OTA update files on SamMobile - Samsung Galaxy R i9103

Hi!
There are new section on sammobile where I saw 7 new OTA files for GT-i9103, all of them from 2012 August.
I downloaded Spain (Yoigo) and Germany files, both of them are .bin files and 253Mb size.
Now I think we need some help to see if they are valid for us or our devs. I tried to rename them to .zip, but zip can't recognize them. Kies for windows doesn't download updates on .bin files too, so I don't know if we could do something with those bin files.
Partial screenshot of the page (it's under firmware last files)
This link must be valid for checking latest firmwares for GT-I9103. And this is the link to the latest Germany OTA file update.
W A R N I N G
- These are NOT flashable files in any way (nor odin, nor kies, nor cwm)
- These are NOT tested files, you could brick your phone
- As you could read here, SamMobile explained (but talking about other model) these bin files must be repackaged and signed to be flashable, but in any case, they will increase your binary counter, because they are PRE-RELEASE
Until having some more information, please, don't try anything with them.

Yesterday, SamMobile published a new note on their news telling:
We of SamMobile will update our firmware page with OTA files.
Thanks to these OTA files you are able to test the upcoming OTA updates by Samsung a couple of days early.
This is great news for example for developers
Please do not use any kind of information if you are not a developer or you do not know how to use this on your phone!
We of SamMobile still want to advice you to use Samsung KIES or OTA itself by Samsung.
Flashing firmwares or using OTA-Updates isn’t that easy.
When you use this kind of stuff everything is of course on your own risk.
Please take care do not use it when you don’t need it!

This post were deleted from their server , but google and google reader still remember it
The only reference I found about OTA update files on XDA was this post talking about how to extract/capture .bin ota update file on a Galaxy Tab Plus, basically doing software update from the settings menu, not rebooting after question, searching on the phone database and finding an url address where the phone will could download the .bin file from a cloud server, but nothing about what could we do with it.

I think its the real deal! Time to start downloading guys! :good::fingers-crossed:

But, what the hell could we do with those .bin files? knitting?

Are u sure its a bin file? bin files are mostly modem or baseband files flashable through ODIN. Maybe a dev can take a look!

Not, it's not a "bin file", it's a ".bin file" (take a look at the dot on the start, it's a "GT-I9103_DBT_265620723.bin" file (the thermany one, for example).
It's not a .tar or .md5 file.
The content seems to be binary code too, I find no references on it.

This stuff belong to general not dev section.
Only post in dev section when u r releasing something which is developed by u, or u wanna discuss something about dev work.

I don't think so. I'm pretty sure this is relevant information for developers, probably less valid for me. I wish this could be an open post for them to discuss about if those .bin files could be valid for their work.
Probably, we could have different points of view, so you could move the post to General section or delete it, or maybe ask to a mod for doing it. It's not my problem at all, I'm just happy trying to contribute. :good:

No buddy, as xlm13x & MJ said. it Must be in general section. want to know why..??
1) You haven't created or developed anything in this Thread so that it mustn't be in Dev Section.:victory:
2) In General section, downloading can be done by Devs & after using of your thread they can do what they are capable of. so this thread must be there.
3) Dev section is for MODs and R&D (research & development) Like thing. So, in Brief ask Justin to move this thread in General.
Be cool & flow with the air.

Ok, I understand now. For me there is no problem. I'm sure you could understand my primary desire was to make this information quickly reachable for devs, because I think they are who could help us with those files, and sure they don't visit General section with the same frequency
Ok, so if Justin is over there, I agree to move the post to General.

You cannot flash it buddy! OTA updates are special bin files. Here is what sammobile did with a similar OTA update for S3 users to convert it into a ODIN flashable package:
AT SamMobile we don’t provide OTA update files as they require the user to be on a specific firmware, so many people are not able to use these update files.
We really wanted to give you guys a taste of this firmware but were unable to as it was only available as an OTA Update. So, what we did was that we applied the OTA update on our own device(HOW?)and dumped the firmware. Then we repackaged the firmware as any other usual ODIN firmware, now we have a full ODIN I9300XXDLH4 firmware which any one can flash on their Samsung Galaxy S III GT-I9300 no matter on which firmware or carrier they are on.
This is a PRE-RELEASE version so not official from KIES.
We want to give you BIG warnings if you want to test this firmware.
This is a PRE-RELEASE firmware so it will increase your binary counter!
You will lose your warranty so please do not try this when you are not 100% sure!
“As this is a PRE-RELEASE firmware so expect some minor bugs”

Great Find Buddy. Ya these are .bin files captured from OTA updates. These can't be flashed via any means. It has to be converted to tar or md5 format for flashing via Odin. Even after conversion, it has to be signed. Only then it can be used for flashing. Could be please tel me the name of the two .bin files that has been released?

Here you go!

First of all, thank you for your hard work and time!
I'm just wondering if anything needs to be clicked on when the phone is set on Download Mode?
I have everything setup in Odin but I only get a msg saying:
"<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 0)"
No activity on the phone. The instructions are clear and I did read them 5 times over , just wondering if anything else needs to be done in Odin.
Thanks again!
Whoo Hoo! So jazzed! I was getting impatient with the dev support for the t769 and was going to return it and hold out for the HTC One S.
Now, with Root and CWM, I might just keep this thing. I have a feeling that XDA will make a section for us and ROM dev will be around the corner!

Just want to make sure I'm understanding this correctly. The process described above will give root access while keeping the stock ROM that came with the phone, right? Upgrading to ICS through the installation of new ROMs is a separate process? Thanks for all the work on this!
Just FYI, when you click to upload the PIT, "Re-Partition" will auto select itself again. scared the crap out of me.

The added information the users, that is to discuss firmwares, especially for the future. Someone may ask about something of a firmware, as JB, and another can help.

When i updated my phone to latest DDLJ1 through ota i got a minor problem , but for some others it might not be a problem. So the problem is- i can't scroll continuously in a list, i mean when i start scrolling in a list ,say in music player then i scroll again( when the list is still moving) then the list stops. This was not the case with previous version.
If someone don't get this i have given details below.
Start scrolling a list and while it is moving scroll again, the it should keep on moving. But for me when i scroll a scrolling list it stops.
I hope i make myself clear.

I do not understand a single thing that you're so worried for the championship? You've put it out to the public without protection. Apk could do with this command and would have earned by selling for a nominal fee, but now everyone knows it already ...

I agree with you, but if I wanted to make money from it I would not have released the solution public and open, but I do feel credits should be given.
So, would you like to know the answer to the question I asked you, what 0x12345676 in location 0x1002080C does?

location 0x1002080C is s5p_restart_handler INFORM3 aka reboot_mode
reboot fota_bl sets MAGIC 0x12345676
when mach_board_main is executed in sboot and location 0x1002080C has 0x12345676 then it will execute pit_update_bootloader_ota, all pretty simple really.
There is also another special mode of reboot sud which sets s5p_restart_handler to 0xABCF0000 but to discuss its function would be off topic here.

OK, what happens if, at the command reboot fota_bl, the partition BOOTA1 will be filled with zeros or different words empty?

[S-OFF] DirtyRacun S-OFF - HTC Butterfly J KDDI (Deluxe_j) - HBOOT 1.39 ONLY!

Please see our Website for Instructions and Downloads:
http://unlimited.io
We have released the Racuns!
Support:
Update regarding Windows versions of our tools:
Team Unlimited has decided to drop all support for the Windows OS. This is due to massive amounts of trolling on forums and in our support channel as well as flamming us for our decision to not support Windows 8 or any version of Windows 64bit.
We attempted to explain to anyone who had questions why this was not supported - drivers are unreliable, percentage of risk for bricking was too high, and just general complications - but we were greeted with people who demanded support and others that came into our support # to tell us that "clearly we didn't test 64bit because it works" and "wanted to let us know that we could support 64bit."
We want to make it clear that we make these tools with our free time, for free, for you - our users. We made a decision to provide clear and concise directions and a live support channel. We can revoke all or part of this at any time and will should people become abusive to our team members.
To receive realtime support for S-OFF please visit our IRC channel If you do not have an IRC client you can use this link.
If you need help we highly suggest coming to our IRC #, we do not monitor this thread as much as we keep an eye on our IRC #. If you run into an error you will need to come to # for quick response and help - quick response may save your device!
Using how-to guides, "kits" and using other instructions on XDA to S-OFF your device is not recommended and will not be supported by Team Unlimited. If you want the best experience and results - go direct to the source. Dealing with support issues through the forums is inefficient and posts may get lost in long support threads, of which we would have too many to actively monitor. We have therefore decided that all support should be through our IRC channel. This will allow us to help you in real-time and through the whole process.

Currently no, bear in mind that the Japan version of this phone was released before all other markets and we have not yet had time to examine any of the international variants.
Nice! Thank you, for helping me get s-off while in testing.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2073430
edit i'm no dev and others now say it's fake
edit It's gotta be an old ruu i'm on hboot 1.40 and that one on the site(i'm guessing from the ruu) is 1.17, no luck
I think I've aquired the leaked ruu for asia wwe x920d, currently downloading will post in 46min if all goes well (got it on tw site, but they are having error with cid)(they think they need to super cid to use it) and it has a zip extention, but looks the right size and name
Here is the asia wwe ruu renamed as as zip (I believe) Hope this helps
pulled link bc of dropbox traffic pm me in 3 days if you need it guys/gals
edit here is that guys fix i checked the md5 sum, it matched, used zip 2 fix to fix corruption. He said he used the file successfully by renaming the .zip file to PL99IMG.zip and relocking his bootloader and copying to sd and rebooting here is the fixed .zip
pulled link bc of dropbox traffic pm me in 3 days if you need it guys/gals
(if you are not a member of the s-off unlimited io team please do not dl would like them to receive this)
also here are two update files for asia/tw x920d (both contain hboot.img files in firmware.zip in these zip files) :fingers-crossed:
first is older but run in sequence of updating
pulled link bc of dropbox traffic pm me in 3 days if you need it guys/gals
2nd is latest ota I think
pulled link bc of dropbox traffic pm me in 3 days if you need it guys/gals

Hardware wise those phones are identical.
Tool added in the first post, hope someone can confirm it signs with samsung signature.
What language is that? Maybe you should put this thread in the developers section so they can have a look at that.
update*
Well the file shows up as a virus, with my antivirus and it got quickly discarded.

I think this has something to do with the encoding of the file, I might have a go when I get home and have a look on a VM to see if it legit.

Actually this program have been available for a long time! Me personally come across it in a ZIP file containing ODIN and some other tools nearly two weeks ago but it is in Korean so I couldn't understand what it was although I suspected it is a PIT editor.

so if this tool could really sign pit files with samsung signature, then any m919 owner could flash a GE pit file and then flash everything (bootloader, modem, etc) with no problem? We could finally have a total GE conversion? (at least for us m919 owners)

Well done, and I thanked you, because you actually did help.
It looks no addition signature data at the end of file.
I tried to open a pit file, edit it and then save it, no signature data found.
