Xtc clip or downgrade. - HTC Desire S

I'm htcdev unlocked, now is it better to downgrade and s-off myself or spend the £14.99 and have it done by xtcclip. I know there is a fair mix of both methods in this forum. What are the pros/cons of each.

Are you sure xtc works on latest bootloader? If not you'll have to downgrade anyway

Know very little about xtcclip and can't seem to find that much about what it does or how, hence the question.Sorry if it's already in a topic it seems it appears as a lot of answers but can't seem to find a clear topic on the subject.

XTC Clip:
Pros:
forever S-Off, clear SIMLOCK etc, Super CID
Cons:
no OTA's since you have super CID, never ever S-On again, no of warranty anymore
I have an XTC Clip here but have decided that I'll take the downgrad way with revolutionary.io .
Then I had the 7.xx Bootloader, installed CWM Recovery and downgraded it to ENG 2.00.2002 Bootloader.
Everything works fine for me that way.

Ok, last one. If I downgrade will I be able to use existing nandroid backups created or will I have to ditch them

You will only be S-OFF and Super CID, so yes you can use them.

Well I've been considering it as it would also give me SIM free I think. I'm due for upgrade on December and would make it more saleable. So thinking doing the downgrade to enable the clip. Wasn't sure the backup would need the same hboot

That depends on the ROM
if not you can downgrad hboot and flash an ENG hboot 2.00.2002
I've done this after S-OFF'ing with revolutionary as I would keep the CID since im on a HTC CID with no branding.

mmHg intention was to flash the eng hboot, also the new radio

Then you should be able to use you old backups again.
Because you have your old partition layout again.

Sim unlocking with revolutionary.io and making OTA updates safe (when XTC don’t work)

Hi! Glad to finally be posting on this board that has already helped me so much.
I’m hoping this can be a guide for people who have the same specific aim as me, the solution to which only seems to exist in scattered and uncertain form at present across various discussions. I think it would be good to put it in one place, as it took me a lot of time and searching to work all this out with confidence! Apologies if I was just thick and the info is actually easily available. There's also an important question at the end!
The aim: sim unlocked Desire S that is safe for selling - accepts OTA updates and hopefully safe for warranty.
Ideal solution: XTC Clip. I actually have one. But it wouldn’t work. I’m asking about that in the Raskal forum...
Second solution, confirmed working for me, but with one caveat:
Unlock with revolutionary.io. Now you have sim unlock! Yay! But your hboot is now “SAGA PVT SHIP S-OFF RL HBOOT-6.98.1002”, which I understand may brick your phone if you try an OTA update. Boo. So we need to downgrade the hboot.
I used this nice succinct guide posted by foX2delta, here.
Now the odd thing for me was that I expected this to give me hboot 0.98. So when it didn’t I was VERY confused. What it gives you in fact is “SAGA PVT ENG S-OFF RL HBOOT-6.98.2000”. Note the two subtle differences to what you had before.
Now at this point I'm not sure whether the phone will accept OTA updates. Can anyone comment? To be safe we're going to install an RUU to give a normal hboot.
I went for a 2.3.3 RUU, so that I could test the OTA update. And sure enough it worked! And now I have a Desire S still sim unlocked running 2.3.5 and sense 3.0 and ready to accept the forthcoming 4.0 update if it ever arrives. Hboot is "SAGA PVT SHIP S-OFF RL HBOOT-2.00.0002".
So the only final issue is the S-Off, and here's my question that I can't find an answer for: can we undo the S-Off and keep the sim unlock?
Cheers you knowledge wizards! And of course please correct me if I've committed any fallacies.
Hi!
Revolutionary will unlock SIM on Desire S?
Your s-off should be s-on if you ran the ruu. Unless.the xtc clip did actually work then you will be s-off.forever

If by Sim I unlock you mean network unlock then xtc does that but revolutionary doesn't and as started above cycle cannot be reversed.
What is your cid?

I used revolutionary.io to S-OFF my Desire S and it is still sim locked...
Are you sure your XTC Clip didn't work?

[Question->Solved] Downgrade hboot 2.00.0002 or use XTC clip

Hello,
I got my Desire S today and it has hboot 2.00.002 on it.
I want to know now, whats the best way to S-OFF my phone.
Using an XTC clip or going through the procedure of downgrading hboot and S-OFF with Revolutionary?
According to XTC clip I got some questions, will it fully s-off my phone so I can write every Radio or hboot on it?
EDIT: After a lot reading I recommend everybody to use the first option and wait till HTC drops the support of the Desire S

do more research and you'll be able to decide yourself.
My questions are based on my research and as I understand the XTC clip S-OFF are permanent and your can access and flash everything, am I right?
Both XTC and downgrade gives you full S-OFF
With XTC you can't go back to S-ON for warranty.
With downgrade method you can flash an eng hboot and get back to S-ON in case you need warranty
Tapatalked from a Desire S waiting for Kernel 3 sources. WAKE UP HTC!!!!!!
Ok thank you, I think I'll downgrade now, should I take the oldest RUU for my unbranded european Desire S or do I have to look on a specific Radio Version?
EDIT: Took the REALLY oldest and everything worked.

Desire S Bootloader Question

I have read various guides, and eventually taken the plunge to downgrade my bootloader.
htcDev Unlock
Goldcard
Install oldest RUU
S-OFF using revolutionary
Flash CWM recovery
Backup Stock 2.33 ROM with Sense
Install CM9
Feeling quite pleased with myself, even though you guys have really done all the hard work, I've just followed the steps!
What I can't find is this;
If I go back to the Stock ROM and updates are offered OTA, if I accept, will this, not only bring me back to 2.3.5 with Sense 3.0, but also change my bootloader back to 2.00.0002 Locked and S-ON ?
Unfortunately it will be *RELOCKED* and S-ON

What he said. If you wanted to remain "locked" and not "relocked" - you should have avoided unlocking the bootloader, and should have used temp-root for misc_version.
Ok, what are the inplications of being 'RE-LOCKED'
Like CM9, but get the feeling development stalled, also certain apps won't work Nat West being one, though I suspect that is to do with their development.
Thinking about going back to Stock. If I do this via OTA, my bootloader will be upgraded back to 2.00.0002, 'RE-LOCKED' and S-ON, then wait for official OTA upgrade to ICS, which seems not to be happening as per HTC announcements. Even then I may have issues with apps that haven't been coded to deal with it.
If I am 'RE-LOCKED' can I not use htcDev again, or am I stuck with the Official bootloader etc and unable to load other ROMS, or can I just repeat the processes I have been through already?
I have also been reading about unlocking with an XTC Clip, where would I get this done, Is this a better solution? etc etc..
No issues with RELOCKED except that your warranty is gone.
If you have no warranty you can go for XTC Clip, since permanent S-OFF will give you more freedom in terms of modifications. Personally I consider flashing boot.img separately each time as annoying.
As per the unlock again, it should be possible, but I am not sure if this can be done by a fastboot command or the unlock token has to be flashed again.

When I unlocked mine I remember reading somewhere that the token would need to be used again if the phone was re locked. So I kept it just in case

About unlock bootloader with htcdev

Hey man, before S-OFF, why we should do unlock bootloader via htcdev? (my hboot is 1.27.000)
What is the purpose to do that?
Can you explain this for me?
Thanks..
Sent from my HTC Sensation XE with Beats Audio Z715e using xda premium
the first version of doing S-OFF requires htcdev unlock but the second one does not require
if you do not want to use htcdev unlock method for doing S-OFF method after see this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1661631
he was refering more to the purpose of HTC Dev unlocking i guess
this is what i found but it is outdated (2009) dunno whether something has changed or not, so maby some nerds can explain further for him

OK, about sixteen million posts have been flying back and forth about what you can do with root, can't do, what S-OFF is, is not... So I'm going to try to clear it all up for you, OK?
ROOT means you have full control over the OS. From the OS, you can write to the recovery partition. Without root, the only way to write recovery is through hboot, which will only let you flash a custom recovery if you have S-OFF. But even with S-ON, you can write recovery from the OS if you have root. Then, with a custom recovery, you can write the hboot with an engineering bootloader, which has S-OFF. This way, you get S-OFF without a warranty-voiding watermark.
S-OFF means you can flash a custom recovery or ROM from hboot. Things you could already do with root, except that it's hard to get root while S-ON. But if you get it, you're set.
HTC says they'll ship an update which sets S-OFF, and then we're set, except their update will almost assuredly drop a watermark and void the warranty.
ANALOGY: Say the phone is a fortress, and you're trying to get in. S-ON means the gate is shut. If you root it with S-ON, you do it with an exploit, so you find a weak spot in the wall and pack it full of C4 and BOOM, you're in. S-OFF means they opened the gate from the inside, and you just walked in. Either way (S-OFF or root) you're in.
SUMMARY: With S-OFF, you get everything. With root, you get everything. End of story.
Final comment: rooting with S-ON means you used an exploit. Exploits are bad!! But HTC is forcing us to resort to such brutish, nasty means (blowing up walls to the fortress) because they locked the gate before selling us the place. We have a right to get inside, but they aren't opening the gate, so we have to get in some other way. Remember, if you can blow up the wall and walk in, a malicious program can do so too. Exploits are bad, and HTC should patch them. But let's get some legitimate use out of them first, ehhh?

[Q] s-off / supercid

so i managed to solve my recovery problem. i finally got twrp 2712 onto my device.
bootloader is unlocked
recovery on
superuser on..
hboot 2.15 s-on
i dont remember dealing with supercid when i rooted my old htc incredible.. from what im reading it allows us to use other carrier roms on the device?? im on tmobile and comfortable with that.. is modifying the CID actually necessary? im not planning on receiving any ota's n such.. just want the ability to flash radio's if need be and roms.. If i can skip CId and go to s-off that'd be fine with me, unless its needed for something else.. Will Ibe able to s-off without CID modified? cracking this ****er has been a little bit more difficult the past few phones ive had to do.. thanks much for the help..
As a noob, I installed CM 11 in February without s-off or super-cid (was too afraid to brick my phone). CM works great without s-off, but you need to flash boot.IMG on every update via fastboot.
I did s-off with rumrunner recently without Super-CID. Read my post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=56185478<br/>
so in moonshine i was getting nowhere.. i had no inclination that the Yes/No were case sensitive to be executed....
Currently in test 3, mhy 7th row of **********..
