Amazon has this ridiculously cheap deal on a Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 for $200.
I looked all over and I couldn't find if the aforementioned S3 has the ability to be carrier unlocked. I know the bootloader isn't unlocked (except for the dev edition of Verizon) which this doesn't seem to be it. I have Tmobile, and I don't want to pick this up unless I'm sure I can carrier unlock it to Tmobile.
Thanks guys.
I think it's possible, there's some stuff in the development section about it but I don't think data works yet.

So reading the Beat Buy FAQ, they make it sound as if there are two different versions. A SIM locked one for $199 with two year contract from T-Mo and an unlocked one for $529. I believe this is misrepresentation but wanted to hear your thoughts.

personally id get the T-Mobile version for $199.99 bc im pretty sure a unlock code method will come up somehow and if it doesnt, then u can just ask T-Mobile for the code and get it in a week or so.
Hi,
I dont know for sure -- but my guess is all the Nexus S phones are unlocked.
According to this thread, the Nexus One was unlocked with a contract:
talkandroid.com/android-forums/nexus-one/3426-subsidized-nexus-one-carrier-locked.html
I wouldn't take the Best Buy FAQ as gospel. For example one of the question is:
Are there two different versions of the Nexus S, locked and unlocked?
No, there is only one Nexus S. It is available locked with a 2-year T-Mobile contract or unlocked with no contract.

The answer is no, but then they go and say there is locked and an unlocked version. Did a 10 year old write this or what?
there are no locked nexus s devices just like there were no locked nexus one devices. Some are just sold with a contract.
I see in some videos that theres a T-Mobile tab in the Market giving T-Mobile recommended apps.
So is there 2 version? Will the Sim Free version have no T-mobile branding in it?
I currently own a Samsung Galaxy S1 from Bell and I consider buying a refurbished Nexus S from Kooko as per the offering in the link below.
http://mobilesyrup.com/2012/01/19/refurbished-nexus-s-hitting-koodo-mobile-tomorrow-for-200/
Now, I searched the forum but I'm still not convinced all Nexus S phones are carrier unlocked and since I want to use it with my Bell SIM card, it has to be... or else I need to know how to unlock it.
So, can anyone confirm that canadian Nexus S are carrier unlock ?
Thanks in advanced
All GSM Nexus S phones are unlocked. It is likely that you just need to change the APN settings from Koodo to Bell.
That's what I wanted to hear!
Ok so here it is in a nutshell. I spend half of the year in New Zealand and Half in the US, in new Zealand I am on a GSM network and have had good success unlocking IOS devices (AT&T) and buying a prepaid SIM card and using them there. I want to pick up a Samsung either a S2 or S3 and use it over there as I am just sooooooooo sick of IOS. with all of that being said. I have a few questions and I did a bit of looking but not sure.
I have a HTC Thunderbolt for Verizon (yes I realize it CDMA and wont work on GSM) and have rooted it and flashed a custom ROM on it so I am not unfamilliar with the process.
so first question
1. Do you have to Carrier Unlock Android OS phones like you do IOS devices Or do you just root and flash a new ROM to it?
2. Do all of the US based GSM carriers have SIM card slots? (I know the IOS devices on AT&T did.
3. If AT&T phones work over there will sprint and singular will work as well?
4. Since I will not be using 4G over there am I better off with the Galaxy S2, I was also looking at the Nexus as well any thoughts?
Guys I realize that there are probable 20 threads with the same questions or a variation and I have done some looking but with everything happening in my life at the moment I don't have a lot of time to make decisions about phones.
thanks.
I'm going to answer this as best as I can. A CDMA phone overseas isn't usually a hot idea. A gem phone will typically have a sim card in fact I haven't seen one that didn't... and still fell into the gsm umbrella. Get an unlocked device as the only way a CDMA phone overseas will benefit you is if you find a CDMA phone company in aus and flash it. But again gsm will be the easiest way to go. Its a T-Mobile phone call and say you want a sim subsidy unlock (current active and not past due tmobile customers only) can take up to 14 days for the code.all the phones you will get in USA will need a carrier unlock unless a software one is available. And I'd go with the galaxy s2 just because it has some beastly ROMs and great longevity

ok just to be clear I won't be using CDMA overseas jsut GSM. does the Galaxy S2 have software unlocks?

Also most CDMA phones don't also come with a simcard slot. Gsm is your best bet so get your galaxy s2 with T-Mobile or att

It's been a while since I've been on xda (look at my username), but I have a new problem. I have a brand new Spring s5 (SM-G900P) that is locked. Is there any way to unlock this for use on T-Mobile? I have seen a few posts on this but no solutions.
I realize that if I were to unlock this phone, that it would probably not have LTE or even 4g capabilities. This is fine. I am also fine with paying a little money to unlock it, but only if it doesn't seem sketchy. I am not a Sprint customer, so I can't just call them to unlock it for me. However if anyone knows of a good strategy to get Sprint to unlock it (pay an employee $15 or something), please let me know.
Is this possible to do? Please save me from iPhone land and get me back to Android. I love the s5, but I have just been using it as a mini tablet since it does not get signal.

Hey all, I got one of these brand new in the box from one of those machines that you have to try and get the stick through the hole and it knocks down the prize. The thing is, this one was branded by Sprint (did NOT say Sprint anywhere on the box, only within the phone itself on startup.)
I tried to bring it to MetroPCS, and they said they can't flash it because it was too new or something.
Is there actually a way to flash/unlock it from Sprint to use on Metro?
No, there is not. You have Metro PC which is GSM and you have Sprint which is CDMA. You can contact Sprint to unlock for international use. But it cannot be unlocked for domestic, be it CDMA or GSM.
Call Sprint international customer support.
BTW: This is Dev Section of the forum.. You may want to post in the Q and A section of the forum for questions like these. Its easier to get a helping hand.
Actually i thought the note edge was capable of both. It suppose to run on cdma or gsm like the nexus

Actually, there is a possibility that if there is no lein on the phone itself, you may be able to contact Sprint and get them to unlock it.
