Not taking away anything from the work Adam has done on this, we all appreciate it. But:
do you think Verizon had someone leak this after seeing everything they were trying to prevent was being accomplished with rooting and kexec?
No reason to keep getting bad publicity around this and lose customers that actually buy new phones becaus of it, right? It just makes sense, no?

I thought they said that an unsecured bootloader was leaked that helped do this.
http://rootzwiki.com/news/_/articles/general/verizons-sgs3-unlocked-thanks-to-leaked-unsecured-bootloader-r1054
The bootloader is from VRALE6. It's older than the first firmware (VRALEC) Samsung gave Verizon.

samsung leak?
I think that sammy didn't want to spend all that money making a developer version for verizon and instead sammy had someone leak the bootloader instead.
Ya I have a feeling it was from Samsung also.

I agree more with this statement. Samsung probably didn't want to lock it in the first place, gave it some time and then leaked it out and avoid more bad press.
If Verizon wanted good publicity... they'd just unlock it them self and soak it all in.

You're gong to need to use the heavy duty foil for this one.
That really wouldn't surprise me if Samsung leaked it. Figure all their other phones already have the unlocked bootloader, and even a number of non GS3s from samsung have an unlocked bootloader, they seem to enjoy freedom as much as we do. I feel like they were forced to lock it down because of the big red... they didn't really have much of a choice. It was probably "lock it down or we don't sell it" meaning they would miss sales from the biggest US carrier.
Also, I remember someone mentioning that Samsung sometimes comes to the devs on these forums for help, it was funny because the guy who wrote the article had mentioned how every minute the devs had to spend trying to unlock the bootloader is one more they could have spent helping sammy. Kinda makes sense they would leak it, and in all honesty, we make up such a small part of verizons sales, I don't think they'd really even care that much... at least most of us understand what we're doing before we flash.
It very well could have been samsung that leaked just enough to make the unlock happen. We will never know and its best to just enjoy it and not point any fingers. Dont forget it was our very smart devs and our great community of people that turned that silver into gold.

Or maybe they just got tired of people bothering their reps with questions about the bootloader... Haha.

I personally think Sammy handed over the keys and the DEV's made sure it would run. Sammy doesn't want any bad publicity for any reason right now with all the constant battles with the stupid fruit company. I am not taking away any credit towards the DEV's that made this all possible, I am EXTREMELY thankful that they did this for the entire community.
you crazy people all act like "Samsung" is behind this, like the Samsung executives gathered around in a meeting and decided how they would release the unlocked bootloader to take down evil Big Red.
a leak like this is just some low level employee that was just as annoyed as us about the bootloader who is probably gonna get fired for leaking it.
there's no conspiracy.

I want to make sure I'm understanding what's all been going on here the past few days:
A dev releases an alpha radio to the community, along with all the usual disclaimers, etc. (Name not used to protect the innocent).
People start flashing this new "alpha" radio.
Some people start to experience very odd issues which does not allow them to even get back to a stock state (like what worked with every other type of phone).
The dev becomes a little concerned - Since the dev released the radio to the community, he feels it is his duty to inform people that it may be a good idea to revert back to a non "alpha" radio release, because this alpha release may make you not be able to use your phone anymore - again this is an "alpha" release, so no telling what could be causing the issue, but since he is a respected member of the dev community, his reputation may be at stake. So he posts here on XDA.
Next thing you know...Pitchforks and torches.
Go figure.
There're pichforks and torches for jcase? Well I guessed I missed something.
Obviously it's not jcases fault, he couldn't predict that for whatever reason 1 in 20-50 phones would die for no reason.
Agree, JCase has had too long of a history being supportive and on the right side of the line and in this community to be at some fault. **** happens and accidents are unpredictable for a reason. Anyone that tries to roast him doesn't appreciate the work and effort these guys spend making our devices a little bit closer to heaven.
At least he warned us before 90% of the community had bricked phones.

Ya, it still amazes me that people are getting all mad and "demand" to know what, why , who, where, how, when, etc.
I'm just glad there are devs out there who can provide solutions, so that I don't have to try and create my own.
The Dev's Rock!
Yeah people need to understand the inherent risks in flashing things to their phones, even more so when its clearly stated that the leaked GB radio was an ALPHA release.
I have nothing but respect for devs who work hard to make our phones even better than what they already are.
Thanks!!!!
jcase is not to blame... it is the modders who run alpha software knowing it may brick their phones then they have to get mad at someone... rather than looking in the mirror.
Running CM7 AOSP - ThunderBolt using XDA Premium App
Yah I agree I mean isn't the whole rooting, custom rom an "at your own risk" anyway.. I don't get it but goes with half the crap going on these days.. No self responsibility. You flashed it you risked it..! WTF
I would really like to know why, I'm not asking for it though. I am just curious. Really I just want gb to be working safely again.
Jcase and the others have done nothing but provide excellent updates, service and everything else. I am truly impressed by their level of commitment. As others have mentioned in other threads... People get paid decent cash to do what jcase does for free. Thank you, truly.

Is Jcase really taking heat? I mean, come on people, we know going in that we can gank our phones by flashing unapproved stuff on them. We brick, we only have ourselves to blame, simple as that. I for one applaud Jcase for alerting us so quickly to the problem.

"Innocent " not guilty of crime or offense. These devs keep on giving so much to us and this is how we try to repay them by persecution ,instead of the being " behind you " approach we should stand side by side with them, and after all we all practice freewill by flashing.

I never knew who JCase was before the Thunderbolt, but I have to say he is a pretty cool dood, and it is awesome to see Devs getting leaks like he does. Never saw any of this with the Evo 4G. We never got to have new radios/roms of new firmware versions until after then had been out a week or two and devs had gotten a hold of them. Here we have them weeks if not months in advance, and I applaud him, and other devs for that.
And just think, they do this all without expecting anything.

Well I don’t agree that we cannot make a change. If you read a book like The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference , you will come to see that even though Samsung spend around 4 billion $ for marketing , the final say is in the hand of the consumers . Currently if you look around the s4 forum, the note 3 forum, and other forums around of the web you will see that people are unsatisfied with what Samsung is doing, and they are advising people away from Samsung.
For one, I know that I can directly influence 50 of my friends and I made sure to contact each and every one of them about Samsung new policies and advised them against any future purchase of a Samsung device. I also contacted some blogs explaining the issues that we have with Samsung - I have yet to hear a word from them - so even though Samsung can pay its way around the web to silence some critiques , it cannot affect the social binding , and the negative social vibe generated around its products . So let’s wait and see if Samsung will stay arrogant and fall like blackberry, nokia , palm … and any other too big for consumer company did , or whether they are going to start making some changes .

man!
I buy a samsung galaxy from the first that came out! always done with what I please! ROM metia you were pre-beta just to try!
with this, we put a barrier samsung and limits us to do what they want!
where it stayed that have Android to be free?
you say you buy a Nexus if I do not go through what we are subjected samsung .. do not you think you're thinking the wrong way? you are undergoing something you limited without any claim?
rings at David vs. Goliath, but at least you will know that there are a handful of unhappy with this new security policy, which on one hand is very good, but on the other, baaaaaaad!
we know that many end users do not even know it's a ROM, let alone answer if you have rooteado or not .. but we are the damned geeks what we like tinkering with what we buy ..
that's the point. perhaps not even make this request out of the desk, but at least we did not stay silent.
For one, the English version of the petition is rather unreadable due to poor punctuation and grammatical errors.
But the real problem is that KNOX itself isn't the problem but how Samsung has decided to inform the companies that handle the warranty repairs. Their line is simply "if there are any 0x1 flags then no warranty". The KNOX flag itself should only mean one thing: that the device was tampered with and its security compromised (important information for corporate IT departments) but it should have no bearing to hardware repairs as these are two separate things.
Done

I think this "petition" threads should be closed and deleted on XDA ... it obviously never changed anything. I signed so many and it never helped (last one was "HTC One X S-Off petition"). I dont think Samsung nor HTC gives a **** about flasher and custom ROM users like us. They need us just for beta testing when they throw us some "leaks" (like a bone to a dog).
TouchWiz is not the most horrid operating system I've run (it still isn't superb), but all the same, I'd rather be running pure AOSP (Android Open Source Project), but we need unlocked bootloaders. Come on Verizon, stop sucking! It is my phone and I ought to be able to do what I please with it. Imagine if you bought a fridge from the biggest and most powerful fridge manufacturer (Verizon) only to find out you were only allowed to put strawberries in it. Of all the foods in the entire world, the fridge manufacturer only allows strawberries in the fridge. Sure, it might be fine at first, but what happens when you want to make the fridge your own? As soon as you put a food other than strawberries in said fridge only to find the doors lock and the fridge stops working entirely. Now your fridge is useless because you wanted to support other people and make the fridge your own. If the farmers of the world want to survive, they need to strike deals with the fridge manufacturer in order to get their foods into the fridges. This is a monopoly. There is zero competition; everyone is at the mercy of the fridge manufacturer. This is what Verizon is doing with their phones. Either the developers give in to Verizon's insane demands (money and horrible contracts) to get the software on the phone, or they die out entirely and nobody ever remembers the developers even existed. Sure Verizon offers "Developer Edition" devices, but developers can't have a user base if users cannot install their software. What is the point of developing software for a device if nobody can use it? I'm just saying this is absolute garbage, and we should not take any more of it. Thoughts?

Well I had this issue with Motorola and we signed big petitions and got absolutely nowhere. They lost a faithful customer. So I bought this Samsung cause it was easy to do as I wish but they eventually locked it. I personally am not locked but my contract is coming due soon and development is slowly dying. So soon it will be time to move on to another manufacture which may be on a different provider. The question is, will I eventually run out of different manufactures as they all slowly lock down?? I don't know but I will continue to move to the next open device as they come. I am done with crap like this and I'm playing it smarter as I go each time by not buying the device the day it comes (not implying you did) out and keeping an eye on the forums for a month or two before I buy. I need to make sure the coast is clear before buying it. I will most likely be buying the next Nexus to be on the safe side plus their is always a ton of development for it. My contract will be up before it's released but I will just wait before I just buy another device cause I'm available to do so. This will obviously require me to move to another provider so no more Verizon. When my contract is up and they are knocking at my door with deals for a new device I can tell them to blow me. I have 4 phones on my account and you can be rest assured that everyone of them will be removed.
All I can say is rants like this don't get anyone anywhere. I totally agree with you and I'm glad your voicing your disgust and opinion but the best thing for us all to do is simply to move on. They just don't listen and they don't care.

This is sadly the world we live in today. Thankfully, the providers don't have us by the balls just yet, but I fear they soon will. That will be a sad day for the Android community. (Especially considering Android is open source.) Perhaps someday we will be able to publicly voice our concerns and equate our inability to unlock our phones' bootloaders to our (ability/inability) to unlock their SIM cards. It absolutely limits competition, and that's illegal. Thankfully Congress listened to the American people on the SIM card thing, but even if I can unlock my phone's SIM, I cannot use it on another network because my current operating system is locked to Verizon's network. We are literally half way there, but I doubt it will get any further, sadly.

It is sad they choose not to go with Nexus products at all, personally I think they are really loosing out as tons of people want them but can't get them on this network. I'm still a customer because of the coverage. It's sure as hell not for the prices or even the ability to customize my own device. I don't care if they claim to own it, I pay for it and use it so it's mine plain and simple

Nobody knows how they do it. And they certainly aren't going to tell anyone how they do it. That would be the easiest way to lose customers.
Hello all,
There was asimilar thread to this (which was short lived because it turned into nothing but a few little d-bags fighting like little girls) in the M8 non-specific carrier forum for conversation and information regarding potential other projects in progress for rooting the VZW M8 that is running 4.4.4 considering there is absolutely no options as of now... I for one have already decided to leave Verizon for this very reason, and if t_mobile is floating the bill for early termination...awesome! However I'm still stuck with the phone, which i love, but have never had a phone i couldn't root after one day of googling. So i want to know if anyone else is privvy to any info that I am not, it looks as though susunshine will be at least another 3 months. It seems there is easy too many geniuses out there to have jcase being the only one that has enough knowledge to do this, don't get me wrong, he is brilliant and very generous with his work but crap! This is aa pretty popular phone and lots of folks using VZW even though they suck for this kind thing, some have no choice and go to who offers the best reception in there area. Please post your thoughts.....
P.s. - as mentioned iam going to be having this VZW branded M8 AND I HAD heard there was a law passed stating that the carriers had to unlock the phones if the customer requested?? Anyone know about this, if so what do ineed to do?
As far as I know there is no progress on unlocking/s-off'ing 4.4.4 except for sunshine. It currently only works on 4.4.3 and below but it has been alluded to that future updates may support 4.4.4. You'll just have to wait and see.
Regarding the unlocking law, that's a different kind of "unlock". You're asking about unlocking your bootloader to allow you access to deeper levels of the phone's memory. That law was about being able to "carrier unlock" a phone to take it to another carrier which uses he same or overlapping frequencies.
It's unfortunate, but as far I can tell no new root method is working, and it might be a while until one is, as basically all other methods have been completely "fixed".
No one would be willing to burn an exploit right now knowing l is so close. Doing so right now would allow them to patch before l drops. We don't want or need that.

That completely makes sense, with L coming so soon they would be wasting their time and effort, as they may have one now but they do not want to release it because it would more than likely still work on L when its out and it would probably be a good while before an update after L so by waiting they are just being using good business sense.
But then again another dev or team could beat them to a crack, that is the good thing about a free society there is competition and no one owns the market at least not for long. I say bring on the competition lol.

Competition could lead to everyone who gets this phone with L being locked out if that's the case.

I really doubt that because there are a lot of devs out there that all they want is the recognition for being the one to crack it and are not looking for financial gain.

Once an exploit is burned its burned. If it is burned before L and it gets patched in L it means L gets delayed and everyone else gets locked out. It's a matter of the few versus the many. The fact they are NOT burning the exploit now because of this should tell you it's not about $.

That does NOT mean it has nothing to do with $ because it would not be smart to release it now because there would be no gain giving away the crack then they would not make much $ because yes L would most likely patch it. The most financial gain would be to wait till after L because the next update would be a lot farther away, giving more time to collect.

This thread is no longer serving a purpose. You are upset after being locked out which I understand. Unless you come up with a method and exploit of your own I would suggest you cease this conversation as there won't be a happy ending.

I"am already unlocked I only responded to the posts already made, and I did not make this thread. No Iam not upset at all you stated your opinion and I did mine and we dont need to agree. I"am more than happy to cease the conversation that you started. I was only replying to the comments you posted replying to mine. I think we can both agree and both agree to disagree, after all we dont have to agree.
Thank you for your opinion and have a good day.

Agreed. Hopefully the wait for L isn't that long...and the issue becomes moot.

Oh and for the record actually I have used your fixes on here quite a few times so I appreciate the things you put on here. I can respect someone and still debate with them and have a difference of opinion and as you can see if I make a mistake in something I do my best to correct it.
heck yes
There can always be a fruitful discussion without people agreeing, that is the way our forefathers did it, and as far as I know, they didn't kill one another, good thread.
Cheers
Except for that little incident 1861 - 1865.......

Then you probably shouldn't be on XDA. That's how devs get devices when they can't afford one for themselves, or when a dev already owns a different device but wants to help the other parts of the community.
Your funny.

Well friend, then to answer your question, no, we won't have CM13 on the Note5. Not if people like you come on here simply to take the work that devs do and never contribute to the community that makes things like CM13 on the Note5 possible.
You're funny.
What work am I taking away I would just be a little concerned sending a bunch of money who I or other people have not have meet before I am sorry about that.. people get the wrong the wrong idea and start freaking out instead of explaining anything just say

I get that, but the idea of this community is to contribute to the community. A lot of people come here simply to download free ROMs and Kernels. Devs work hard on this stuff and it wouldn't kill the community to give back. Especially if something like CM13 has the possibility of coming to our devices, which a lot of people would love to see. If we want a dev to develop for our device, they need to have our device. Simple as that.

Get that as well, but did you ever see the bounty for the note 4 att/vzw? 13k for root and 16k for no knox trip. I'm pledging 10 USD and if it goes to waste, than oh well. Xda is a great community and I'm just glad to give some effort to support the cause.

This is a great attitude to have. You could also look at it this way: If the dev isn't able to complete the project you donated for, consider your donation payment for some of the other work the dev has more than likely already put out.

I am the one taking donations to buy the device for the developer. You do not know me, neither do most people on this board but it comes down to the fact that the developer needs the phone we want him to attempt to get CM, AOSP or any other version of android besides stock running on. He graciously agreed to attempt it but said he will not start a thread asking for donations, which I understand. I agreed to start it, if you are not comfortable with donating to purchase the device, you don't have to and I understand that as well.
I have been a good standing, registered member since 09, lurking for some time before that. I have compiled CM for several devices that I have owned and shared them on these boards, I have been a part of other donation/bounty drives understanding my donation, small as they may be equals strength in numbers and is a small risk I am willing to take because I belive people are generally good and have faith in the xda community. Obviously you do not share that thought and that's OK, but if you have ever used a mod, ROM, freely published apps here or anything of the like you should contribute something to that dev, if they do not take donations most have a link to a charity you can donate to. I am not saying you haven't, just saying in general that's how things work.
I understand that the possibility of me, or once I send the device to the developer, him just disappearing is a fear some may have but that's when you look at how long the person has been here, what they have contributed, have they been helpful etc and make your own decision. It's unrealistic for developers to acquire numerous, expensive devices, develop for them then freely make their work available, yet that's what happens at times, other times the community steps up.
Did not mean to start a big thing and sorry if you all took it the wrong way.. I was just concerned other all and I thank everyone for there comments. Duster thank you for all your hard work I am not doubting you at all I love the work you put in..

It's all good man. We may come off a little strong here on XDA because we; for lack of a better work, care about our devs because they do a lot of stuff without even demanding payment. That particular dev has a history here on XDA for bringing AOSP/CM based work onto previous Note devices so he is reputable. However I definitely understand your concerns as it does come up here in the community from time to time. I remember there were a few devs that let the money get to them and they ended up leaving because they took the money and ran. That was a few years ago though.
I wouldn't sweat it though. I do encourage you to donate at least $10. We are close to getting the funds needed to get the device for him so that work can begin. Though it's not a gaurantee that he will be able to get CM on the Note 5, progress has already been made getting it onto the Sprint version, so we are very hopeful that it'll happen for the other variants as well.
CM 13 will NEVER come to our Note 5. Don't get all your hopes up guys/girls. This guy is blowing smoke up our a$$es.. If it was able to be done, don't you think CM would be doing it for us?! The day I buy a stranger a phone, just to make my $600 purchase a better experience will NEVER happen. Sorry

CM doesn't develop for Exynos devices so no, I don't think they'd do it.
Also, you're not really buying him a phone, you're just chipping in (doesn't even have to be that much) to make your $600 purchase a better experience. Seems worth it to me. It's okay though, you're allowed to not chip in. It's totally your choice.
Too bad most of the devs here are really nice people. If I were a dev, and I managed to get CM working on the Note 5 because the community chipped in and got me one, I'd privately release it to only the people who donated. That's just me, though.

People are just overly salty for no reason these days. I think they are just trying to make everyone else a debbie downer like they are.
If it actually EVER gets released, feel free to tag me and say you told you so... Until then, I'll be laughing at the ones waiting.
And to the post above, overly salty?!.. No, I'm just being a realist and acknowledging that it will never be released for our device.
Want CM?!? Get a damn nexus!
