[QUESTION]About ANDROID ROMS - General Questions and Answers

This keeps bugging my mind .
I keep on seeing different awesome roms here but doesnt seem to be able to apply them to my phone .
in other words , can i apply a custom rom to my phone that is significantly for other phones ?
Example : (Only an example)
I will apply a Custom Rom For Galaxy Y on my HTC Wildfire Buzz
IS IT POSSIBLE ?

I can't believe someone would even ask this question...NEVER FLASH ANYTHING THAT ISNT FOR YOUR DEVICE

Smarter to ask a stupid question and avoid the headache later.
As stated above the ROM needs to be specifically for your device. In some cases, and ALWAYS READ THE INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS, you will also need to be running a specific version of your current ROM.

[Q] MIUI , what if ...

Hi guys
I would appreciate if someone [dev] can give me some answers on this ...
Now that we have full CWM , thanks to the devs [@gtg465x]
How about following instructions to flash lastest MIUI for Galaxy S I9000 , using the actual installation guide > http://j.mp/iZSjlh , and try this ROM on the Infuse
Is the Galaxy S I9000 the closest phone [specs] we can have to try this ?
Some step(s) in that guide to be replaced or skipped ?
Worth to try it?
Would it work ?
Would I brick the phone?
I if brick it , would I still be able to un-brick using ODIN [back to factory]
TIA

Would be very interested in this as well, but not enough to try bricking my phone .
I wouldn't try it.
Just because the partition layout of the original Galaxy S is the same as our device, it does not mean the kernel is compatible.
The current roms are all based on the stock kernel and do not change any of the core of how the device works. We still have TouchWiz built in and won't be changing that until we have custom kernel built and working on this device.
On the other hand, we can flash back to stock with Odin, so you won't completely fubar your phone if you try.

Your right about kernel compatibility , so 1st step not using speedmod kernel [used @ guide]
But I would like to know if the native MIUI kernel used @ the galaxy S is like a "modded kernel" they used to port that rom .. or if its a kind of "universal kernel" ?? . I dont know if Im making myself clear

If the partition layout changes, cannot promise Odin will fix it. Pit, boot.bin and sbl.bin pulled from a phone to flash will most likely cause a hard brick. We need a leaked one-click, or some very crazy testers willing to brick phones left and right to test that. I don't recommend it.

Not a problem. When a new phone comes out....here's what happens:
1. Root
2. SBF/ODIN
3. CWM recovery
4. Psuedo ROMs based on stock.
5. Source Code drops.
6. Custom kernels (w/CWM built in)
7. Ports for MIUI/CM7/Sense/etc.
In 3 weeks, the community as a whole has completely done steps 1-5. (Usually takes a couple of months).
Next big focus has to be custom kernels. I helped out with some of the initial stuff for CM7 on Captivate before I bought an Atrix, then the Infuse. I'm going to be doing alot of reading and trying to learn alot more about git. Then I will be able to look into kernels. Team Whiskey had some guys working on a kernel with CWM + VooDoo lagfix written up...but I havent heard anything in a few days. So....be patient, its coming! .

Very interesting info , thanks for sharing , didn't know the order of these steps to follow ..
We are closer then ! cool , cant wait to run MIUI @ Infuse
Like others said, we will need a custom kernel for MIUI. However, the Infuse is very similar to the original Galaxy S. I bet it would be really easy to port 2.2.1 Galaxy S ROMs. They would probably boot right up and work fine if you just remove the kernel from them and swap out a few files (ril, camera libs, key layouts).

Hey I have one theme in mind, can you give me the details of these files?
(Wait do themes even mess with these files?)
Key layouts I got...
Camera libs? where are those located?
ril? what is that and where?
Thanks much appreciated.

I'm used to HTC devices so I can't tell you the exact names of the ril and camera libs on a Samsung device without looking, but they will be in /system/lib. You may also have to swap a few files in /system/etc. Just takes research and then trial and error. I suggest grabbing a GS 2.2.1 ROM, removing the kernal (and modem if that's included) (will have to remove corresponding parts of updater-script as well), and then flashing. Adb logcat will help you to debug and fix issues from there.
Hell id donate an InFuSe to a miui dev that would make it happen!

Once we get kernel source and a working CM7 build for it, my team is able to port MIUI to it
Well... once we get a device that is
We have been looking for a new device to port MIUI to. If there is enough demand for the Infuse 4G we'll pick one up.
If you guys manage to get it ported we'll create a device forum for you and host your roms, etc. If you need porting help/advice, or just want to talk about MIUI, join our IRC channel #miui-us on Freenode (details in my signature) and look for someone with a + in front of their name (those are the developers).
Anyway, hope to see you guys running MIUI soon!
Now this is what im talking about. If you guys have stuff to test ill snag it up and try it. Cant write but I can install it and test for ya. Not really scared to brick it. Plus its insured. Anyway good luck cant wait for it!!!

Are there any good guides/articles to learning how to create custom roms and whatnot?
I'm a software developer and while I've never done anything related to kernals/operating systems normally I'm able to pick up stuff quick and I think learning about stuff like this for Android phones would be awesome. I just really have no idea where to start at.

Would you or one of the other devs be willing to post an intro guide or something in order to help get more developers here?
I know you guys are probably busy working on your roms as well as work/school/doing other things, but it probably wouldn't take too long to make a short intro to help us get started. That way we could hopefully get some more devs around here.
I've been reading others guides and posts about it and I could probably do at least a little work from the start based on what they say is involved in making a rom, but the biggest problem for me is not knowing how to get going. It seems like you need an android kitchen to do a lot of the work but all of the kitchens look like they are phone specific so I don't want to try using one if those on the infuse. Maybe they aren't, but info like that to help us get our feet wet would be extremely helpful.

Yes. ROMs increase your battery life due to custom kernels being undervolted blah blah blah [there are 10 other threads about why rooting is beneficial.. im not going to paraphrase all of it. if you want to know, search for it]
Just do it. There are no bricks of a Nexus S unless you're using Odin and flashing things not for your phone. I'd stay away from Odin if you don't know what you're doing. Nexus S is easy to root/modify/play with.
It would be pretty cool to see themes on stock. just saying.

I would say go ahead and root as to be ready for when they finally get around to developing the custom roms. And it also helps in reducing battery discharge.

Well the dev that made gasmod broke his attain so that will pretty much remain unfinished. All in all the attain is pretty much dead in terms of development activity and without a CWM recovery there's not much that can be be done. So don't hope for a custom rom lol. Even one member on the androidforums said he was gonna build a rom but that never saw the light of day. If you're familiar with theming then you can Atleast theme your attain to how you want it and add a few tweaks to the build.prop but that's about it.

Yes, but in the long run it's going to be better to have all that ISH set up anyway .
Just a question and please dont take it the wrong way, but how does one plan on working on deving/porting miui or anything for that matter without the sdk/adb? I feel it is VERY important to have adb setup.

There's no need to use the unlock bootloader thing from htc, Indirect (over in the dev section) has a root method for 2.3.4 (if you choose to update to 2.3.4 anyway) that doesnt involve using the unlock tools

Well if your taking it to Sprint. Upgrading it to 2.3.4 is probably one of the first things they'll do. Before they even trouble shoot it . if you end up keeping the device, and they upgrade it. you can use the method suggested above. The link is below.

Even i m thinking the same. Sense UI is something different from others. Great transitions and what a nice widgets it have.. But let wait if any intersted dev would say yes for this..

Sense UI is definitely very great. But it is a huge beast having a lot of custom modifications to the core system. Extremely hard to port. Even Sense4All project has many issues.

Exactly. The matter which complicates things even more is that no Samsung and HTC devices share a chipset, making it impossible to find a common denominator so to say

If I helped you, please hit the thanks button!
Sense UI is really something.. We all know that.. Even i would love to see it in our SGR.. If the developers are interested, i think we can conduct a poll question for this topic.. What do u say guys?
Poll for what my friend? Just read Adam's post. This is a hell lot of work. We might as well port the S2 Official JB ROM before we are even half way through this. As it is Adam has his hands filled with CM, Karthik is resuming AOSP soon, Grarak has multiple ROM's and so has MJ. I suggest we focus on getting stable ROM's rather than a myriad of unstable/unusable ones. Just imagine, all that work and what you get in the end is a Sense Look Alike, half stable that a FEW people MAY/WOULD like to try. Not a good deal I feel.
So d point is we wont get sense

Sense doesnt make sense
No offence to anyone but personally i do not like sense. Hell ! even my friends with htc dont like it cuz it eats resources and battery! Id take CM10 or 10.1 over sense anyday . If we are talking about launchers , I feel the need for a customized version of trebuchet in which there is an option for rearranging icons and making folders in the menu.

I wanted to know this.
As said "Porting official JB of SGS2"
Will that be like an official JB to our phone without samsungs permission?
As in can we make it something without using root access or anything?
I am very desperate to get official JB because i am scared of using ROMs.
I have tried them all (PAC, CAMP, SLIM, CM10.1) but then the root and custom mods which voids the warranty makes me feel insecured.
Because what if my charging jack died on me and im not able to revert to the stock rom. Has happened once. So...

U simply cannot port it from SGS2 bro.. Our SGR h/w is entirely different from SGS2.. It aint possible for us to port from other devices.. If we have to port jelly bean, then Samsung have to release a source for us or build jelly bean for us which is highly unlikely..

Wait.
I messed it all up.
Mj, samsung has a problem with anything custom than root access right?
As in samsung voids warranty if we use anything CUSTOM, be it rooted or unrooted?
[QUERY] Is there any device having h/w exactly matching to our SGR?

Nope, there's no anything like a twin brother, unfortunatelly. Even LG Optimus 2x differs a lot.

I wouldnt have been so stupid had i studied android/linux.
Finance people you see..
But still i am like..
Why cant we modify stock s2 jb rom or any other stock jb rom and make it compatible with our device.
Tell me why because i dont know anything about porting.
Okay agreed at a point that hardware does not match..it is completely different..
But cant those things be edited so as to make compatible?

Nobody said its impossible. Its just super-difficult. We cannot port official JB for approx the same reason why we couldn't port the official ICS. Samsung implements a completely different set of framework and libraries for each of its devices depending on what its hardware is. If you wanted to port an official Samsung ROM you would have to re-write most of these framework and library files which are hardware dependent, which eventually culminates into a mountain of work. Sound Good?

This is THE BEST EXPLAINATION i could ever get.
So like if 10 or more devs work together on a particular stock rom..then only we can have it all?
Then another question is why would any dev waste time on stock roms when they can make better roms
Bdw it sounds tough..doing must be tougher.
