multi screen questions - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, I know its kinda early as most of you probably don't even have the note yet, but I was curious on how the multiscreen feature works. Can you use it with any app or just Samsung's special apps. Also is the feature packaged as an apk in system app files as to have the possibility of being pulled from the note and ported to other tablets. Thanks, and enjoy your new tablets.

As for now, it only works with Samsung Apps.
Maybe a custom Rom can change that, or a root app.

I was wondering this as well. I'm hoping there will be some way for third party apps to make use of it, but I'm thinking that's probably a pipe dream.

Its a great feature but only works for samsung apps sadly

To make it useable for other apps, Google would need to amend Android to support a virtual split screen. As long as split screen is not part of the OS itself, it will remain a specific solution.

I think the apps that in the multi screen is quite good, you have the snote, internet, polaris and email.

To all that would like to see this in non Samsung apps: send a question to @Samsung-dev twitter asking them to publish an API for this. It may not help but it cant hurt. I for one would love to see a published API for this and the mini apps. They have one For S-Pen, why not for these features also. Should be a value add for their tablet if there were community apps that could use this stuff.

Thanks was wondering about adding apps with UEALI3. Would have been great to add ezPDF to it.

This ability is part of the touch wiz interface.. Its a propitiatory patented framework Samsung will not share it with anyone. Trying to port it can cause severe security issues as this is based on pop up notifications. This is the reason the cornerstone split screen software has not went very far. There was a big write up about this and the cornerstone software on xda tv months back. I looked and cant find it

Currently on ics it's only possible with samsung apps. But as seen with the Jelly Bean updates in India it's going to change to all apps.

Can someone who has it already tell us how the look and feel is for the split screen.
I'm thinking about buying it to replace my 8.9 tab

[Q] any app which makes Admin/user accounts, for kids tab2

Is there any app for tab which makes Admin/user accounts, so kids can be safe & restricted to their user account & privileges.
I am planning to buy a tab for my kid, on my phone they mess up by opening non related apps & setting changes like enabling /disabling wifi bluetooth & many other settings.
I found an app called kids place (actually its a launcher) which restricts the kids to an extent but was looking for a better option with proper control as admin has on computer.
kids place actually restricts them from the tablet interface all together, that not what I want. Interface should be available to them but they should be restricted to certain privileges, they should not be able to change settings & use apps which are not assigned to them.
if you get an tab that has jellybean, you can create 2 accounts with terminal emulator. with other account you cant change settings, atleast the more sensitive ones. you can hide apps etc

Tab2 as of now is being shipped with ICE 4.x.x version not sure if samsung will upgrade it to jellybean.
Only google nexus 7 tab is being shipped with jellybean which is already overbooked, I would have to wait for months getting that.

That would be awesome if that is true but meanwhile I found what I was looking for the app already exist but I never came across earlier neither in play store nor at xda saw anyone discussing it.
SwitchMe is a unique application for root users that allows you to log in and out of multiple installations of Android just as you would on a desktop computer.

Will we see expanded multi screen capabilities similar to the Note 2

I know no one has a crystal ball, but I wondered if anyone had seen or heard anything about expanded multi screen capabilities. The Note 2 allows gmail, chrome, YouTube, Facebook, twitter and more to be split screen. I would love that even more on our device, what with the bigger screen.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
Not for sure but I would guess that will come with the jb upgrade
many are using the beta update can anyone confirm the same being present ?? I think most of the updates seen in note2 should come but after a certain period of time
Paul obrien has posted the modifications to insert in the applications code to make them work in note2 multiview. Do you know if the same code can be used to make them work in multiscreen on the note 10.1??? Thanks!

Adding apps to MultiScreen - Is it similar to the Note II?

On the Note II, multiscreen apps are apparently dictated by a whitelist. The folks in the Note II forum have figures out how to edit said list to include user installed apps. Does anyone have any insight into whether or not jelly bean is bringing the same sort of method for multiscreen?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
I had read this somewhere and I do not know how true it is for apps to be able to do multscreen extra codes needs to be written in app for it to work irrespective of whether note will allow it to do it or not

What do you like/dislike about 4.4 for the Note 3?

Just thought I would make a thread comparing and compiling what people like and dislike about the latest 4.4 update for the Note 3. Personally I've found the update to be much of the same, however Samsung has made some annoying decisions too.
Likes
- Unlocking the phone is SO much faster!
- The new white icons look much better than Samsung's usual green ones.
- The new Notification shade looks more in-touch with modern Android styling.
- General speed all over.
Dislikes
- One feature of KitKat was Native Emoji support Samsung's default messaging app converts to MMS when you insert an Emoji.
- Samsung has included the most UGLY emoji's ever! These were already native on the Note 3 but I thought they would have switched to Google's.
- The fact Samsung even included a messaging app; why not just switch to Hangouts.
- The camera seems to be a bit laggier after the update, processing in dark images takes longer and is prone to blurriness.
- If you set a password or numeric code, when you unlock your phone unlike an iPhone or HTC you do not have to swipe. It goes straight to the input.
- General Samsung bloatiness and lag.
Overall I feel like KitKat has "refreshed" the Note somewhat, but I think that KitKat is not a major upgrade for the Note 3 at all, and it feels more like a .x upgrade. After using the Nexus 5, it really doesn't feel like the Note 3 is using 4.4, it feels much the same as 4.3.

Dislikes:
- Not using ART (Android Runtime)
Wasn't that the biggest innovation in KitKat?
- Again Samsungs country cluttering
On the new polish ROM learning hub, Music and Bookstore not working/downloadable in Germany
- AppOPS no native support
- SDcards getting useless more and more... wonder when we will not be able to move anything there - well we still can pay 100bucks per 16Gb more storage on phone

ART is still technically in beta form. Samsung will never add a beta to their final rls. If something messes up it makes them look terrible (more so than they already do..)

What I Like:
Awesome speed and smooth.
Better Audio quality.
Finally no more ugly green icon at status bar.
Much better camera output quality especially at night shoot. Sharp and clear.
Love the new lockscreen especially the music playback button.
What I Dislike:
S View chipset detection, now only original Samsung will work, not working for counterfeit include those branded like Spigen.
Disable of ART, I know it is beta but at least let use tryout.
Is there a chance to get the stock-emojis (google) back?

Though I see your point, I felt this is a general discussion amongst the Note 3 community. I'm inviting people to discuss what they like and do not like about the 4.4 update, though I understand the title alienates this.

'Tis a shame, though it's most likely down to the beta.

I hope, the ones Samsung include are so ugly!

Like
- Better colour when using the multimedia dock
- less buggy when detecting keyboard and mouse plugged into the dock
Dislike
- Non working un-official S-View covers (forcing rip off price official ones or nothing)
- Lower gaming performance (or so the Epic Citadel benchmark shows with lower phone performance, and locked at 30fps on HDMI)
- Sort of a like in that there is now landscape support for the non Multimedia Dock screen, but a major dislike that it's still the poor chopped off bottom row implementation that 3rd parties offer, the official version should at least have a layout that fits all the icons on the screen.
- Hit and miss SD card support, I find it either works really slow when trying to access it or seemingly doesn't work at all.
I can see this firmware being followed by a stream of bug fixes as it feels very beta, I wouldn't be surprised if it was the buggy beta accidentally released.
They better not abandon sdcard support, I didn't pay extra $$$ for the Google experience!

Can there be a lawsuit for this destruction of functionality?
Issue on 4.4.2 KitKat ROM - What I dislike now!
Flashing kitkat now will make the external SD almost useless. You will not be able write in certain process, example moving/copying data via third party explorer, multiple photos select for deletion at QuickPic, backup using Titanium Backup. No issue save camera photos on it or play games store at SD card. This only can be fix if you root your phone and change platform.xml and once root it is confirm 100% trip the Knox. Solution for fixing this issue [FIX][LEAKED 4.4]External Sdcard Mount Perms fix - xda-developers
KitKat ROM is detecting S View Cover Chipset, only Genuine Samsung S View Flipcover will working now. All counterfeit or any branded casing including Spigen SlimArmor View will stop the S View function once update to KitKat ROM.
There will be no downgrading back to 4.3 roms anymore after update to 4.4 KitKat ROM.
Don't play play mess with Bootloader, already got few user phone completely DEAD (cannot on or detect by PC) once mess with Bootloader.
If SD card doesn't work anymore Google can go to whatever, now I will need to block any possibility of this getting on my phone ever. I never thought I may start thinking if Windows phone wouldn't be an option for me in the future. One Crapple is enough on the phone market.

Hi, I change the statement. It can read and write but not all write process.

This is all stupid peoples fault.
if it wasn't for people being so technically inept, companies wouldn't have to cater to them by degeneratively dumbing down each and every version release.
Soon android will have no functionality, just like Apple iOS
New bootloader is required for 4.4.x is [email protected]@k joke.
-I stay away from 4.4.2 for now, wait bit longer.

Google is slowly starting to become a joke. Deciding to only update the Nexus 5 to the new "Google Experience" launcher has majorly fragmented the feel of Android through & through. I'm also starting to find that Google apps used to be robust, they are now starting to show lack of innovation and also some bugs. Take Hangouts for example, it is not a nice application to use on the Note 3 at all.

[Q] Port stock note 10.1.

I just wondering, can we port stock rom from note 10.1 2014 edition, to note 10.1 2012 edition? because the feature from 2014 editon is so rich.
No the tabs are very different and you would be setting yourself up for a brick.

I don't think there are that many features we're missing anyway. We even have the Hancom Office Suite ported to the N8000. The upcoming 4.4 update would even help our tablets catch up with the 2014 version for a while (but given the changes that Google and Samsung have made, I may consider staying with 4.1.2).

I wouldnt say all of that, there arent enough changes at the moment to really care, Jelly Bean does most everything you could want and kitkat with touch wiz overlayed isnt kit kat, and otherwise if all kitkat then your note wouldnt be a note.

Just list it out already. For me it's the lack of Tablet UI in Android 4.2+ and especially the complete removal of Tablet UI codes in 4.4. About Samsung functionality you'll see the new Pen Windows as a lot of hassles compared to N8000's Cascade View. Regarding usability, what you actually use everyday are apps, not OS. As long as 4.1 can operate with the (absolute) majority of apps that 4.4 can, I will see 4.4 as just a minor update that should only be concerned about by programmers. Don't believe completely in advertisement, it's not as big of a change as from 2.3 to 4.0.
