I assumed you were rooted. Yes you need to root to flash. Go to Nexus S general and sticky for root guides. Easy stuff once you read up and have a go.

I went back to GB, 2.3.6, used this as a guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1785672
You also have to install FOTAkill.apk before the phone connects to the network, to prevent the phone from downloading and nag you to install ICS and JB.
The end result of going back to GB, is a fast, no frills phone with very good battery life.

Use the link posted by @billford above. This has a step by step for on how to do it. Flash proper factory image by Google.

I don't see why you have to downgrade it back to 4.0 since jellybean is better in every way.

[Q] Need to Unroot 2.3.5 GSII Skyrocket

I'm here with a rooted Skyrocket (AT&T) on G-Bread 2.3.5 and need to unroot.
I originally rooted while I was on 2.3.4, but about a month and half ago the firmware automatically updated to 2.3.5.
I used DooMLoRD_v3_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su method.
My end-game is to get back to complete stock Skyrocket.
Grazie
1) why would u want to...?
2) flash stock rom via odin.
3) learn to use the search button.
4) have a good day.

Yes
I would suggest reading about the leak before you flash it. Flashing stock will trip your flash counter, flashing ICS will not.

[Q] Leaked ICS General Questions

Firstly, I would like to apologize if this information is elsewhere but I just wanted to get confirmation for this all in one place.
1) If I upgrade to the leaked ICS ROM will I retain root privileges.
2) If I do not retain root privileges can I re root my phone (I had this issue with the HTC aria upgrade to froyo because of the locked bootloader)
3) Is this ROM stable (or at least relatively so)
1) yes
2) doesn't apply becuz of 1
3) yes, i recommend superlite 5.1 or team perfection.
Correction: if you upgrade through Odin, you lose everything on your internal sdcard AND ROOT.

If you use the Odin leak (not very stable) use super one click or Odin cwm then flash superuser to get root.
Or do the easy way and flash one of the custom rooms that all are already rooted for you and have fixes.

correction correction. As long as he flashes one of the roms i suggested, I highly recommend superlite, he won't lose either. Plus the oneclick is unstable and buggy

So the leaked official one is not very stable correct? If I were to flash one of the custom ones would it have touchwiz and all the other official stuff

u want all the touchwiz stuff? Use superlite by mhx or stock revamped by team perfection. Im not a fan of touchwiz, and if: aren't either any other ics rom will do, in which case i recommend ics - the real thing by seanscreamz.
This entire thread could of been avoided, by just reading the Odin ics and root thread in the rom section. Close this thread

[Q] how to root/flash ROMs after OTA 4.1.1 update?

I recently updated my verizon galaxy s3 to android build 4.1.1 but now I decided that I want to root my phone and flash some awesome ROMS. Droidstyles guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762709) seems really easy to follow but I just want to make sure it works the new verizon baseband version I535VRBLK3 (4.1.1). Can someone please help this noob so he can flash all these bad ass ROMS I keep reading about?!
I used this tutorial ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439
[GUIDE] Root for Jelly Bean OTA ***UPDATED***) where you flash a different boot chain, root, then reflash the original. Works perfectly, I flashed CM10 to my GS3 this morning and it works great!

I can help you with this, but first you must understand that if you are running 4.0 ICS you are running stock official firmware and to get to 4.1 you will need to know how to use Odin ,be able to flash a custom recovery, and you will root your phone in the process, all of this which will void your warranty are you sure you want to continue?

Okay so honestly all you must do is follow the instructions provided here

And then you can flash whichever 4.1 JB ROM you'd like.

You can skip root and just Odin cwm on, instead of having to run it twice. Unless you need to tibu some apps. I would suggest starting fresh while jumping to jb though.

Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich Unlocked and Rooted

Hi. I thank you in advance for pointers and direction. I have searched around, but want to make sure I am doing the right thing.
I have an Infuse and it is unlocked. It is running with a T-Mobile SIM card.
I downloaded Odin 3 v1.7. I successfully flashed from 2.2.1 (Froyo) to 2.3.6 Gingerbread by using this ROM/Root that I found on another thread here:
************ OPTION C *************
I997UCLB3-CWM-root-deodex-extras.rar
Features in this version
- Entropy's Daily Driver kernel
- Red CWM recovery
- Rooted
- Deodexed
- Zipaligned
- Busybox
- AT&T and other bloatware removed
- Scrolling wallpaper fix
- CRT off animation
- 8 lock screens
- Extended power menu
- Accurate battery mod
The phone is working properly on the new firmware.
I would like to jump up one more firmware to Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean. Every method I can find seems to include root, and I am already rooted. That happened when I ran "option C" from above.
What is my next step? Can I simply flash a Gingerbread ROM through Odin (after, of course, putting the Infuse in "download" mode)?
You need to flash a (ics) rom from the CWM RECOVERY of the phone not using odin and then you can flash a jellybean 4.xx rom.

When I flashed cwm it was red recovery, which is what you stated you had in the first post by choosing option c
You'll have to flash ICS before flashing jelly Bean when you flash ICS it'll change the cwm to a more current one.

one last check ...
Let me check one last time before I do something stupid:
I have a rooted and unlocked (T-mobile service) Infuse. I had stock Froyo 2.2.1. I used Option C from a thread here that rooted it and gave me RED recovery. I used Odin and flashed the "extras" package.
I currently have build #: Gingerbread.UCLB3, kernal version: 2.6.25.7-I997ruxkg3-cl366622, firmware 2.3.6.
I would like to experiment with flashing up to ICS, maybe Jelly Bean.
My understanding is that I can simply drop a ICS rom onto my SD card and flash it from red recovery. Then I do do the same process to move to Jelly Bean.
Am I correct? Am I missing anything? Thank you ALL soooo much for guidance. I am learning and will pass it on!

Its really hard to screw things with this phone specialy.....
Yeah.....its typed on Note 3.
Ok, I followed the directions provided and flashed Infinitum ICS. All works well with the rom. Recovery is distorted. I see directions which include Heimdall to correct the recovery.
Does that process just correct the recovery or does it revert me back to something other than Infinitum Rom? if so, can I repeat the process to get the rom back?
My next step will them be to move to jelly bean and be happily ever after.

When you update your phone you don't flash the gingerbread bootloaders right, you only need to flash the gingerbread bootloaders and that will fix the problem.

Ok, I blew it. Flashed back to Gingerbread.UCLB3, firmware 2.3.6 with Heimdall. Recovery is still totally distorted/unreadable.
Next move? I assume I should flash a Gingerbread bootloader. Where would I find the right one? I don't want to screw this up. Then I can move to ICS and then JB with no issues, right?
I 100% appreciate your help and I SWEAR I will pass along what I am learning to a newbie as soon as I get a chance!

Hey! It looks like I corrected the issue before you messaged back. I ran Heimdall again. Thought I had blown it. Screen went all speckled red yellow and blue on me. It was kinda pretty. I booted in download mode and it was speckled, too. I followed the steps to download mode even thought I could not see the screen. I flashed through Heimdall again, it ran properly, and then booted into download mode and ran with "bootloaders" checked. It seems all is well. Recovery mode is working (no distortion) and is blue (Android system recovery 3e).
Can I follow the steps I took to go to ICS and then JB (if I decide to go to JB) now with no other issues?
