Has anyone successfully installed Google Now on their rooted Skyrocket. I rooted my phone today just for this purpose and its been a no go. I have tried what some of the threads have explained but no luck. I sure would like to be able to do this. Although im a noob im not afraid to try things. Any help would be appreciated.
Mike
Here the thread I followed to get it working, but eventually I just went to CM10.

I tried that method but is said i didnt have enough memory and I didnt know what was safe to delete. Im thinking about
cm10 also. I put it on my old captivate and its sweet. I cant use it for calls because of the sim card but otherwise its smooth! What are you finding in the way of bugs?

Use the Mikey V7 one. I'm not sure what the procedure you followed is but if you get the velvet m7 apk from that post, you simply replace the Google quick search apk with the one provided. Be sure to backup your current apk first.
I believe it's located in system/app, but obviously find the exact instructions first, just pointing you in the direction. There's a Google now thread here in the SR section. I believe the apk linked there is outdated but the instructions are correct. Be sure to adjust permissions to match the original Google quick search.

How do I do this. When I go to storage it tells me I have 9.32 GB of free space but when I try to install the apk it tell me I only have 19 MB of free space
Before doing anything, you need to make sure you have at least 60MB of free space on your /system partition for Offline/Online files and 30MB of free /system space for Online Only files.
You'll have to delete some system apps or move them to sd to make room
OR
or you could use Sean's skyics. Google now is pretty much flawless on it, and it's a great rom. Much easier route imo

So, over the weekend I flashed Tab2Lite and I'm loving the result. However, I would like to add back one or two of the apps that Metallice removed in the de-bloating process. I have my original nandroid backups as well as his RemovedApps.zip but I'm not quite sure where to start. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

If you look at the tab2lite thread it explains how to re-add some of the apps and has a link to all of them for download.
I've read through the thread several times, I tend to read such things instead of jumping in blind . In the past I've either run full-custom as-is or full-stock so this is my first attempt at customizing a custom ROM. I know I can drop the apk back into /data/app or /system/app (and did, in fact, for a quick fix) but I would rather like to know how to put the bloat back into the ROM so that if I reflash later I will have all the fiddly bits I want. So, I guess, the question is really more along the lines of "how do I customize and repackage a custom ROM" but I didn't want to be quite so generic with the original question.

Ah. Well that's easier than I was expecting
I know I know... There are a lot of things I am good with... android...is new for me.
I have a galaxy note and I dont know the first thing about .apk files or rooting, etc.... I dont mind the way it works now... BUT
I want S Voice. (duh)
as you can see from my sig... Its be A WHILE since I have hacked/modded phones. Then I went to the iPhone for a few models and now I am back...
I downloaded "apkinstaller" and "appinstaller" but niether will load the apk I got off of xda.
I loaded the .apk to my external sd and made enables the ability to load apps that arent from the android market.
Do I need to delete something? Or what... I really need someone to give me a "step by step, you're an idiot" way of getting this done. I really dont want to root my phone if I dont have to.
Thanks to anyone who helps!
you shouldnt need to root to install apk's as long as you have checked off ability to install apps that arent from market. I have been doing that from my dropbox since my phone was stock everything. Maybe the apk is broken. Try downloading it again. Maybe even try downloading another apk just to test if it installs properly.
I will try that now.

actually I dont think that S Voice is an apk. From what I read quickly is that it needs to be flashed via CWM. Which is a bit more complicated than installing an apk.

I dont really have the time to read up on all of it but from what I have you may need to be rooted and remove voice talk first. I think a few of the custom ROMS also have S Voice installed on them already. This is a trickier apk than usual. Would be great if someone with more experience on S Voice would jump in and show you the steps. Sorry I couldnt be of more help.

not sure if this needs to be pushed to system/app rather than installed?
if it won't install I'm sure you'll need to be rooted.

say what? (told you I am a newb)
it is, in this state (unrooted), impossible to get it working.
You need to have root-acces (which you stated you don't have), because you have to replace the usual voice talk with the S-voice application.
You can of course root your phone, read up, and install the mod.
OMG you're such a NOOB! Kidding, just kidding. Well no actually, but that's just how it is

Greetings
I'm new to this and I'm trying to root my skyrocket in order to uninstall some apps from my phone like NFS and other at&t apps and I read in order to do that I need to root my phone. I read some tutorials about how to root my phone but they are for version 2.3.6 and I'm running version 4.0.4 . So my question is can I use the same files or is there one for the version I have. And my other question is how I uninstall the apps I don't want after rooting. And I also saw something called super user which u can download after rooting from the market app. Can someone please tell me what is the use for that. Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for the reply. I went through this sticky before but it did not answer my questions. I'm trying to find out what us the best method to root my galaxy skyrocket for version 4.0.4. Not 2.3.6. Now if that doesn't matter please confirm. Also I didn't see on the link you put where it tells you how to delete the apps after rooting.
Thanks in advance for real help
There really is no best sense it is. Subjective plus rooting for 2.3.6 works the same. As for deleting apps i use titanium backup though u might want to freeze apps instead of deleting them. Just my opinion on that though

So you are saying I can use the same usb software and zip file to root my phone. Just want to make sure that what you meant. I tried to search for root 4.0.4 but didn't find any straight forward toturial.
And thanks for the tip regarding titanium.
If ur using odin yes there are other methods but they should still translate over. My advice before u try it look on youtube for step by step instructions (just search for how to root skyrocket) also use google search there are some nice websites out there for our phone plus google search picks up xda better than there own search does. If you don't want to brick your phone do as much reading and watching how to videos as u can. I read as much as i could for about a week before i rooted but i was also looking at roms

The sticky IS straightforward! All you do is flash cwm in Odin, and then flash the su files in cwm. Titanium backup is used for uninstalling bloat as well as backing up apps+data for when you switch roms. In ics you can freeze apps without root so TiBu (titanium backup) isn't as necessary for uninstalling bloat as it used to. Also, most custom roms are very debloated any way. Upon rooting superuser will automattically be an app on your phone. SuperSu is used to replace it in some roms (some prefer it). Read, Read, oh and btw READ! The sticky was created to prevent meaningless threads such as this. Some take the time, read it and if they actually have real questions then they ask. You are not one of those people.
I wasn't going to answer any of your questions and simply flame you, but I thought I would be nice this time and answer your questions. The long weekend saved you

Very true, not going to complain too much and all I had to do was drop a few files. I renamed all the other folders/files it was supposed to overwrite so all is good, didn't need to take a nandroid or anything. Pretty nifty feature to have and takes stock rooted one step closer to JB.

EDIT: Google Now is located under just Google
Samsung Infuse 4g, rooted using Odin, running CNA_Aries_3.6.6_Signed_Th3Bill custom ROM. All bloatware was removed from phone, just as I wanted. However, there was no Google Play icon on the phone with the new ROM. Is it possible to get this icon/app back while using this ROM? If so, how? I need to be able to install all the cool root-only apps that I paid for/downloaded. (If someone knows another way to download apps from the internet into this phone, I'm all ears.) I either want the Google Play capability back, or.....
If it is NOT possible, can anyone suggest an easy-to-install-ROM that is UBER-stable, for rooted phones, not teen-or-20something-based, "different" looking, is at least 4.1.1 or above, and has the expected features (Google Play capability, I can use my own sounds/mp3s as notifications/ringtones, I can transfer my contact list via Bluetooth, etc.)? I Really liked the CyanogenMod that I had with my old, rooted Huawei 8652 At&t "go"phone, but the version was 3.6.2.

Alex, I went to the link you indicated. I'm an old guy. Can you suggest a "primer", or Dummies Guide to understanding some of the terminology that they were using on that thread (board, forum, etc. ?)? I don't want to become an expert, or developer. I just want to be able to follow along with the conversations and do my own thing.
I rooted my first phone less than 50 days ago, and if the procedure hadn't been (and gratefully so) laid out in step-by-step, dang near goof-proof instructions, I'd be the annoyed owner of a nice, quiet paperweight.
After I rooted the first phone, I then downloaded the custom ROM, saved the zip file onto the SD card, booted it in Recovery mode, wiped all the caches the instructions said to, then had the phone install the zip file. Voila'. Done. I've never heard of GAPPS. (I thought someone was misspelling the clothing store for teenagers. Lolol) Is "flashing" the act of having the phone install from SD card? In installing a new ROM, would I flash any necessary GAPPS the same way? I'm not expecting nor asking you to type out the war-and-peace-length primer I need. I'd be tickled to the point of constipation, however, if you could simply point me in its general direction.
