So will we still have the IMEI issue even with the unlocked bootloader when flashing AOSP? I know we can fully back up our efs files but jw if its still gonna be an issue? Thanks

The IMEI issue is unrelated to the bootloader as other carrier versions have experienced the same problems.

The two are not related. I'm not sure people are entirely sure what causes the IMEI issue.
Most claim it's from flashing AOSP roms however others have reported the same issue even when flashing stock ROMS or flashing nandroids.
I'm assuming if the devs here are bright enough to crack the bootloader, a fix for the IMEI issue will arise soon.
My limited understanding thus far is that you can back up the IMEI, you can restore the IMEI with or without a backup, however there may be a problem with the phone roaming after all is said and done.
Personally I'm holding tight a little longer to see if there is a resolution to the IMEI issue

So I came from 2 HTC devices, the incredible then the rezound and almost never saw stories about bricks or anything of that nature. Almost anything you did could be easily fixed by running an ruu. Anyways, now I'm here and looking through the thread there seems to be a lot of people with bricks and missing radio info( not sure what that's about?) And all sorts if different issues. Anyways, my question is, how much easier is it to hard brick a gs3 compared to other HTC devices?

Most people claiming bricks don't actually have one, and anyone who has actually bricked their phone has almost certainly done something wrong. There is a strange IMEI issue and data loss which is supposedly fixable with QPST. Still, don't ever remember having IMEI issues ever before.

Ok so how badly do you have to screw up to get a hard brick? Also, what is qpst?

To hard brick, you pretty much need to flash the wrong thing to the wrong place.
QPST is Qualcomm Product Support Tools, a tool used for some things (including backing up NV/IMEI)

So just by flashing romsn I'm not gonna have an issue with flashing stuff to the wrong place correct? They all include scripts that make sure of that. Also I know we got the bootloader unlocked recently. Is that similar to S-off on HTC devices?

Flashing ROMS shouldn't hurt anything if you do it properly/don't do anything stupid in ODIN and have an NV/IMEI backup. I would wait until the IMEI issues are sorted, personally. You can still lose data, your IMEI and be stuck in roaming. I don't know how many people have used QPST backups of their NV to fix their IMEI problems.
I don't know about S-off so I can't comment on any similarities, but with the bootloader unlocked you can flash custom roms/kernels.

The QPST fix takes like 10 minutes and works fine, without leaving you stuck in roaming, and is even faster if you had the foresight to use QPST to make a backup beforehand. At this point, it's not really something to be worried about unless you're crack flashing at a time when you wouldn't have access to a computer to fix it.

Sounds good then. I hadn't heard of many people using QPST backups to restore their IMEI yet.
Does one ever really NEED to update your recovery? I currently have a very early version of koush's touch recovery (v5.0.1? or 5.1.0 something). and also, if i update my recovery, will it erase my entire sd? (like when initially flashing a custom recovery) Thank you

No it won't erase anything.
And it depends on which version you have. Some versions had bugs that got corrected, some have new features. It's not necessary most of the time unless you got a very old one with bugs, obviously.

Although it's not "vital" to update the recovery, it's always worth doing so.
having it updated means new feats has been added or bugs have been ironed out.
I, for example, lost my IMEI due to something wrong happened while flashing, caused by either the .zip or the recovery, not sure which one though...

Likely the zip, not the recovery.
What did losing your imei do? Where you blackballed from your network? Some of us would like not to have a dna-like identification number.

Hey guys, so I was running MIUI for about 3 days when all of a sudden after class one day my phone literally wouldnt receive or send texts or calls and when I tried to call something it said no data available...I tried everything, I've wiped data/cache/dalvic, restored a backup, flashed a stock radio, a rooted radio, and even used odin to flash back to stock. My flash counter was never incremented, my bootloader is relocked, I even installed the latest Verizon update to ensure I wasn't rooted anymore. I don't know what to do, can somebody maybe help me? I'm lost and I don't wanna go back to my old phone, any help at all would be more than appreciated...
You have lost your IMEI, fried your SIM, or just need to reprovision your SIM. I would try the reprovision first, but it will wipe all of your data. You can do a search and it will give you the dialer code.
That sucks man. I cant help you with your radio problem but if you unrooted and updated through verizon successfully cant you just take it back. It should still be covered under warrenty. i hope you get it figured out, Good Luck.

Also I have checked my phone info and my phone number is still there as well as my IMEI, I don't know what happened. If my bootloader is locked, flash counter is decremented and I'm back on stock can take it to Verizon safely? also how do I tell if my bootloader is locked and flash counter is decremented when im not rooted? just to be sure

I would reflash the Hyperdrive ROM with no theme. I've had that happen a few times when applying a theme to my ROM. if you flash the Hyperdrive ROM and it still doesn't work I'd flash a different ROM.
After flashing, (of course after full wipe) test calls and messages and contacts apps. Then if you flash a mod or theme after that. Try your phone, text and contacts again. If they do not work, then your theme has borked them.
I have tried re flashing the ROM and still nothing i wiped everything that needed to be wiped before flashing and still nothing. I didn't think a theme would make this happen. But I guess another ROM wouldn't hurt to see if it works then. Will post back after and I might need some help though if it does not work

Go to System Settings > About Phone > Status. Under IMEI there should be a 15 digit number. If it's missing or just says 0 then you lost your IMEI, which is basically your phone's network ID number. Also is your phone number correct as listed in that menu?

Assuming you didn't make a back up, you're going to have to restore it. Here's the link to a tutorial: http://droidmodderx.com/galaxys3/?page_id=79
It is pretty involved so make sure you read the instructions carefully. Are you familiar with ODIN, because the first thing you have to do is flash back to a stock rooted ROM. Use this thread for that: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762204
If you don't feel comfortable doing all of it I would get somebody that does. You can easily hard brick your phone using ODIN. Also, ODIN will completely erase your internal memory. So I would make a backup of any photos/files you need before proceeding.

Yeah i have a friend that helped me use Odin but hes not on Skype and he won't be anytime soon i believe, i don't trust myself doing it alone.
The first thing I would try would be to flash the mbf1 radio.
I have had similar issues and that's the easy fix.

I haven't heard of this fixing the missing IMEI issue but if it does that's excellent! It would be so much easier. Give it a try, it couldn't hurt.

He is right, getting your imei back is only halfway home. Your ERI should say 5 and under mobile network is should say Verzion Wireless. Some people have said using Odin to go back to stock and reprovisioning your phone with a numerical keypad entry works but I can't comment because I recovered mine without doing that. Try this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=45019832&postcount=3

I do recommend once you get your phone straightened out go to the Synergy rom thread and find the zip to backup your imei and eri and put it away for safe keeping just in case.
i am a owner of SGH-I997 and had unlocked it previously but now somehow the IMEI number has been replaced with [email protected]# instead of the numbers like 87131 so is there any way to restore the IMEI back??? it just doesnt recognise any of the sim cards plz help

Can someone please help. I flashed a wrong kernel to the beanstalk rom and bricked my phone. I used odin to restore factory firmware and had no imei after. I found the efs.tar on here for odin to restore the imei. I got an imei back on my phone but not the correct on. When i called to have the phone put on my account i was told that the imei number is in use on another carrier. Now i have back ups of my efs folder on my computer but they are not encrypted into a tar. Can they be encrypted into a flashable tar i cud use with odin to restore my imei. Now i am a noob on the whole android flashing thing i have learned alot through trial and error i do have knowledge of pc software and hardware so im not totally in in dark. If anyone could please help it would be extremely appreciated.
