Help: AT&T HTC ONE X on straight talk, how to update to 4.0.4 - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Hello everyone, I looked everywhere and cannot find the solution.
I've gotten data, mms, and voice to work on my at&t version of the htc one x, however, I cannot figure out how to get it to update to 4.0.4.
Since its a OTA update, does that mean i need to be on the AT&T network in order to receive the update? if so, f it im rooting my phone.
Thanks in advance guys.

I'm on Straight Talk. I updated it over wifi. You can also download it from the HTC site.
BUT now I'm crying because I can't root it now.

People say that updated as helped battery life. Rooting is worth it but at the moment there isn't a rom out there as good as stock sense for the HOX. That my opinion of course.

I didn't really use it much before I updated it. Had it a few hours before I updated it. I can get through a day of casual use without it dying. It doesn't use much battery at idle.
I like having root capabilities for TitaniumBackup, avast!, and just messing around with stuff. (e.g. deleting that stupid sound effect when booting.)
IMO While it's in 1.85 or lower: root it, then unlock the bootloader using that hex edit, then install TWRP and the rooted 2.20. Or trade me phones.

Try caulks rom. I'm not on the carrier but his rom had the carrier option on first boot set up. I could be wrong so make sure to nandroid backup.

That would be my opinion as well. Or instead of stock rooted 2.20, one of the several custom ROMs which are already on later versions than AT&T's OTA.
I can say for a fact that KingCobra includes the Straight Talk APN.

Rooting and custom Rom will solve any battery issues. I can get 40 hours light use and 26 hours heavy use on a single charge using king cobra Rom. And its better than stock sense imo

Use the APN that Straight Talk gives you. I use them but I do not set the proxy on APN. The proxy has issues, but it's needed for MMS. The proxy works fine on MMS.
GO TO: Settings --> Mobile network --> Access Point Names --> Menu --> New APN --> enter the following settings --> then enable the new APN you made.
name: Straight talk
APN: att.mvno
Proxy: <not set>
port: 80
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy: 66.209.11.33
MMS Port: 80

I went to HTC site downloaded the Android 4.0.4 update, everything went smoothly but theres no Sense 4.1 upgrade? anyone know how do i get this upgrade?

I'm on Straight Talk, rooted on 1.85, then unlocked the bootloader. Then I was prompted to update to 4.04. My plan was to have some time to put on a JB rom from that scott guy, but I accidentally hit upload when the prompt came up. So I lost root. To answer your question, I have not noticed a difference in the battery life. It's still very good. W/ my usage I easily get 14-18 hours on one charge. I am however SUUUPER glad to get rid of that annoying menu bar on legacy apps. I have it configured so that tapping brings up the menu and long-holding is app swapping. Feels A LOT better to me.
However, here is my question. I'm not a pro "rooter", I'm can follow tutorials and instructions to unlock bootloaders and root devices. So being that I am unlocked but not rooted, can I still flash a different rom? If so who can point me in the direction of instructions as to how to do so. Thanks!:good:

Unlock with the token you got before. Install recovery. Flash rom of choice. Just remember that now you will have to flash kernel separate in fastboot.

[Q] Please help me update my HOX, Im unlocked and on simple mobile

Hi, please I need help. I have a HOX on 1.73 and my battery life is not that great I heard that if I update the battery life will improve among other things. I dont have AT&T so OTA update is out of the question my phone is unlocked and on simple mobile, plus I am not rooted. Please help me, give me step by step instructions and links to all necessary files, thanks in advance.
Start here....
Based on your photo, you are only SuperCID, and not BL unlocked. It says "LOCKED" at the top.
You must have rooted before, in order to have SuperCID. Did you do something to remove root, such as run an RUU?
Updating may improve your WiFi and data reception, and may get your better battery life. But its not a silver bullet, and don't assume its going to make a huge difference.
I can think of a couple different ways to update to 1.85 and be rooted:
Method A:
1) Run the 1.85 RUU (this will wipe your phone): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1670238
2) If you don't want to be rooted, that's it. If you want root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709424
Method B:
1) Run the 1.85 RUU (this will wipe your phone): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1670238
2) Unlock the bootloader (this will wipe your phone again)
3) Install CWM or TWRP recovery
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671873
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1677447
4) Flash this for root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1673935
Method C:
1) Unlock the bootloader (will wipe your phone)
2) Install CWM or TWRP recovery.
3) Flash this to update to 1.85 (this will also wipe your phone): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1674080
4) Flash this for root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1673935

Holy crap. I just noticed from your pic that you have an S-Off phone. I'm not completely sure what this means, but you may not have to unlock the bootloader to do anything (and everything) to your phone. I think this is also why you have SuperCID (I think S-Off development units come with SuperCID also).

Yeah I wouldn't mind trading, I don't really know what to do with this either. I used to flash roms all the time when I had my galaxy s but no matter how good a rom is there is always some problems with it and they usually come up when you need your phone the most that's why Im trying to stick with stock rom and maybe just root it to delete all the bloatware. If a developer wants to trade my phone for a complete stock black htc one x I wouldn't mind I just need it to be updated and sim unlocked. The only thing is I dont know how we would trade and make sure its legit and Im not just going to trade my phone for some broken one or just get completely ripped off. Any tips?

it is still sim locked but if you're on straight talk that won't matter. They use At&T towers.
I'm currently running cleanrom 3.0
I'd trade with you for sure but I'm on the other side of the country and this is my only phone so I'd be without one for a week using UPS ground.
im using my hox on tmobile just flash the one s radio like I did my signal is way stronger and my battery is easily lasting for more than a day now

You must have an unlocked bootloader with custom recovery signal and battery life improved after flashing but sadly its stuck on edge if we can figure out a way to change the frequency to 1700 like we can on the note we should be able to get 4g/hspa+. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/10103148/radio_tmous_0.16.31501S.16_2_10.22.31501S.10L.zip

Wanna help my Mom?!

Okay... now that I have everyone's attention...
Here is the deal... in between a series of insane work trips my Mom comes over and says she just bought a new One X, and can I set it up for her.
I am pretty comfortable with this stuff, or at least following directions , but I am seriously pressed for time.
I started reading last night and think I have a pretty good handle on what and where, but want to confirm I am on the right path...
Phone is currently on 4.0.3 with version 1.85.502.3
I have zero plans to load custom ROMs on this since all my Mom needs is stability, but I want to root so that I can get in TiBu, clean out the bloat, setup a backup schedule and so on.
I have read a couple of comments that the 2.2 software gives better battery life and a few other improvements, so would not mind putting that on.
I have not gotten any OTA update notifications since I turned the phone on.
What is my best path?
Can I simply root the device using these instructions http://briefmobile.com/how-to-root-htc-one-x-att and then install the rooted stock 2.2 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1812459
Sorry for the dummy questions, but I am leaving for another work trip tomorrow AM and was hoping to get this done, although to be perfectly honest it is not as if she wont have a working phone, but if I can do this all up front then I can let her play around with it, customize etc and not have to redo it all when I get back.
THANKS for your help!

Believe me man you would want to how much bloat and crap that att throws on the phone. Might as well give her something worth having the rom is very stable and would never have to fix it for her.
Also after you install TWRP for her (the recovery) Make sure to make a nano backup of her stock image then flash with CleanROM and make one of that to. So if she ever has a issue she is just one click away from a new phone.:good:

I think the problem is that if you're going to root anyway, you've already made it so she can't stay current on the "official" path.
I've found CleanROM to be far more stable than AT&T's PoS.

+1000.
You'll never know it isn't stock sense/att except that all the apps which, if she clicks them she'll get charged additional usage for, are gone.
FWIW, ATT's OTA isn't anything special. My phone was three months old and was still running 1.73. Never succeeded in an OTA update.
So, CleanROM 4.5 was a huge improvement.
I would say that, if she is not totally interested in Modding, that she should either leave it with all stock ,or switch to CleanROM. I am running CleanROM because I like the stock feel, although I have modded a few things. I also liked the removale of bloatware. I feel that the best place for rooting your One X is on onexroot.com. just make sure you choose the right ROM and root method depending on your model, such as international AT&T, or Rodgers. Hope this helps!

2.20 breaks root if you go with the stock RUU. So you are going to be unlocking the bootloader and going off the "official" path anyway. Which means you will have to periodically update your mother's phone anyways and she will software warranty.
I would go with one of three options:
1. Root/Unlock and flash CleanROM 4.5 (you will have to update her phone every so often and she loses software warranty)
2. Root, stay with 1.85 and de-bloat (don't really recommended because of multitask issue)
3. Don't root, leave phone stock and stay on the official path (if you don't have the time to maintain your mother's phone go with this)
Actually, if you root &unlock bootloader now, flash a custom recovery, you can manually update the firmware to 2.2x, flash back your stock recovery and relock it you have a fully updated, stock device that you can always go back and unlock if u want to later.

True that for root on 2.20, you will need to unlock the bootloader anyway, so you may as well go ahead and root, SuperCID and unlock bootloader.
A 4th option would be to flash a stock rooted 2.20, 2.23, or 2.29 ROM (after unlocking the bootloader). Honestly, the 2.2X stock ROMs are quite good, and you won't really need to update the phone much after that; really mostly if you just want to.
Personally, I would suggest either leaving as-is on 1.85, and root and debloat; or unlock the bootloader and flash either a rooted stock 2.2X ROM, or custom ROM that does not divert too much from stock 2.2X (like CleanROM).
Updating to 2.20 the "official" way is just robbing yourself of any other options, until (if and when) a root method is found for 2.20. Personally recommend you stay away from that.

Custom ROMs have a huge variation in their stability. Sure, ROMs which are AOSP have some things broken, and ones based on the leading edge (Jellybean) have issues too, since they are ports, do not fully support our hardware, etc.
But many of the ROMs you will see in Development are based stock ROMs, with bloat removed, performance tweaks, and some features added, without any real drastic changes. CleanROM, King Cobra among others actually run smoother and more stable than stock. Don't knock all custom ROMs, especially since you haven't even tried any on this device.
CleanROM 4.5 is better than stock. It's the best rom I have ever flashed on any device ever.

I'd say just root it lol makes life easier with root and there's plenty of guides over in the Dev and general sections just pick what fits your needs. I'd suggest unlocking the boot loader rooting and changing to a custom rom if trying to tether cause then there's no tmo stuff to check on you. For instance I just go tmos new unlimited data plan with no caps but the downside is you're not supposed to be able to tether well I can lol plus you can remove sense or upgrade sense either benifits are far greater than stock plus you can always restore to stock for warranty minus using htcdev unlock method I believe
I completely agree with above statement. With rooting your device truly becomes your own. If you don't like something simply change it when rooted. It's customization on the deepest level. And thanks to xda we have a lot of great roms, to choose from. Also mods, kernels,, and firmware. It gives you the Ability to enjoy your device. Also I must tell you I have found in my experience custom roms are far MORE stable than stock Rom . On stock Rom before rooting I would get rebooting all the time with my device, after rooting and custom Rom that completely stopped! No more annoying rebooting all the time. Custom roms have many more features than stock. And you can tweak the Rom to your liking.also a lot of the time custom roms have a nicer layout than stock and more options. I've never had issues with having a custom rom. It's so worth going through the S-OFF and rooting process. You won't regret it for a second! I sure haven't. I can now truly enjoy the capability of my device where as before I was locked out. I can't stress enough how wonderful it is to be s-off and rooted! Give it a try! You won't be sorry!

1.Root with towelroot (search) AND install SuperSU from the play store.
2.Install the latest recovery from here using the DD method listed directions from the TWRP site. This is from T-Mobile and works! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2263001
MAKE A BACKUP!!! DO IT! No more messing around with Safestrap and the bitter warnings!
To get into recovery hold "home+volume up" during boot. Whoooo!!!!
3. Install the Lollipop gpe ROM from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2539361
This uses the aroma installer and works well.
You may, or may not have to input *#6463*# into dialpad to change settings to LTE etc.. This adjustment may alsobe in the ROM settings!
4. Optional - install the googy kernel
I like this kernel better though there isn't a huge difference from the hulk kernel. Make sure to install the GE edition 1.3.0. NOT TOUCHWHIZ! : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2741181
ENJOY!

Moderator, please move to relevant forum or incorporate into the general info thread if this isn't the right place.
If you are using the Straight Talk Galaxy S4 with build number
JSS15J.S975LUDUANB1,
You can root using towelroot.
SuperSU will also deactivate Knox.
Safestrap version 3.72 works for getting a proper recovery installed with the option at boot for system or recovery. Note that it will say safestrap is disabled but will still allow your choice to boot into recovery.
Make a backup in recovery as soon as you can.
The zip to allow tethering WILL NOT work, and you will be stuck on the Samsung logo.
Xposed works well, but do not use the option in gravity box to add the recovery option to your power menu or your device will freeze upon pressing the power button.
Greenify works well.
Advise against ROM installation, as well as initial upgrade. You will lose app to SD ability if you upgrade.
The boot loader is not unlocked, so no cool kernels here

No not yet, I just got the phone so I haven't done a lot to it yet. I was able to get tethering working and it was pretty easy and I got a nice extended battery case for it yesterday that I love. Other than that I haven't had time to do a lot else to it.

I used tmo twrp. Flashed tmo and att roms. I also have the Odin file. I am not sure but I am on the s975L which I thought was att not sure but pretty sure. However it also says i337 underbattery ...I've tried more tmo roms than anything. No safestrap but I might try that later. Seems we don't have locked bootloader. This is great. However unlock is next for me. Having a blast hacking the hell out of it. So far I have had no issues. Again I'm not new to this. Lol. It's an addiction. I have sprint note 4 as my DD. So this is my fix. Lmao.

As far as I know, the bootloader IS locked, but can be bypassed using Loki to patch kernels for custom roms. Glad to see somebody else on this phone

That's strange. If it was locked I wonder how I've used tmo twrp no loki or SS and flashed tons of roms so far...I just odined back from a modem issue. But rerooted now off to get some modems etc...boot and all. I'll keep reporting. Thank you bro. I maintain many devices and carriers and am about to start a channel on YouTube. I do music writing now with keyboard. Now I'm just getting a hand on s4 straight talk and will make a list of all working roms.

True.. I don't know as much about it as I like. I just wasn't able to use fastboot or "unlock" using fastboot.
If you are working with the modems let me know how that goes, and maybe you can help with an issue I'm having? My GPS won't work after trying a ROM with safestrap. What I've posted here is a result of trying to fix it. I consistently show NO satellites. I consulted the local phone fixers to no avail. I was wondering if it could be related to a modem issue? I think the ROM I first tried did something deep to my phone, though Phone Info showed at the time everything to be original concerning baseband etc.. And a factory reset didn't help.
I'm at the point now of thinking its hardware rather than software but the coincidence to trying the ROM was too high.
Hey everyone!
I am working with this phone and am trying to get a backup modem, can you please ,make a suggestion?
Also are there any ROMs that allow easy access to umts menu through servicemenu? I know the base firmware cripples this and I'm trying to get a work around!
thanks in advanced!

Going back to Verizon from PagePlus root

Hello all,
It has been a while since I did anything to my S3 as I had moved my wife from VZN to PagePlus and had the phone custom-rooted to work with them (this was before they changed and allowed 4G BYOPs).
I have just moved her to an S4 (which I had rooted over a year ago with ROOT66 and help from this forum) and would like to return my S3 to either the newest Verizon version for the S3 OR if it is available in a new version, ROOT66 (I had saved I535VRBLK3.7z prior to the switch to PP, which I know is old). Whichever way I go, I would like to have it unlocked to play with certain files.
Right now, I have 4.1.2, build JZO54K.i535VRBMA2. i believe I saw some S3 have 4.4? Is that the latest for the S3, and if YES, is it good, or should I stay with an earlier one?
In checking my archived S3 folder, I see I have saved the following
Odin307
SCH-I535_VZW-I535VRBMF1_Original.zip
Stock Root - VRALG7 - ODEX.zip
Stock Root I535VRBMF1 - ODEX.zip
root66_VZW_I535VRBLK3_nowipe.7z
Samsung_USB_Driver_v1_4_6_0.exe
I do have SuperSU 1.04 and Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper installed and running on the S3.
Any help would be appreciated. It has been over a year since I did this so if you would be kind to me as I get my feet wet again learning how to do this, I would be very appreciative.
Thanks.

4.4.2 is the latest one via OTA if the phone is unlocked you can go to another version ie lollipop roms. I however highly advise against taking any OTAs from big red

I don't need the latest update (4.4.2) if it doesn't do much or has some added baggage / can't be rooted. I would be happy with either ROOT66 or a stock VZN that can be rooted; just need help with the steps to load it over what I have (to wipe out any changes that were made for the PagePlus 3G usage).
I have no problem wiping it clean either; in fact that might be desirable. Not going to use it on a postpaid Verizon account - maybe prepaid Verizon, ROK, or Straight Talk, since all 3 allow you to BYOP.
Thanks again for any help from anyone.

I'd highly suggest straight talk. As far as coming from another carrier there wasn't anything special I had to do when I went from VZW to straight talk other than put the sim card in the phone and change the apn settings to ST

I do have their CDMA kit coming Nov 4th to the local store and will try them for a month.
**BUT** I must restore my S3 back to original status, preferably rooted. I had it modded for PagePlus and I know there will be issues if I try to use it as-is with any other prepaid MVNO, since it was forced to 3G mode....

FIXED - I found ROOT66_VZW_I535VRBMA2_ FULL_WIPE.7z via a different forum and let it do a full wipe/reinstall of that version of Kit Kat. Might not be the newest but it gave me root. Phone is ready to go back on VZN.

In my opinion you are much better off with that kitkat rom than you would be with verizon's. I agree with ShabesBlue, do not take updates from verizon. If you ever get the official NE1 bootloader you are locked down: no custom recoveries, only three (at the moment) roms to choose from.

As soon as I got the ROM up and running, I froze FWUpdate and SDM with TPro so that would never happen. Happy where it is at and it is a S3, so there is not going to be any more development for it anyway.
Cheers
