i ask what i thought was a simple question----
Default brickbug question
i just got my tap 7 plus a couple of weeks ago and have been reading through the forums about this bub. all i have done is root the tap and do not plan on putting ics on it till it is released in the states as an ota update.
if i get the ota update am i safe from this bug or is it a case of the tab not liking ics.
i bought me tab off ebay and it is refurbished unit. i tried to register it with samesung and they said that i couldnt since it was refurbished so i dont want to screw it up.
so bottom line---is the bug only triggered by flashing the ics update from austria or is it any ics update including the official ics from samsung for the usa
and i get 2 useless answers one with links to a couple of threads and then the mod closes the thread and i still dont have an answer.
ive read for days the threads about the bug, and im still looking for an answer. the threads have all kinds of technical stuff and comments about flashed roms and cwm and useing the leaked ics and flashing the ics austria rom, and its all interesting but doesnt answer my question.
simply asked. does the bricking come about from flashing roms and using roms released for other countries, making the official ics samsung release ota safe or is it a problem with the hardware not working with the ics software. ive rooted my tab 7 plus to run apps that require root. i am waiting for the ota ics although the tab works just fine on hc.
thats all i want to know.
If you have the buggy chip, there is a chance to brick it just by flashing.
If you have ICS, wiping from recovery can cause this because of some partitions being removed. Although it can happen anytime and by anytime I mean you can't tell which wipe will kill your tab.

no it comes from the wiping that you do before you flash something.
Don't Do *anything* to your tab. Hopefully it will be fine.

so even the official ota from samsung could cause the brick. i dont plan on flashing any roms only accepting the ota when its availlible in the us.
The Brick Bug comes from wiping the Tab using the original (samsung)recovery. It's a 50/50 thing. I did it once and thankfully it worked, but others do get caught up with this bug.
The best way to deal with it is either to just leave your Tab stock or in case you've Rooted it, then go and flash CWM also.

i understand that at times, when things get buggy it is necassary to do a factory reset (wipe) but if you never have to wipe then are you safe.
also what does cwm do. im not new to android but am new to the tab. where can i find the cwm for the tab 7 plus p6210

Hi, I really need some help cause i am new in this (i owned htc desire g7 bravo),
I have bought htc one x at&t mobile. Hopefully by the next week it would be here. I was thinking to root it so I can delete all at&t crap apps. After some search I found out that at&t models always get the updates with a big delay time. So I want to find a stock rom (clean from branded carrier apps). I forgot to mention I live in Greece.
Most important for me is:
1)Greek language and keyboard
2)upgrades “on air”
3)stable and fast (stock sounds perfect)
4)of course choosing north American type means I wand better battery life so it’s going without saying that battery life is important
Any suggestions? I look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237 but no luck. Saying at&t on stock roms means there are at&t apps right?? Thanks a lot in advance!

A rooted stock rom is probably your best bet. Custom roms usually remove the OTA function for obvious reasons. Once rooted, the bloatware is easy to remove.
I think you have to load the Greek keyboard separately but I don't know. I think there is one rom with all the languages turned on but it's not stock.

The stock rooted roms should work on any One XL--they are usually debranded. But they are not all exactly the same--I would review the OP to be sure.
Only downside of stock rooted... You take the att ota, you break root access!!

Yes. Don't take the OTA.
Be patient and wait a few days for the devs to update their roms.
It's simply the downside of being rooted and rommed.

Yes.
On any Android device if you are rooted, don't update by OTA.
Its really that simple. How many times does this need to be said?
At a minimum, you will lose root. At the worst, you will not be able to root again (depending on what was changed in the OTA) or get stuck in a bootloop (or otherwise not be able to boot).

Definitely understandable bro. I recommend everyone to enjoy that honeymoon period of a new phone first, then customize the hell out of it. Nothing wrong with your doing, but like others have said don't take an update OTA if your stock. Just pop back in when you ready to really see what this phone is capable of

Even if you are on the stock ROM and rooted, you should not ever ever ever install an OTA, for the reasons I've stated in post 8 above.
If you want to install a new firmware version, they almost always get posted in Development in pre-rooted, but otherwise stock form, very soon after the OTA starts rolling out (sometimes even before the OTA, in case of a leak). Those are safe to install.
Thanks for the the explanations, guys.

Sure, there are exceptions. Apps like OTA Rootkeeper sometimes work too (but don't think it ever has on the One X) to keep root after an OTA.
I was giving the "short story" rule for n00bs to go by. The "long story" is not to accept an OTA unless you have researched in advance that it will work (such as from other users here); or you intend to be the guinea pig and live the with the consequences, whatever they may be.
Too many folks here jumped on the 2.20 OTA when it first rolled out, then came on here crying "Ohhh sh1t I lost root, and its not rootable".
"Don't ever OTA on a rooted device" is a good rule to live by, unless you reearch on here and learn otherwise. On the huge majority of devices, the OTA will not even install on a rooted device, anyway. And rooted versions of the latest firmwares always get posted here. So there is really no reason to gamble and take the OTA.

I don't quite understand, I mean the 2.20 firmware is rootable now, is this still unrootable even there's a way to root it?
And also I'm expecting the stock jelly bean rom which is said to be rolling out this month, and I don't care losing root for couple of weeks, do I have to do anything before I install the OTA? Or should I just install the RUU instead?

What happened was that people who took the OTA lost root, and it was months before someone found an exploit. That may happen again with JB if you take it.
It might take the devs a few days to a week to update their roms. Just be patient.
If you absolutely can't wait, you should be stock before taking an OTA.

Neither. As I already said, it will show up in a pre-rooted, TWRP flashable, but otherwise stock ROM in the Development subforum. It usually takes about a day before a dev gets ahold of the OTA file, and posts a pre-rooted version of it. Just flash that. And the way the OTAs roll out, you'll probably see the pre-rooted version on XDA before you even get the OTA notification.
You should just erase from your brain the concept of accepting the OTA.

There's nothing for JB because it hasn't been released yet. There are rooted versions of many of the other firmware versions in the development section; just look in the compilation thread at the top, which has them all listed.
So,i was lucky i started it before i get the phone on hands! I really thought that at&t takes a lot of time to give ota but it is not so long time!(max a month i think) I think JB hasn't pop up not even for htc(no-carrier branded)phones, always talking about s4 version or 4g as it is called. All stock rooted roms i check seemed good but most of times it was still branded. So to sum up i think i will stay with the stock rom till jb pops up,then i will root the phone deleting all at&t apps...!(only way i know to delete rom's apps is with at least root acces right is there any other?)
I think it is needed to be said againe that even if you have stock rom and ota pops up you dont't do the update but you get the update from xda cause stock root rom+ota can cause problems!
Silly question (i think) unrooting and then ota is as dengarous as stock root rom and ota????(it sounds ok and you avoid re-installing your apps)
All i need (FOR NOW OF COURSE) is a clear rom and get the original "hTC_bootup_one" and "hTC_downanimation" zip files to the right place to avoid at&t meeting every time i go to menu and every time i power my up phone!
Hi everyone,
My verizon galaxy s3 right now has a baseband of I535VRLHE.
First I was wondering which baseband is most recent, I have heard of MB1, MF1, etc. I know where to get these software updates but I have not found out how to actually update the baseband. Right now, I am jumping between many roms but as of this moment I am on an unofficial cm 10.1 build. They suggest getting on MF1 modem, but I really have no idea how do it.
Thanks for the help,
PS: I looked for quite a while so please don't tell me to keep looking or something like that.

And these will make my radios stronger, and thus my signal stronger?\

What modem do you guys suggest flashing to. Right now I am on I535VRLHE and by my understanding that is extremely outdated. So just to make sure again no wiping anything, no formatting, no anything? And I should be flashing an update in either twrp or cwm? I know these questions sound stupid when I said I flash roms daily, but I really do not want to risk bricking my beloved s3 hahaha.
Thanks for taking your time to help me.
from what i understand the modem that works best for you will depend mostly on location. they might get better as they update, but i get teh same signal on the latest as I did on a modem from a few updates ago.
you can download the all in one packages here
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/34053-firmware-vrbmf1-modemrpmtzsbl-verizon-sgs3-sch-i535/
reboot into recovery, then flash, reboot back to the ROM. if youre worried, make a backup. things can always go wrong i guess.
Ok thank you again, another question haha sorry. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1788313&page=6 In this thread, the first few pages say to flash via odin and what not none of them confirm being able to flash through recovery. Have you ever flashed a radio through recovery?
Also what advantages does an AIO have compared to just the modem.

i couldn't get Odin 3.07 or 3.09 to work along with kies so what i did was, I went into a verizon retailer and told them that i took the OTA update to 4.3 and while it was installing my phone for some reason rebooted and when it rebooted it came to the "firmware upgrade encountered issue. please use software repair assistant & try again". they had never seen that message before and bought the story. so as result my phone is still indeed bricked but they took it as a factory defect and I am currently awaiting a new one in the mail. Iwould recomend doing that and not haveing a S3 for 2-5 days or wait for an exploit to come out for versin 4.3. Hopefully this helps.

Personally I think they really didn't care if it was insurance fraud or not, they don't want to lose a customer, remember they have you on contract... If the phone said the warranty was still valid which comes up on the screen that informs that there was a problem installing firmware, then there has been no fraud committed. No reason to bash on other members and call them names.

Dont know why updating then downgrading, when 4.3 is running awesome and it has more features than any 4.1 rom for the gs3. I unrooted and installed 4.3, and it was the best choice I made cause now battery life is excellent, and I get almost all the features that the s4 has. Ive been rooting android phones since I had a android. When tw 4.3 gets rooted im sure they will come with a unroot version that will unbrick you. You should have done more reading and research out of all the post explaining not to attempt to root or downgrade. You should have only upgraded if you didnt care about being stuck on 4.3

Hi,
I just got my 4.3 update on the VZW SCH-I535 phone! Then I decided to try CM10.2 and didn't realize that my phone was re-locked because of the OTA update! Now my phone is stuck with the message "System software not authorized ..." To move past this issue, I have tried (and failed) the following:
- Tried to flash stock rom using ODIN (withSamsung-Updates.com-SCH-I535_VZW_1_20120705143513_fti2qg2lmf-stock-rom-4.0.3). It goes all the way through and I get a PASS! But after the phone reboots I get the "System error ... " again
- Tried to flash stock rom using ODIN with stock.vzw_root66.tar file and got the same result as above.
- I have also tried installing with Nand Erase All and Re-Partition checked, with PDA selected using the first rom, but I still get the same error
- I have read and tried some of the thread on this site with no luck either.
Any clue how I can get past this issue? Thanks for all your help in advance.

If this dosnt work for you try flashing the pit file with the tar. It is one of the last replys in this thread. Worked! Thank you! I hope this post helps others in this situation as well. With 4.3 installed, does that mean I can't unlock the SIM at this point? I am trying to get ATT to work on this phone.
thanks once again!

Happy to help! I think the sim comes unlocked since a few ota's ago. you need to put in a code or something along that nature.

Turns out, after working with the ATT folks for a while, that the IMEI number that my phone has comes up incorrectly in their database. It shows up as a Samsung Tab. Checked with Samsung and my IMEI number is correct, so ATT will have to fix it on their end to get my phone to work correctly. I don't know why they make it so hard to migrate phones across service providers.
I've got my phone bugging to update but I haven't done it yet because I don't want to lose root. if I understand this right I can update and then re root with that download? or is there another method?

The only working root method is currently saferoot if you take the OTA. Personally I wouldn't take it. I'd suggest keeping your unlocked bootloader in tact and running a custom 4.3 rom.

You van root 4.3 after ota or that link, but if I was you I would try to use the ota first. If it works you will keep all installed apps and settings (but it might be buggy). If you follow that link you will loose current setup, apps and it will format internal sd (but it will be clean and hopefully bug free ). Make sure you are home with access to a pc before you try ota. If you changed to much of the workings of your phone the ota may not work or could even brick you. In that case you will need to use that link.

Honestly I'm glad I took the ota on accident. The past few weeks my phone has worked without a hitch. Some people just do not need custom ROMs and I think I am one of them. I'm pretty sure everyone who complains about how 4.3 is buggy and a battery hog just needs to use Odin to get a clean fresh start. I am disappointed that I can't install cyanogen when I turn this into my mp3 player after I get a new phone but its not like tw is bad. It just has a few annoying things that I can change with root access.
Off topic
I dnt hate tw ..I think is a good Rom in general .all that bloatware what got me to root and then lead to custom roms .like mention not everyone needs cuztom things.I do agree that a clean install of TW runs great .but I like options .and to each there own

That's good. I've seen the OTA in action as my girl has it on her phone and she's complained about it every day since she took it. I've running wicked sensations 4.3 and it runs like a champ.

OK I just installed safestrap and I kid you not the theme of wicked sensation made me swap back to my stock slot immediately. I'll use it all day tomorrow and tell you what differences I notice. Right off the bat it just looks like a ROM made from a recovery backup and customized with xposed. I can't wait for beans to make a 4.3 rom.

Seriously? They put a ton of work into theme on this rom. I've seen 4.3 stock and I'm not impressed. It's boring and pretty basic. Wicked is an awesome rom. I've run just about all of them. Beans rom isn't bad at all but I seemed to have a ton of issues with it

I like it, but it certainly doesn't have quite the same cleanliness as a good AOSP theme. It's all personal preference.
At least we know safestrap is working consistently.

Just curious to know if there are any vzw S3 owners that are still unrooted AND on 4.1.2? I am. I assume there aren't many of us left. My reason for still being on 4.1.2, I keep deferring the ota but I become too lazy to invest into rooting but still keeping my hopes that one day I will have the will power to do so!

I'm rooted and on 4.1.2 deodex stock. The kernel is unlocked still. I got rid of the constant update warning by deleting the one recommended file. This phone is so old I don't remember all the steps to get here anymore. I'm sure the threads that I followed are still here buried so deep cause they're so old and ancient. Sorry, can't help you find them.
I'm super happy with it and with my unlimited data and a fully working TiBU Pro and tethering, I have no reason to update. Until I'm ready for the next greatest phablet sometime after next month.

Wow man, I kept my backup for 4.1.2 but never looked back on rooting and unlocking, which you still have the option to do. I would not take any OTAs as the BootLoader will be locked permanently and word is verizon has been finding ways to block root
Here's the thread for those of you still on 4.1.2 and looking to unlock and root, this tool is pretty simple but you need a pc

People running 4.1.2 should do the following if they want to run deodexed 4.3 stock (locked bootloader stripped out) or 4.4.4 AOSP roms like CM/PA/AOKP/etc.
1. Towelroot to root
2. EZ-Unlock to unlock bootloader with LE6 bootloader
3. Install TWRP recovery through TWRP Manager
4. Flash invisiblek's MF1 firmware
5. Flash the NE1 radio (I don't think a zip of it by itself exists)
6. Flash your rom of choice

Agree somewhat with that. Casual works just fine for those on 4.1.2 also. I used it when I unlocked and rooted and never looked back, it's also in the previous post before yours

Alternatively you could just look up one click methods in google. You should just be able to click a button and walk away. I remember it even putting on a recovery as well...

anyone using Evdo? can you share your configuration ?
Still rockin' Cleanrom 7! No joke..
My wife's been using the GS3 I gave her and I had it flashed to the stablest rom at the time.
It's getting some age on it for sure and acting wonky so I'm trying to figure out what I should do with it.. In the hunt for what to do to keep it a solid worker for the Mrs. Heck, last time I flashed anything it was that rom on this old GS3 to get her going. Yes, I went to the dark-side, so haven't been a flashoholic like my previous android days. So now I gotta learn up so I can fix this thing. Been a while.. huh
A testament though for Scott's kicking Cleanrom for this phone. What a beast to hang on so long and fairly decently on this phone.
What to do?
Considering trying to odin to a stock rom or something to do an OTA, which I know will lock it's b-loader, or some other option for a pretty solid TW updated rom of some kind.
Reading up now in here to find out.

Yup it sure can. As long as it's on 4.1.2 or earlier the bootloader can be unlocked. As far as rooting it can be rooted even up to 4.4.2

haven't gotten around to rooting, don't want to deal with many of the hassles that came with the OTA. I defer the OTA every day.
got til June before I hit my next upgrade....will see if I can last that long.

That has to be annoying deferring the update on a daily basis. I didn't waste anytime myself with unlocking and rooting when I got my phone. I knew better than to trust VZW
