Build.prop and minFree editing is must - Asus Transformer TF700

I have never rooted before, but this time I did. I am not unlocking as somewhat afraid of losing warranty and potential stock jellybean. Couple nights ago I used my wife's ipad2 and noticed how blurry texts are. But browsing speed were much faster. So before my return period ends, I have decided to give a last chance and do the tweaks recommended by d. The result is amazing. This is how asus should ship the device as. So if you are afraid of custom rom, or thinking performance is below the expectation, before giving up do this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1758160

Remember to backup your original build.prop so when otas arrive you can still receive them.

I almost forgot how great custom roms were until I got stuck with stock.

Long story short, I had to call att warranty department to get my phone replaced due to my speaker starting to go out. So when I called it in on the 8th (September), which was the last day for my warranty, I flashed back to stock, restored product code, backed up entire sd, and upgraded to official froyo. So since that time I have been on stock patiently waiting my new phone to come in. I've been on customs so long that I forgot how slow and unresponsive stock is. I remember that as I got spoiled with customs that I felt that those roms were starting to feel slow themselves and that although they're faster then stock, maybe it's more of a placebo that I really think it's that much faster then stock. Alas, I was mistaken. All in all I just want to say thank you to the devs of this great community. Being on these custom roms we sometime take for granted that your work, and although not always perfect, it is still far more superior then anything the stock experience can offer. If you don't feel this way right now, just go stock for almost a week and you'll feel my pain. :¬[
Thanks again xda devs.

I'm in the exact same boat; broke my captivate I got last year, almost bought an iphone (wtf was I thinking), but instead decided to call insurance and get a new captivate; amazing how big a difference the ROMs make, the stock is such sh*t (not to mention how far behind the captivate was on updates ;[ )
Finally got my replacement in. It's a 1010 so ill miss my 1007. Oh well. Time to get rid of this 3e recovery and flash.

God! Don't even MENTION iPhones in this company! I've spent the last several DAYS trying to get sh*t off my dad's iphone (songs and the like) so he can put them on his new Captivate.
The changes you have to go through--and programs you have to download--to be able to do what you can do with an Android just by rooting it and getting a decent file manager leaves me speechless... or at least the many words I've used would be incredibly inappropriate on a site that doesn't specialize in murder and mayhem. I've used curse words over the last three days that I didn't even know I knew.
I'm not close to be anything like a real geek, but I swear, I can't imagine why anyone would want a phone from a company that makes it so hard to adjust and take items you actually purchased off of (can you say "DRM"?). The only good news is, my Dad likes the Cappy enough that we will likely never see an iPhone in this house again.
Thank Heavens.
I completely agree with you, I try my best to remember on a daily basis how great-full I am for the Dev's and XDA.
After making sure I have a way to get back to kb2 and backing up my old phone I just half an hour ago flashed miui. Good bye slow stock . I used to stay away from this rim because I heard of bad battery. But with a galaxy s 4g 1650 mah battery I bought from a friend for 7 dollars, it's not so bad

It is not that you didn't know that you knew them so much as you did what I do somedays. You went thru everyone that you knew and then started to join them together in new combos and when you had done every combo you could think of you started inventing new ones. Most people do that instead of running head first into a wall repeatedly or jumping into traffic. I must say both of those would be better than an iphone

My husband rooted his phone, but otherwise had stock Froyo ever since he got his phone. He used to make fun of me for constantly trying new roms out. But he started getting more and more pissed off with his phone and how laggy and unstable it was, and a few weeks ago I offered to flash him a custom rom.
He uses his phone much much more, and I hear a lot fewer curse words out of his mouth now that he isn't cussing at his phone anymore.
Word that homie. I would die without my roms. To me Roms are the number one biggest reason why i like android over iPhone.

I agree with that, after I flashed cm7 and was on that for a few days. I deleted my froyo backups. No point in going back, been flashing nightlys now. Can't do that on a non-android phone
I will always keep my stock nandroid just incase I have to warranty

[Q] Is a G2x worth it if forced to use a stock build?

My company is moving our mobile devices to a security software called MobileIron, which among other things is able to detect and block out rooted phones. I searched xda to see if anyone had experience with MobileIron, but not many results.
Anyway, I had narrowed my next phone purchase down to the G2x, but now I'm wondering if I should reconsider, since I'll be forced to use a stock build as I need to have it connected to work.
Any opinions on using the G2x "as is"? Presuming anyone here still remembers when theirs was stock

NO, whatever you do, do not get a G2x if you plan to use it stock. With custom ROMs however, it can easily compare to the Galaxy S II, and beat (IMO) the Galaxy Nexus, seeing as the GPU is outdated and that the highest stable clock speed I've seen on it is 1.35 (whereas some G2x users have been able to clock up to 1.66/1.7, it is rare though.) and normally clock at 1.56-1.6. Why does your carrier care about rooting? Seems like horse**** to me.
Root detection is listed:

There's other information which can be read for security purposes which would disable the phone from being used on the network and/or with email, etc.
They would have to furnish me a phone. The one I own, is mine to do as I see fit, but that is just me.

I have had the g2x for about a week, I played around a bit and installed some rom's and kernels to try them out. But at the end of the week I am back to the stock rom with a custom kernel. But then again I have always enjoyed the vanilla look for android.

True I am on stock, but with root you can freeze or remove the bloat from T-Mobile making the phone a litter snapper.

IMHO The g2x isn't a good "stock" phone.... If you can't even root it then forget about it, never mind install a custom rom.... Random shutdowns, sod, poor call quality (for me on the wind version) outdated operating system.... go with something that is awesome "out of the box"
If you can find a work around for the security app then go for it.
Just my 2 cents..
Pin it to Win it.
My company subsidizes the purchase of the device and the plan. However, part of the deal is no-rooting; and as pointed out by Core Memory, if the MobileIron product detects rooting the phone is disabled from email access, which thereby nullifies the subsidy.
I'm going to be on the T-Mobile family value plan (no longer a fan of post paid plans), so I need to buy the device outright and the G2x has everything I want and more for a reasonable price. I've just been a bit concerned about the problems with the stock rom; and would prefer to root it anyway. Of course, it would present for some interesting testing to see how far I could get rooting the phone without being detected
Thanks to everyone for the helpful input!
Its a great phone overall, just has horrible battery life. You should consider a 3500mah battery if it has to be stock, its definetly provided me double to triple the battery life I got on stock.

I don't know what people are complaining about. I'm still running stock. I am rooted, but I actually haven't done anything with the root. Same for my ex-wife. Neither of us have experienced freezes, random shut downs, boot loops, and no issues with GPS locks (only takes between 2 to 5 seconds on a bad day).
I will tell you this, though...battery sucks on wifi, lol. If I have it turned off, my phone can go for a good day and half on light usage. But as soon as the wifi kicks on, bye-bye battery life, lol.
I'm sure there are better phones out there, i'm just giving you my experience. This phone seems to be a "hit-and-miss" type of phone. You might get a problem free phone, you might not. I'm guessing we don't have issues since we bought ours after all the updates, maybe? Either that or we both just got lucky, lol.

Yep. G2x with stock rom=potentially (though not necessarily definitely) one of the worst phones you'll ever have to use in your life. 2.3.3 solves most of the problems it had out of the box. Mine on 2.2 simply would get an SOD (screen of death) anytime I tried to turn the screen on. Even on 2.3 stock, some people are still reporting random reboots, SODs, and boots that can't be achieved without re-inserting the battery. No fun at all if you get a bad phone that got past crappy QC.
But G2x with flashed rom=arguably one of the best bargains you can get. Rocking mine with EB rom and Trinity Extreme Edition, overclocked to 1.58ghz and undervolted.
One glaring weakness: Horrid battery life. Get an extended battery. I got a 3500mah battery with a replacement door for $9 on fleabay. Phone is twice as thick, but the battery life has increased dramatically.
No, while I've never had problems with stock G2x many have and it just isn't worth the risk. If you're looking for an old cheap phone then I would consider the MT4G or even the G2 if you're looking for a stable stock ROM. Both phones are fast as they are as well.

Will not having bloatware decrease our chances on cheesecake?

So, I have heard that motorola looks for the bloatware that came on our phones when we look for updates. That being said, will this decrease our chances on cheesecake?
I for the longest time had much of the bloatware deleted off my phone. It's half the reason I root.
Until yesterday, when I had a little developer hiccup and had to flash the fxz.
This time I am keeping the bloatware on hoping to up my chances of finding that golden ticket in cheesecake.
All this to say, How "stock" should we really be while searching cheesecake to get the best chances?
Sent from my MB865 using xda premium
It should not affect cheesecake. Only when you go to install the update. Im on stock waiting for ics to drop. Im leaving my phone as is for now because i know as soon as ics is released ill be like a kid on Christmas day ready to install it.
Sent from my MB865 using xda premium
Ah, kid on Christmas is right.
The good news is that hopefully whoever gets it first will be smarty enough to post it here for the rest of us also.
Sent from my MB865 using xda premium
Bloated or not, it should have not affect the update process. In fact, I seem to remember FXZ'ing back to 2.3.5. and then rooting (jumping over the step to OTA to 2.3.6.) and checking for update after rooting. My phone found the 2.3.6. update, and I realized I had done this out-of-sequence. So, I FXZ'd again, OTA'd and then rooted. I have seen though that if you are rooted when an update appears, and after installing it, it will break root on your device. Just what I've seen/heard -for what it's worth...
Missing bloat will not have any impact on cheesecake, but it will prevent the update from actually installing once downloaded.
Motorola has checks in the OTAs to make sure that all of the bloatware is still on the phone, it does not give a crap about anything else, just that the bloatware is installed, and that you are listed as being on a stock ROM/build in the build.prop file.
Again all of this has noting to do with a cheesecake check since it is just logging into Motorola servers and doing a search for any update files for the edison phones (it gets that from your build.prop). If you have changed your phone to show as some other phone in the build.prop then change it back as that will make cheesecake not work properly.
Thanks guys. Just didn't want to hinder my constant search for the holy grail.

[Q] bought the TF700. return?

Just found out about the MAJOR lag issues surrounding it I have 14 days to return it. I was looking for a $400 tablet, not too old with good battery life and came across this.
Do the clean and cromi-x roms 'renew' it completely?
Would you have returned your tablet and gotten something else if you'd known this would happen??
Should i return it, or just keep it (and flash)?
I keep hearing people saying to get the nexus 10, but even that has its issues apparently (battery drain + slow charging).

Yes, clean rom cromi, cm10.1, etc.. speed up the device very well! it will fly
I own a TF300T and we have basicly the same thing on stock rom: very bad lag! so if you like stock i would reccomend crom-x/cleanrom or TF700 specific roms based on stock
Honestly i would return it and save the money for some upcoming device. It's one year old,you have to unlock it (and loose your warranty) in order to have more decent performance and you will mostlikely end-up spending more time to tweak the device than actually enjoy it.Ofcourse this is only my opinion, the final decision it's up to you.

If I had it to do over again...it would go back. Sorry to say that but you should NOT have to make ANY changes to a tablet that is supposed to be at the top of the line. My wife's AT105-T1032 Toshiba, is a lot more stable than the TF700.
Here are some of MY problems:
ANY browser will loose input from the onscreen keyboard...doesn't matter if it's Asus KB or Swiftkey or Google
The lag is so bad at times the KB won't appear for a second or two
ANY browser will just force close for no appearent reason...doesn't happen often but it does happen
The screen is loose on the lower right corner, I thought this issue had fixed itself but I noticed it again the other day
When posting on forums none of the browsers work correctly. They make it a horrible experiance and I usually have to give up and go to my PC to complete posts I want to make. If you insert a word that was mispelled it usually will appear at the top of the post you are making and delete any text it replaces. VERY VERY frustrating and has been an issue for me from day 1. (a year ago)
Here's how I intend to fix them:
When the warranty is up I will try rooting and unlocking and a different ROM. If I can't get that to make it work right for me I WILL take it out in the driveway and beat the living crap out of it, place it in a box and send it back to Asus with a detailed explanation of why they now have it in their hands
Now- it's your decision to make and you will probably read a lot of negitive replies as well as see quite a few on the forums about TF201 and TF700. It seems like people go to the forums to complain not realizing that they aren't supported by Asus. So get ready for more like this one but also you'll get quite a few saying how great this tablet is. It still all comes down to YOU.
I have NEVER been this frustrated by any computer and I'm not a happy Asus customer. BUT I will still buy Asus products, just no more tablets. I have an old P5GPL (P4) Asus motherboard that has been running for 8-9? years and has never given me one days trouble. I've replaced everything around it, power supply, hard drive and video card and it just keeps on keepin' on!

@Pretoriano80, after being on the custom rom for some time, do you see it using too much memory or getting sluggish? It's one year old but the new 10inch tablets are $500 and up. what option do i have?
I looked through your all in one guide but wouldn't know where to start since my tablet is already updated to 4.2.1.
So how would one unlock the bootloader if the instructions listed were for version below 4.2.1?
Does it mean Id have to downgrade to ICS first?
Also don't know what comes first, unlocking or rooting. Just rooting the device will not allow installation of Cromi-x/cleanRom right?
Please please return it...I know you will be tempted to unlock and install CROMI. But don't....I am using the tablet for the last 6 months I think. If it weren't for CROMI, I would have jumped over it in anger.
Please just return it, and get a better tablet.

You can ROOT your device without unlocking your bootloader, but you can't install custom roms and a custom recovery in this case, just some apps that need rooting or some tweaks. The good part with only rooting is that your warranty will still be valid because you can return to a clean stock rom anytime. For rooting your device on 4.2.1 you will have to use MotoChopper (search in the tf700t forum).
If you unlock the bootloader then you can kiss goodbye your warranty and enjoy custom roms, custom kernels, etc but you can't go back to a bootloader locked state anymore.
No matter what you will choose (root or unlocking) don't expect miracles or else you will be disappointed. The first time you install a rom you will notice much gain in performance, but after you install some of your favourite apps you will see the performance going down again (imho this is also the reason why you can find bad and good opinions about this device, because everyone use it in different ways). Also forget about benchmarks it won't do any good to you or the device itself and you will just end-up just hunting higher scores.
I really don't know which device to recommend you becaause i only have this one, but read some reviews from trusted sites (Engadget for example was maybe one of the few to do a honest review about the tf700t) or wait until some new generation devices will be released.
Btw one year ago i paid 500€ just for the tablet so paying 500$ now for a new generation device it's in line with the tablet market in my opinion, so once again mate, it's your call.
Even with cromi or cm10.2 the tablet lags. It's not good enough! RETURN RETURN RETURN!
I actually love this tab. I did do a lot of research before buying it though so I knew some issues before I bought so I also knew that I was not going to buy one for full retail and be happy. I did a lot of hunting around on craigslist and ended picking up a 64GB tab with the docking station and quite a few accessories for a little less than half of retail. I then immediately unlocked and rooted it, installed CROMI-X, and tried a coupe different kernels until I found the combination that worked for me. Finally I created a Nandroid of this setup and started using the tab.
I did have experience rooting and ROM'ing as well so I knew that I would be comfortable with that aspect and I always try to stay a little behind the curve of teh latest gadget so others can figure out how to fix the issues (because for every device there are issues).
As of right now I couldn't be happier. I got a tab that does everything I need it to and it seems sufficiently fast and responsive to me.
Would I have been happy if I paid full price a year ago and had to suffer through all of the issues that I hear being talked about on this forum? No. but at half price and time to give the great and dedicated developers on this site a chance to address the worst of the issues, Hell yeah, Great tab :good:
Just my experience so far.

Try cm 10.2 no more lag at all:thumbup:
I agree with everyone here. Return it. If you want a tablet right now just get the Nexus 10 or maybe even the Toshiba Excite Pro or sony experia z. If you want a kb dock get the HP slatebook x2 which I just bought and it a very speedy and smooth tablet. Screen isn't as high contrast and cant get as bright but it's not too bad. But if you can wait just wait for Asus to release the new Infinity pad and hopefully it performs as well as the slatebook x2. I have gotten so used to the tf700 that I did not realize how bad it really is even with cromi x or data2sd mod compared to the slatebook. So please take everyone's advice on this one.
EDIT: Posted too early and did not read your post about returning it. Good for you!

I tried it and does get rid of transition stutter but it still lags here and there. It's still in its early stages so maybe it will get better but thats a big risk the OP will have to make.

Try CROMi-X 4.7. The only lag I get is on wake up since I disable wifi in deep sleep. No transition/scrolling lag whatsoever, browsing is lightning fast.

I've been on cromi x for a while now. You must've set your transition to 0 to not notice any lag in transition. There's still I/O issue no matter which cromi version or kernel. Anyway were getting off subject. Thanks for the advice. Let's get back on topic.

RETURN IT. 10 months with this tablet suffering lag -.-
I would if I could and just grab a nexus 10 or perhaps the new nexus 7.
P.S: I use cromi, still a failure. My droid razr dual core beats this quad so badly...

Try my latest beta version - I found some settings that may help some of the IO issues when downloading files or using the sdcard.

(Discussion) What is the first thing you do when you get a new phone?

So, I'm just curious. What is the first thing you do when you get a new phone and go through the initial setup?
And, how long do you run the stock ROM before you root and flash?
I will normally download and install a different launcher and set up my screens with my apps and widgets.
Or I will see what kind of bloatware I have and how much available storage I have to work with.
The first phone I had was the Droid X2 which I didn't root until about 10 months after I got it. I researched and read about the basics of rooting then finally decided to take the plunge after a few months.
The second phone I had was the S3 on VZW. I had it less than one months before I rooted it and flashed a Custom ROM. I just couldn't take the ui of TW.
I eventually sold it after 3 months and bought a VZW Galaxy Nexus in near mint condition. I unlocked and rooted it the first day I had it. I am still on the stock ROM after having it for a week. I couldn't be happier with the performance. The battery life is horrible, of course, but I am always near a charger.

What I do
I will restore my previously downloaded apps, root it, flash new rom if possible
rooting it and removing bloatware then searching in the net searching for custom rom.
Update rom and root.
removing bloatware, apps and services i don't use
Root! Root! Root!
I root my phone. Then I install Titanium Backup and back everything up. Then I start looking at new roms.
Read through preferences and adjust them.
Root it... Flash it...

Yep...best and easiest to do when you have no data to back up on the phone.

Agreed.
I got a new LG G2 a week ago, checked out how bad the stock rom looked and felt, and just went to cyanogen, then re-did my apps/launcher.
Then comes the inevitable sleepless nights on xda and other sites, just fumbling with the device.
I kept my Note 2 stock for about 4 months or so, nearly busted it rooting it too as TWRP doesn't like the LTE model, so I have to go with the CWM recovery, which I'm not a huge fan of.
Run some benchmarks (just curious), install apps, sign in on my accounts, customize homescreen/wallpaper/ringtones, etc.
I don't root (call me lame if you want to).

When i bought my S4, i told myself i would try and leave it alone and use it the way it came. After about 20 minutes using touchwiz, i was rooting and installing custom roms. I guess once you start, it's hard to go back =/
I usually fool around with the settings and install at least 50 apps that are my daily runners

My first thing is structure of the Device / Configuration and then the appearance .
I restore my data form previous phone (contacts, messages, appointments, apps, etc.).
In this order:
Root it, back up the factory image, remove bloatware, tweak settings for performance, restoring settings from previous device reload all my apps, make another backup.
The only thing I left out was flashing a new ROM i'll do only after i'm sure the device is not a defect breaking down all the time by stress testing the hell out of it.
Sell it for crack and then steal another one to keep the cycle going... lol j/k
why can't just enjoy the new phone
camera n specs
the first thing u do wen I get phone is.... check d clearance or clarity of camera..... n few specs like ram, rom... processor
