I9003 slowing down (long story, sorry) - Samsung Galaxy SL i9003

Hello all, and thanks for the help you give to android community.
I am quite sure that this problem it has been discussed quite a bit, but since the effect can be provoked by a variety of issues (and I tried to solve most of them) I am asking you help, providing all the information you guys may need to solve the issue.
I have some issues with my i9003. Once i bought it, after installing only a few applications (let's say 10 or 12, and only one or 2 big as a few hundreds mb) it started lagging a lot, especially while writing, but even in navigating through menus, even if that is less annoying. (At this point, I was using gb 2.3.6 value pack).
So I rooted it and removed some bloatware and used autostarts to get rid of google maps, heavy and always active.
I still had a lot of lag while writing, and I thought that could have been caused by some samsung sutff, so I just flashed cm9 by Dhiru, which is very pretty and efficient, but the problem reappeared after installing the usual number of apps.
Then I reflashed 2.3.4, rooted again, reflashed cm9 and installed app2sd and then reinstalled my apps.
Didn't work either.
I am using a 8gb external sd, partitioned with CWM in ext3, even if after partitioning process the phone detects only about 4gb. To make it detect 8gb I have to format it with partition wizard and let the phone recreate the file system (if some1 explain me this as well I'll be very grateful).
I am using ondemand governor, surface dithering, zram at 18%, resource cleaning active, and I am not using task killers. I am not using no frilles either, since performance menu in cm9 seems to have almost the same options (besides smartass v2 governor).
It is indeed extremely annoying, especially since the phone without that many apps (and they are not that many again), works like a charm.
I dunno what else to.
If you need any other information, do not hesitate to ask here or by pm.
Thanks all for reading this wall of text...

Try flashing ddlf2.. its very fast and smooth.
Btw Why do you have to keep so much apps? You use every app everyday?

10/12 apps is nothing, i have 54 on my phone and still growing, no lag.
Please post a complete list of all apps you installed, some apps/widgets will run in the background and eat RAM/CPU resources.

I have over 80 but no lag at all. Was on DDLF2 but reverted back to DDKP3.

It's probably one of these apps that's causing the issue, try removing them all, installing them one by one and then try to see which one (or ones) that are causing the lag.

Buddy we have pretty much enough internal phone memory for apps installation. Always prefer to install apps in internal phone memory which is always fastest way of accessing apps on android OS. Dont do any partition on sd card. Keep external memory card as external memory only.
Use DDLF2 rom with xda_bam cf root v14fix version. use following configuration.
smartassv2
sio
max- 1ghz
min- 300 mhz
Also after every regular interval of 2-3 days clean dalvik cache from recovery mode.

Ok, considering battery is at 37% I will just go with you through the process, to be sure.
-I wipe data/cache/dbdata, anything with cwm.
-I flash with Odin I9003DDLF2 (2.3.6) from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1004647
Should I flash it twice? I guess samsung solved that problem...
-I flash with Odin PDA_BCK_CF-root_universal_beta14fix.tar from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1355675 to obtain root, cmw and better kernel.
Is it already ext4?
-I set the proper governor and I/O scheduler and I do basically nothing else besides installing the stuff I need and removing all the horrible samsung bloat with titanium bkup.
-I format through partition wizard my external sd and nothing else
Right?:fingers-crossed:

ya correct.

Perfect, thanks a lot for your help.
P.s. so, no need to ext4 after that kernel, right?

I have over 120 apps(trying to cut down) and I experience occasional lag on the keyboard but sometimes it goes away on its own. Maybe restarting your phone can solve keyboard lag the next time you experience it. Yes, you need to ext4 after the kernel. (if you want, that is)

Thanks all for the answers and precise explanations.
Yesterday while charging the battery I moved all apps to int memory and today I experienced less lag, even if it is still there.
I think it got worse as day goes on, so if tomorrow is again unbearable I will install rom and kernel suggested by Vishal... Well, I could do that anyway to just test one more rom

News: I have not yet installed DDLF2, since after moving apps to int memory it restarted working decently, but now the issue is there again, but at least I have one more element for you:
If I deactivate/remove external sd, which is totally empty, the lag almost disappear. Again, external sd is totally empty (8gb).
Any1 else ever experienced this issue?
EDIT:
more informations.
When I try formatting delvik cache from CWM 6.0.1.0 it states "e:unknown volume for path [/sd-ext]. When I go to install zip from sd card and I try choose zip from internal sd card, it checks /emmc/ directory, and if I am not mistaken, that's the external sd card, and there actually shows all the files that are (or should be) on internal sd.
I guess that I could have done something to invert sd and extsd, but if I did, it was some time ago, and since then I made multiple wipes and reinstalls, even to stock rom.

Phone lags after installing 2.2

After installing froyo, i noticed the phone lags alot more then when it was stock. I have overclocked it to 1ghz. Anyone else having this problem or have a fix for this?
mine actually got a lot smoother after upgrading.. im on 1.2
did you do a data wipe? also clear the dalvik cache via open recovery if you havent dont it
same here. for those who said its smoother, can u please check how long does it take to start a new app, as in how long does it take for the app to pop up from the moment u click the app in the app drawer/desktop to the time the app pops up? on 1.1 its almost instantaneous but on 1.2 it takes about 4 to 5 secs for the app to open.
it will depend if your apps are installed in the internal storage or on the external SD
Try formatting your SD card.

Less then a second to open in my case. I really don't have any problems with the new update. I'm using a class 4. 8gb memory card that was partitioned with gparte. And dalvik cache is still in phone memory.

I had this problem with 1.1b but I only wiped data, i didn't wipe cache or dalvik. When I installed 1.3 I wipe just cache and dalvik and the 4-5 sec delay is gone.
remember that if ypu install a new update for the custom rom you will always need to nuke the dalvik cache.
its due to the rom not being able to repopulate the cache properly. causing slow down in the system
Lag on wanted and dexters
Using Dexter's 1.3 ROM: Very noticable lag even after a full system/dalvik wipe. opening internal memory apps took at least 4 seconds and even with 800MHz overclock homescreens were jerky.
Using Wanted/Dexter's 1.2 ROM: The lag is less, about halfway between the original 2.1 French sbf I had before and dexter's 1.3. Only problem I find now is that some apps (etc. endomondo and tweetdeck) will force close on opening (only did a dalvik wipe for this one). Tweetdeck still gives update notifications curiously.
Also depends on the app. When a app is heavier, it takes longer to load with the specs we have on the XT720. For example, the browser and Trillian start immediatly (and I am on latest version from Dexter btw), but Angry Birds takes about 6 seconds to load. Simply 'cause it's a heavy app. Same for Pig Rush.
overall 2.2 froyo on XT720 runs way faster and smoother than the original 2.1 that it was shipped with.
at least that's my experience

yep, its definitely faster then the 2.1 that its shipped with.
but it may not be faster then the 2.1 with JIT add-on...and that had more ram available as well i think
noo... i had the 2.1 + JIT add on and it was no where near as fast as the 2.2 from Dexter.
running at stock 720 Mhz feels like it is running at 1000 Mhz
back with the 2.1 + JIT i still had to clock the phone to 1000 to feel what it feels now on 720 Mhz
as for space of RAM, use Link2SD, if most of the Apps that you are using are not Apps2SD compatible

Oh ok, i still have dexters 1.2..not on 1.3 yet which is supposed to be faster.
Will using Links2SD free up RAM? isn't it only the internal phone storage which is affected?
I think I have dexters apps2ext because when I flashed the rom i had a ext2 partition on the memory card so it does it automatically. Does that make sense...i'm new to this stuff so correct me if I'm wrong please.
And does that mean my launcher pro home screen and everything else is on my sd card so it will add some lag- even if its a class 6.
Greetings to all! I few days ago I registered and I am with my XT720 and I hope to learn much, and what we can over time help. Now I'm thinking about changing ROM with Dexters, and I read that many people is more fluid with applications, is a great job by him.
When I go to experience them comment how I worked. by the time I have a question, I hope you can help me .... memory space for application installation is smaller? further applications from the SD? all applications remain after install?

no, the nandroid ROM restore will delete all the stuff that is in your phone, so make sure to backup everything before you proceed.
no changes to the storage, you can use Froyo's Apps 2 SD or the Link2SD app in the App section to do the move to SD card
There is a video tutorial on how to do it in the DEV section
Even after clearing data and wiping cache, i still notice it takes about 3 seconds to load apps (and phonebook/contacts) It may depend on the app as there are variance in its capacities.

Take a screen capture with your phone storage. and startup manager or apps running.
when you flash rom did you deleted all files excepted sdcard or just factory format?
if you can give me more information about your sdcard formation, kernel, launcher...

[Q] Ok, help me people!! (Again)

Ok, this is not a rant thread, just so you know. Nor is it a basic thread asking about the mistakes I made. Kind of.
Some of you would know I kingo rooted my Xperia E last week. Bricked my xperia e last week. Fixed my xperia e last week.
Downloaded Rom Toolbox lite on my xperia e yesterday. Bricked my phone yesterday. Fixed my phone yesterday.
To be safe, I need you to tell me the safest root apps that will help my phone:
Speed up general performance
Increase RAM from 409MB
Make games work much faster like Temple Run 2, Subway Surfers, and even JETPACK JOYRIDE!!!!
Keeps me on top of my app installations and CPU/GPU Control
I also want a fancy boot animation, which is what bricked my phone in the first place I believe (Yesterday, using rom toolbox).
And I want these by:
Give me a CPU Control that is safe and can give my phone max performance.
Give me either an app that creates RAM Swapfiles or a technique you can do when connecting your mobile/sdcard to the pc to get more RAM.
Give me apps that may find blocks of data when needed (like lagfix) and fix entropy levels, as well as smart root ram boosting to make game performance hugely improve.
I want an app like a Root Browser that keeps me on top of my system, my CPU and GPU manually at all times.
Thanks, Guys.
To speed up general performance, the best thing is Greenify. Just hibernate Google Play Services, Facebook, and any other app you don't want running in the background.
I don't think there is a way to increase RAM, but you can probably use Swapper for Root to add swap. Of course, your kernel needs to support swap (I think hsr0's CM10 does).
Seeder, Hyper Cola Mod, 16-128 MB of swap, and Greenify speed up gaming a lot. But how come you can't play Jetpack Joyride? I can play NFS: Most Wanted and CSR Racing easily.
No idea for GPU control, but CM10 gives CPU control in Settings > Performance.
When downloading a boot animation, make sure it's for MDPI. Other than that you should be fine.
Greenify frees RAM, Swapper for Root adds swap. Seeder generates entropy, CM10 gives CPU control.
What do you mean by "on top of my app installations"?

Thanks, I have a few questions and an answer to yours. So:
Are you saying Greenify frees ram of servicing apps in the background? Because I have already got an app that freezes apps. Is that fine?
Hyper Cola Mod? What that Do? Seeder, does it work?
I tried Swapper for Root, my clean master said the same amount of RAM and I didn't see much to any difference. Could you give me the Computer method, creating your own swapfile?
MDPI? Help me.
And give me a completely simple way of flashing CM10/10.2 on m xperia e. I have it rooted, android 4.0.4, kernel .68, with No frills CPU Control (only helping a little) and Rom Toolbow. Give me a link to hsr0's cm10 and how to put it on my phone because I don't think mine works with swap.
NEED TO KNOW HOW TO PUT APPS ONTO SD CARD, HEAVY ONES!!!
EDIT TO MY GAMING COMMENT: I can play Jetpack Joyride, with tiny lagg at tiny times for a tiny amount of time, but I need help on Temple Run 2 especially. Subway Surfers still has minor lagg but it has 90% improved from what it was before I rooted. I also need the tutorial for volt.fstab thing allowing me to have sd card for my internal memory. And one more question:
If I do the volt.fstab technique, making my sdcard into internal memory allowing me to download NFS Most Wanted, can I still use my SDCARD for ram? Because if I'm right, with the volt.fstab technique you make your sdcard into internal memory. And you cannot make swapfiles in internal memory? Can I still increase RAM?
Thanks. I will most likely Greenify, Seeder, Swap for Root (CM10). I need nformation on how to fit Most Wanted on my Xperia E.
MY INFO:
Sony Xperia E Single Sim
Android 4.0.4 (Kernel 11.A.0.68)
Rooted w/SuperSU (Kingo Android Root)
ROM Toolbox Lite, No Frills CPU Control, Swapper for Root (Not Working).
2GB of Internal Storage with 600MB left (NEED TO KNOW HOW TO PUT APPS ONTO SD CARD, HEAVY ONES)
4GB SD Card with 3.09 GB available.
Sorry for the really REALLY large comment, lol.
Lag?
Get greenify donation pack and greenify the sony media apps as well, and basically everything except a few [like com.sonyericons.usbbox or something, systemui, lockscreen, launcher, etc] and I don't really think seeder works now[I've tried it on my XE,htc pico and a SII,works on none]
So,straight away flash pure performances or hyper cola package[never tried hyper cola package actually] and if possibe run v6 supercharger script.
And done.
@XPeRIAeUSeR
Whatever happens, DO NOT CHANGE THE vold.fstab! PEOPLE HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO HARD-BRICK (such that even Sony can't fix) THEIR PHONES WITH THIS! (clears throat) Now, with that out of the way...
This is the CM10 I use: ROM by jjm34, kernel by hsr0, guide by UltraGamerHD: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48837634#post48837634
Yes, Greenify frees RAM. It does so by "hibernating" apps and putting them out of the memory. When the apps are launched again, they are put back in the memory automatically, so you can continue using them. But don't use Greenify with IM apps (like WhatsApp), alarm apps, etc, as they need to run in background.
Hyper Cola Mod (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2404653) does stuff I really don't understand to speed up gaming a lot. However, you need to reboot after the gaming session, otherwise the battery will drain very quickly.
Swapper doesn't change the amount of RAM you have, but it adds swap, where apps can reside while they are not being used. Also, swap will not work on stock (ICS or JB doesn't matter), it needs CM10. Well, it only needs the CM10 kernel, but the kernel needs the rest of CM10, so you need to put the whole CM10 or your phone won't boot.
To put heavy games on my external SD, I use FolderMount - it mounts certain folders of your choice from the internal card to the external card, so the phone thinks the stuff is on the internal card, but in reality it's on the external card. Thanks to MatsPunt for telling me about it.
The stuff I mentioned (CM10 included) will help, but not much if you're already using ICS.
And once again, to remind you: Whatever happens, DO NOT CHANGE THE vold.fstab! PEOPLE HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO HARD-BRICK (such that even Sony can't fix) THEIR PHONES WITH THIS! Use FolderMount instead.
Your asking for the impossible
If you want a fast phone then buy one -_-, please do not expect much from our devices
I'm not really, I know you can max the CPU capabilities, I know ram can be increased and the people's comments above you.can improve so much of so little.

@Thanatos Um... not really. I don't really feel any difference in everyday usage (making phone calls, playing games, stuff) between a Samsung Galaxy Grand and my E. In fact, due to the smaller size, the E feels better to hold.
@XPeRIAeUSeR Try doing a clean wipe, reinstalling the ROM.

FolderMount works this way: when Android looks for files in a folder, say, /sdcard/Music, FolderMount redirects Android to a different folder, say, /external_sd/Music. So you can store your stuff on /external_sd, but Android thinks the files are in /sdcard.

Oh... you meant it that way. The source directory is
Code:
/sdcard/Android/data/com.ea.games.nfs13_na
The destination directory (replace external_sd with ext_card if you're using ICS)
Code:
/external_sd/Android/data/com.ea.games.nfs13_na
The name can be whatever you want. After this, install the game from the Play Store, and it'll get installed on the external SD card.

[GUIDE][ICS][Tune your TIPO for the Best Gaming Experience]

[SIZE="5" /][COLOR="red"]For bloatware removal guide go to post no. 24[/COLOR][/SIZE]
After a lot of research on xda I came across some mods which improve gaming performance.
Prerequisites :
1. A rooted phone
2. An unlocked bootloader (for installing custom kernels)
3. Basic knowledge about taking cwm/twrp backups, flashing scripts, restoring stock fw etc.
4. Make sure that you have busybox installed. If not ,download and install it from playstore.
5. Follow this guide if you are unable to get init.d support :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xpe...-stock-ics-t2177856/post38796669#post38796669
There are many custom roms available for tipo but I prefer using stock ICS firmware the most.
All mods below are for ICS and have been tested on latest stock firmware only.
Let's move to the first part -
RAM :
I found out that ICS uses less memory than cm 10.
I've used Paradox Rom and I found out that it uses a LOT OF MEMORY.
(Approximately 200mb+). Therefore I use stock rom. After applying the mods below ram usage is low.
1. First of all remove all bloatware from stock firmware.
You can delete update centre from /system/app .
2. I don't use social networking apps so I've removed Facebook,Whatsapp,Hangouts.
3. Don't use any task killer . They end up using more Ram and battery. Use only xbooster if at all. It's free on playstore
4. If you use a lot of apps you might want to use Greenify. Take care not to use experimental features -they consume more ram.
5. You should use a launcher that consumes less memory. The stock xperia launcher uses large amount of ram. I personally prefer Zeam Launcher.
6. If you are still short of memory ,you might want to swap a small amount of your internal storage and use it as RAM . The stock kernel supports swap. Here is a script to create swap files : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2359182
so no need to use roehsoft ram expander.
But be aware that swapping your internal storage for using as ram will decrease its life.
7. Reboot your phone once a day.
8. Freeze/delete those system apps which you do not use regularly. I have disabled google play store and google play services as they keep waking up the device at regular intervals.
9. Hypercola script is excellent for gaming :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2404653
I've attached a few screen shots of my ram usage
Kernel :
If you have unlocked your bootloader you can use custom kernels.
At present there are three available :
Vengeance by @rachitrawat
Link : http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-j-e/orig-development/kernel-vengeance-t2134810
Vengeance reloaded by @ShivangDave
Link : http://forum.xda-developers.com/xpe...ent/kernel-vengeance-reloaded-paused-t2540952
Enigma by @Yash98
Link : http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-j-e/orig-development/miro-tipo-enigma-kernel-ics-t2942101
ENIGMA is the latest kernel for tipo and from my experience ,its the best.
It has both CPU and GPU overclocked.
Graphics :
Reducing resolution and textures helps us to play new games smoothly.
Many of you know that installing GL tools zip causes settings to crash.
I found out that both Chainfire 3D and GL tools use same driver so you might try installing cf3d driver from chain fire 3d and use gl tools to change graphics settings. Then you can use GL Tools without bugs.
This init.d script helps to reduce lags in games and in launcher :

Storage :
Another hindrance to gaming is too less internal memory (2.15 GB).
But if you have a memory card, you can swap storages and your memory card will be used as internal sdcard. Thanks to @TeamMex for this.
you can verify it in Settings>>Storage.
Steps :
1. Using a file manager like Root Explorer ,navigate to /system/etc and search for vold.fstab file.
2. Backup your original vold.fstab file.
3. Download the file in the attachments. Rename it to vold.fstab (remove .txt from file name and replace it with the original file.
4. Reboot.
5. After reboot go to Settings >>Storage. And you'll see your external card as internal storage.
Follow the instructions carefully or you might end up with a bricked device.
6. If you want to revert simply replace the vold.fstab file with your backed up one.
You can also use apps like foldermount or GL to Sd if you don't like swapping internal -external storage
Please post your comments below and give your suggestions and I shall add them to the OP.
I shall be adding more mods/tips soon !!
And please don't hesitate to hit the thanks button if I helped you
Disabling Apps :
Another hindrance to gaming is the memory consumed by system apps such as power saver, update centre . We root users have better techniques for saving power !!
Now , there are many apps available in the playstore which can disable system apps but most of them are either paid or consume a lot of ram. I have found a technique of disabling apps on xda.
I don't know who the author is so I am unable to give credits.
The method is pretty much simple.
1. Use any file manager which has root access. I prefer Root Explorer.
2. Go to /system/app
3. rename app you want to disable to xxx.apk.bak where xxx is apk name.
Eg:- if ypu want to disable NetworkLocation.apk , you just have to add .bak at the end of file extension i. e., you write NetworkLocation.apk.bak
The above method is also applicable for user apps. These apps can be found in /data/app
Apps that can be disabled safely :
1. Update Centre
2. Power Saver
3. News and Weather
4. Facebook
5. Timescape
6 . YouTube
Root Explorer also contains thumbnails of apps so you can easily identify the apps from their icons.
Here I would like to add a small note about stock music player.
If you listen to music frequently ,stock music player runs in background and is not easily killed. It cannot be exited and starts running as soon as music icon is touched. An alternative to this would be Walkman app but Walkman has some permission issues with custom kernels like venegeance. Thus it force closes every time. Therefore it is advisable that you reboot your phone before starting any heavy game.
Moderators , if you see this post , please sticky this thread.
Thanks in advance
Playing gta san andreas with minimal lags
There you go guys !!!
Here are the best settings for playing GTA San Andreas :
Without wasting a second lets move to the first part
In Game Settings :
Go to in game settings->Display setup .Turn off Shadows and car reflections, set visual effects to low ,draw distance and resolution to 0%. Don't worry even after setting everything to low ,the game looks almost same as in pc.
Install enigma kernel if you haven't done it already.
Edit : Hypercola script drinks battery too fast. Better not use it.
Next , use defiant07's swap script . Links are already provided in one if the previous posts. Run script using script manager. Follow instructions in the script and choose "ext card" option as location to create swapfile . Do note that by choosing above option it will create swap file on internal sd card. Internal storage has normally the fastest read write speeds unless u're using a class 10 sd card.
Size of swap file should be 250 mb.
Set swappiness between 40-60.
Swapping with high values of swappiness for long periods will ruin your sd card and internal storage. See post 22 on page 3 for more info. So,use swap only if you require it. Playing without swap only results in more fc's nothing more. I am getting a frame rate of18 -20 fps even without swap.
CPU Settings :
Use any cpu control app .
I found out that setting too aggressive frequencies doesn't help. Rather device performance gets reduced due to overheating. I got highly satisfactory results by applying below mentioned freq and gov
Max frequency : 999 mhz
Min Frequency : 320 mhz
I/o scheduler : sio
Governor : ondemand
Use Enigma kernel v8.5 for best results
Heavy gaming with overclock will drink your battery.
For best results , after gaming for 2min from first launch, restart your game. It helps to clear up ram and thereafter gaming becomes very smooth .
My battery goes to 0% after 6-7 hours from full charge if I play gta san andreas continuously.
Please let me know if I missed out something and give your remarks towards this post. Have a good time playing gta san andreas !!

You should check out my newly added tutorial for disabling apps !!!
I have XE, but i bet these tips work for tipo:
- If you've deleted all background apps, dont use greenify. It consumes CPU and RAM.
- RAM Manager Pro is much better than Xbooster - have a try.
- Use old versions of media apps (FB, youtube, google apps...).
- If you have compatibility issues with ICS, or you want some more features, pick CM10. Its performance is nearly as good as ICS (I can get 280mb free).
- If you are scared of swapping (yeah, there is a slight chance of hard brick), use FolderMount to move the obbs to SD.
- in CPU management, use SmartassV2/ Ondemand governor instead of Performance, if you don't play 24/7.
Last: Don't try to play Need for speed MW on your phone if your PC can max it out. You should know what I mean.

All new Sony devices support it.
Tried this guide on my Xperia E1 and the gaming was a bit better than before, but not that much.

thanks for answer, but can you give me (or add to OP) OFFICIAL INFO about it, I tried a lot of swap apps on stock kernel without success

Thanks, great tip!
Here is my free RAM in hard multitasking mode (without Greenify) on TheBrainCandyS 1.3Final:

How to Increase RAM without SD card?

I am using CM13 on my rooted Xperia M. Upon setting up the SD card, I chose to use it as internal memory. I used swap file for the purpose, which, ofc, created a swap file on the Ext SD card. I've even used the partition method before. The problem is that the 1GB RAM gets used up very quickly. Even with 2-3 apps, the memory goes up to 800 MBs, everything becomes slow and none of the background apps are ready for me to use.
So, is there any way I could increase the RAM?
delete some app ! use greenify ! use rom toolbox to froze some useless system apps !

I don't have much of useless system apps, and I am using Greenify. On regular use (for now), it doesn't pose much of a problem for me, but at times, as I said, it seems as if the phone is underperforming.
From my experience the swap file makes your phone a lot slower, and internal memory swap file will shortage you phone's life ! Better search for a compact custom ROM and for some speed tweaks
Short answer: you can't. Sorry.
