For what its worth:
I called *611 today finally to complain to verizon about dropped calls. I get wayyy worse voice signal with the GS3 than I did with my old DX. In fact I've had more dropped calls in the past 36 days than I have in the past 6 years with verizon (~30 so far with this phone). Btw, VRALG modem made no difference.
I was told that this is an ongoing issue and that Samsung is officially prepping another OTA to improve the radio signal but (of course) has no ETA.
I was also told to dial "###" and press send immediately after I have a dropped call (before calling the other party back.) This flags the last call as dropped and alerts verizon of my location, what tower dropped the call, etc.
I was told this would automatically open a trouble ticket. If you can flag multiple calls relatively shortly (a couple days) and then call customer service again, they will be able to offer the most help (hopefully by sending you some new hardware!!!)
Heres to hoping for better better radio update or a new GS3!!!
Must be location related as i have only had 2 dropped calls since recieving my device on 7/12.
BTW this is not "another" OTA. We never got a first one lol.

what about the VRALG update? with the new modem and kernel. I assumed it was OTA cause everyone was saying not to accept it. I never received it but I took the modem when invisiblek uploaded it.

This will be the second one. Unless you got your phone from the perorder it came with an 'updated' sticker on it which was already updated to the new radios.

Like stated, it was never a actual ota since verizon didnt release it over the air...certain devices after x date were shipped with the vralg1 software...other than the dumbed down search, there is no significant difference between vralf2 & vralg1.
It's not about location. This phone drops calls. I was talking to my dad (we both have GS3s), he was in NYC and I was in Portland. We both had to call back because our phones both dropped calls. I've dropped calls in Minnesota, Portland, San Francisco and Michigan. I know he's dropped calls in Minnesota, Miami, and New York.
I'm glad other people are having this too...I hadn't heard much about it but my phone is dropping calls like that's its job.
Shoot. Delete this please. Posted in wrong thread.
My phone hasn't dropped calls but I'm lucky to be able to place one or use data much. It constantly fluctuates from 4 bars to 1x and vice versa.

Huh....well my device must be one of a kind lol.
I have not had a dropped call on any device with Verizon, but did on a normal basis with TMobile.
+1 on the **** reception and dropped calls list. i have very noticeably worse reception, and rarely if ever dropped calls @ my place with my incredible, now they drop 2 or 3 times a conversation.
No dropped calls yet, but in a big market
Never dropped a call here.
I love how whenever a new phone comes out, these threads follow...
*sigh*

Yep, it sucks... I had a dropped call today while in my office, using a network extender. Ironically, it's a Samsung made unit as well.
No dropped calls here either. Been up and down NJ (NYC to Philadelphia and down the shore). Holding a steady 4G connection is a different story sometimes though.
I too have had more dropped calls since getting my S3 than I have over the past 3 years with my Droid 1 combined. Verizon even exchanged my first S3 for a new one, but the problem remains. This phone does everything except reliably act as a phone.
all I know is in Pittsburgh it's a miracle to get over 5 mb down and I'm pissed off. I switched from T-Mobile cause Verizon speeds are suppose to be so out of this world. I got double the speeds on T-Mobile so called fake 4g network.

Is anyone else experiencing frequent dropped calls on their Infuse? I am experiencing way too many dropped calls. I have just changed from a Blackberry to this Android phone and I'm less than happy.
Scenario: **I'm sitting on my couch and talking on the phone and I dropped the same call 4 times.**
I have also dropped calls along the highway in places that my Blackberry never dropped calls before. Furthermore, the Infuse does not alert you that your call was dropped, so you don't realize it until the person you're speaking to does not respond.
As I sit here typing this, my Blackberry has 5 bars, while my Infuse is fluctuating between 2 and 4 bars.
I have factory reset my Infuse twice already. I am on AT&T's network for both the Blackberry and Infuse.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
The infuse reception sucks .. I haven't had dropped calls but I have no service in places where I use to have 2-3 bars with the iPhone .. hopefully a update will solve this.
Also every Samsung I have ever owned has had the same problem .. why Motorola's and Nokias can have stellar reception and Samsung can't is beyond me .. the nexus s has the same problem
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
I have had just the opposite experience - I've had the Infuse get 4-5 bars signal where my old HTC Tilt2 got 1-2 and sometimes would lose signal altogether.
I have noticed the same problem. I have also noticed that the reception for all my radio's (bluetooth, wifi, and cellular) seem better when I have a case on my phone. My wife also has an Infuse and she seems to have a little better reception than me. It is very disappointing that my reception is no where near as good as my blackberry. But I have been very happy with my battery life. The Bold had get battery life and that was my greatest worry but so far my Infuse has been great in that area.
Reception appears fine to me...and identical to our inspire...but i have nothing else to compare to.
Got to play with a US att gs2 tonight. side by side it had one more bar...nothing that i thougjt was odd.

If you are in the US and still running the Rogers stock Modem/Radio you may want to switch to the latest ATT in the dev forum. Worked wonders for me....

I'm in the same boat as you....came from an iphone which never dropped calls and my infuse reception sucks and I drop calls all the time and flat out don't have service where I had it with the iphone.
I also am in the US and with AT&T so I am guessing I am out of luck with a different radio then :-/ (I am rooted with Infused 1.5.3)
yea I just rooted it with the one click method, i don't have a rom yet. I actually don't even know where to start with this thing bc my iPhone sold faster on ebay than i thought so I won't be able to switch back if i end up hating this phone. I love how big it is but the pixilated pictures and reception problems are killing me already and it hasn't even been a week yet
I need signal boosting and better zoom quality...which I'm hoping wil be fixed in an update? But i have no idea what does what for android these days.
I just got the phone but I can't get very good signal. Any reason how to fix this?
I updated prl but it still happens.
Oh I'm also using CM7.1

Network signal quality ?
Sprint doesn't have a so good quality network reputation
Maybe call in to sprint and ask about an "airrave"
I am in the same room with an Evo 3d. It gets a constant 4 bars, and can receive calls all day. My Nexus S misses about 50% of its incoming calls. (And often has 0 bars/no signal/emergency calls only, etc.)
It has been that way since day one... Any non-Nexus phone has no issues on Sprint, but the Nexus has nothing but problems. For now, I just live with it.
Lesson learned: Stay away from phones on Sprint that have signal issues. It will never get fixed.
I just talked with some of my friends on Sprint and they are getting a bad signal also. My friend has a 4S and can't connect to 3G at all since yesterday and my friend with the Epic has grey bars. It seems better than yesterday though since I actually have 2 bars in 3G.
When the NS4G first came out there were multiple complaints about the bad quality of both the phone and the data signals. People were hoping that the fault lied in the software and would be solved by updates. Well, several updates later, I don't see much difference.
The poor signaling is almost certainly hardware-based, and Sprint is not going to do anything about it at this late date.
I was having signal issues in areas with less then 3 bars for the most part. Sometimes I would randomly lose service for a few seconds here and there. My calls where dropped or the caller would cut in and out during the conversation. If your having similar issues then your phone is most likely defective.
I just got a refurbished SGS3 from Verizon and the radio works flawless compared to my VRALF2 purchased in July. I would suggest calling Verizon and complaining if your having similar problems because my phone was defective.
Software problems
Not sure how you can conclude it was your phone. Unless you tried the new radio on your old phone before swapping. Otherwise you are comparing apples to oranges.

I'm glad these radio issues haven't plagued the vzw sgs3 like they have the vzw gnex. Getting my S3 tomorrow. Hoping I get a good one, but my chances are way better with this phone than doing the refurb constant receive and send back like my g/f's Gnex. She went through 3 with radio issues before we got a good one.

I'm guessing it just a quality control issue. My girlfriend has the Moto Razor which has an great radio in it and she never had signal issues. I was beginning to think that the radio in the GS3 was just terrible. After some time with this new phone its right on par with the razor as far as call quality. Her razor still has the slight edge when it comes to signal strength.
Moto will always have the edge for the forseeable future on radio quality/reception. (notwithstanding the bionic....lol (but that was software IMHO)).
My razr's always had a better signal than any Sammy phone I've had. My HTC radios have always been pretty good also. Lets face it, Samsung's radios are their weakest link IMHO.

I'm new here, so first of all: Hi Guys!!!
I got some Issues with the radio, too. So I tried some different baseband versions with nearly no result
I currently use the LH1 baseband. Since some days I own 2 SIM's from 2 different Providers (Vodafone & T-Mobile).
Unfortunatly I only have an old Nokia N97 for Comparsion, but that doesnt matter atm.
What I've tried to figure out was, whats the source for this Issue - the phone, the provider or the baseband.
Well, I tried both SIM's in both devices and tried a few basebands for the SGS3, with the result that I got a little better Signal with Vodafone SIM and LH1-basband, than with the same baseband and T-Mobile SIM.
T-Mobile: about -105dBm
Vodafone: about -95dBm
The Signal-Strengh on the N97 is nearly identic with both SIM's.
So my final result is:
Baseband on the SGS3 sucks but can be changed to may get some better signal strengh specific for each provider!
Lets wait what official JB will change.
I just got my galaxy and where i live its a really hard to get signal area, but i have own the rezound , regular razr n maxx , galaxy nexus , and the lg and all get good service just tried this galaxy where i live at and lost 2 drop calls and text messages come as errors and thats in stock within. Its probably a little early to tell. I had my phone for 30 days before i ruled out everything but the phone itself. But I had those exact problems with mine as well.
Things that i checked for right away.
Network/Tower issue
4G Sim card
Different modem software ( I tried all 3)
Factory Reset
Different Kernels

I am on my forth Galaxy S3 for call and data dropping. I use my phone mostly at the same 2 locations, work and home and my data drops constantly on all 4 phones. I have had the sim replaced twice. I have 4 lines on my account one of which is a Droid Razr which was handed down to my girlfriend. I can't recall ever having a dropped call or data with that phone. We were in the Vons grocery store Sunday and we both wanted to d/l the Vons app. It took her less than a minutes on the Razr. It took me almost 19 min and the app is less than 2mb. My phone is still stock. Its a beautiful phone but I'm really starting to hate it.
Maybe I spoke too soon about radios not plaguing this phone. LOL.
Get mine today. I'll have an iphone 4s and gnex to compare dBm and asu numbers. (Scratch that....can't find that info on the iphone (g/f's phone)) (found how to do it....not messing with it while she's using it)
Right now my Gnex is at -87 dBm and 53 asu and I am in a very strong 4G area.
Yeah im having dropped call issues then the phone says lost service and then no sim card detected then new sim card detected and then it gets signal back. The messages the phone displays are not exactly what i stated but similar. I talked to some vzw rep on the phone and she said that i am on the edge of the 4g service area. And that 4g is fairly new where I live. Should that affect my calls though?
Btw i had a htc incredible 1 and it never gave me those issues...i feel as though the speakers were better on the incredible too.

Just keep calling back. Tell them you stayed at a friends house that has great 4G service for a few days or something similar. They gave me the same excuses. What helped me is that there are two other people in the house on the same plan that have 4G phones and they haven't dropped any calls. You have to be persistent and almost demand what you want sometimes but do it as nice and respectful as possible.
well i'll post the other side of this....I had horrible signal issues, tried replacing SIM, no luck. got new phone sent out, same problem. Coming form galaxy nexus with no probs. Calls drop, drop only parts of audio then come back etc. I am in the same places I have been for the past 6 or so years and never had problems until this phone. Can't get signal in my basement or my office, neither of which haev been a problem in the past. so if a new phone fixed it for you, consider yourself lucky.
btw what is a good signal in terms of dbm? in between work/home mine stays in between -90 to -120
I have had my SGIII for a few weeks now and also notice a lack of 4G strength, and I am in NYC. I am coming from the Droid Charge. I am holding off on doing anything until the JB update, if it comes within a reasonable amount of time...i.e. within the next month or so.
Basically, ALL Saumsung radios suck.
My old Rezound has a MUCH MUCH better radio than either my G3 or my Wife's Droid Charge.
I am talking about actual use, not how many signal bars are showing etc....

hmmm...my issue with the Charge was not so much the 'top-end speed' of the radio, which was really good when in a good area, but rather the 'glitchiness or bugginess' when switching network areas, or with certain applications. For instance, I commute on the train to NYC every day from a dominant 3G area. When the train would switch into the 4G covered area, the radio would not automatically switch over to 4G until I would either do the airplane mode trick (which worked most of the time), or I would outright have to reboot. For the rare times it WOULD switch over automatically, the speed would be terrible until I airplaned or rebooted it as above...I am sure as hell hoping I don't have these issues with the SGIII...
So I got news for everyone who is having reception problems on the Verizon Galaxy S3. Just talked to my samsung rep. He said the reception issues on all the verizon S3's are not fixable because its interfering with motorola radios or something. This only affects the s3 for verizon. There is no fix he said. Half of all verizon S3's are affected he thinks if not more. No updates or rpms or radios will fix it. So we should test something. Call verizon and complain and see if they get u an s4 haha
but my signal has always been great..
Yeah gotta say I haven't had any issues. Now my galaxy nexus, yeah that was finicky with signal. My sgs3 has been great. That reasoning sounds odd to me.

I haven't had any issues until now. My 4G has become very spotty at best over the last week. I live in San Antonio and the 4G coverage has been great across the city up until recently.
Currently not being productive on my S3.
See half of the s3's sold for verizon have 4G data problems and reception issues. Depends when you got it mine was the first batch ever made. I work for verizon and see about half come back with reception problems. They halted production I heard
I am on my 3rd s3 because of reception and gps issues. I hate to say this one is working good because I am afraid I will jinx myself in the process.

Gps issues are fixable in some aspect. Tighten screws in the back a half a turn we figured out but the reception is non fixable as thats with the radio on the hardware side of things.
i had a razr maxx hd for a couple of weeks... my s3 gets better reception/signal strength than the razr.

I just got off with VZW, The tech went through everything he could pull up on his computer. He finally said to swing into Verizon and get a new sim card.
That was all he could think of. So I'll try that. My phone has become a useless POS since yesterday.
Update:
So I went into the store, they went through my phone and replaced the sim card. Nothing helped. He offered to process an exchange for a refurbished one since I have insurance. I asked if they would give me any discount on the S4 rather than getting a used phone. He said that they have no power ( at the store) and that it would be better to go through Verizon by calling them. I went home, got on my wifi and things started to work better. I downloaded all my apps (after factory reset) and proceeded to set up my phone. I even got off my wifi and it still seemed to work good. But this morning at work, it's turned into a rock again. I've been at this job for a year and a half. I've never had issues. But since the OTA, It's like it's throttling me. I'm wondering if VZW has put something in the last OTA that affects data speeds. I'm currently trying to download one app (Sirius), It's been downloading for 5 minutes already and it's only 1/2 way. Something is up.

So I had MB1.... Full stock (plus root)...
I went ahead and upgraded using Bean's rooted MD3...
Flashed the MD3 Firmware....
No issues operationally, but I am a big commuter and use mapping a lot.
I noticed that my maps were offline several times into work today...
Having just come from a Thunderbolt, I began paying attention to the 4g... I watched the 4G/3G constantly drop and stall... Having gone through this before on the TB, I did all the network jogs, airplane mode, unfroze all the frozen apps, rebooted, davlik - etc... No joy...
Got home and checked the wife, she and I had same signal strength, just to make sure it wasn't my phone...
Saw the notes on Global to LTE and various other points - including Caller Name ID - tried them all - nothing helped.
For a quick experiment, I flashed just the modem/radio from MB1, understanding the rest of the firmware wouldn't be compatible with the net kernel... Phone functioned, same data issues...
So... I completely reversed my phone back to MB1... Now with a MB1 and a MD3 side by side, I loaded Google maps with traffic on...
The MB1 was near instantaneous with traffic indicators...
The MD3 took a few seconds as it staggered the traffic reports...
Flipped to FaceBook app... The MB1 immediately was lite up with data download/upload... MD3 paused, then started...
Strangely, the signal strength was near exact between the two phones....
But the speed and delay with the MD3 made me wipe off the MD3 and reload MB1... Happy now, without multi-windows...
Next time I'll remember to be more patient and use one phone as the dev for a few days.
I have had 4 different S3's, all of them have had rock solid 4G performance.
As an aside there is growing chatter that the most recent OTA has drastically damaged 4G connectivity. I run Synergy myself, so no OTA for me.
So i've had the N5 for 4 days now and i just recently switched to Tmobile from Sprint. When im in my house i rarely have more than 1 bar of service and frequently 0 bars. The phone seems to not automatically switch to any other mode (3g/2g). The attached screen shot is only from 4 hours of use, being outside more than inside and still only little blips of green on the mobile network connection log. I work outside and still being outside 8 hours a day still wont have much green on that log.
I dont have another phone from t-mobile to try out but it seems a few people have said that the N5 has radio issues. Not sure if this problem is phone/hardware related?
My data speeds are not the issue here, its more the cell connection for phone calls. My girlfriend has called me many times with my phone laying on the counter when the phone had 1 or 0 bars and it would never ring or show a missed call.
Ive called tmo and they said the towers are good and i that i dont have a "stong" LTE signal but it is "good". I have also went to tmo store and they swapped out the sim card for me, same issue.
The phone i have seems to be the newest batch of N5's with a 401KP serial number and a 01/13/14 manufacture date.
Im super happy with the phone overall but if not being able to receive calls from people is very frustrating and nullifies all the good that this phone has going for it.
Im in the chicago area. Anyone else having this issue?
Any advice/help is appreciated.
See my attachment. I'm on tmo as well. I usually get between 1-4 bars of LTE, yet, it is always yellow. T-Mobile is known to have issues with penetration in buildings. Here in Atlanta it seemed to have gotten way better as of the past few months to where I always have reception and good download speeds. But, there are still areas where when my phone screen is off it likes to go to no signal, and then to 2 bars when I'm using it. Although, they only happens at my gfs parents house. They all have ATT and had to get a signal booster to get service, while sprint barely gets anything there. So I guess it isn't s big deal at all since other carriers struggle more there.

Try testing HSPA+ (GSM) rather than LTE...you may find it more stable than the LTE/GSM swapover for calls.
Are you postpaid or prepaid i may be able to resolve your problem

So you are postpaid, If you call in t-mobile and ask if you quality for a signal booster as you do not have good service in home but you do outside.
Certain requirements though to get one you need to live in a single family home and not in a apartment complex the reason is because E911 wont locate you and they cannot dispatch police right away
If you are successful like I did you will get one for free and I also got it 1 day overnight express

They still give it out.. under certain environments for example we have 5 lines and 3 are iPhones and 2 are Nexus 5's
all of them are incapable of wifi calling. so they had to just give one to us..
I also kissed ass to them saying that i love t-mobile but i just wished i had service inside.
the rep transferred me to a lady named Donna, i kissed her ass too and got it shipped 1 day overnight express Lol
overall just be kind and kiss ass

1)Remember call in state that you have service near your window but you cannot be at a window every time to make a call
2) ask if you quality for a signal booster and when they say if you have any connected walls or shared walls something inbetween those lines state no
3)They're going to do some troubleshooting if you have edge in or 1bar of 4g or LTE TURN ON Airplane mode they're actually going to ping the device state on the mobile network (testing to see if you're a lier)
Tips: Kiss ass, complement things like i love t-mobile etc, be patient and have a nice happy voice, call using another phone NOT on t-mobile..
i hope this helps! :good:

It supports EDGE/HSPA and t-mobile newly refarmed 1900pcs HSPA
its pretty future proof as HSPA will be here long. besides HSPA is what makes the calls not LTE
better to have some data and calls than no calls and data at all..
it also conserves battery life as the signal is strong and your device wont have to search for signals

You said to TURN ON airplane mode when i call them?
Sweet talking is the only way you can get free stuff usually.
I see you have a backup tmobile phone... Does it get the same reception in the house as your N5 does?

Yeah,, you have to be valuable to TMO to get this (ala multiple postpaid lines). The last case I saw here was months ago, and he went all the way to retention before they sent him a cel-fi. Regular CSR's may not have the option on their system.
WRT, HSPA+, use phoneinfo app (market) to toggle GSM-only/LTE settings.

Was he a single line or more than 1 line before being sent to customer retention

IIRC (from Nexus 4 forum), he had two lines, was over $120/mo, and had played CSR roulette trying for a cel-fi. After he said he wanted to cancel (he TRULY had poor coverage at home) and got a hold of retention, he was able to eek one out. Most fora say their cel-fi supply has been drained, however, based on user reports.
The main reason I was following this was for a business client of mine. He's 'last mile' internet, despite dead fiber running down his street less than 20 feet away. He currently pays over $400/mo for ISDN 1.5 synchronous 2yr/contract. Yet, I get over 40MBPS at his location on TMO, outdoors, but drop to near nothing inside his metal buildings. I'm unable to convince him TMO is capable of business-critical uptime, but I think a cel-fi in his window could go a long way towards convincing him.
