EXT) with any of the most known browser, and how to move Apps to SD-EXT instead of "\.android_secure" of my FAT32 partition...
I am NOT an expert ,hope you don't mind , but this is how I install apps to my sd card. I believe you have the ability to control there destination with this app. there are SEVERAL applications in the play store for rooted devices to move applications to sd card. I prefer one called links to SD because it does batch installations or un installations if need be to the SD card. It's very easy to use. I love it when changing over to a new SD card . I can simply batch install ALL the applications I want to my SD card in one step. Hope this helps. Best wishes .

Thanks for your reply but just for your information, I also tried some apps from the Play Store (APP2SD, APP 2 SD), but they all do the same action as the built-in function "move to SD" that can be found in "Settings=>Applications" that's to say move the app to "\.android_secure" and not to my SD-EXT partition.
Best wishes.

Hello,
I have secondary partition on my SD card with ext4 filesystem on it.
With help of Link2SD i can use this partition for installed apps.
So the question is, when i create a backup with 4EXT (currently installed) or CWM does it include links and actual files from the SD card?
Got also a ext and ext1 seems to be a strange mounting problem..
It works but s2e cannot find the ext patition..

Hi,
4EXT nandroid backup takes a complete snapshot of your phone system, settings, data, and apps.
It does NOT make a backup of your sd card.
So, I would think that if you restored the backup, and you had not moved the apps in your ext4 partition, then they would match up again.
Why are you using an ext4 partition, anyway?
Isn't 1 GB of space on the phone enough for you?
software logic
well,
in linux filesystem, and in windows nowdays too, any storage can be mounted anywere, so if backup software differentiate external storage vs internal storage, it probably should follow symlinks and backup application from extended filesystem as well.
it could be a feature request
Could someone please tell me how to use hybrid data2sd and what are the pros and cons of it
A detailed explanation would be preferred

There are many threads about this subject, but i will explain. As you know our phone has a low internal memory problem and you can't install so many apps. You see every user app and data is stored in /data folder in internal memory. So developers found a trick to increase the internal memory. When you partitioned your sd card there will be a similar folder /data and it is linked with the internal memory /data all the data from there to the /data folder on sd card. Now the phone thinks that this folder is actually the internal memory and sends all the apps to the sd-ext.This is Data2SD. But the /data folder contains many folders...for app (/data/app) and for dalvik cache(/data/data) and with HYBRID DATA2SD you can choose which folder will go on sd-ext .It is recommended to only transfer /data/app on sd-ext because transfering the dalvik cache could slow down your phone.Hope that helped.Cheers

I will try to explain in simple lang....
On android OS, users applications and data is stored in /data folder (partition) in internal memory. Since g3 have less memory, it has restrictions on how many apps you can install and blah blah...
So out greate developers do a trick to increase internal memory.
When we have partitioned SD card, there in new partition, they create a similar folder stucture of /data. and link internal memorys /data to point to sd card data folder. This link is similar to a shortcut. Android OS thinks that the /data folder is there in internal memory and it reads and writes to it but actually that data goes to sd-ext partition and thus the size of internal memory dose not increases as you install apps. This is Data2SD
/data has many folder...majorly for app (/data/app) and for dalvic cache (/data/data). If you are not mounting entire /data to sd-ext, but selectively mapping each folder you want to sd-ext, then this is called HybridData2SD. For ex, I prefer app dir (/data/app) to be mounted on sd-ext but not the cache (/data/data). Cache should be on phone as its accessed so much and makes my phone lag If i put it on sd-ext.
hope this clears the concept.

Where shall I refer to know how to partition sd card?
Sent from my GT-I5800 using xda premium
@partition of the sd card is very easy. You can partition your card directly from cwm recovery or using a program called MiniTool.Be sure to backup your sd cards data...
I used Link2SD first to create a partition , it did create a external partition but it showed me every time that the script couldn't be mounted.I tried it with ext2/3/4 as well as FAT 32/16 but no use.Now I want to repartition my SD card and want to try it again with d2ext.How to repartition my card? I tried to format it after creating a back up but it is still showing that it has a external partition. plus, I am not getting the option of 'partition sd card' in the advanced menu in the recovery.
What to do?
can u be more precise!
Use MiniTool partition manager(computer) for it.
Create partition with FAT32 of desired space.
Insert SD card in phone
And open link2SD, it will ask you for script.
Try with Fat32 or ext2.
It should work.

Hey , I am using custom rom (Jaggy Rom) on my HTC explorer, its working perfectly. I am using 2GB card, but where is my 512 mb gone i mean , apps are automatically installed in SD-card but in FAT partition, so question is what is ext-4 partition for? Where it is used?
And 2ndly i am also planning to change my sd-card from 2gb to 4gb, can u help plz. Thanx
if you have created a partition in the SD card you need to use a memory increasing script like Mount2SD or Ungaze...when you install this script the 512MB of the ext-4 partition will show up as your phone's internal memory.

Thanks for reply, mount2SD is preinstalled in jaggyrom 4.1, and will you help me on changing my SD card?
and how can i confirm if apps are installing on SD card. Mount2SD is installed, and i think script is working , because my phone is showing constant internal memory on installing apps (i.e about 160 mb even if i install apps or uninstall them)
changing your SD card as in? what are you asking, please be clear...
and in Mount2SD it usually shows the partition memory added up in the internal memory.I haven't installed Jaggyrom anytime but i have used Mount2SD and it always showed me the partition memory as a part of my internal memory....so not sure what's wrong.
Download disk usage app from play store..it will show how much memory is used in your SD card as well as your internal memory..just so you will get a clear idea

Changing my SD cards mean i want to switch the card, i m using 2gb currently and i want to replace with 4gb or 8gb
If you want to replace it make sure you buy a class 10 SD card..because most of people using sense based ROM are experiencing random reboots with class 4 SD cards...class 10 SD cards are much faster while transfering files...I would recommend 8GB class 10 SD card.
Alright but i have installed custom rom. When i take out my card from phone it dosn't works, and i want to copy previous sd-ext partition data to new card can u help how can i
I don't think so that any of the CWM or TWRP recovery supports the back-up of SD-ext..I would rather recommend you to use Titanium back-up to create back-up of all your current apps and than transfer the titanium back-up folder in your SD-card to your PC/laptop and than insert your new SD card and paste that titanium back-up folder which contains the back of all your apps (including apps in SD-ext) and download the titanium back-up app via play store and restore those apps.
Well thanx, What if i clone/copy my old ext partition to my new card's ext partition?
I don't think that will work. the best option you have is to make a titanium backup. if you don't wanna do that then save your sd card data ( data in fat 32 partition) and paste that in your new card. it will save you game progress, but titanium backup is the best way to go.
Well, that means i have to make a titanium backup and thn again install the custom rom i wil lose my settings

Good morning all !!!!
I have done an ample amount of reading and I am still confused by the topic a little bit. And the post I came across were rather old. I just bought a 32G micro SD card for my galaxy s 4g running (wicked rom 9.1). This rom finally has the ability to move apps to SD. My question is, is it really necessary to partition your SD card for any reason??? What are the benefits? I still do not get he concept. I can only find the ways to do it. but not the reason.
*BUMP*
so.... I still did a bunch of reading, and did a SD card wipe attempted the 2nd partition and using link2sd and seems that the 2nd partition is not being recognized? can someone point me in the right direction?
Partitioning the SD card!
Actually, partitioning gives you the benefit of using space in your SD Card to install apps or use app data, instead of cramming it all up in the phones' internal memory. In other words, the Second Partition acts as the internal memory of the phone. So creating a 1 GB partition for a device with low internal memory allows the user to install more apps and doesn't let the internal memory decrease.
Link2SD can only accept partition with the proper scripts, i.e if the SD card has been partitioned with Ext2 then Link2SD must also be given the command for creating scripts as Ext2.
It is usually recommended to partition SD as Ext2 or Ext3 and create scripts on Link2SD as the same.
Hope it helped :good:
