New to all this. - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I have a SGS3 at home in the mail. I want to try rooting or whatever, do I have to root first or can I download the app that unlocks the bootloader and do that first? Can someone give a noob some advice and what steps I need to do? What does unlocking the bootloader do anyways?

You root first. There are some guides stickied in Android Development.

you root, unlock bootloader, install recovery (Clockwork mod non-touch seems to always be preferred) - after that you can contemplate installing custom roms, but I think installing recovery is just a good thing to do regardless.

sir/mam, I normally would have no problem helping a fellow member out, but I gurantee that I could go through the first page in each section of this forum and find all the answers/information one needs to get started. Point is your question has been asked 10 times alone today...so please spare us the "I already searched routine" because we all no you didnt!! /rant

Start by rooting your phone with droidstyle's guide in the android dev stickies

[GUIDE] How to PermaRoot your Desire HD

I have just complied this Step-by-Step guide on how to root your Desire HD.
I by no means created the root, I simply used my own and others knowledge to put this guide together to help everyone.
Hopefully this is more of a beginners guide so we can ease new Android users into a bit of coding rather than relying on Apps to do the work

not saying your works unapperciated lol
could they not be merged to keep it all tidy? two posts that do the exact same thing in the exact same way?
anyways back to trying CWM

There was a lot of people asking how to do it since they couldn't figure it out from adwinp's post and any advice was getting lost in the thread.
I just put my own work into a new thread so it was easy for people to find
And this method avoids terminal or adb so is a bit more beginner friendly I was going to wait for the visionary update tomorrow but now thanks to evostance's guide I have permaroot on the day it was found/exploited/invented.

Yes and No.
I don't know if VISIONary will just be able to root one Kernel Version, or if it will be able to modify the wpx.ko file depending on your Kernel Version.
awesome recap of how to permaroot!

Thanks.

Are we supposed to have run VISIONary before we run the scripts? The guide PDF doesn't say to run it until after, but the original forum topic says run it before... because I'm getting that blue screen that does nothing.
Edit: Okay I got it, maybe prefix the part about running the Gscrips with "Open VISIONary, tick "Run on Boot" and then click "Root Now!" before you continue to running the GScript actions.
You need sudo access before running GScripts.
I have longed for this day for 8 days now
Thank you so much.

Huge thanks to everyone in the Research thread spending countless hours to get the job done and the person that made the leak possible!
Old Info (for reference only!):
(Text in RED are my safety additions):
Hilbe said:
Here's how to do it manually without CASUAL. All credits to Adam.
From a computer with adb on a rooted device:
Code:
adb push aboot.img /sdcard/aboot.img
adb shell
su
dd if=/sdcard/aboot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5
Verify you got a good flash:
Code:
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5 of=/sdcard/abootTEST.img
Now, check the MD5 of abootTEST.img BEFORE you turn your phone off. If it is wrong, reflash again until it is correct. It should be the same as the original aboot.img you already checked the MD5 of.
Also can be done via downloading the attachment, putting at root of /sdcard/ and doing these commands in terminal on a rooted device:
Code:
su
dd if=/sdcard/aboot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5
Verify you got a good flash:
Code:
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5 of=/sdcard/abootTEST.img
Now, check the MD5 of abootTEST.img BEFORE you turn your phone off. If it is wrong, reflash again until it is correct. It should be the same as the original aboot.img you already checked the MD5 of.
MD5 (aboot.img) = 0ba9ad45fc15cf3d62af7dd363686b3f

[Q] Root without unlock or touch anything

Hi, i need a way to get only root access, without unlock, with all stock and avaiable ota, there is a way to do this?
I did it with my tf300t with one-click-transformer-root, and i did same thing with my note 2 lte with framaroot and ota rootkeeper.
I need a way to not lose warranty, and have just root access.
Thank's in advice for answers!

You have to unlock the bootloader to root. You can relock it afterwards if you want to
Edit, day 2 of 7 with the internet working

You can't root without unlocking the bootloader. If you ever have to exchange it under warranty, you can reset the tamper flag and relock the bootloader, they'll be none the wiser.

if you think modifying your device keeps you safe from bricking it, you need to stop rooting your phone and stick to stock.
people make mistakes and your blind following makes you look ignorant and uninformed.

really, I am in the modding since I bought the first galaxy young, and all the developers warn worthy of respect and do not take responsibility for damage to devices, if we do not take resposability we do not public on play google, on google play store a child may install and tap 2 buttons, that is how I publish a tread "Root your galaxy Note 2," and i put inside the kernel of Commodore64, before you speak of ignorance think of ignorance with which you answered without even knowing what we're talking.

I read your post twice and still can't figure out exactly what you're trying to say - you published a thread about rooting your note 2 (by installing and tapping 2 buttons on google play), and put the thread inside the kernel of commodore64? wut?
Your original question was "Can you root without unlocking bootloader" - the answer, as several folks posted (and was mentioned in earlier searchable threads as well) was "No"
Did that answer your question? Or do you have a follow up question? - Not trying to sound rude - just trying to understand if your question has been answered or not.

(2012) Nexus 7 root help

I rooted my Nexus 7 a while back and when I updated the android version I lost my root. It still says my bootloader is unlocked but it isn't. Could someone help me re-root my tablet?
Unlocked bootloader doesn't have anything to do with root. You can have a unlocked bootloader tablet with no root.
Anyway to answer your question, it's fairly easy to root it again. Check this thread. If you find it too complicated, try this one or this
You're welcome, just next time use the SEARCH button. These threads are always on the forums

Search a video on YouTube called "Nexus 7 ROOT - How to Root Nexus 7! (Android 4.4/4.3/4.2.1/4.2.2)"
As you already know my boat loader is already unlocked and all I had to do was install the root app (SuperSU) and recover my tablet. But after I recovered I tried to update and it failed, still no root access.
Do you have 3G version? Here is another guide for you.. I thought you got the newer 2013 edition so the previous links were not that useful

I can't root my S4 because it's on AT&T and from what I understand AT&T has locked the bootloader and no one has figured out how to unlock just yet but this little Acer tablet should be a cake walk but apparently I am not the pastry chef because I am stumped.

nothing wrong you can ask ....bootloader is a kind of security put by the manufacturer and after unlocking this will wipe your data .... and its not necessary that every phone/tab has a locked bootloader ....for eg. most of the samsung phones have bootloader unlocked whereas htc phones you have to do that manually ...it differs from every manufacturer so im not preety sure that it has a locked bootloader ....... so u gotta try if root doesnt work maybe its locked bootloader
