Should I mod my Sensation? - HTC Sensation

A few weeks ago I received the ICS update per my HTC. It's brand Vodafone, so with a lot of useless things, but it works very well (some delay sometimes).
If I mod my Sensation with some custom roms, will it be more stable, fast and other things like that or the improvements would be useless?
Thanks!

Will be faster, with less (well, none) Voda crapware.

It changed my life ^^
No seriously when you start to flash rom it's dangerous because you can become addicted to that and you'll start to flash every rom to find the fastest rom.
If you don't want to try all them:
-ARHD if you like sense interface,or CM9.

Bottom line - it will be better than stock

Should you mod? In short, yes.

In nearly every case, with all the Android phones I've owned, modding them with a custom ROM has made them better. What you mode with will depend on what you want. Lots of ROMs have one version or another of Sense. One of the really good ones is RevolutionHD, which I used for some time. Fast, responsive, great battery life, no chuff.
However, after I while I realized that I want to go back to the minimalist approach, so I returned to Cyanogenmod, without Sense (Sense is pretty, but a major resource hog, IMHO). You could go with the "pure" CM9 nightlies which are rock stable. Or you could look at OpenSensation, which is built on CM9 but has a few tweaks not yet merged into the nightly builds yet. Also rock solid and stable.
Make sure, whichever way you go, to follow the modding instructions for the ROM, since they vary from one dev/builder to another. The Development topic has all the different ROM threads and all the guidance you need.

Definitely yes.
I got a custom ROM because ICS hasn't been released in my location yet, but when I got a custom GB ROM I noticed how much faster and stable it was. And now there's no way I'm ever going back to stock.
I'm using Android Revolution HD 6.6.7 now.

I flashed already a lot of rom on my LG P500
But a device like that, with a custom rom, become another phone.
The sensation is already a high performance phone (not like the Galaxy S3, but...), that's why I asked, and i've already got the answers
BTW, I don't want to try all the rom on earth CM9 is cool, i like the style of the lockscreen. Anoter rom with sense 4.0?

Thanks! I'll try one of these..

It will be a lot faster, the battery life will increase, more responsive and I like the GUI for stock ICS better than sense. Also, you will have better drivers (hopefully) so it's performance in games will increase.

Do it if you're confident enough to to reap the benefits mentioned above.
If you're not confident then leave it.

YES! You will LOVE it! It's so wonderful to have so Many choices of different Roms! I love trying new ones out but I seem to always come back to my favorite ! Try out the Roms and find your favorite! It is so much more stable then stock. You will be surprised! No force closes, or shutdowns like with stock! It's also very addicting , you will be like, what do I want to try today! Rooting is truely freeing yourself. You will finally have the ability to make your device your own! It's awesome! If there is something you don't like, you just change it! I can honestly say, I don't regret rooting for a second! You will LOVE it! Best of luck.

I'll do it tonight! I read something but I have to find a guide to S-OFF for ICS. I saw a method with a manual trick with a copper wire but i don't know if it reliable!

Just that way is reliable, and if you're on ICS it's the only way to get S-OFF.

You'll only fry your phone if the bit of wire you're using is connected to the mains

Hey.

However, to make things a little easy, here is the tool that I made: http://tinyurl.com/KGSTool

Thanks for all the tips, I've already done it with the wire trick!
Now i have install a recovery (4EXTRecovery is the best, right?), obtain root and superCID, right? In this order?

What Rom should I use? What's the hands down general best?

I am currently using Cyanogen Mod 7 and realizing that I don't like it @ all. The camera is pretty much ****. And it cuts out sound a lot. And I'm kinda feining to go back to sense. So i wanna know if there are any good and worthy Sense 3.5 2.3.5 roms or a 100% AOSP rom, Fast, battery efficient, themed would be nice, over clocked, and all the other goodies.

Me, too. But I'm finding 4.1.3 a bit laggy. Wondering if Insertcoin would be better, and I'm trying to find out what the differences are, but info seems scarce. The advice seems to be: "test it and see for yourself".
like eddyOS said, its subjective.
you need to try out the different roms to find what you like.
i tried practically all the roms, almost all gave me this same problem (mobile internet not working and bad signals) until i found a few and went on trying and testing it and got the one that suits me.
What works for me may not work for you.... and besides, though we have same phone, our experience with the ROMs here is unique with each other...
if you ask me, my bet would be Baad (IC), Mike (ARHD), and Ctdroid's work (no offense to other devs) .... Reason? i dont have problems migrating back and forth with those ROM's + great support from the respective teams... If you want SENSEless, check Melvin and Xboarder56's work...

And because YOU think stock android is "****ty and boring" as quoted in another post of yours, that means it is? Pot calling the kettle black bro.
No, just cause I call it **** doesn't mean I'm right. I've never said I am. BUT I'm saying you're wrong to call a ROM 'the best' as there's no such thing. The 'best' ROM is whatever the user thinks it is.
I use MY own ROM the I'VE cooked as, for me, it's the best as it doesn't EXACTLY what I want it to.
All I'm trying to get across is the OP is going to have to try different ROMs and make up their own mind. I'd say that it's worth trying CM7 but I cannot live without the Sense widgets and the general smoothness of Sense. CM7 just isn't as nice in MY eyes, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder
---------- Post added at 04:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:55 PM ----------
Also meant to add, once CM7 is out of alpha/beta I'll probably give it a go again and see if it's better than last time I used it. I'm quite looking forward to a proper, official MIUI release as I quite like that
CM7 should be good once it actually comes out of Alpha...I hope. Loved it on my N1. Still having problems though...but it is alpha.

Ive been flashing since the first roms were around on the G1. I like to check out every rom offered for my phone and as of now im back on sense (just like the widgets). But like anyone will tell you there is no "best" updates from all our great devs come out daily.
After testing a lot (if not all) roms on sensation, I found Synergy's latest r85 to be top dawg at the moment. Heres my setup, no problems at all so far its fast, stable, and battery life is great
Flashed in this order:
Rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1193089
Kernel (flashed recommended 1.2 and then cam fix right after): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1256668
Im on 10.14 radio cause it seems to give me best data/batter life, its also what synergy devs are using.
lemme kno what you think
u have to find it out by your own..
but i really recommend S3N5EaY v1.6.0 - 2.3.5 / 3.5 sense..
i know CM7 - revolution hd and some others.. have to flash my phone 2128238 times a week lol ..
S3N5EaY is fully stable, fast and sensational of battery.
let me know what u thinkin about it
Well if cm7 alpha isn't floating your boat that's understandable. It isn't fully released yet anyway right? But if you want a fully operational sense rom that feels like a cm/aosp then you should try the beastrom-sv4. Everything works and it's light and snappy. Not as snappy as cm7Alpha 8 but then again it's sense base 2.3.5 now I believe. Just don't install the themes for it as they are not updated to the new base (still set for the 2.3.4).
Although I'm a fairly devoted Cyanogenmod user, I have to admit the Sense 3.5 based roms are quite snappy. Still not quite as snappy as Cyanogenmod but certainly an improvement over Sense 3.0.
I don't think there is a hang of a lot of difference between the roms though. Inspite of claims made by some that xyz ROM is the fastest, has the best battery life, or whatever I've never noticed a difference apart from the odd tweak here and there. These days if one dev comes up with something really cool it ends up in all the other roms within a week anyway. Each ROM does have it's own distinct favour though depending on who cooked it.

Wicked fast, extremely stable and lots of friendly support.
I am on InsertCoin at the moment, it is a great ROM. More or less stock, but with reasonable featers as Amaze camera.
LeeeDroid is also great, but it is a bit out of date, I hope Lee upgrades soon when he is back.

Is any one else disillusioned?

Yes, yes I know the benefits of ROM's but man there are really getting on my tits.
I am fed up of things not working, the 'phone locking up, for what some battery and performance improvements that I don't even notice in day to day use.
My DHD admittedly ran better with Lee's and Mikes ROM's, my Sensation ran better in stock and every ROM I have tried have so many issues it's unreal.

It may take a little patience, but it is definitely worth it on some of the ROMs. I have been sticking with Mike's ROMs and couldn't be happier. His latest 3.6.1 has been running flawless for me and many others. I guess you just have to find one you enjoy and keep looking back until it is completely daily stable.
Ops post is quite painful to read an I'm not even a dev, but I guess I understand where he is coming from. But op what you don't realize is that people who post roms go through a ton of work to get to where they are. Believe it or not but I'd go as far as to say that the devs for my phone (motorola milestone v1) know more about the phone than the group of developers from motorola.
Op, I'll dumb it down a little for you, if you need a stable phone stick with what it was when you pulled it out of the box. But if you wish to go a on an epic journey filled with ups and downs of situations where you'll sit there with a huge smile across your face, stick around, thank the devs for the gift they have given you, and if at all possible learn a thing or two while you enjoy your stay.

No such thing as a bug free ROM, not even stock
OP, try insert coin, a 2.3.4 version (latest is 2.5.5 ver2 w/ bricked kernel) its the best ive used to date, with frequent use, i get 1 day battery life, and with average-minimal use, i get 2 days battery life. no crashes, reboots or sense reloads, 200mb free ram (unless you use a custom theme).
while i would have agreed with the op when dev first started, this is no longer the case anymore. the devs have learned A LOT about this phone, and its builds and have only gotten so much better with time.
the main reason ppl come to XDA is so they CAN flash many, many roms to see what suits them. when i had my HD2 i was a certified flashaholic, new rom every 3 days to a week
with this fone ive settled down quite a bit, but when i new rom/dev comes along, i nand backup, flash the new rom, let it settle and then try it out for a few days and actually give it a chance.
Custom ROMs are fun because there are so many out there, and you can spend time with each one to determine which one fits your needs. If you're looking for a phone that is stable, just use the one that's been working the best for you and improvise, fixing what needs to be fixed so that your phone can do what you require of it.
Using Android Revolution HD 3.6.2 and its stable for me, had more issues with stock ROM.

[Q] Should I Root?

Thinking about rooting my phone but I'm not sure if I should.
I bought my phone outside the US, my service provider is in Asia (Taiwan).
My phone is HTC Sensation Z710e.
I want to root because:
- I want to have access to the US Market, not my current countries; I want to access certain apps that aren't available outside the US.
- I want to upgrade to stock ICS when releases are more stable.
- I want to customize the look of my phone with things like CM or MIUI.
- I want to improve battery life (if possible).
I'm scared to root because:
- I don't understand ANY of the "rooting vocabulary" like s-off, kernel, rom, clockwork, radios, etc. Even the "noob" guides confuse me
- I don't want to ruin my phone.
- Because I'm in a different country I'm scared that I won't have service after rooting.
Right now my only experience with Android is using different launchers. I've tried around 10 but prefer GoLauncher because of the themes and widgets. I use my phone a lot and want more out of it. I love ICS! Not in love with Sense anymore.
What do you think I should do? Root or no.
Hey,
was not everyone in the beginning a noob?
To improve the battery life, you could underclock and undervolt the Cpu.
But this is just possible with another Kernel, like Faux oder Bricked.
S-off -> security off, the security off option allows you to write to the NAND,
a flash memory where the main parts of your phone are saved.
Kernel -> The Base Part of a Rom, includes the Drivers and so on.
Rom -> Like a Windows Version, there are different Roms like different Windows
Versions. A Rom is the whole Android on your phone.
Clockwork recovery -> the Recovery System you can install after Rooting, lets you install you own Roms, Updates etc. With another recovery than the Stock, you cant install OTA Updates, but you can update the same with a .zip file with the clockwork recovery.
Radio.... dont know exactly, something that has to be there for communicating
with the network etc.
So, I would just Root, if you want to use another Rom. There arent as much ways of doing things with rooted phones as with another Rom.
the easy answer would have been yes lol
Hi guy's,
I'm glad you've posted this up as I'm in the same boat. I want to try and get more out of my phone as I have done with my PC. Some of the basic terminology isn't explained in laymans terms on here though (not that I could find anyway!) So thanks for clearing up those bits of information.
As for Rooting your phone. I used the How-To thread in this section and did it pretty easily. Only had a few issues but the guides help you through really well.
I'm now looking at a phone that's rooted, clockworked, S-Off and SuperCID'd but I haven't unlocked it yet.
I'm going to spend the next few days looking through the various threads on here to find out whether there is one preferred ROM that will get my phone running faster and smoother.
Hope you manage to get yours done as easily as I did. It's always worth having a play with these things... Especially if you back it all up so that if it does go wrong, you can just reset it like nothing ever happened.
I say, root! The costum roms from mike are excellent, better battery life etc..
Verstuurd van mijn HTC Sensation XE with Beats Audio met Tapatalk
It's easy to do, there's a lot of topics about it. Check noobsproof guide in Sensation Android Development. When you'll aknowledge basics you'll love huge range possibilities, roms, mods etc. And your Sensation will love u too
Thanks for the help. I might wait until CM9 releases or a perfect stock ICS ROM comes out.
So I will root, just waiting for those things.
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App
You can root without getting a new ROM, which is what I recently did. It lets you do things like run setCPU to underclock (and get huge improvement on battery life), use Titanium Backup to remove pre-installed apps, etc.
Just follow steps 1, 2 and 3 on the guide (S-off, install Recovery, Root- takes awhile, but most of the time goes to waiting for the phone to do the work).
good question! im also about to ask this. 1 more question is is the CM 7 alpha for sensation are stable to use?? Planning to try root n put CM. =)
Is their a particular ROM that most people use? I'd like to get a little better battery life and make my Sensation run a bit quicker if possible.
Also, Is their anything around that can make your GPS more accurate and speed up data rates?
The ARHD roms seem to be quite popular including the newest ICS build. Wouldn't hurt to go around and test out a few others to see if they fit your need.
And yes, there are some current hotfixes out there if you are having trouble with your GPS.

Thanks Maverick. I'm not so much having issues with my GPS as wanting to boost it a little.
I use an app for recording my time on race tracks. It records things like the g-forces and the lap times as well as video and audio. The built in GPS is "okay" but I've heard a lot of people us an external GPS as it gives better data times ie. the built-in GPS = 5Hz compared to external GPS = 10Hz. I wondered if their would be some way of boosting the built in one so I don't need three things plugged into the car at once!
Are the ROMs as easy to flash and "un-flash" as the normal big updates I used to do every now and again on my HD2 etc?
Yeah, the Roms are pretty easy to install and remove if you don't like they way they work. As far as boosting the overall performance of the internal GPS.. I don't think there is any way to overclock that part of it. I could be wrong though.
Sounds good. I'll try and unlock it tomorrow and then try and install a rom or two. Looks like I'm going to try out the ARHD Rom first, and have a look at an overclock
I'll have a look around to see if theirs much that can be done to or with the built in GPS. It would be andy to get a bit better performance from it but I guess I can live with it until the next big thing comes along and takes my fancy
Hey,
I've haven't been on this forum for long.
I think you should definitively root. It takes almost no time at all to go through the noob guide and then in a couple of hours, if you really want to know about things like S-OFF, kernels, radios etc. you can check out the documentation online.
I've owned a HTC Desire before and I rooted that as well and flashed LeeDroid's custom ROM for the Desire. Now a friend is using the phone and she's most happy with it. It's a lot faster than the stock ROM for the Desire.
Right now I'm playing with an HTC Sesation. I've also been reticent on rooting it. The guide on the forum seemed a bit complicated and I didn't have the patience to go through every step, but it turned out to be a lot faster than I thought. The tool from Revolutionary disables the security and installs the bootloader and recovery with just one click. Than you would just flash any custom ROM, as they are all rooted and there you go.

First off: with Sense or without Sense does make a noticable difference because launchers and widgets differ a lot in battery usage.
With Sense:
In my case the unexpected winner of that comparison still is ARHD 5.0.2 with the new firmware flashed. It out-lives any other Sensation ROM by more than 40%.
Without Sense:
The differences were minimal.
If you don't want the risks of ICS which is still beta and comes with problems for many, MIUI.us was second best with the appropriate kernel. Since it's been more than two weeks since I tested MIUI and that one isn't stable either, I'm unwilling to advise you. You should ask in the thread.
In all of my comparisons I used JuiceDefender.
For battery life comparison you need to stick with a ROM for more than 24h and a few reboots.
I've tried LeeDroid, SensEay, Virtuous, all 3 ARHD, HyperSensation CM7, Miui.us, InsertCOIN.
hope this helps
So just putting the ARHD ROM on will also give me better battery life?
The main thing that worries me with ROM flashing is stability. I can't be without my phone for a day if I flash it then have problems while i'm at work. Are most of these roms etc stable when they are released? Is it mainly the overclocking and hardware mods that make it unstable?
Thanks for answering my questions... as you can see I'm a total N00B but you guys are helping me out loads and making me more confident to do it all

Picking a Rom is a personal thing .what's best for me might not be best for your needs.I highly highly recommend you try out SEVERAL different roms for yourself and then make your choice for your daily Rom! That's the fun part! I've probably tried almost all the ics roms available! See what suits you're needs and style! We are lucky to have such wonderful developers to give us many different choices! So instead of asking what's best in others opinions, see what's best in YOUR opinion! Each Rom has a area that tells you what's working and what isn't, they are very up front about that so read that area, decide what you want, try out SEVERAL different ones then make your OWN choice! For me I really like the lightning Rom. However it might not be for you! So have fun and experiment with different things and form your own opinion. Best wishes and I genuinely hope this helps you out. Happy flashing!

What counts for when it comes to ROM is performance first then the looks. :good:
Enjoy Hunting :highfive:
I'd agree with trying the custom ROMs and work out what fits best. Like a try before you buy session.
REMEMBER, take Nandroid backups at every opportunity so you can revert to a previous ROM easily. That's probably the most important aspect.
Yep, take a few for a spin! I went from awesome Virtuous to awesome Lightning! Happy Flashing!

Lighting
I agree there are just too many ROMS to try them all. But there are also way too many threads of this sort. For all those wondering which ROMS are good here are my recommendations-
ARHD or InsertCoin if you want closest to stock Sense 3.6 with preference to ARHD cos its updated more.
Elegancia Sense 3.6 if you want a tweaked version. I adore this ROM. Themed version available.
ViperS ROM if you want an extremely flexible Sense 4.0 experience. Elegancia 4.0 if you want a themed Sense 4.
OpenSensation for AOSP.
BerserkMode if you want Sense parts with AOSP speed and smoothness. It's probably better than Virtuous Inquisition now thanks to updates and improvements.
MIUI if that's your taste. There are about 3 or 4 threads. I'm personally waiting for the AOSP version update.
New Roms that may be worth a try- Lightning, TRAD Sensation (both Sense 4)
ROMS that you absolutely HAVE to cultivate to your own taste (for purists)- the hyper roms. props to Splder for carrying on Kristofs work.
Others- CM10 by Bruce if you're adventurous and don't mind temporarily sactificing your camera.
Personally I'd start with (Elegancia 3.6 Stock/themed is upto you) its amazing.. ViperS and BerserkMode of of course CM9. After that you have a pretty decent experience by which to judge other Roms. Happy Flashing! Hope this helped you and any others with the same question.

Paranoid Android! Hands down!
The ability to put your HTC into tablet mode is wonderful. As is the ability to custom choose the DPI for each individual app on your phone. After using Gmail in tablet mode I never want to go back to the preschool-like interface Gmail uses by default for phones. And with all the themes available for CyanogenMod you can REALLY customize the look and feel of every visual aspect of your phone's UI. I held out for a LONG time, I thought Sense was "pretty" and the way to go. But I've found ROMS based on AOSP/AOKP/CM run circles around Sense performance wise. Sense is a HOG for resources plan and simple. Install Apex launcher in Paranoid Android and it's quite close to perfect. Fast, themeable, visually pleasing, and the ability to take advantage of the fact your Sensation has an HD display.
That said, if you're still a sense holdout, the Viper ROM wipes the table with pretty much all other Sense based ROMS (though Daemon looks a bit promising).
For a STABLE ICS AOKP ROM, I like the EyeCandy ROM. (I boot into this restore when I need to use the camera as camera isn't functioning in JellyBean yet)
*edit*
Unlike a lot of other posters, I pretty much have tried EVERY ROM available for the Sensation. I have a tech addiction!
After a while the Sense 4.0 ROMS all start looking the same, except for the truly innovate ones that stand out from the pack like Viper, Daemon, Lightning, and RMS Blue Sense.
I tried ARHD, but once I found there were Sense 4.0 ROMS for my Sensation, I never looked back, never bothered trying another 3.6 ROM/ Sense 3.6 just seemed outdated to me at that point.
I prefer AOKP-based ROMS to CM as AOKP lets you tweak a heck of a lot more of the UI as well as system performance tweaks.
And I hate MIUI with a passion. Stay far far away from MIUI unless you really enjoy giving yourself a headache.

Okay thanks. Is there one that has everything working?

You can look in the change logs of the roms and they will tell you EXACTLY what is working and what's not.the developers are very open about that. Each Rom has a area what tells you EXACTLY what is working. So there are no surprises. Most roms have most everything working . They will tell you what's not working on page one. Around the change logs. Always look at that first then you will not have any surprises if something is not working. I really hope this helps you out. So if you find a Rom your interested in just read that area and it will clearly tell you what to expect. Best wishes.

Currently 1.9.5a .. I've used 1.92 as well as 1.4 in the past.
I know a lot of people will probably say arhd because it has been the most popular rom. However, my Sensation kept crashing/randomly turning off with it. The only rom that hasn't caused me too many problems is InsertCoin and OrDroid. I have been using OrDroid for several months now and couldn't be happier. I will probably stick to OrDroid for a while.

Which custom Sense 4.0 ROM should I install?

Hi XDAians
I used HTC One X of a friend, and I am thinking to have Sense 4.0 on my HTC Sensation. It's running stock ICS ROM.
So please suggest me which custom ROM should I install? That is most bug free and good in performance.
I appreciate your responses.
Hi there, I highly suggest trying out SEVERAL different roms for yourself to form your own opinion. I like lightning Rom because its proven to be fast smooth and very STABLE! But it all depends on your personal likes and goals. You will get all sorts of different opinions with this question. I suggest you read each developers change logs As they are very up front about what is working and what is not. There are many different roms for different tastes and goals. I like sense 4 personally this is why I like lightning. I like to have stability and speed and customization. Lightning Rom gives me all that. But opnions differ. This is why It's always best to try them out for yourself! Remember to make nandroid back ups so you can restore your current Rom without problem if you don't like a Rom or it doesn't suit your needs. This is the fun part! Trust me don't just take sometimes word you MUST try for yourself! We all are different and its wonderful that the developers have given us so many great choices in Roms so go shopping and try out to see what you like best ! With my Rom it has the newest camera and over the air updates which makes it so nice. Your alerted when there is a new update or mod available which is a wonderful feature! Not every one has the time to check for updates so this makes this feature so nice. When there is a update you don't have to download from your computer you do it all on your device. It is very convenient . But I still highly recommend you trying out SEVERAL and see which Rom suits you the best. I hope I've helped! Happy flashing!

The Viper ROM, imho feels the most complete of any sense 4.0 ROM for the HTC Sensation. There's so many UI and performance settings that Viper allows you tweak that other Sense 4.0 ROMS just don't have.
That said there are a few other decent Sens 4.0 ROMs worth trying. The SmartDroid Daemon is a close second, RMS Blue Sense on the list for looking the most visually pleasing, and some people like the new LIghtningROM. I'd say try out all 4, Start with Viper, use it as a basis of comparison against the others. Back each ROM so you can restore it later should you want to go back to it. I've tried all the Sense 4.0 ROMs out there for the Sensation, most of them are indistinguishable from each other, these are the four that really stand out from the crowd.
realsis thanks for an insight and motivating me to flash my phone. I am looking for scroll speed and efficiency with the white interface of Sense 4.0. I have started my hunt and reading changelogs. I hope I will get some thing that I want.
Your very welcome! I'm sure you will find the right Rom ! This is the fun part! The experimenting! have fun and remember to do your backups!

Installing ROM
Hi Guys!! I'm new to this site and I am new to android too since i used to own a i-device (I know...mistake...i had to try the enemy first before judging it!) Anyway, I have some experience with Jailbreaking and unlocking and stuff but I am new to rooting. I got an HTC Sensation (factory unlocked) just like the you guys and I wanted to install the Team Venom's ROM on my device. So I was wondering, how harder is it to root your device compared to Jailbreaking for instance? Cuz my phone is still on warranty and i dont feel like messing it up already! Thank you very much for your support!!!
I personally prefer Viper. It offers a lot of customization options, and is quite fast too.
@sches741: It's different for each android phone. It isn't super hard on the Sensation, but I think jailbreaking is easier (I have an iPod).
