What phone to get? - General Questions and Answers

Hello xda community!!! im due for an upgrade on Sprint and i don't know what phone I should get. I had an EVO before and loved how easy it was to root. Then I got an EVO 3D and I hate it. I'm a little scared to brick the phone to root it and I miss all the root apps I paid for. So what should i get to replace the 3D? I love HTC phones but then again that's all I've owned since the days of my Blackberry Curve. I want something easy to root. I'm confident in using commands thru cmd so it doesn't have to be a one click method so long as the bootloader is unlocked. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance for your help.

Unfortunately HTC is one of those companies which make their phones harder to root and do stuff, with that dang hboot and s-on/s-off.
Motorola has locked bootloaders but it appears they want to undo their reputation with their new bootloader unlock portal, but that currently only has the Photon Q (which is on sprint if you want a physical keyboard).
Galaxy Nexus is easy to root thanks to it being a Nexus and there's also the SGS3. They're both samsung and you said you like HTC which does happen to have good build quality. Samsung is the opposite. They love plastic

S3
I would highly reccomend the S III. The S II has been great to me and there are a ton of developers out there for these phones. Aside from that the S III has great specs!!

i suggest if you want something easy too root you should get a lg optimus. the optimus is not the most powerful phone but it literally takes less than 5 minutes to root. It is also very cheap in price.

I'd suggest the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, for me is fantastic!

Samsung Galaxy (S2/S3/Nexus) Phones or HTC phones One(X,S,XL,Sensation,Evo,Other...) the best.. Root is verry just ...

Which Sprint phone is easiest to root for a very Novice User

Can I get some advise please? First let me state I am not a very tech or software savvy person. My wife and I are finally getting a sprint smartphone ( we have the rumor and rant now ) My goal is to root the phone for 2 reasons – 1. Wifi hotspot and 2. Make the battery last longer – if that is even possible - We got an ipad and will use most of our internet experience on that device. With that being said I need some advise on which phone I should get that would at least allow me to get wifi from my phone.
The options are
My wife wants a phone with a keyboard so her options are between:
Samsung Epic™ 4G
HTC EVO Shift™ 4G
My preference is either: unless one of the phones above are better-
HTC EVO™ 4G (BLACK)
Nexus S™ 4G from Google
Wanted an evo 3d but heard that the bootloader (?) is locked and very hard to root.
Really comes down to which phones are better and more importantly which are the easiest to root to get the wifi?
Any help is GREATLY appreciated!
is not a question

You can use ODIN to flash a pre-rooted deodexed ROM with just one click. Doesn't get any easier than that. Its also super easy to flash your old phones MEID/ESN to the EPIC, if you don't want to upgrade you plan. Google my sig.

duansindo- What do you mean this is not a question? DId I phrase it wrong? Cause I meant - What phone is the best to root? 4 options - Maybe I am missing something but that is the question?
I will google your sig if that will help..... Maybe the 4 phone's I listed are all easy to root? If so that is what I need to know... How to root would be the second part but I am sooooo oout of the know on what you said about flashing ect is greek to me... very very new to this. This is my first time posting so if I am posting this in the wrong area I am sorry....
Look up how to use ODIN for the Samsung Epic 4G. Then check the Epic 4G XDA forum for the rom/tar of your choice and further instructions. Its the easiest phone to manipulate IMHO. Cellphone flashing is not discussed here so u will need to look deeper into the void for answers on that. ESN/MEID numbers are your phones identity on the network. So changing them makes your new phone show up as your old phone. Technically its cloning, but essentially its the same thing as switching SIM cards on a GSM network.

I would just wait for the new Galaxy S2 phones to come out first. The Sprint variant will be called the "Samsung Within 4G". The name makes it hard to find information about it online, so just research "Samsung Galaxy S2 for Sprint" for news about it. Its got Apple so scared they are suing their biggest parts supplier, Samsung.

prophour - Thank you that is VERY HELPFUL!!!!
It really comes down to what you want. All 4 phones can be rooted. Out of the 2 phones for you wife. Does she want a 3.6in screen or 4in screen? The Evo Shift screen is smaller then the Epic. The Epic does have a better display. Does she want HTC or Samsung. Personally I would pick HTC. I'm not a big fan of Samsung. They just don't have the product support that HTC has. Now for your phone. It's kinda the same decision. The Evo has a monster 4.3in screen. The Nexus S is no slouch though. It has a very nice 4in SAMOLED screen. The Nexus S is made by Samsung but supported by Google. Your phone pick is hard to choose from. I like both phones. I think I would choose the Nexus S. Any of the 4 would be a great phone choice.
I've rooted all those phones, the Evo is by far the easiest and noob friendly to root using Unrevoked.
See http://www.unrevoked.com/#evo
Hope that helps. I can tell you even if you do decide to wait for the EVO 3D you will most likely be much happier with that device even if it is harder to root and takes a while to learn how. It really is only a matter of time after it is released that some smart dev releases a comprehensive noob friendly guide on how to root it. I've had all those devices except the Galaxy S, my work buys me any sprint phone that I want when I want, its pretty nice. But so far I've been the happiest with the Evo and Evo shift. Evo is super easy to root and a great device! I would go with that one.

[Q] Suggest me a *Phone*

Well I wanna buy a new phone (obviously) and I want your advice.
I currently have a Samsung Wave, I gotta change it since Bada OS is a piece of crap, and I currently do NOT recommend it to everybody until Bada 2.0 is released
Things I care about :
-Android 2.3 or updatable to 2.3 | updatable to Ice Cream (optional)
-Strong sound quality through headsets
-Great camera, 5.0 or better. Flash isn't important if the night mode is great
-Speed, 1GHz processor and ability to play 3D games smoothly, I hate lags
-Popular to developers, so I can find some advices and easy to root
-Long-lasting, i'll keep the device I buy for 2 years
-Screen above 3.7", screen should be the best thing, so either SAMOLED or SLCD
-Not as expensive as Sensation and Galaxy S II, budget is $530
-Long supported, so the company won't sell me out. That automatically eliminates Motorola.
Any advice's appreciated, Thanks.
The og Samsung galaxy s or one of it variants.

What do you think of the HTC Desire S ?
How about going a itsy bitsy bit higher price and get one of the latest flagships like HTC Sensation, HTC EVO 3D, or Samsung Galaxy SII?
--- meaning: change your requirement a tiny bit ----
Edit:
Long support? I believe no company will give you long enough support, I believe only rooting and getting support from the devs in this forum is the best way
The term support, I understand it as software update support, so that you can go as far as you can with the phone.
example:
Desire with Gingerbread and Sense 3.0. These you can get only on the unofficial way done by the devs.
I have the original HTC Incredible. Very happy with HTC phones. I would buy another and likely will when the time comes.
You just described the Samsung Galaxy S GT-i9000
I had the phone for 8 months and that's a super device. No way to brick or anything, with great customizations and mods..

Haha thanks man, I guess rooting is inevitable after a while.
And I saw these two phones and they're perfect, but I can't afford them as i'm using my money for a lot of things, it'll be a bit hard so i'm asking for some cheaper phones

Thanks man. But i'm wondering is the Galaxy S still a strong device after all this time ?
The main competition now is between Samsung Galaxy S and HTC Desire S, I tried both these phones and even with that i'm confused lol. Who's better with the things that I care about ? I already know Galaxy S has a better screen but I mean besides that, and thank you all very much
Yeah, I would go with the Evo 3d. Really a great phone. But might be too pricy?
Eventually it's up to you. But have in mind that the Galaxy S was chosen as the best smartphone of 2010 and sold a bit over 10 000 000 devices globally..
If you would be buying this device and would need help about anything related just PM

[Q] What will your next device be?

Hey guys,
As we all probably know, most of us are not happy with motorola's product the XT720 and some of us are stuck with it just because we paid so much for the phone. The locked bootloader and poor support are just a few reasons to hate moto.
I'm interested in knowing what your next device would most probably be when eventually you want to move on and ditch motorola. For me it'd most likely be either a google product or something from the samsung range. Unlocked boatloaders, great support and constant updates + powerful hardware. Please enlighten me!
too early for me to say for sure as i dont have plans to get anything new anytime soon, but: 1: not motorola 2: probably either a SE device as i love how they look and they seem sincere in their support for their devices or a nexus line. all subject to change of course
In October, I can get me a new mobile (I can extend my contract). If nothing better comes in, then I will choose one of the following devices:
-Motorola Atrix
-Motorola Milestone 3
-HP Pre 3 (yeah, WebOS fascinates me )

Booo motorola . Good devices though.
While we're considering other OSs I'm intrigued by the Nokia WP7 device. WP7 actually looks very attractive, smooth and fluid - I just worry I would get bored of it after a little bit to be honest. WebOS has some nice features but I'm concerned about lack of apps and support for it and also it doesn't look as attractive as Android or WP7 to me.

next would be Samsung galaxy II or

Samsung or HTC for me. Unless moto phones will be shipped with unlocked bootloaders.

SGS2 for me.. keeping my hands off from HTC till they fix the deathgrip issue, and also their recent flip-flopping on signed bootloaders makes me think thrice..
HP Palm still pre not very stable...
Motorola Atrix? Afaik there is already speeches about it's glass e.t.c, but battery power 1960mAh..
MS3? When it will be...
For me: new nexus from google... maybe.
As i can say: NO, NO,NO to htc and moto.
Everyone else.. maybe..
My contract is also expiring next month, so I'm looking for new handset already. So, what's in my mind???
1. Motorola Atrix
Ya, most of you will said no more Motocrap. I always like Moto's hardware quality. So, if and only if they unlock the bootloader and it is possible to install custom roms like CM7, then I would take it. (There is already a leaked rom with unlocked bootloader. Everything is working except it's just not official update)
2. LG Optimus Black
This slim and shady guy is very slim and light-weighted. And truly it is a hacker's phone. Nothing is locked down. opened booloader, open NAND, now CM7 is already on the way to this phone. The problem is, LG's hardware quality is crap. And I also have doubt that this one would qualify.
3. Samsung Galaxy S II
Like it very very much. It has been a dreamed phone for me recently. But it's a bit pricy. S$348 with 2 years contract @ Starhub. Unless they give me a $200 discount voucher, I won't buy this phone.
4. Google Nexus S
If the 3 above is not applicable, this guy will be mine. No SD slot but 16Gb of NAND drive is more than enough for me. Though one this is still bugging me, no HDMI output. hmmm
guys, let me hear your suggestion. which one shall I take?
Just checked out the ATRIX. Wow, lol I want one. Its uncanny how even after the XT720 motorola continues to seduce me...haha
Well I got the XT720 because of the Xenon flash.
Not many phones out there with a Xenon.. may have to switch to another OS whilst I wait for an Android device with Xenon.
Definitely iPhone
Hey please don't kill me. Haha JK
It should be definitely next Google Nexus phone. Yes Google Nexus is win!

if you like the galaxy s2 so much, you could always cross the border and buy it there, its only RM2099 (around SGD854) compared to SGD998, or wait for the cheaper galaxy Z (Tegra2/SLCD/5mp)..
Optimus Black and Nexus S is not in the same league as Atrix and SGS2, so those should not be compared directly..

The app cataloque on WebOS has about 4600 apps at the moment including Angry Birds. So yeah, not as much as Android yet, but it's definetly a lot and it will get more once the HP Touchpad comes out later this month
And lack of support? WebOS get updates every 6 weeks or so and upgrades when an upgrade is ready (most of the time, that is).

My vote go to LG optimus 2x . Fills all your requirements
Don't get that phone too many problems. Get the galaxy nexus if on contract or wait for the new evo/htc one X or galaxy s3

I recommend the Asus Padfone, greatest versatility of any mobile device, with massive battery power and a Krait S4 core. LTE version coming later this year.
Get Samsung galaxy s 15
Get the Nexus S, pretty hackable.
you can get a nexus one off contract for $299
on contract, you can get anything
generally nexus' are more supported by the community
I'd say the new Nexus or RAZR MAXX. Both current top of the line and hackable.
The push for the MAXX is obviously the ridiculous battery life. How awesome can your phone really be if you only get 6 hours of battery life when it's finally able to do everything you want at the speed you want?
galaxy note! i love the big screen and i'm in the process of customizing it like crazy.
LG Optimus One is very cheap and perfect for overclocking (If you are into modding your phone). Without the mods and overclock the device might be a bit laggy compared to high end devices but it is still good. The phone is about 2 years old now so it is very cheap today.

Both the galaxy nexus and sgs II will stay active for a very long time but hack friendly would be galaxy nexus, can be unlock by just using 1 fastboot command and you can also lock it back as easily. Will also get OTA updates of new android version very quickly. It will most likely be my next phone, only 1 problem it does not have a sdcard slot and only 16 gb of internal space for everything..
nexus is good....

Destroyed my smartphone; what phone should I replace it with?

So, I completely blanked while at the beach and walked my Motorola Atrix into the sea. That means I'm on the hunt for a new smartphone - the dumbphone I have right now is driving me crazy. What's the best phone I can get on AT&T without spending more than 200 bucks? I don't mind buying used or refurbished phones.

Buy a second hand samsung galaxy S1. Samsung still brings out updates for these phones and works pretty fast. Or load a custom rom with ICS and your done. Maybe you can buy a S2, not sure if it is under 200.
browse second hands phones keep looking at price/performance. maybe desire S will be good for you, i have this phone and i am really happy with it
Re: Appreciate it
Thanks for all the suggestions, guys (and I kinda forgot I posted on here for a while - explains why I busted my phone). So, two things then.
First off, I'm sort of looking for something that could specifically run MIUI, CM9, has a less frustrating bootloader than the Atrix (though mine was unlocked at the time it was destroyed), and will have ICS already or in the near future. I looked on the Gazelle eBay store and they had some stuff that looked decent but not awesome.
On a different note, I'm open to getting a WP7 phone that can dual boot Android. Is the HTC HD2 the only phone that can do that? I'd be okay with the HD2, but I'm pretty sure it would only run 2G after unlocking it on AT&T's network.
Buy a htc incredible s or samsung galaxy 2 or 3 but make sure u get something that suits ur needs, maybe write down a check list of things u want out of a phone and find one that way. All the best

I went from an Atrix to a Samsung Galaxy note and now every other phone out there just looks too small. I thought the note looked huge when I first got it but now it just seems normal. Never going back to a small phone!
Probably going to get this...
After a bit of research, I've decided that I'll probably just get the Motorola Photon and unlock it. It seems like the best alternative to the Atrix. My main complaints were not enough work on CM7/9 and MIUI, both of which the Photon has. And the bootloader and root are pretty easy to unlock, too. Are there any other comparable alternatives?

HTC Sensation XE is a brilliant phone. It has ics, beats audio and vibrant custom rom forums. It is cheaper than a one x and better value IMHO.If you must have a Motorola then the Photon is okay, not much of an upgrade though.
