Installed Jelly Bean Want To Go Back To ICS - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I rooted & installed CWM via the one-click method. It installs Rogue XM Recovery 1.3.0.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1689193
I backed everything up in CWM so that when & if I flashed back everything would be backed up. So I flashed Jelly Bean
[ROM][JB][4.1.1] AOSP build #4 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1779133
I played around with & didn't see what the big deal was with Jelly Bean was. Also was irritated that there was no file explore built into the ROM. I really like the one on Asus ICS ROM. Anyway I go back into recovery to install the stock Asus ICS ROM (US_epaduser9_2_1_27UpdateLauncher.zip). It tries but aborts
Finding update package...
Opening update package ...
Installing update...
Installation aborted.
What am i missing or doing wrong?

Well for starters the only reason the stock ICS roms have a file explorer is because its an Asus proprietary app, every custom ICS, or JB rom will require you to download one. Secondly are you trying to re-flash the stock rom or restore your back up? Id recommend you try using TWRP

I think i seen this before you are trying to flash an update to a rom not that actual rom......check the file size. I haven't had any issue converting Jb back to ICS. you have to flash a fresh install of the version you backed up then you can flash the back up you made. The mounting from ICS to JB is different and you cannot go backwards without flahsing a clean rom first.

I downloaded the newest firmware straight from the Asus website. That is what I am trying to flash but it fails to. If I should be doing something else then please tell me.

Did you unzip the download and flash the zip that is inside? For some reason Asus packages a zip within a zip. You need the one on the inside to flash.

I feel like such a moron because that was the issue. I found the .24 firmware that I had extracted to a folder with the need zip file in side. I was able to flash t e.24 with out an issue. I knew my issue was something stupid but I could put my finger on it right away.

You might want to go back to the ASUS site and download the newer firmware(.27) and do the same thing(install the zip inside the zip) That's the newest Official ASUS Firmware.

[Q] Restore stock kernel and unroot?

All - There is absolutely nothing wrong with my TF101 but I am getting annoyed at the Asus Update notices and wanted to know if there was a way to go back to a stock kernel and then un-root for the update before re-rooting and switching back to a custom kernel. All without loosing my data/config/etc.
I have seen how to un-root but not restore a stock kernel.
I assume it is possible and I am simply trying to walk a thin line that no one else cares to do!
Thanks if you can help and if my search skills failed me I apologize.
use titanium backup, freeze the app DMClient, no more update
Thanks - that is one solution to try.
That stopped the update notice - but as I fall farther and farther behind on versions (8.6.5.6) the OC and CWM are not really worth it, or more specifically I do not want to have to rebuild my install after a full flash/wipe.
Amy idea's?
Thanks
So what configuration do you want to have in the end? Latest firmware, rooted, with a custom kernel? and no more update notifications?
I suppose there are a few ways to go about this:
1) download the stock 8.6.5.13 firmware from the asus website and use that to upgrade. It will also flash the stock kernel. You can wait for the OTA and afterwards, re-root and apply a custom kernel. You might have to flash the stock recovery to get the update to flash or you can use adb and CWM to get it to flash.
2) my favorite- download the 8.6.5.13 firmware and the OTA and repackage them into a rooted rom. It's like a new rom and a puzzle all in one. You can even add a custom kernel to get everything in one shot.
Both of these should keep your data partition intact.
The fine line is more like a limbo - you have to either choose to revert to stock every time you want to upgrade and hope that the update doesn't fail. Or, you can take advantage of root privileges so that you can load custom roms, even if they are just rooted versions of the stock firmware.

Sounds like a plan - tips or source for the too dumb to fail instructions?
Thanks!
Download the 8.6.5.13 firmware from ASUS. Choose android/firmware and download the country specific firmware for 8.6.5.13 (or latest firmware)
Unzip it and it will be an ASUS folder with some goodies inside. Copy the whole folder onto your externel sdcard. Insert the sdcard into your TF and it should recognize the update. Apply it and you'll have stock 8.6.5.13. Check for updates and apply it. Re-root and update you kernel and you should be good to go.

Im just wondering; will this method work with a custom rom? I currently have a Modaco custom ROM, but this is based on .9 firmware.
Im happy to resort to the method above if it will let me progress to the latest firmware (which i can then re-root afterwards) but keep my data intact.
Thanks for your advice.
I don't know if the custom rom will recognize the firmware. If it does, it should work.
As far as rolling your own, I'm not sure there are any step by step instructions from start to finish. You'll need to know how to:
1) root a rom (adding su and Superuser.apk)
2) package a flashable zip file (including updating the updater-script)
3) manipulate a rom to add/remove things like kernels, system firmware, etc.
4) pack/unpack boot and other android! magic files
5) pack/unpack blob files
6) (optional) deodex a rom

OK - sounds like my desire exceeded my ability by many a mile.
Thanks for the other suggestion - I think that plus Titanium Backup and a little bit of time should do it.

Getting back 8.6.5.21 after root attempt

Is it possible to get my hands on a stock 8.6.5.21 after trying to root with Razorclaw? This root involved using a 8.6.6.19 fw, but not it's slow as... :S
I'd rather not lose my data, if possible.
Cheers!
Hey if your ClockworkMod is working fine then download the 8.6.5.21 from the main Asus website nd put it on your external sd and go into clockwork recovery then go into install zip and install it
Thanks! Now I need to install clockworkmod
I had a similiar question, are the updates available from the ASUS website full ROM's or incrimental updates to the prevoiusly released FOTA versions?
Can they all be flashed via CWM to over-write an existing ROM? Regardless of the current version of the firmware on the phone(assuming a data/cache wipe to be safe)?
Do they overwrite the recovery partition or do you need a copy of the asus recovery to flash back to stock recovery?

There is an app called RecoveryInstaller.apk ~~ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346180 ... IF YOU ARE ROOTED, then you can use this app and it'll install Clockworkmod for you.

The ASUS website ROM's are full ROM's. You can flash the stock ROM with the clockworkmod, however you won't be able to update unless you flash back to stock Clockwork. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154947 click that link to download the stock clockwork.

Question about CWM before ICS update

I just rooted my TF101 using ViperMod but now I'm not sure whether I should install CWM recovery or not if I want to install further OTAs. I have read some threads but couldn't come up with a clear answer. I read somewhere that only stock recovery can receive OTA updates but also read that CWM can receive them too. If I can't install CWM then what ROMs can I install with stock recovery? What's the best way to go if I want to be ready for the ICS? Thanks!!

Technically you'll still receive the OTA update you just can't apply it if you have CWM or a custom ROM installed.
You can't install custom ROM without CWM (if you have an older SBK tablet you can use NVFlash with a compatible ROM).
So I shouldn't install cwm until the ICS drops right?

If you want to update to ICS via OTA don't instal CWM.
As you have been told, you will get the OTA message but the update will fail.
So you have two choices (or three):
* Keep stock recovery and update to ICS when the OTA update is available
* Install CWM and update to ICS as soon as a DEV publishes an ICS ROM
* Install CWM and remove it as soon as you know the OTA is due (pretty lame, but you could do it).
Regards.

I have a question about removing CWR. Actually 2.
1. Can't we just uninstall and wipe data with Titanium since it was installed as an .apk- from Gnufabio? (pretty sure this won't work but thought I would throw it out there anyways). Where is the recovery located on a tablet (what folders) Same as in phones?
2. Can we just flash the stock recovery by itself and not reset back to .13 or younger? If I am running stock ROM, it seems that I should be able to just reflash the stock recovery and replace it w/o changing the ROM or factory reset.
I have no problem doing it the long way but if it doesn't need to be done and we can replace the CWR with stock and not tamper with the ROM, it seems logical.
Clearly I just got the tab recently and have been reading and reading but they seem so much different than the way phones work. I am very comfortable flashing ROMs/Kernels/Mods on phones, but just a little intimidated with the tablet (for now).

1- The RecoveryInstaller app only help to flash the recovery image so no you can just delete it.
2- You can flash a stock recovery image via CWM. You can get a repacked version here.

I figured that would be the case with the executable part of the apk.
I read that thread but wasn't sure if only the stock recovery by itself could be flashed w/o the prepacked ROM.

[ROM][13/12] ★ Asus Infinity Stock Rooted Odex - 10.4.4.23 Base ★

You can flash this straight over CleanROM 2.3 to 3.x or Asus Jelly Bean stock without a wipe if you want to test it – but it is a very good idea to wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache. You must be unlocked and have a custom recovery (TWRP/CWM) to flash this from the internal or external sdcard.
Don't forget to do a Nandroid Backup first and give the ROM 5 mins to stabilise!
This Rom is based off the latest Asus Infinity 10.4.4.23 WW full release. It will work on any locale infinity. The main thing I can see they have changed is the camera libraries. Other than that is looks pretty much the same as the previous release.
• Rom is ODEXed as Asus have done it
• SuperSU binary and apk included to give root access
• Busybox installed
• init.d support
• unsecured stock kernel
There are no other mods – please don’t ask for theming, changes or performance boosts. Those will come with CleanROM Inheritance v3.0

So is this actually the .23 firmware also? As in we could install this from your current Clean Rom Inheritence and use it to upgrade to .23 instead of downloading the update file from Asus and flashing it, rerooting and all? Cause that would be so much easier than going with Asus' file and starting from stock with data wipes and all.

Yes, as stated in the OP, this rom is almost stock with a few minor tweaks. The performance is exactly like the Asus rom you download from Asus. The only nice thing about this is it PRE-ROOTED, (if you use Asus stock rom you have to re root again), other than that nothing else is useful at the moment. Its performance is no where near Cleanrom 2.7.2.

It is based off the WW version but to be honest you could flash it on any SKU as the only difference between the two is the name in the build.prop file. It will work fine on a US device.
This file does not update the bootloader. So update from ics to jb from the Asus website by unzipping their file and flashing in twrp. You will lose your custom recovery so be prepared to flash it back from a pc using fastboot.
Please help with flashing
Does someone can pour the lihgt what kind of tool should I use to flash this Asus Stock 10.4.4.23 Odex CWM or TWRP. And it would be very informative to get steps for flashing by flashboot method.
I can see lot of files in ROM zip, but flashboot use only one. I completely confused.

You should use a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM to flash this. Not sure what you are talking about with fastboot? Why would you want to flash a ROM via fastboot? This is the Asus stock ROM slightly modded as explained in the first post.

That's completely unmodified. (I tried just installing it in CWM. Think I probably bricked doing something silly...)
I pulled this as well, but I'm curious if you had to flash back to stock firmware and recovery to get it. I tried using a rooted stock rom and the software update screen would give me a "modified devices don't get updates" message. I actually had to have stock recovery and system installed so that it would download. Did you have to do the same thing?

I have a modified boot.img- perhaps that blocks the ota?
My device is rooted.
It is on 4.2.1 genuine T-mobile software.

What can I do to update OTA?
I played around with this a while ago (my flash counter is at 29 last time I checked).
I think you have a few options:
1) maybe unroot and that might remove the modified status
2) use heimdall or odin to flash back to unrooted stock, including stock recovery and boot.img
3) flash one of the rooted JB roms, either stock, cyanogen, or our very own Teamapexq rom
4) download the OTA or the JB rom from the web and repackage it yourself to a flashable zip.
Option 1 might not work. Option 2-4 will work, 4 would be the most fun.

OMG, I would like to do it with no hassle.
I just want something to work ... grrr.
Option 2 would probably be the most straightforward. Essentially, you are unrooting. I just remembered, Samsung has Kies which might restore it to stock. You can download it from their website.
