Google Play not downloading when screen off - HTC Sensation

The title pretty much says it all...
I'm using a HTC Sensation XE.
When I download / update apps through Google Play and my screen times out and turns off - the downloads stop. Sometimes the downloads won't resume once I turn my screen back on.
This doesn't happen on any of my other Android devices and was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this? It is annoying because I have to keep the phone awake if I am updating a few apps at a time.
This has always happened with this phone, before and after root. I realise I could extend my display sleep time, but would like it to work like my other devices.
Cheers

Did you set your "Keep WIFI on during sleep" as "Never" or "Only when plug in", if so, when screen timeout, wifi will be turned off.

Yes, can be the wifi automatically turned off... but in this case the 3G/Edge take the connexion... I am wrong ?

Thanks for the replies.
The 'keep WiFi on during sleep' is and always has been enabled. This is only a minor annoyance really as I only have to manually keep the screen on for a short time while the apps update. Just thought its strange and maybe other had the same problem.

Maybe the screen must be turned on to GooglePlay starts downloading the applications, and then continues when the screen turns off... (When you install apps directly from https://play.google.com/store)
But can't start directly if the screen is off ?
I gonna test that maybe this afternoon... Installing apps in GooglePlay or on https://play.google.com/store...

+1 It is same with me I am with Viperss rom 1.1.0 and in tewaks i disable htc smartsynch and keep wifi always and when screen turn off app stop downloading

I have a sensation 4G, don't think that would really make a difference, but that doesn't happen to me. ICS? by any chance did you set a data limit then check "disable background data"? If so, that might be it.
ThisBeMySignatureMatieee!

+1 to revive this thread...though I have a Droid4 running ICS, I experience the same exact issue. Hitting update all works if I keep the screen on the entire time, but the second the screen times out, all downloads cease and just sit there with endless progress bars until I stop and restart them. This is using mobile data, plugged in, without wifi even turned on. I feel this must be a bug with the Play Store itself as it's happening across devices and roms.

same problem here on Samsung Galaxy S Plus, every rom every kernel... is there a solution?

A simple solution to the wifi issues in ICS roms

So this is a nontehnical solution to fix your wifi troubles. While your phone is on, turn the wifi off and then reboot the phone. When the phone comes back the wifi will still be off but you will be able to switch it on and off. If you reboot the phone with your wifi on, then your wifi issues will come back when you turn the phone off. I've used this technique for the last two days on AOKP v2 but if all of the ICS roms are using the same kernel then this should work in every rom.

Unfortunately I have not been able to reproduce this result. This method works for me and is reliable and I'm sure it can help others as well. I've tried turning the auto sync on and off and that did not help either.
I noticed that if it gets "STUCK" turning it on or off, if you wait long enough in the actual wifi settings not the notification bar or in the initial wifi settings (where it lists the available networks) you will see that the top button will eventually be able to be used. I am talking like a few minutes. Of course it would probably be quicker to restart the phone.

Which is why rebooting the phone with the wifi turned off is the simple solution for me.

sleep of death and utorrent

So I just got the TF300 and the first thing I dd was install the JB update and been noticing that is very laggy and slow. But that was quickly resolved by a factory reset and when wiping dilvik/cache (at least i hope) and now seems to response much better.
The issue now i have is whenever i use utorrent the tablet becomes unusable and the fix for that was to use a SD Card which also worked and everything was working the way it should, it was very responsive and the torrent was downloading quickly, but as soon as the screen timed out it would not wake up again or sometimes took forever.
sometimes the screen came back after 3 minutes and other times it required a reboot, this is an issue only when utorrent is downloading a torrent and does not happen if its just open. I have not seen this happen randomly like others have experienced just only with utorrent downloading.
Any inputs or suggestions?
Have you guys tried with a different torrent app?
you could try is this new-5-star app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...xLDEsImNvbS5BbmRyb2lkQS5Ecm9pRG93bmxvYWRlciJd
try it to see if the problem persists
and can you answer my question, please: you just got your tf300, so after you turn it on the first time, what firmware version was it? did you have to update to ICS .30 and then update to JB or did you just update straight to JB? in other words, how many updates did you do to get JB? 1 or 2?
i'm asking because last time with my returned tf300 i had to do to updates (from .26 out of the box to .30, then JB), i got my replacement today but haven't turned on yet (i'm leaving it charging 8 hours as the manual suggests), i'm not sure what firmware will it update to when i turn it on, since i don't want jelly bean this is what i really need to care about

Do you have a fast internet connection? The problem you had with the slowness while downloading to the internal memory is because of bad I/O performance from ASUS, writing and reading on to and from to the internal memory kinda sucks compare to other devices. So directing your downloads to your external sd card was a good idea .
+1 for Adownloader, I have always used that app for torrents, hasn't failed me so far.
Yeah i heard about Adownloader but been a fan of utorrent for as long as i can remember and it works flawless on my S3, but will try aDownloader.
@nooktablet
It was ICS and just had one update to get it too JB.
aDownloader is the same
Do you have keep wifi on during sleep? It is posible that this is causing the sleep of death somehow, apps running on the background. My NookColor used to have a lot of sleep of deaths before I turned the wifi off after each use. But if you turn it off it will defeat the purpose of downloading torrents while screen is off. As far as you can tell it only happens when you are downloading torrents? Also check on settings "ASUS customize setting" and make sure that "Disconnect network during sleep" is not ticked. Another thing you can try is setting up screen saver with a completely black image, so it will use the least battery possible.
Anyways I never use automatic screen timeout I have it on never so I really haven't experienced this problem. If nothing else works, my suggestion is don't let the screen timeout while downloading torrents. Also try reporting the error to ASUS so they added to the list of future fixes.
downloading torrents make your tablet slow even with fast internet.
Just deal with it... or download them from your computer and xfer them over to your tablet.

Under the Asus Custom settings that was already off, but I changed the wifi sleep policy to always on yesterday so you maybe on to something. I will have to test when oi get a chance.

Is there anything we can do about push notications on Sense?

I know I'm not the only person to have problems with push notications on sense base ROMs (including stock). I've missed many Whatapps messages, Facebook notification, and more all because the phone won't push notications when the screen has been off for more than 5 minutes or so. I've noticed on CM10 that I don't have this problem. On stock ROM and CleanROM, I've noticed that it does have this issue. Is there any type of fix for it besides using a Non-Sense ROM?

I really don't want to use a jellybean sense ROM until AT&T releases their. They all seem to have issues.
No issues on ics viperxl I get my notifications instantly no matter how long the screen has been off for

I did some testing on my roommate's phone with Whatsapp. It seems when you're connected to wifi, there is a delay on receiving notifications when the screen is off. I've looked into this and saw that you needed to open some ports on your router for push notification to work. I opened those ports and still no luck.
When I'm using my carrier's data, I get notifcations instantly even when my screen is off. I really don't know what's going on. I've switched over to Viper's JB ROM and still getting that same issue. It's definitely Sense related.
I've noticed that if you restore an app with tibu, the push notifications stop working. Uninstalling and reinstalling the app from the market corrected this
I did some more testing and found a solution. I've noticed that when I turn my screen off and access my router settings, the HTC One X disappeared under attached devices. As soon as I turned the screen back on, I refreshed the page and saw that the phone was back in the list of attached devices to the router.
I went to Settings > WiFi > Advanced > and enabled "Best WiFi Performance". True..this may drain your battery faster, but I'm getting notifications instantly now with wifi on and my screen turned off.

Black screen after 5.0 update

I received OTA yesterday and so far found one bug. There is a black screen comes up randomly. Top and bottom bars are visible but I can't do anything to get out of it. The only thing that works is restart. I can't pinpoint the app that might be causing it. It happened while updating apps or using Firefox. Anybody else having this issue?

Did you wipe your cash after updating? I had experienced several bags after the OTA update too, but i cleaned cash from the recovery mode and now everything works just fine.
Did wiped cache from recovery mode yesterday and it was OK. Today the black screen issue is back. It's quite annoying having to restart.

Hi there, I am currently having the same bug on my Nexus 4 device.
It appears the same way, with the Softbuttons visibile and the top bar still able to be pulled down. Plus that there is no option if I restart to get my SIM card recognized. Pretty annoying when you have an encrypted nexus device and have to wait 2 minutes to restart with a 40% chance of NOT getting the black screen again.
My assumption is that it has something to do with the kernel. Any suggestions/confirmations?
Best regards

Same problem here... black screen with only softbuttons visible and notification bar working.
I think the problem occurs when an application is in full screen mode (no softbuttons visible) and you do a little swipe to make the softbuttons appear... It must be something with the way the softbuttons overlap the screen, I think.
Any help?
I am also seeing this problem on my Nexus 5 which I flashed the factory image with full wipe. I have had it when exiting apps and also when an app is open it can just happen. If i swipe up from the bottom sometime I get a flash of the screen during the animation so it is as if a layer is over the screen. I hope this is fixed as it is random, this morning it happened and after a reboot i logged in and it happened before I opened an app, reboot, then happened again a few mins later, but after a 3rd reboot has been ok???
For everyone that is experiencing this problem... do you have Tasker installed?
I disabled tasker and since then I don't have this problem... so far.
Still happening once in awhile and I do have Tasker.

It happens to me. My current theory is that, in my case, it may have to do with a profile manager I use which turns the lock screen pattern lock on and off depending on where I am.

I also have tasker, don't want to disable it as I find it too useful, can you keep us all informed if it cures the issue.

I also find tasker very useful.. but I think it was causing the problem. No more black screens since then.
To try to narrow it down even further... do you have a profile to enable/disable the lockscreen in certain situations?

I do use tasker to disable the lock screen, I wish that the smart lock would completley disable the lock screen, and not just the secure section. I will take all the lock screen options out of my tasks and reboot, will test for a few days.
I tested over the weekend and had no black screens with all tasker/secure settings lock screen disables turned off, I left all other actions on , so I think you are correct. actualy got on OK using the smart unlock, although when in my house sometimes GPS is lost so it will relock, but not a real issue. Thanks for the heads up

Nouget BETA users...list your issues here

I seen threads about thoughts of the update but I figured this thread to be more specific on the issues your experience on nought beta: bugs, freezes, force closes, lag, etc.
Posting issues or suggestions here will be useless to the Samsung team. To give feedback on the beta, just open the "Samsung Members" app and provide your feedback there. This way the team can actually address it.
Aside from standby battery drain, it's been pretty smooth.
Oh, the keypad sometimes can't keep up with my typing lol. That's about it.

I am still getting the sound cutting out bug that was seen in Marshmallow.... ie; sound on YouTube videos, etc will play for a few seconds and then cut out to silence. Have tried all the "solutions" offered but it still happens.
*Very frustrating.
I have the battery drain problem too.

If you downloaded something after to took your last picture that is. Only pictures taken with the camera should be in here. Note 7 had this same issue.

Did you factory reset after the install?
Encrypted SD keeps popping up.
The "Clear All" button in recents is in a bad location (top right, better at bottom right)
Noticed that double tap AOD screen can wake the screen but only if you Dtap the notification or music playing. Suggested that we get full double tap anywhere to wake option.
Default e-mail does not have marked as read or delete options in notification bar.
Battery drain faster.
It may just be me but My Knox seems broken. I changed password and everything but on last attempt before lockdown but does not work.
All reported to Sammy except my Knox which may be a user error
I've had GREAT battery life, no drain.
Only issue is when I download an APK through Chrome and tap the notification to install then Package Disabler crashes. If I install it with Root Explorer it installs fine.
Android System battery hogging. Whopping 40%!
I average 8% an hour and have an average 5hr screen on time per charge cycle I think a lot of people some have some rogue apps
Battery life is much better! The main issue I'm having is no sound or vibration notification when I get a text. Sometimes I loose my data connection.
Looks like google voice doesn't work with the update. How do I report this ? I can't get any outgoing call to work through google voice

Go into the settings with for it to turn off, then manually turn it on. Also I recommend leaving it on as well as Bluetooth. There is a known bug with both of those and leaving them both on fixes the battery drain issue you will have if you try to turn them off and they keep automatically turning on/off on their own.

my battery drain issue seems to be gone.
I will however turn on the bluetooth to see if it helps/.
Haven't seen this posted, hopefully i didn't miss the post though.
When playing a game using the "Game Launcher", I always played with "No Alerts during Game" selected. But since I upgraded to the Nougat Beta, Facebook Messenger somehow still sends me messages even though it should be blocked.
Anyone else with this issue?
