I have a Capitvate running Stock Gingerbread 2.3.5. I am on a volunteer fire department and to go along with our pagers, we have a thing called "2nd Signal." What it basically does is sends a sms message to your phone when the pager goes off. On my 4s, I could assign a sms tone that is distinct to the 2nd Signal. The issue is that the sms message comes from an email address ([email protected]). The problem on the Captivate, is the programs I have tried only allow a custom sms message tone from a number. Any ideas of a program to use that will allow a custom sms tone from an email address? I have tried Ringo Lite and SMS Popup to no avail.
I love it when I stump people!
I see only one solution - you may install GoSMS Pro. It could hide messages from some contacts to private mailbox, which have separate notification settings.

I'm writing this on behalf of a friend, so I don't have a Nexus S 4G to play with, but I have an Evo and am familiar with the vanilla android experience.
I have a separate GV number from my Sprint number and can get text messages for either. I also use GV as my voicemail provider.
My friend just got a Nexus S 4G, which has the Sprint/GV integration out of the box, instead of having the option (which I turned down, as I like them separate). He was getting a stock SMS app notification AND a GV notification for every SMS received. There's an option to disable the SMS notification in GV, but it must do something else, as checking/unchecking didn't do what I expected.
It wasn't until I uninstalled GV for him, and separated the Sprint/GV integration (getting him a new GV number) that the extra notifications stopped.
Now my sister has just gotten a Nexus S 4G, and she isn't very tech savvy and is on the other side of the country, so I'm to wondering if there's an easier way to accomplish getting rid of the extra notification.
I've read online about disabling Inbox synchronization to "fix" this, but I don't know if that will cease the voicemail notifications she's getting as well. Can anyone gimme an answer for that? Thanks!
Go to the SMS app and turn notifications off for that?

I'm assuming you're using the native (stock) email client app for your phones email delivery, right? Try downloading a different email application and set the notification for that address to your specific notification tone. I know you can set "rules" in such email apps like MailDroid (I use the pro version, love it) so that might be a possibility...

I receive SMS alerts from an email server for work. I would like to differentiate those from my other SMS messages but I cannot get the custom notifications to work when the sender is an email address. I did test and it works as expected when the sender is a mobile number.
I found another person having the same issue and they were able to enter the email address in the mobile number field to get custom notifications to work properly but that does not work for me. The other post was over a year ago so things may have changed.
Anyone have any ideas?
Hey XDA,
I get paged out for my job via a text message sent to my cell phone (a GS3). My company sends it as an email from [email protected] to [email protected] or whatever the thing is. Anyway, because I'm receiving these messages as a sms from an email I cant set a custom notification sound for them, which I would really like to do. I've tried different roms and pretty much every sms app on the market. nothing I tried has worked, they always come in w/ just the stock ringtone, even though I've saved the email as it's own contact an set custom notifications thru the contacts app.
I keep getting notifications of Can't get MMS so I turn on Data and click the message on the notification screen. Nothing happens. I have received MMS recently so I think this is just one of those new advertisers sending me a MMS with no phone number. I'm using Textra as a messaging app and I have notification dots turned on. So the Textra Icon is showing a Dot but when I go into the app none of the entries in the history list has a dot. I don't know who is trying to send me MMS. This has to be fixed because it's like screening your phone calls. If you don't recognize the number I don't want to download the MMS. There seems to be no cancel option. This must be added. It can't be blocked because you don't know the number. Wouldn't it be great if you where able to block MMS or SMS with blank recipient phone number. Wouldn't it be great if robo callers where not allowed to set their phone number as blank. Wouldn't it be great if Robo callers were required to set a code that a phone app could read and bypass the call.
