Tethering computer vs tablet - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Sorry to ask a noob question, wondering if I'm posting in the right place. Got an s3 to keep my unlimited data. Reading it says that Verizon can tell if you tethering to a computer due to TTL packets. I don't know much about networking but reading it says that windows computers while tethering push a value of 124 or 128 packets unless configured while android devices have a value of 64. The thing is I never tether to my computer only my tablet. So can I safely go nuts tethering to my tablet as if it was my phone due to it looking like I'm using my phone or am I way off and can Verizon tell I'm tethering and using my tablet. I really just want tot tether the hell out f my tablet when I need it. Anyways as this is XDA can I hide it safely?

T-Mobile us 5gb plan includes tethering

As title states, I saw a post some were asking if the 5 gig data plan includes tethering. I just got of the phone with t mobile and it dose. Just for anyone who was wandering.
Sent from my HTC One S
are you rooted
i tried it with a rooted one s and didn't work
will try my Tether App
No i have stock phone. To be clear though. I do not own a laptop so I can't test it. I'm just relaying what the T-Mobile dude told me. But when I connect my usb to the desktop and select USB tether I don't get any blocks or messages so I would conclude that the USB tethering is permitted.

maybe because i am rooted
my tether app works though
Okay, I think I know...first install the HTC sync driver.... Then make sure that works. And I bet the tether well work then. It did for me I tested on the desktop. Good luck.

Already installed but not recognizing phone. It did recognize phone when first installed. Has given me some some adb issues. Will probaly uninstall it.
Well at least you can get it to work with another tether app. And plus since tethering is included in the 5 gigs plan they shouldn't bother you about tethering. I don't think they care what app you use anyway.
Sent from my HTC One S
They did with my nexus one.
Hopefully they won't bother me with this phone.
The guy at Tmobile said I needed to pay 5 dollars a month for the data plan that included tethering. He said it was needed for the phone... I always root my devices so I tether either way but I said okay and got the phone. Since I was paying for it I decided to try it out and it's actually not bad. You activate it through the wifi hotspots in the app drawer. I'm on a EU rom now so I'm not sure what it's called on Tmobile US rom... Anyways it works perfectly and is able to tether up to 8 devices but I would assume you're data couldn't handle that much lol. Goes to show how good Tmobile thinks their HSPA is.... It is pretty nice having the option tethering multiple devices. I'm happy paying 5 bucks for that feature
Oh I almost forgot it works perfectly rooted or unrooted... I tried it before rooting and it works just the same now.

Hey rugmankc, what tether app are you using?
Didn't have to worry about this with CM7 on the N1.
Thanks

The 5 gig plan includes tethering. I am not rooted and upgraded to that plan for the purpose of tethering and it includes it. At first it did not work, I called and said, I was told this plan included tethering, the lady was very nice and enabled it. Told me to turn the phone off and reboot and then it would work. It did. I haven't done anything else and the native app works great.
I have the 5gig plan didn't know this was included thanks

I think if the 5 does, so should the 10 gb, I think at one point it was advertised as having tethering, just call and act like you were told this was the case. I thought I was going to have to threaten things but they did it without argument.
I just looked at their webpage and all their new plans seem to include it. It doesn't hurt to call.

It is a paid app. But cheaper than 10.00 twice a year on vacation. No pc available atm and in 2g only area and spent last nite in ER. So, didn't read anything on the tmo free tether with 5gb plan which I have.

Truly unlimited data T-Mobile.

Anyone have it? They told me that I can't tether the phone once I switch. But I'm rooted and was wondering if they can see if I'm tethering.

I would like them to offer unlimited data for the rest of my life. Please don’t exploit it with a workaround. Oh, and I have a rooted HTC One S and was able to tether for about 20 minutes, then was redirected to a t-mobile page explaining how to purchase. Don't be that sliver of the market that causes the engineers to drop the unlimited plan. They are taking a risk offering it in the first place.
Respectfully,
Josh-
How does the limit on roami.g data work with this plan.

Should be able to use the tmobile apn settings to get around the tethering restriction. Search the threads, the settings are around here somewhere. I think one (or more) of the rom threads in the development section show the settings, maybe Axiom or Trickdroid if I'm not mistaken...
Yeah I tried that with mine the APN changes.
Got it to work at first where before it didn't.
It transfered about 100 MB worth of data then I got the redirect trying to sell me the service and stopped working.
WiFi tether for root users works wonders, I haven't had problems with it on my 5Gb plan.

I Actually Work For T-Mobile Myself & The APN Has Worked Fine, & Actually Tethering Is Already Included Within The 5GB Data Plan Without Root Lol

I have the unlimited 4G data plan with Tmobile. I used almost 1gb of data in about 10 days already. In my account, it says it has 9999 gb total for me; Guessing 9999 gb equates to unlimited. It's worth it IMO for 30 bucks a month.

Does T-Mobile charge me for using wifi hotspot?

Hi guys Im switching from Simple Mobile to T-Mobile (Same thing I know...) I was on the $40 plan now on T-Mobile im switching to their $30 plan.
I searched around checking if I get charged for using the hotspot on my phone, some say yes they catch you and others say no its built into the phone.
Anyone want to clarify this? Spec's in my signature.
This isn't the T-Mobile forum

If you root your phone and download a wifi tether app, it will work regardless.
If you go to, say, Settings>Wireless and Networks>Tethering, for me, it does check if you have tethering in your plan.

Can a phone have a tablet data plan?

Hey I come from the land of crap data plans a.k.a. Canada. Its known for,$10 a gb and 2¢ a MB overage fees.
I have a nexus 7 without 3g connection. Is it possible to take a old smart phone and set it up with a tablet data plan? The idea here is to have a tablet plan on my phone to tether my nexus bypassing the upcharge for the 3g model.

That's going to be carrier dependant. I have ATT and I know they don't allow that. Pretty sure sprint and verizon don't either.

Yep. Im currently in Canada using a bell tablet data plan on my s3. Works perfectly, tethering to my laptop and all. I got it with the first 2 months unlimited data, but i think that promo is over.
Telus is supposed to have a similar deal going on, just make sure they add the unlimited data. I had a problem because they forgot to do it at the store, otherwise its been working fine.

How much data is to much? I don't want to send any red flags about my account which already may be to late because I'm at 12gb lol.

I have unlimited too, and I use around 5 GB without tethering and haven't heard anything from Verizon.
I also read somewhere that it's unlimited users on 3G phones that get throttled and have issues. Phones with 4G data don't get throttled or taken notice by Verizon. A quick Google search can show some talk supporting the statement, so that's something to think about!

Holy crap! And I thought my record of 113gb was insane! What do you do?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I generally go through about 12-50gb a month...just depends on how much 4g time I can get my hands on lol.
a close friend of mine uses 60-80 per month streaming HD video (netflix, nhl gamecenter, nfl games, etc) and has never heard anything. Just another point of data for context
Oh yeah lol. I'm thinking about canceling my cable internet because I don't get the speeds advertised. Sad my phone has a better and more consistent connection than my cable internet.
We top 5% 4G users might be "flagged" in the future and be placed on "verizon network optimization."

I've been hearing that forever. Its not going to happen. Due to situations outside of my control I needed to ditch my unlimited. And I miss it ever day
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Why would we get flagged? We have unlimited data. We chose not to buy a phone subsidized by Verizon so that we can keep unlimited data.
I am the IT guy for a church and school and I've upgraded 10 users to 4G phones through eBay and Craigslist. One of our staff members uses 40GB a month, I use about 15 GB. All of us go well over 2 GB, but what does it matter? We have unlimited data!
It would stand to reason that AT&T users with grandfathered unlimited plans are more abundant than us since they can still upgrade through AT&T and keep unlimited data.
I don't see why anyone would get flagged. The number of unlimited data VZW users will only decrease over time. Verizon makes more money than anyone. They add towers practically every week.
I say, sit back, and soak up the data!
I run my entire house off my wifi tether. No cable, no internet only my galaxy s3....I'm a flashaholic... so i switch between roms almost daily. Running three cpu's and two phones off the connection. Grandfathered contact like a mug lol

Those running there home internet off their Galaxy (or any phone via Wi-Fi tether), how does your family use the internet when you're not around? I often considered this, but doesn't seem practical.
