Portable Computer Conversion - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Three days ago, my computer drew its last breath. Knowing I would not be able to get another for a little while, I decided to make due with what I had......My Skyrocket. Here is what I did, with some pics.
Let me start by saying that my case is a cover/belt holster combo with a kickstand. Next, I bought an OTG cable from Amazon for around $5. There are some much cheaper, but I hate waiting the shipping time from Hong Kong. Then at Wal-Mart, I picked up an Onn USB 2.0 hub for $11, and an Onn wireless keyboard on clearance for $7. So for my project, I only spent $23. Everything else I already had lying around. The Hub and the OTG cable are attatched to the back of my case by a velcro type material, and are removed easily, but do not fall off. Very sturdy stuff. Oddly enough, with these on the back, the phone fits even better in my hand. It actually makes contact with my palm and gives me a much more comfortable grip. They stay on there at all times, except when in the kickstand and deployed.
Now, I needed a desktop replacement. My choice was an app in the market called Complete Linux Installer. I downloaded the Ubuntu large Image and Backtrack. I have placed Backtrack on my 4Gb thumbdrive, and Ubuntu on the 8 Gb thumbdrive. So basically, I am using no memory on my internal or external sd. Here and some pics of the setup.

Now, I have a portable linux desktop wherever I go. It's just something I threw together and wanted to share. Maybe give some folks an idea of what you can do with some of the accessories you can get for this device. Thanks for reading!

great idea.
but i got my netbook for $100 only, for extra $75 i'd rather have my netbook. craigslist is a very good place to look for cheap computers if you are in the US.

That's really using your head. Does the SR do well with performance on Linux? Also, I'd bet all that would fit in an Altoids tin or other such small box.

LOVE IT!!
Really enjoy seeing stuff like this, more so when they use my app P

if only we could use the otg adapter while charging...

You did Complete linux installer? Awesome! Going to be doing the exact same thing with a nexus 7 very soon. Thank for the app! Priceless.

Very interesting might try this

Why haven't you considered a tablet for desktop replacement? with a bluetooth keyboard you can't go wrong and more than enough apps IMO to fulfill ones desktop needs
Im a fan of bigger screens hence my suggestion.

I'm also a fan of bigger screens, so here's another suggestion:
why not connect the phone to a tv/monitor through hdmi and use a bluetooth mouse & keyboard set up?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjVVM4wSN2o&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Look at this guy. Bluetooth mouse and keyboard + hdmi connected all at the same time. Now that's a portable computer. Except he does it on a Note. Can it be done on our phone?

Nice... pretty cool, but I would have gone differently.
I don't know about where you are, but older laptops in the late P4 to Core2/Core2Duo era go for well under $100 on Craigslist or at the state surplus office (which are usually 3-5 yr old HP Business class machines out on rotation, $80 each with A/C charger), add Kubuntu or your favorite flavor of Linux or find an OEM Windows CD and you are good to go and performance wise would be much better than using the SR as a PC.
Still cool... not knocking you, very innovative.

Since I have the fastboot and adb binaries for arm, I really have no need. Gave the SR to my oldest daughter and now use my S4. Glad to see this caught some interest.

Which unit does everyone recommend? I know Sony is the better brand, but I do not need a Bluray player. So which one does everyone have or recommend? The Sony or Logitech?
I got the Logitech Revue. It has the full keyboard + touchpad, which I think is far superior to Sony's jumbled overgrown PS3 controller. Logitech has already released their controller app on the Android Market, which is another plus. It works great!
But the software is virtually identical.
Really, the deciding factor may be which one gets to root first...

Amazon has it with free shipping, but you can also get it direct from Logitech, or from Best Buy. It's $299 wherever you go.
We are making progress on hacking both Sony and Logitech units, but we have the update.zip for the Logitech and not the Sony at this point. It would be great if someone with a brand new Sony can use a network sniffer (like Wireshark) to grab the URL for the Sony update.
See this thread for rooting status or to help out.

Hi
does anybody know if the logitech revue will work in australia with a simple power adapter or will it require something more
and will it work with Austar (pay tv service) or will it need support like dish network?
i refuse to wait the extra 3 months for the aussie release, cause apparently Oz is still a third world country
Thanks

The Revue is HDMI in and out. I think HDMI is standard across the board (unlike composite, etc, which can be PAL, NTSC, etc).

Now I still wonder about the Austar thing, will shows and times show up via search?

So do you think a simple power plug changer will work or you think I'll need new power adapter for oz voltages?

The power supply is in 2 parts. The part which connects to the Revue is capable of 100 to 240 volts, and 50 to 60 Hz input. The part which connects the supply to the wall outlet is pretty standard in the UK and US, but not sure about Oz. It's a figure 8 kinda fitting, used on many older stereos, radios, a lot of laptops, etc. I'm pretty sure you can keep the power supply, and just replace the cable for a few bucks.

Opinion noted, but other backers disagree and back the product to over $3 mil (with over 26k backers). If more thought like you, then the project wouldn't have gone this far in two days. Just a thought.
I get you can do that through a hdmi device. But what if you don't need to? I mean if we can somehow connect all our devices to this, that would be awesome. As for overpriced? Well it may be but to get a project off the ground you need revenue. To me it's worth the price and worth trying out. I mean it'll be as much as a Nexus 7 (8gb) with two controllers. So the price point for me, is not overpriced IMO. But hey that's me.

You obviously did not even read the article are go to the kickstarter page on the project or you would not have asked such a un informed question. What is different, everything about this console from the software to the hardware is open sourced. You can modify the hardware and and software, in fact the developers of the console encourage it. The console promote free play which means all games will have to have at least a free demo. Game developers don't have to buy exspensive SDKs or pay for licensing. This means that the cost of games will be a lot cheaper and that game developers can fully control the development of their games and develop games as they choose which is good for game developers and gamers. As far the $99 price, how can you say that is over priced? Have you looked at how much other gaming consoles are? The cheapest consol is the Wii and it is $200. What about the mobile device you have, you don't think they are way over priced? If you really can not see the significance of this console you should not even be on XDA.

Nexus 10 Pics, Specs, and More

Hi all,
I got my hands on some pictures of the Google Nexus 10 from Samsung. Full details and pictures are below at my blog. Personally, I think it looks very nice. Most excited about the Exynos 5250 and Mali T604. Android 4.2 looks like a very minor upgrade. What do you think?

I've been hesitant to buy any android tablet because it would just be a bigger phone. The screen resolution looks to be a big selling point ( HD++)
As a side note. I would think that for tablets the better camera would be onthe front of the device? Always seen it as strange that they follow the lead from phones.
So they are now using the Nexus 7 button and notification bar layout. It looks okay on a 7" tablet, but I prefer the all in one bottom notification bar on 10" tablets. Hopefully they haven't removed the option for this and a simple tweak is all it takes to get this back.
How long until Apple finds someway to create a lawsuit over this device since its a Samsung?

+1 Personally I'm tired of everything android being Samsung... Their first gen touchwiz was definitely iOS influenced and they are really just another giant corporation maximizing profit margins and trying to get a monopoly on android. I think I'll skip this one.

Same here, but the HP Touchpad fire sale was just too good to pass up. I mostly used it to learn CWM/TWRP and flashing ROMs.
A tablet that would be attractive for me to buy at full price would be something with an x86/64 processor (not an Atom, either something like an i3 or better) that could run desktop operating systems like Windows, which is where most of the real productivity apps are. I'd be able to dual boot Android/Windows since only the ARM platform is locked down in Windows 8. Something with a dockable keyboard/mouse like a laptop. Unfortunately the price point is still too high on these kind of things.

Ohh wait, I can try again - I think it will be over 9000 yen... multiplied by 3. Probably 4. I would consider it up to $499usd since that puts it in the same price category as the Infinity, which is its main Android-class-competition IMO. Sweet screen - versus - micro sd. I think I want the sweet screen on the N10.

You can always get the microSD card out of it and insert it in something like this to get your storage work on classic USB device :
http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-micr...=UTF8&qid=1352033282&sr=8-1&keywords=FCR-MRG2
Seems definitely better than adding a female microUSB to male USB adapter to this device.

Yes, there are multiple microsd to USB adapter in the market, you can find them in stores like walmart, target, or online, Amazon have many of them.
Surely its easier and cheaper to do what I did, just get an otg adapter and a usb card reader.
Cost me about £2.50 in total and works great.

Threats are targeted to different devices with differents users, no really breaking the rules. We are not looking for customer either, we want supporters. DYI is fine, I do it all the time, however some don't like the risk of damaging the device, other don't have access to the right tools or skills, like soldering irons or hot glue guns.
I really don't like the idea of it just sitting there like that. It's just asking to be broken off leaving the USB connector stuck inside the device. Would be nice if Google and/or manufacturers would get over the stupidity and just include the SD on the device...

I have 500 euro What do i buy?

Okey so I was going to buy a Nexus4 phone and 10 nexus tablet this christmas but with the chaos at google play and product out of stock
i decided to go for a Samsung Galaxy S3 and a Ipad .... great combo btw.
I still have 500 euro to spend from January and i have 4 choices.
Consider i have S3 (and Note1 phone) and the Ipad which one would give me most Joy?
1. I could get another tablet...I only have one single reason and that is i have some movies and series on a PC i want to transfer to tablet to watch in another room or outside
Ipad is great love itunes, games and apps....but is not Drag N drop...so all movies i have to buy in itunes or the hassle to convert and transfer via itunes.
I am not either Android, windows or Apple Fan so i just choose the best combo of them all that work best for me every time
If i get another tablet...i could just drag n drop some movies...i would use ipad for everything except for the movies and series i have on my pc (i have a desktop pc so cant move it around)
The only good Tablet i would consider as a second tablet would be Nexus10 if Android or Surface Pro if windows..
Nexus10 has good price and quality.... i think i want to buy it in a physical store...
so we see if nexus10 can get to one.... (keep in mind that i keep my Ipad as i got bunch of accesories to it and use it for daily task...but could use a android or windows just for movies)
Now the Microsoft Surface Pro i can run windows8 with all my pc games.... hopefully i can run Railworks 3 or 4 too or some other road simulators.
i use a tablet when i am in office or breakfasting in the living room where my desktop pc is not.
Surface would do great as it would just be another pc.....but the Nexus10 is a great option too since is much cheaper and can drag n drop movies....
So guys if i choose Option 1 Would i go for Surface or Nexus10 ?
is not that of a must to play Railwork 4 on a tablet but if i could that be a plus
2. Another option is to be content with the IPAD i have and rather spend some more money on Itunes movies and games
and then just buy another phone Nexus4...so one day i can use nexus another S3
but do i need 2 (now 3 phones....) probaly not but it be cool to have the nexus4..... what worry me is the Glas it look easy to break
so i would need to get a very good case for it. (I think case aftermarked for Nexus4 have not take off yet)
3. Or... I could get another phone... i realy like everything Droid...the Black and Red designs are for me very apealing
I could get the HTC butterfly as my second mobile
and then trash my Note 1... then i have HTC butterfly as a phablet, S3 as a phone and Ipad as a ipad
My concern is HTC sound is poor, i had HTC before and soundquality not so good.... after installing many things my phone lagged (but keep in mind it was a windows phone so android is probaly better)
Anyway HTC butterfly could be a good option...now when will it come to europe thats another question ....
4. Finaly i could just drop Nexus4, Nexus10, Htc Butterfly , Microsoft Surface and.... Go for a Iphone...
i never had a iphone only had ipod and now ipad....could save up to 650 euro and get the 16gb iphone from a online store without contract.
But still all other products is also very apealing....
5. There is a fifth option....i could also get a Laptop but for say 500-600 euro i probaly just get some low-cost thing
so probaly wont be better to run some games on... I already have bluetooth keyboards for ipad (work with any tablet) so i might be better of with a tablet
but okey..the option of a laptop is there too
What would you buy of these if you had S3,Note1 and Ipad 4 from:
Nexus4 phone
Nexus 10 tablet
MS surface
Htc Butterfly droid phone
Iphone 5 16gb
?

LOL i forgot about this post
First i already have a Samsung phone so no point in another...for now i will keep my S3 been so busy havent had time to start using it much yet
Is CES over? anything intressing
I checked Google play store here in spain guess what They still sold out for Nexus4 and Nexus10 ROFL this is hillarious
I am also realy waiting for HTC droid but it dont seem it arrive in europe anytime soon.
Now...from gadgets to what i need..
1. I could need a extra tablet or laptop just for movies....as Ipad is great for surfing and apps but i would like it easy to drag and drop movies
so maybe i should get nexus 10 or Microsoft surface (the full windows one)
2. i could get a extra phone but i probaly end up using just one and i am quite happy with my Black Saphire S3 64gb phone.
3. I could save up for a Denon D7000 headphones (i have a pair of D5000 now)
Or i could spend 400-500 euro that this lamp cost ...i like the version sitting on the floor best....but maybe too much for a lamp

The Biggest question in the universe is when will HTC butterfly arrive to europe...if it ever will
I am superfan of red-black gadgets so i be first in line
I also think Nexus4, 10 are cool but i think i pass buying online from google so much chaos...wait for physical store
This headphone i like...but have to save a bit more...they look so nice (but i might be better or pricewise with a Denon D7000 if i go for another headphones)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=no8tWPrmIiI
I also though about Iphone5 and this case (blackop)
http://www.elementcase.com/iPhone-5-s/136.htm
not a applefan but i like to buy either android, windows or apple all from what i like best... so this christmas i got android phone and ipad (in my opinion there is only 2 tablets avaible that worth it and thats ipad and Nexus...atleast until surface comes...and nexus10 i was not able to get yet so got ipad)
I am also waiting for the Surface pro....but not sure for that price might be better go for a laptop i mean....it probaly just a experiment from microsoft anyway.
but with HDMI ports (i think it have) and drag and drop movies surface might do great together with my ipad.
Oh...and if i go another android phone it probaly be Nexus or HTC butterfly as that what look coolest at the moment
