After trying many JB I've found that the only thing I significantly liked was the Camera/Gallery.
Would the JB camera/gallery work in ICS or GB Roms?
Any thoughts?
Normally I would say create a backup then try for yourself...but since I'm already on cm9 I'll test...iop report back in a bit...
Chances on working on ics... I think its possible
Chances on working on gb...unlikely
EDIT 1: so here's what I've done so far...I deleted camera.apk and googlegallary.apk from my phone using a root explorer. I the extracted gallery2.apk from cm10 and placed that in /system/app using a root explorer. I then edited the permissions to "rw-r-r". Rebooted. As of now gallery works flawlessly...camera doesn't...which doesn't surprise me...
Also...gallery2.apk is two apps in one...its the camera and the gallery...

GB Camera on JB
How about the other way around? I'm in the same boat with having tried a bunch of ICS and JB roms. The difference is that the only thing I DIDN'T like was the camera (gallery ok.) - laggy, panorama mode often not working (forced into macro), really poor video recoding - limited to 720p and even with that very laggy and choppy, even 480p is sluggish and keeps recording sound a few second after you tap stop - overall really bad compared to GB which has way more functions and flawless 1080p recording.
Is there a way to replace the stock SGS camera in JB roms with the Infuse GB camera?

No, gb camera has touchwiz dependencies (not the touchwiz launcher), you would need a Samsung based Rom to use a Samsung camera...
And the laggy camera isn't related to the camera app, its much deeper then that...if I am correct it needs driver/kernel fixes...
Also, when did it have 1080p recording? Last I checked the infuse doesn't even support 1080p recording...and I never had it on any gb Rom that I cam remember (I've tried em all...except some of the newer ones...)

Sorry, my bad, I thought I saw it there somewhere but it must have been the 1280x720p mode - u're right, no 1080p recording on Infuse in GB but 720 is nice and smooth.

I did, I think, use Samsung based ICS and JB roms (ported from Galaxy S II or III) - still no way to drop a GB camera into those? .. just curious but obviously if it was possible it would probably have been done already...

All of the ics and jb roms are cyanogenmod based/aosp based...so allthough they come from other Samsung devices they are still missing the twframework-res.apk and other dependencies...I started working on porting a stock Samsung Rom, but I'm just not skilled enough for that kind of a port...
Even if we did have a Samsung base o think the camera would still be laggy due to drivers/kernel
(I know all this port stuff, and dependencies is pretty confusing...)
I will agree hat I do miss that smooth 720p recording :/ maybe one day we will have it again...

I was thinking of jumping onto an ICS rom since they seem to have ironed out loads of bugs. Anyway, I have a question.
When you get a message and your phones screen is off, usually it's displayed on the lockscreen with the contact image in a little box window thing (at least on sense) anyway my question is this. Is this also on the ICS roms, if so are the contact images finally at a decent resolution or are they still the same old blurry pixilated cluster**** they've always been? thanks!

well if your looking a ICS just look around for a good one
im using tab-mod v.4 ICS and its amazing everything is working absolutely everything, however someimtes not allot actaully rare but the rom can freeze when playing system straining games like modern combat 3 or gta III, other than that its amazing
though blindice 5.4 looks good but il never try it, it does have some bugs like most ICS roms
if you like ill give a list with links on the best ICS roms and how bugish free they are that i have used

UPDATE 18/01/13 :
V3.3 ( For roms with JB 3.16 base )
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
* Fixed audio bitrate and channels. Thanks lthawker
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
This camera is based off lyapota's - One X HTCCamera JB Plus, Extrim edition. Thanks for the awesome camera.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1925013
I compared the code of the One S and X cameras and it was 99% the same. I have added the few code changes and also some images had to be resized for the One S.
40/30/20 Mbps are now selectable from the settings menu of the camera.
Image Non Forced and Forced 100% is the same.
Video Auto mode = 30 Mbps
Image Quality non forced = 100%
UPDATE 05/09 :
V2.3 ( For roms with 2.31 base, eg ViperOneS 1.1 )
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
* Added optional Volume+Up Camera Shutter ( in Camera app only. Normal functionality when not using Camera )
* Fixed JPEG 100 bug. Thanks abo_mara7
* All in one installer. Choose from
Quick test I did. I zoomed in on my monitor and took some video, these are two screenshots from the stock camera and 40mbps. Tried to keep the zoom level the same to make it a fair test.

You got it.
you'll need camera.apk modding to remove caps (but it's very simple)
media_profiles is not used at all, so video bitrate will be 10mbps with this mod.
i was trying to hack some camera libs to have higher res on slow motion recording before release. I got some problems and only 800x480 is working at 4X recording, it's almost impossible to debug *.so libs, if someone can help me i'll be happy to learn (i can do 2x slow motion recording but 720p is not working like HTC Sensation, only 800x480 at 4X)

I don't pretend to know what I'm talking about, but trying the 40 mod gave me a bit rate of 39Mbps so I'm guessing you're mistaken. Tried the twenty but still had 13Mbps (same as 'stock')
The 40 only recorded for 11 seconds then froze. The file still saved though.

Wow, this sounds exciting. I was a bit let down when they did a match up between the Galaxy S III and the One S/One X video recording comparison. The One series video seems noticeably inferior and exhibit what seems to be some choppiness. Hopefully this mod will make the One S bar none the best camera phone (well pure view and N9 will still be better). Now my other grip with the One series camera is the overuse of filtering like sharpness and over saturation. Hopefully there will be a mod to solve that issue.

Just tested 20Mbps and getting around 19. I think it depends whats in the scene, if you tax it enough and shake the camera I think you will get 20.
Stock I think 10Mbps is the limit.
good news then! i found bitrate values hardcoded in camera.apk too so i was thinking that they was capping media_profiles
What about higher bitrates on 720p? The video would be smaller and the 1s just has a qHD screen, so 1080p is useless, unless you watch them on a FullHD TV.
This is a great mod though!
is this for Sense or Vanilla Roms? or should it work on both of them?
This should work with no issues coming off a fresh wipe right?
This mod also works with One X?

I was wondering possible to run a custom ROM jelly bean and have samsung's TouchWiz Camera features? I am currently running CM10 9-17 Nightly build. I love the fast Jelly Bean experience but I do miss the touchWiz camera features and speed. I also want to report bugs such a GPS Lock issues, volume issues with both speakerphone & ear piece speaker.(very loud) Please help because I'd rather just know what to install from others than try a million different ROMs risking brickin my phone.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
well there really isn't a million roms... the list is pretty short... if you can follow instructions you won't brick your phone. and besides, these phones are so easy to fix when you screw up
what you're looking for is the JellyWiz rom, based on the leaked tmobile TouchWiz 4.1.1
all in all it works pretty well, not perfect though.
Well since I can't post in the development thread, I'll ask here since I didn't find my answering search.
I'm on CM10-9/17. Is there anyway to get the camera to save pictures to the external sd card?
Back in my Droidx days, after flashing a particular ROM, someone came up with a flashable apk for the Motorola Blur Camera. What are the possibilities of this happening with the S3?

When you do a clean install, the contents on /sd card and /ext_sdcard are never touched. That's why the pictures, videos, music and downloads always appear after a flash.
I like to have music, videos and pictures on the external sd card so if I have to send the phone back for any reason I can keep my personal files.

Hey I really like jellywiz, it's everything I want from Jelly Bean with all the touchWiz features but I've noticed my headset sounds very low, almost no bass. I thought it was my 3.5mm wire but I plugged my brothers phone in and played music and it sounded fine. Let me know if anybody else out there noticed that issue. Thanks

Yeh I have the same rom as you CM9 R8 and to me the image on the screen isnt as clear but when you take a pic it seems the resolution turns out better than you expected. I also noticed that the camera button on the side of your phone doesnt work which is lame I really liked using that for picture taking it was handy but oh well cant be perfect for a rom. If you want also do what I did, I just downloaded other camera and video apps. Way better than the stock app and on the screen they show up as better resolution than the stock app
Yeah, unfortunately the camera apps that come with CM/AOKP ROMs are very lacking on this phone, compared to the stock camera app. There are some third-party apps that do reasonably well, though. I like Camera360.

The black bars on the side is because the phone has a 16x9 screen but the picture is being taken in the 4:3 ratio. It's the same thing as watching an old tv show on a new widescreen tv.
Talking about our camera, has anyone figured out a way to port our camera to Cyanogen? That's the only thing that's stopping me from flashing a Rom, considering I've had this phone for a year.

Well I'm running the RemICS_UX port from the HD2. Not bad of a rom. It's over samsungized but I'll find a theme for it. It claims to have the 1080p recording so lets see how that works out.
I personally don't care for all the "features" of the stock CAMERA app since I can always download a 3rd party app that will be on par. I only use night mode, macro and automatic. My main concern is 1080p recording (and that the mic doesn't sound so crappy).

I believe the 1080 not working has more to do with HTC Android drivers for the camera, rather than the available choice in the software.

Yeah, trying to record in 1080 makes the button useless. I'm starting to feel that the phone doesn't have real 1080p feature. My last phone was a Huawei Comet/U8150 and I had a very similar issue with the camera. Turned out that the phone had a 2.0 megapixel camera that was made to look like a 3.0 by the stock software. It was a sorry excuse of a camera.
I'm going to have to think about this one. I wonder if we could somehow port or rewrite a code to get 1080p working. Sadly, I know nothing about android development. My main thought was to sit the htc camera apk on top of cyanogen but I've read up that it's not that simple.... which I find weird considering someone has the beats by dre stuff on their mytouch4g slide rom.
Its not to complicated to understand but it is to fix. You see it does have true 1080 recording and it still one of the best cellphone cameras to date. Thing is if you want to run a custom ROM that is not based of the original T-Mobile release then some things may not be the same, the camera being one.
Unless you can get ahold of the proprietary camera drivers or write you're own you will be missing much of what is available. And any app based off the HTC framework will not work of different, such as cyanogen or even aosp.
Even phones that have been nearly torn apart by some super smart people doesn't mean that everything imaginable is possible or at least not easy. Try running sense on a Samsung phone, not too easy. Just saying be happy for what you have unless you know a sneaky backdoor to these issues that no one has thought of yet

I've done a few side-by-sides while flashing back and forth. I can't tell the difference personally. The big difference is the volume in the camcorder app though, it's about 1/2 the volume if recorded using the TW camera.
So you find the camcorder to be lower/quieter via TW than AOSP?
What about phone (ear) and speaker phone volume?
The AOSP camera has a noticeably greater shutter lag and lacks the anti-shake feature which is really helpful.
i have flashed back and forth for a long time and TW camera is just a better camera hands down. Ive tested over and over again and the aosp just doesnt add up. Anyone tried the 4.3 aosp cam yet???

I tried the 4.3 camera and didn't like the lack of settings and photosphere did not work for me on CM10.1.
I personally am not a fan of the touchwiz camera, and have used camera zoom fx for the longest while. I just recently began using the aosp 4.2 camera and have grown to really love it's simplicity and picture quality. Swiping to the right to access the gallery is just awesome. I did test the 4.3 camera and really did not like it. It had a lack of options (though it is a leak) and got fc's when switching from front to back cameras.
With any camera, it's all about knowing is options and layout and making your knowledge of the app work for you. Currently aosp is the clear winner for me.

Not sure on that as I almost never record video, but now I'm curious..
For me at least, the TW camera is why I have not flashed any AOSP based ROM. I just love the TW cam to much. I also use my camera a lot which is why I won't let TW go.
