Debating on which Rom to use. - HTC Sensation

I have just finished my first root ever yesterday. My phone is Sensation 4G, I have successfully rooted.
Today I have been trying out custom Roms to see which one should I use. I don't plan change Roms often so I want to choose a good stable one. I'm debating on Elegancia, ViperS, and ARHD. I didn't choose the other Roms because either the Roms are not good enough compared to these or it still in progress updating such as CM10.
First I like to point out that I kinda hate sense 4.0 after trying it out the first time. Most of the features on sense 4.0 is indeed nicer and smoother than sense 3.5. But you know like when you scrolling and can't scroll no more, but still try to scroll, the boxes will split with black gaps. I really hat that. Also the home screen, you can't keep sliding left or right. Don't know how to explain this, but like on sense 3.5 you can keep sliding left or right and eventually you will be back at the main home screen, but on sense 4.0 you can only slid left or right about 3 times then you will have to slide the other direction. So far these are the 2 features that I hate in sense 4.0. But if there is a awesome Rom that I very like and it only has Sense 4.0 I can live with that.
Now, for the discussion of the three Roms. ARHD, I very like it, I'd say that it very easy to use, not complicated, but not much tweaks to it. ViperS, I like how it includes many sound equalizers such as xloud, beats audio, srs, etc. and the Rom is pretty much complete with no bugs except for one that I don't care about. It has lots of tweaks and lots of ways to customize your phone. I know some people love to have so many ways to customize, but I think that ViperS has gone kinda too far in customization. I mean most people are not gonna use that much tweaks and customization. That is the one thing I don't like about ViperS. Lastly Elegancia, which has medium customization, not too much, not too small, I like it. It features are good, love the sound tweaks and sound improvement. But kinda has some few bugs and some problems.
So, yeah, I'm kinda stuck at which Roms to use. If possible, could some one suggest me which Rom to use. Or, if anyone has the solution to fix the feature on sense 4.0 that I don't like, I would appreciate it and will love sense 4.0. Thanks.

Run lighting sense 4 you will love the Rom.

Could you give me a link to it? I've searched Google and the Forum, couldn't find any lightning sense 4 Rom.

Elegancia and ARHD are terrific. I'm with you on the sense 4. Can't put my finger on it, but I like it a lot less than 3.6.
One thing I would recommend is to not jump ships to soon. You pointed out you rooted your phone yesterday and already switching many roms. Flashing is a good sport, I agree, but give each rom a couple.of day to 'grow on ya'. You might be suprised in the end
Please note that some performance issues you may encounter, could be fixed by a custom kernel. There's no one kernel (or settings) to rule them all, as each of us uses the phone in a different manner. As such, i would not disregard a rom over performance issues right a way.

That's a very good point. I'm gonna try each rom few days before really deciding which one I should use.

There is an Option called infinite Rolling, if you tick it, you have this feature again.
Its a venom-tweak

I HIGHLY recommend you try out SEVERAL different roms before you make your decision on which you want as your daily Rom . What I like, or what others like might not be right for you so don't limit yourself! Try out SEVERAL then make and form your OWN opinion. I use lightning I really like it, however you need to discover what YOU like and what suits YOUR needs. So try out many then make a choice. Don't forget to do a nandroid backup BEFORE flashing to be safe! Have fun and shop around. We are lucky to have so many great roms available to us and the experimentation is the fun part . Remember its ALWAYS best to form your own opinion on things. Happy flashing

Thanks for the Tip! I'm gonna start flashing different Roms and stay with each Rom about 3-4 days then record what I like and dislike, then moving on to other Roms. I hope I can find one that is perfect for me.

how do you choose a rom?

all rom's on xda are cool!ยจ
One thing that I did when I first started choosing which rom to put on my Sensation was ask myself a few questions:
1) Do I want the phone to feel the same as it does now or be drastically different? (ie keep Sense [same as stock], no Sense, AOSP [Android Open Source Project] or MIUI)
2) Do I want to use a very popular rom or go with a much smaller, lesser known rom?
3) Am I T-Mobile and plan on using Wifi calling?
4) Which looks the way I want to have it look? (ie Themes, extra addons, etc)
5) Do I want something stable or something cutting edge?
6) A rom which has just been released in its first version or a rom that is on version 3 with 25 previous updates?
Asking myself those questions helped narrow things down for me.
The other thing I would suggest is try a few. Look and find a few that use the same firmware version as you are currently on (so you don't have to risk flashing back and forth between firmware versions). Download them and try them for a few hours (or a day) at a time and see what you think. The first time I "caught the romming bug" when I first flashed I chose ARHD because it was popular, stable, and very low risk. Right away I flashed several others such as InsertCoin, CoreDroid, Virtuous, etc and each had things I liked that I now use to determine what I want.
Ultimately for me, I use mine as a phone for texting and phone calls. I decided after trying many that I wanted it to be a popular rom that was reliable with no problems major problems.
I hope those questions help you out a little as you start making your decisions.

I want whatever's closest to AOSP/CM9, but with everything working and running quickly. The only answer for that is the latest Hyper Nonsense.
there are two major categories of roms here, the ones with sense and the ones without sense. i tried pretty much all of the roms and i can recommend you virtous inquisition when you prefer a senseless rom close to aosp (android open source project; stock android) or the insertcoin rom when you like sense and the sense apps / widgets. (i currently use insertcoin and it is frequently updated, offers an amazing battery life and a very fast and stable performance. same for virtuous inquisition)
Well here are some preferences of mine...Perhaps you can narrow down three or four first choices.
Well I would not know the difference between sense based and not right now, so probably should aim to get close to it and slowly experiment outwards...
I want completely stable, the xe is fast enough so don't need faster (for now) but I do want themes capability. I like a very personalized interface. And ideally would rather make my own, but doubt I could without software for that like I had on my K77i.
I don't particularly care about popular, but I suppose popular does indicate stability and or other major benefits. I would not risk a new ROM I think.
I use mine, for everything, much more than calls and texts, and would use it to read a lot. So in that sense I do need low power consumption. Movies mostly at night with lowest brightness, but some times videos during the day too, such as exercise programs...
I hope not to catch a romming bug, I have had the phone only a few days and it's still not got all I want organized into it...It takes a lot of effort to set thing up right, at least for me, so I don't want to do that every couple of weeks...Mind you when I have the apps I want and calendar set up and what not I suppose that won't be so hard.

if you're going for the ics aosp feel then you should try both hypernonsense and virtuous inquisition and then decide which one you want to keep
as someone already stated - you should ask yourself what do you really need and it should be easy then...
for instance i need a stable room, ics looks, everything working and as few system apps as possible(only those which are required for a rom to function properly),no live wallpapers,no unnecesary ringtones and simillar so i chose hypernonsense

HyperNonSense is everything Virtuous Inquisition is, but without all of the glitches and with significantly increased speed and fluidity.

So the actual CM9 builds aren't doing it for ya are they?
When choosing a ROM I typically look at the bug list first to see if there are any show stoppers then its on to the comments posted to see what the general consensus of the ROM is.
Really though, I do a lot of sampling to get a feel for what ROMs I like best and narrow it down to just a few then flash between them depending on mood really and whether or not I feel like running AOSP or Sense based.
It looks like I am going to go with hyper nonsense first to see how that pans out.
I have to say though, I have read the guide three times through and skimmed another dozen times, and honestly it's a little hard to follow for a noob like myself. Are there are any other versions of the guide to do all this?

This guide is one of the best ones I've seen (it is specific for arhd but steps are basically the same for all roms with ics base):

It.is scary at first bit once you do it once it becomes a lot easier. Just take your time the first time, double check you've got the correct files, and then take a deep breath. LOTS of people have done it and I'm sure you'll be just fine.

Apparently that is a very god guide, flashed with success, though I am having troubles with it, not aside from the fact that Titanium has been giving me issue hanging lots on certain installs, and now certain games crash upon loading past the main screen. and other games I now have touch issues, randomly it seems as it seems to freeze control for a few seconds.
ANd I am right in understanding now that my firmware is upto date I ca flash any ICS based rom?
I think it was the firmware issue that I missed in the hypernonsense rom thread, and that is why it banjaxed things to bits...
I am still looking at other roms bbig time like, I want go launcher as my base and I think the ICS base takes up far far too much space, I am getting lag with ARHD and not even all of my things are back in place.
The other issue I have is now I need to clean up my phone, 16gb card and I have barely 2gb left for all the different back ups...I only have 4gb or so in my documents folder which is where I keep nearly everything from pictures, music, videos and ebooks etc...
I think it will be easy enough to clean up some things, But for those apps that persistently bother me, Is there a good clean up tool, for destroying apps, plus data???Preferably a super user app with batch automation???

Hi guys,
My wife is getting a Sony Z, and giving me her old HTC Sensation Z710e. Ofcourse I will be giving it a custom rom asap! Already ordered a new 1800mah battery and a new digitizer screen, but now I have to choose which custom rom to put on it...
Can you guys help me choose?
My current phone is a Sony Xperia X10 mini, and i love it to bits! I'd love a little bit of the same user experience on the sensation
What I would like:
good battery life (new battery)
good camera (?)
no useless apps (some sort of light rom?)
I like the look and feel of a stock android phone (so AOSP based rom?)
if needed, I would like the phone to perform VERY good (performance on demand, tunable kernel?)
I'm thinking of the Sultan Kernel with Hyper Nonsense ROM, would you guys agree?

Wow you are spot on!
I thought of recommending you cm10.1 kang or something.. But the good camera won't be a pass in this (hands down sense 3.6 camera is the best).. So your choice is perfect except you'll miss the latest version of android (jellybean)
Btw you should use sultans sense kernel as hyper non sense is still sense based but 99% sense stuff removed

Should I mod my Sensation?

A few weeks ago I received the ICS update per my HTC. It's brand Vodafone, so with a lot of useless things, but it works very well (some delay sometimes).
If I mod my Sensation with some custom roms, will it be more stable, fast and other things like that or the improvements would be useless?
Thanks!
Will be faster, with less (well, none) Voda crapware.
It changed my life ^^
No seriously when you start to flash rom it's dangerous because you can become addicted to that and you'll start to flash every rom to find the fastest rom.
If you don't want to try all them:
-ARHD if you like sense interface,or CM9.
Bottom line - it will be better than stock
Should you mod? In short, yes.
Sent from my Sensation 4G using XDA
In nearly every case, with all the Android phones I've owned, modding them with a custom ROM has made them better. What you mode with will depend on what you want. Lots of ROMs have one version or another of Sense. One of the really good ones is RevolutionHD, which I used for some time. Fast, responsive, great battery life, no chuff.
However, after I while I realized that I want to go back to the minimalist approach, so I returned to Cyanogenmod, without Sense (Sense is pretty, but a major resource hog, IMHO). You could go with the "pure" CM9 nightlies which are rock stable. Or you could look at OpenSensation, which is built on CM9 but has a few tweaks not yet merged into the nightly builds yet. Also rock solid and stable.
Make sure, whichever way you go, to follow the modding instructions for the ROM, since they vary from one dev/builder to another. The Development topic has all the different ROM threads and all the guidance you need.
Definitely yes.
I got a custom ROM because ICS hasn't been released in my location yet, but when I got a custom GB ROM I noticed how much faster and stable it was. And now there's no way I'm ever going back to stock.
I'm using Android Revolution HD 6.6.7 now.

But a device like that, with a custom rom, become another phone.
The sensation is already a high performance phone (not like the Galaxy S3, but...), that's why I asked, and i've already got the answers
BTW, I don't want to try all the rom on earth CM9 is cool, i like the style of the lockscreen. Anoter rom with sense 4.0?

It will be a lot faster, the battery life will increase, more responsive and I like the GUI for stock ICS better than sense. Also, you will have better drivers (hopefully) so it's performance in games will increase.
Do it if you're confident enough to to reap the benefits mentioned above.
If you're not confident then leave it.
YES! You will LOVE it! It's so wonderful to have so Many choices of different Roms! I love trying new ones out but I seem to always come back to my favorite ! Try out the Roms and find your favorite! It is so much more stable then stock. You will be surprised! No force closes, or shutdowns like with stock! It's also very addicting , you will be like, what do I want to try today! Rooting is truely freeing yourself. You will finally have the ability to make your device your own! It's awesome! If there is something you don't like, you just change it! Recommendations for ROM on Sensation

I've been using AndroidRevolution ever since I've bought the phone and I want to change over to something new.
Any suggestions? Having no sense doesn't bother me since I feel it chews a lot of memory on the phone.
Not sure what other roms are popular on the sensation

Hi,
Go HERE
Look for a thread that starts with [ROM] ,then check the views and replies...
RC1 of the cyanogenmod 9 is just released for the sensation. If you don't want sense and ice cream sandwich I would reccomend to use that one
The Best ROM I ever tried is Aokp eye candy it lives up to its name! Its different. It has tons of customization you can do! It even has ROM control. You can set your cpu profiles and even adjust colors! It comes with the newest beats where you can set profiles for the sound too! Other roms come with beats but I was never able to set profiles or adjust it infact I never even saw anything to do with beats other than a splash screen. This ROM is really different. Looks different, behaves different, is different. only thing I didn't like was the keyboard so I switches it out with a swipe keyboard from playstore. I really like swipe. Problem solved. This ROM is beautiful down to the phone dialer, to incomming calls expect something different! I feel in love with Aokp the first time I used it. Everyone is different and thats why there are different Roms to
Fit different tastes so try a few out and see what you like. But give this a try for sure and see for yourself what im talking about. i do think its a wonderfully different beautifully custom Rom. But you need to try several out and find what's right for you! Best of luck. Its best to try many so you can expirence different things. They all are great, its a matter of personal taste. Happy flashing and do give aokp eye candy a try. Its truely amazing! It took me awhile before I tried it and I wish I found it sooner! Just updated last night to the newest version 2.6. All I can say is its awesome! Find the ROM that suits you. Again please try out several so you can see what's avaiable. Also its sense less! Aroma installer, and the customization is incredible you really have to try it! I think you will love it! I know I do!

Yet another thread which has resorted to comparing ROM's. how many times do you guys need to hear it from devs, DONT compare roms, it is rude and offensive to devs.
To the OP, the only advise I will give is this, the only way which you will find the best ROM for you is to try them yourself because whats best for someone else might not be best for you, so experiment and try out different ROM's and see which one you like best.

Best ROM in your opinion

What rom is best for you and why? Is it fast, stable, and good looking? Thanks for your replies

Picking a Rom is a personal thing .what's best for me might not be best for your needs.I highly highly recommend you try out SEVERAL different roms for yourself and then make your choice for your daily Rom! That's the fun part! I've probably tried almost all the ics roms available! See what suits you're needs and style! We are lucky to have such wonderful developers to give us many different choices! So instead of asking what's best in others opinions, see what's best in YOUR opinion! Each Rom has a area that tells you what's working and what isn't, they are very up front about that so read that area, decide what you want, try out SEVERAL different ones then make your OWN choice! For me I really like the lightning Rom. However it might not be for you! So have fun and experiment with different things and form your own opinion. Best wishes and I genuinely hope this helps you out. Happy flashing!

the best ROM is the one that comes when you buy your phone, STOCK. But when you want something customized for your needs, you gotta try those available ROM. for me so far, i have Insert Coin for sense 4 in my phone always also the viper 1.1.0 but I'm still testing other ROM. What counts for when it comes to ROM is performance first then the looks. :good:
Enjoy Hunting :highfive:
I'd agree with trying the custom ROMs and work out what fits best. Like a try before you buy session.
REMEMBER, take Nandroid backups at every opportunity so you can revert to a previous ROM easily. That's probably the most important aspect.
Yep, take a few for a spin! I went from awesome Virtuous to awesome Lightning! Happy Flashing!
Communisation
Lighting
I agree there are just too many ROMS to try them all. But there are also way too many threads of this sort. For all those wondering which ROMS are good here are my recommendations-
ARHD or InsertCoin if you want closest to stock Sense 3.6 with preference to ARHD cos its updated more.
Elegancia Sense 3.6 if you want a tweaked version. I adore this ROM. Themed version available.
ViperS ROM if you want an extremely flexible Sense 4.0 experience. Elegancia 4.0 if you want a themed Sense 4.
OpenSensation for AOSP.
BerserkMode if you want Sense parts with AOSP speed and smoothness. It's probably better than Virtuous Inquisition now thanks to updates and improvements.
MIUI if that's your taste. There are about 3 or 4 threads. I'm personally waiting for the AOSP version update.
New Roms that may be worth a try- Lightning, TRAD Sensation (both Sense 4)
ROMS that you absolutely HAVE to cultivate to your own taste (for purists)- the hyper roms. props to Splder for carrying on Kristofs work.
Others- CM10 by Bruce if you're adventurous and don't mind temporarily sactificing your camera.
Personally I'd start with (Elegancia 3.6 Stock/themed is upto you) its amazing.. ViperS and BerserkMode of of course CM9. After that you have a pretty decent experience by which to judge other Roms. Happy Flashing! Hope this helped you and any others with the same question.

Paranoid Android! Hands down!
The ability to put your HTC into tablet mode is wonderful. As is the ability to custom choose the DPI for each individual app on your phone. After using Gmail in tablet mode I never want to go back to the preschool-like interface Gmail uses by default for phones. And with all the themes available for CyanogenMod you can REALLY customize the look and feel of every visual aspect of your phone's UI. I held out for a LONG time, I thought Sense was "pretty" and the way to go. But I've found ROMS based on AOSP/AOKP/CM run circles around Sense performance wise. Sense is a HOG for resources plan and simple. Install Apex launcher in Paranoid Android and it's quite close to perfect. Fast, themeable, visually pleasing, and the ability to take advantage of the fact your Sensation has an HD display.
That said, if you're still a sense holdout, the Viper ROM wipes the table with pretty much all other Sense based ROMS (though Daemon looks a bit promising).
For a STABLE ICS AOKP ROM, I like the EyeCandy ROM. (I boot into this restore when I need to use the camera as camera isn't functioning in JellyBean yet)
*edit*
Unlike a lot of other posters, I pretty much have tried EVERY ROM available for the Sensation. I have a tech addiction!
After a while the Sense 4.0 ROMS all start looking the same, except for the truly innovate ones that stand out from the pack like Viper, Daemon, Lightning, and RMS Blue Sense.
I tried ARHD, but once I found there were Sense 4.0 ROMS for my Sensation, I never looked back, never bothered trying another 3.6 ROM/ Sense 3.6 just seemed outdated to me at that point.
I prefer AOKP-based ROMS to CM as AOKP lets you tweak a heck of a lot more of the UI as well as system performance tweaks.
And I hate MIUI with a passion. Stay far far away from MIUI unless you really enjoy giving yourself a headache.

Okay thanks. Is there one that has everything working?

You can look in the change logs of the roms and they will tell you EXACTLY what is working and what's not.the developers are very open about that. Each Rom has a area what tells you EXACTLY what is working. So there are no surprises. Most roms have most everything working . They will tell you what's not working on page one. Around the change logs. Always look at that first then you will not have any surprises if something is not working. I really hope this helps you out. So if you find a Rom your interested in just read that area and it will clearly tell you what to expect. Best wishes.

Currently 1.9.5a .. I've used 1.92 as well as 1.4 in the past.
I know a lot of people will probably say arhd because it has been the most popular rom. However, my Sensation kept crashing/randomly turning off with it. The only rom that hasn't caused me too many problems is InsertCoin and OrDroid. I have been using OrDroid for several months now and couldn't be happier. I will probably stick to OrDroid for a while.

Which custom Sense 4.0 ROM should I install?

Hi XDAians
I used HTC One X of a friend, and I am thinking to have Sense 4.0 on my HTC Sensation. It's running stock ICS ROM.
So please suggest me which custom ROM should I install? That is most bug free and good in performance.
I appreciate your responses.
Hi there, I highly suggest trying out SEVERAL different roms for yourself to form your own opinion. I like lightning Rom because its proven to be fast smooth and very STABLE! But it all depends on your personal likes and goals. You will get all sorts of different opinions with this question. I suggest you read each developers change logs As they are very up front about what is working and what is not. There are many different roms for different tastes and goals. I like sense 4 personally this is why I like lightning. I like to have stability and speed and customization. Lightning Rom gives me all that. But opnions differ. This is why It's always best to try them out for yourself! Remember to make nandroid back ups so you can restore your current Rom without problem if you don't like a Rom or it doesn't suit your needs. This is the fun part! Trust me don't just take sometimes word you MUST try for yourself! We all are different and its wonderful that the developers have given us so many great choices in Roms so go shopping and try out to see what you like best ! With my Rom it has the newest camera and over the air updates which makes it so nice. Your alerted when there is a new update or mod available which is a wonderful feature! Not every one has the time to check for updates so this makes this feature so nice. When there is a update you don't have to download from your computer you do it all on your device. It is very convenient . But I still highly recommend you trying out SEVERAL and see which Rom suits you the best. I hope I've helped! Happy flashing!

The Viper ROM, imho feels the most complete of any sense 4.0 ROM for the HTC Sensation. There's so many UI and performance settings that Viper allows you tweak that other Sense 4.0 ROMS just don't have.
That said there are a few other decent Sens 4.0 ROMs worth trying. The SmartDroid Daemon is a close second, RMS Blue Sense on the list for looking the most visually pleasing, and some people like the new LIghtningROM. I'd say try out all 4, Start with Viper, use it as a basis of comparison against the others. Back each ROM so you can restore it later should you want to go back to it. I've tried all the Sense 4.0 ROMs out there for the Sensation, most of them are indistinguishable from each other, these are the four that really stand out from the crowd.
realsis thanks for an insight and motivating me to flash my phone. I am looking for scroll speed and efficiency with the white interface of Sense 4.0. I have started my hunt and reading changelogs. I hope I will get some thing that I want.
Your very welcome! I'm sure you will find the right Rom ! This is the fun part! The experimenting! have fun and remember to do your backups!

Installing ROM
Hi Guys!! I'm new to this site and I am new to android too since i used to own a i-device (I know...mistake...i had to try the enemy first before judging it!) Anyway, I have some experience with Jailbreaking and unlocking and stuff but I am new to rooting. I got an HTC Sensation (factory unlocked) just like the you guys and I wanted to install the Team Venom's ROM on my device. So I was wondering, how harder is it to root your device compared to Jailbreaking for instance? Cuz my phone is still on warranty and i dont feel like messing it up already! Thank you very much for your support!!!
I personally prefer Viper. It offers a lot of customization options, and is quite fast too.
@sches741: It's different for each android phone. It isn't super hard on the Sensation, but I think jailbreaking is easier (I have an iPod).
