Yes. I use Google Voice with the Groove IP app. Works great. I think there are several other services and apps that work well too.

If your using CM9 or 10, this works great: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1823701

yes
I was sick and tired of trying to find a straight answer, and ended up buying one without knowing.
Here's your answer : YES
The samsung galaxy tab 7 plus (the version with 3g, NOT the wifi only version) can be used as a normal phone to make calls and send sms WITHOUT any additional software.

That's interesting. I wouldn't have thought so. I believe the other responses on this thread are about the wi-fi only version of the Tab. I know mine is. The OP didn't specify which version, leaving everyone free to make assumptions. :silly:

Phone calls from stock Galaxy Tab

If you want to make calls from your tab just go to the market and get NetTalk it is free and work great using both wifi and data for placing calls. Only downside is no inbound calls, hey but I am sure someone will build a workaround.

Tried it, it works. I was able to dial my cellphone through my tab using nettalk.. I gave my 4 year old my tablet she started talking I can hear her but I wasnt able to talk back to her. Any suggestions welcome...

Well I know there can be a little delay sometime when talking but never unable to hear the other part. Try using the speaker phone option on your phone that may help. Not practicle but my help?

I can't find this app in the market, can post a link to it? Thx.
EDIT: found it in webmarket, but says its not compatible with galaxy tab....does anyone have a link to the apk file?
Groove IP and Google Voice, it works like a charm so far. I have my Tab rooted and can call normally, but I wanted wifi calling, without Skype. This app did the trick, it's actually pretty amazing. This should work on a wifi only tab as well.
The app is like $4 and worth it. I am still tweaking the call quality settings, but I am happy. You can find the Facebook page if you need to talk to the dev, and he/she seems pretty responsive.

[Q] SkyRoam's Gmate

Anybody has tried this little gizmo?
http://www.skyroam.com/index.php
I'm very interested, but I'm nor eager to spend 50+ € and discover it doesn't work with our 'marvelous' BT stack...
I tried just the app, and it's hideous. You can't search contacts in any way, you need to scrool all you list to find them. But i think this thing could awesome with a decent app

hi all
wow, last post was still 2011.
anyways, just to give an update on gmate.
i am currently using gmate+ on my note 10.1
gmate+ is the newer one from the standard gmate.
true, there are still snags like the contacts, but it serves my purpose well, not to hold another phone just to receive incoming calls / sms.
so far so good, as i just got it this morning.
=)
Yes they are handy. I use one & is a great device.
Theres also an easy fix if it flags up as "non verified" (fix works on rooted phones).

Gmate+ and Sprint Galaxy Note 2
Does anyone know if the Gmate+ will work with the Galaxy Note 2? I want to use Truphone in Europe and they say the phone must be unlocked. Since the SIM is hardwired into the Sprint version the Gmate+ looks like a good option. However, Truephone says the phone must be unlocked. How do I tell if it is?
You dont need a network unlocked phone to use a Gmate+ obviously but for all the features it needs to be rooted.
The one im selling I tested on my Note & my Note2 & yes it works.
you need a rooted phone for all the features.
what's the fix? sounds cool would save me a rtm... atm.

Problem with Gmate +
Hi !
I just bought a new gmate+ from skyroam to use with my Galaxy Note 3.
But when trying to use it, I can't verify it ! It says "you need to be connected to internet to verify gmate..."
But I am, as everything else work well and every other app has access to internet.
I contacted skyroam support that said to me to use an android <4.1 for verifying gmate. (what a wonderful idea... Skyroam : what about fixing your bugs ???).
I tried with a 4.0.4 android device --> same problem !
I think Skyroam has stopped service that allow verification on their servers. So my new Gmate+ is a brick !
Anyone has an idea ?
Thank you !
I have sent you a PM.

There are special libs that work with Kineto.apk. They are located in /system/lib, they are:
libganril.so
libkineto.so
librilswitch.so
They all must be on the phone to make wifi calling work. Will they work flawlessly on her phone? I honestly don't know, but that's how it is on the G2x. I never even heard of that phone
I'll try pushing
libganril.so
libkineto.so
librilswitch.so
into her system/lib folder and see what happens. Do i need to link these shared obj files or can i just place them?

Thats probably why i never heard of it, he's right. You chances of getting it to work are slim if it's not a T-Mo phone.

Yes i am aware that the wifi calling apk is for t mobile. I figured i might give it a try though and see what happens. Maybe thats a dead end. So, I have nettalk on her phone at the moment but it only works on out going calls and gives her a different number. I need something similar to t mobile wi-fi calling that allows her to keep her number? I am willing to buy from the market. One time fee though. Nothing like pay per call or credited accounts. Ideas?

There is no way the T-Mobile Wi-Fi calling app will work for you. Regardless of if you can get the app to run on the phone, it requires specific support on the carrier side to work.

Yeah i have thought about doing that but from what I've heard, she gets assigned a GV number and is not able to keep her old one. It's like having a whole new number. then she would have to hand that out. Thats why i have been hesitant and left this as my last resort. But hey, something is better than nothing any day in my book!!
Or am i wrong? Does she get to keep/use her old one?
@andrewNY, yeah i was hoping that wasn't the case, thanks for confirming though!

[Q] Verizon Turning off CDMA

Ok so i'm having an issue, I use my phone to tether as my main internet connection. Before with my x2 i was able to turn off CDMA and use EVDO only. So text wouldn't cut off my tethering date. On this phone i'm in EVDO only mode but i still get text messages :/
I dont think i can get phone calls in evdo only but the text still mess up the internet. This is weird
This phone does data and you can use the phone at the same time. Not sure about it while tethering, shouldn't be a difference though.

Always works. Its a qualcomm SoC thing. Rezound and thunderbolt could as well. Kind of silly to jump to conclusions like that without actually seeing if it hurts anything. I've answered phone calls while playing black light online.

Its not really silly, with the x2 if you got a text or a phone call you lost internet. Everything i read said it was because of the verizon network. so i figured it was every phone. Just what i read and was told by people on here and verizon.
New to Verizon.. if I understand correctly you're saying this phone can do voice and data? Even on 3g ?
I thought Verizon's network couldn't do that. If the previous statement is correct then can we use the international dialers that have video built into them ?

I also came from ATT so this is a nice surprise for me.
as for the dialers, I know there are dialer apps out there (which generally come from non US phones) that have video calling features built into them, is there anyone watching this thread who could tell me if it would be possible to get one and make use of it? and would it require root to replace the dialer app? (I'm guessing it would)
thanks

if you flash cm/aokp you should be able to use "internet calling" aka sip. There are a few other sip based apps out there that will let you make calls but not with the normal dialer.

I have a microcell as well. I am running Embyro 5.3 with the UCLF6 baseband and the 3.0.42 Cymbaline- RD04-2.7 kernel. I think the microcell is $20 a month for unlimited phone calls. It's running at 3G. I got it before I* switched to cable for my internet access. Works like a charm and I never get close to using up my data plan. I usually run about a 7400 on the AnTuTu benchmark also.

There are a couple "plans" for the microcell. One is free and uses your existing plan's minutes. The other is the one you mentioned. And it is only 3G, but 4.5mbps is still decent just for a phone.

Yes, but they now use Ringto, another free voip provider, which works just about as well as Google Voice.
