[Q] Converting Google Maps to user app and linking with Link2sd? - General Questions and Answers

Hi,
I'm trying to free up space in my phone, and Google Maps seems to be one of the greatest offenders, clocking in at over 10 mb!
Since this is an app that can be added from the Market or flashed with gapps, I figured it must not be critical to the system, so I tried to convert it into a a user app with Link2sd to link it to the Ext2 partition, but no can do. Link2sd conversion fails.
I know I could download Titanium Backup or A2SDGUI and try with one of those, but... a huge doubt assails me... does Link2sd fail because this is one of those apps that I shouldn't fiddling with? Am I risking stability and performance if I link it to the sd card?
So the question is, should I go ahead? and if so, what method do you recommend?
In case it helps, I'm running a custom sense 3.5 rom on an htc wildfire s.
thanks!

Hello,
I am using CyanogenMod version 10.1.0-RC2-GT-S5830-cooper.
I did not had Google Maps pre installed on my rom so I downloaded it from google play. I linked it to my sd-Ext2 partition using link2sd and works perfectly. No stability and performance issues.
Try uninstalling Google Maps. Then install it and try linking it again. Worked for me.
Hope I Helped!

dont. it will brick.

I did that on my custom ROM and it worked fine. Not only: as GMaps was also one of the major offenders of battery life, I froze it via Titanium and created an icon on the desktop (it's a standard function of Titanium) that - when clicked - unfreezes and launches it. Now it is always available and does not wake up "by itself" to drain my battery!

Problems with Titanium Backup's "Integrate system app updates into ROM" feature.
I searched, but didn't find any documentation on this feature, so I did the adventurous thing and tried it out. It's supposed to replace the system apps in the ROM with the updated apk, therefore saving space in the system memory. But after the batch finished, all of the updated apps were completely gone...the originals AND the updates were deleted. Since there isn't a way to "undo" this function, I had to reflash the ROM. Does anyone know more about this option? Does it work with any ROM?

I faced the same probs. But here is a few tips to get back your app:
1. Use titanium backup, run Batch, uninstall those apps that you have moved to ROM (which already highlighted in Red)
2. Find install apks for those apps in Google, reinstall it
3. Reboot your device
4. All app icons have back
Have fun, mate!!

I had the same problem; with the Android Market app disappeared. I have tried to re-install it the way you suggest, but the app stops working when I start any download from the market. Even reset the phone to factory settings, but I have the same problem. Any clue?
Thanks!!!
I just did a hot restart and it was fine for me.

I was having a similar problem with my Galaxy Note on ICS 4.04.
Whenever I tried to integrate the Play Store it would delete both the update and the old app and I would have to reinstall the APK.
I also noticed recently that a few other updates that appeared to be integrated successfully reappeared in the list of available updates to integrate, like they reverted to user apps after a reboot?
What finally fixed it for me was selecting the option in Titanium Backup Pro *Menu; Preferences; Advanced Settings; Check the box "Auto-integrate sys Dalvik into"
I then did a backup of my launcher app, long pressed on the backup and selected "Convert to System App", then single pressed on the app backup, selected restore then selected app data only"
It prompted me to reboot, after reboot when I checked the"batch, integrate updates into system ROM" all the apps which I was having problems with had disappeared from the list, and appear to be integrated now.
I don't know if it was the reboot or enabling the option in Titanium Backup, but something changed.
I have some problems also
I used Titanium mainly to integrate the updates into rom in my previous htc sensation and in my galaxy s3 and it worked fine with them. Now it does not work properly with my galaxy s4. After the integration some apps crash, Chrome, Dropbox. Some of them only delete the update and leave the old one in rom. If I go to google play the update is there to be installed again or some apps just prompt for the update when opened. I sent an email to the developer but I have not response. I have used it successfully in my previous phones but it is not working in this one. Any help is appreciated.

Yep, I'm having this exact problem. First the apps didn't show up, so I performed a hot restart. They're all back now, but Dropbox, Chrome, G+ and others that were integrated are all crashing now.
I imagine it's mostly to so with new security features with the S4. If you're using an S4 please stay away from this feature until it's officially recognised as an issue by the TitaniumBackup developer. I'll reflash PDA shortly and report back if that resolves the problem.

I did reflash the phone with the stock firmware and everithing is good. I have tried some apps but it did not work. I just leave them there until titanium backup is updated. This is the most used feature for me and now is not working.

Sorry, I have been busy to come back. Well, some work, others no. Chrome did not work but I did google Maps, google play, and several other updates. I did not mess with ChatOn since if something goes wrong it could break S voice and S translator. I just did now Google music and Flipboard. Usually I have to reboot in order to have the shortcut in the apps or to fix the name of them. For example, after integrate flipboard is in the drawer with the name and no icon, it launched fine, google music was fine and worked fine. After reboot the icon came back. The only problem is that if does not work then I have to convert the system app to user in order to make it work. Yesterday I converted the jelly bean photosphere camera to system and it was converted but did not work. It force close, then I tried to converted to user app and it took a long time and just was frozen there. I stopped TB but the camera disapear from the drawer, since rebooting fix the icon or name problem, I did it. My phone did not pass the samsung galaxy logo on boot. It was just a black screen after the logo and pressing the power button did not power on or off when I pressed, only when I released. Lucky me that I did a NAND backup before this process and still I could access download mode and the CWM which I used to restore my phone with the backup in my external card. After everything was as before I started. Now I will be more careful when I do this doing a backup before starting.
Samsung Link update integration did not work, force close. Samsung Hub worked but when press the back button to close then force close. Group play seems to work since it opens and go to the start page and no problem when I press the back button.
Still having same problem
Several programs quit working after converting apps to rom. I couldn't get them to work and finally put the locked rom back in, then unlocked it again. I have a verizon galaxy s4 me7 sch-I545 and the update didn't help here.
i want to know if i do this method, does the phone memory will get smaller if i do this again if the system apps getting new update?
hey there,
i have to grab out this thread because i have problems too. almost every app i integrate into system rom force closes, when i try to start it.
even chmod a+x didn't make it better (but the other apps in /system/app are not executable, so this had no sense).
i'm using the latest cm11 nightly for the motorola photon q. is there a known solution?
I have the same issue with this function as rdefranx.
After the integrate process, all updates are fine and i have the old versions again which i have to update. Repeated the process with single apps with showing same results again.
I also sent an so to the developer, but that's a shame: You never ever get an answer if you have a problem with titanium backup.
The app is good and helped me a lot. But shame on the non existing support. Really disappointing and unprofessional. Oh yes: i paid for the app. Thank you.
Hi, I just quit using his feature. I don't know if will work with my note 3 because I don't want to have problems. I will be subscribing to this thread in case a solution is found.
Also happened to me 4 days ago using a Moto X. Except for me it also deleted the Google keyboard & play store among others.
So I was left with no keyboard to type with and no play store to download from. After a factory rest it meant that by having no keyboard I couldn't even type anything on my phone to create a google account to restore the aps & Keyboard with. I had to reflash the whole rom again, and will stay clear of integrating the apks. I did this 4 days ago, so i'm not sure if titanium has updated since then.
Same problem with me. LG G2 Mini Official KK4.4.2 rooted, after Integrating system apps in ROM almost all of them crashing. Don't think that has to do with titanium, but with the android version. I used tha feature on my old LG P350 (stock rom+cm) and worked perfectly. But now in kitkat is messing up. Btw i'm using the latest version of titanium pro

Newbie questions before changing ROM on Desire S

Hello,
I have few questions to ask before changing my ROM. Many of these already should have an answer but it's better to ask for me, even if I've already searched the forum.
Data on SD Card: as far as I understand, flashing a new ROM doesn't affect the SD card data. Isn't it? In this case, old applications that have been moved to the SD card continue to stay there. Do you think it's the case to make a cleanup of those applications before flashing?
I've done a backup using ClockworkMod into the SD Card. I've read that somebody had problems restoring such a backup in case of necessity. Is this so risky? If I launch the backup restore through CWM, does it restore my previous ROM (the official one in my case) with all my previous settings without any problem?
SMS Backup: I think I can use an application like "SMS Backup & Restore" without any problem even the ROMs are different. Isn't it?
Contacts and Calendar appointments: I use Funambol to sync my contacts and appointments with. What I need once I've flashed the new ROM is simply to install Funambol on the device and start the synchronization? I guess the answer is yes of course, here.
Applications installed using the Android Market: what does it happen when I login with my gmail account? A massive install starts? My applications should be restored automatically without any risk to loose my application on the Android Market on the web? I hope this is true also for AppBrain.
I saw this is the last 3.5 Sense ROM. Is this stable and safe to flash?
May I select Italian language for the new flashed ROMs or they are only English?

If you flash a rom you sd card will not be touched.
you ll not need to reinstall all app, unless you don t format data.
Market downlods automatically all your previous downloaded apps
It s very annoying.
Your google account will sync your Contacts and calendar
Clockwork will restore your backup so it ll restore your previous rom
Sense 3.5 need hboot 2 to work propriely.
Virtuous is a good rom with sense for old hboot
All rom are universal instead of MIUI,you can choose any language.
If you have other question, you can pm me in italian

1. Data on SD card will not be affected. However old apps on SD card will not be recognized any more. You can use Titanium to backup and then restore your apps.
2. In case of fail on ROM restore, you can use RUU to fallback to your official ROM. Just go to Settings\About phone\Software information to write down your ROM version so that you can find appropriate RUU later.
3. Yes, I think. Or you can use My Backup Pro to backup.
4. You can sync Contacts and Calendar to your Google account and restore them later.
5. If you add your Google account right after 1-st booting, the phone will do a massive install from the Market, and this could lead your phone to hang and may cause to fry an eMMC. Just let it boot as normal without adding Google account, and you can add later in the Settings/Account & Sync.
6 and 7. I have no idea.
Thank you very much guys!

These two things make me confused. As far as kylon says and as far as I understand, if the /data directory wiping is not performed, I will automatically find all the application installed on the new ROM, but only as regard the applications on the NAND. Even this sounds me a little be strange but possible, so is this something that avoid me to reinstall all the applications using the Android Market as vndnguyen says at point 5?

Do you suggest to install that hBoot after or before flashing the 3.5 Sense ROM?
Thanks a lot.
you should wipe all partition before installing new ROM, this is mandatory, so the only way you can restore your installed apps is via Titanium backup (for 3rd party apps or apps from unknown source) or Market (for apps from Google Market).
If u install a rom without wipe anything the rom will wipe only /system,so when you boot the rom all your apps will be there and the new system is installed

So it seems there are two contrasting opinions here. Despite that I've seen that it is suggested to always wipe all partitions maybe I'll do.

By the way. I've seen that ROMs like the Virtuous have the overclock.
I don't want the overclock damage my Desire S, so I would like to know what do you think about that and if it is recommended to install the patch mentioned in the "Important Notes" anyway.
I don t like overclock but sometimes can help
Personally i m using set cpu 998/192 smartass
I actived jit and other tweaks to improve performances so my phone is fast with a low cpu(teted 850mhz fully working)
I don t use any patch

Application Incompatibility

Thanks for reading this
I've been playing around with some roms, and I found something strange. I have a game called "Realistic Summer Sports" that I have backed up in titanium backup; when I try to restore it in another rom, titanium backup sends me to the installation page (as if I were sideloading the app; it is the page that lists all the permissions). On MIUI (gingerbread), I have no problem installing the app, but on roms like CM9 and gingersnap (which I really want to try), it says "application not installed" although I am 100% sure the game is compatible as it runs perfectly fine on MIUI.
Anyone know the reason and/or a solution for this? I have already tried creating an apk and moving it to /data/app but it does not show up anywhere.
Any help is much appreciated
Do you use app2sd or such scripts on cm9?? Its pretty buggy to restore using Tb when you are using such scripts!!
Edit: If you are not using such scripts. Go to Tb settings and ENABLE " Migrate System Data" then reboot and try restoring. See if it helps!!!

[Q] RH-01 Error when trying to open Google play store

I just rooted my phone from Jelly Bean 4.1 and am running the latest stable CM10 rom out. I also installed gapps, but wasn't sure if I had installed the right version. When I try to open the Google Play store, I get an error that says "Error retrieving information from sever. [RH-01]". My Wi fi and 4G are both on. I can access internet via stock browser. Also, when I try to search something it tells me that Gmail has stopped working.
same thing here, after i installed lots of apps to my microsd's 2nd partition using link2sd, i got all apps except system apps disappeared from 'My apps' at google play store though i could still see them as 'installed' when i search their names at google play store
i used link2sd to link around 900 mb of lib, dex and apk files, my second partition is ext 3, im using jellyblastv3 with kuro kernel that supports up to ext 4 my microsd is 16 gb and partition is around 1024 ~ 1078 mb
This didn't happen to me before, well im not used to link this lot of files but you know galaxy y has 195 mb internal storage and dalvik cache takes most of it and the apps that use app2sd method still take some space from internal so i also linked them.
The methods i tried :
Fixing using titanium backup market doc (after a cache, data cleaning of app store)
Tried to mess with link2sd, tried everything except 'relink all' but the problem is not about link2sd, all my apps are working fine
Deleting play store cache & deleting google framework cache and data, THAT led me to this error, while i was trying to get the other apps to show up in my apps list things gone worse.
I couldn't find any solutions on the internet for link2sd, been googling this for last 3 days, i'd appreciate any help
I've had the same issue. Erasing cache doesn't help, removing Google account doesn't help, reflashing doesn't help. I had to restore a backup to get the play store back.
I had the same issue with my phone, whenever I factory reset my phone I get that error. I had to flash through Odin, to another stock ROM and then go from there. Was never able to get around it or figure out why it wouldn't work.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Fixed but still got problems
My error was caused coz i messed up with 'google framework' at gemini app manager too much, it changes app auto runs and i didn't know anything about google framework back then, i re-enabled some autoruns and its fine now, you could also try that app, its free on google app store
BUT i still couldn't find a solution to this :
I have got total of 210 ~ 216 apps installed on my phone including system apps, theres only like 16 showing up on the market (which i reinstalled or newly installed them recently from google play store) the rest aren't displayed at 'my apps' page, but i can still see them as 'installed' when i go to their download pages.STILL i can't update them, while appbrain market tells me they are outdated (its expected as i didn't update any programs due to this problem for last 2 weeks) google play store just shows 'Open, uninstall' options at app's download page
Is there any ways to fix this without losing all my apps data? I tried reinstalling from old backups but no luck, i don't wanna lose my apps data and i don't know how to backup my data without apks included
Bump.
Anyone else figured out any fixes. This seems to be affecting several people.
Go to apps- all google play store, clear cache, data and disable. Then google services framework clear cache and data and force stop. Reboot. Should get a notification for updates and go back into apps- all scroll to the bottom and enable play store. This has worked for me the last few times I got this error.
By the way I solved the problem by flashing the correct gapps for 4.1

****EDIT**** : Can only get apps installed from google play store work, the rest (like installed from sd card) won't get linked to play store
looks like i found the fix, reinstall every single app (got 216 atm ) with their orginal APK without using titanium. It seems like titanium had problems while backing my apks up, perhaps its something about titanium failing to sync my data (i usually do full backups with data so this shouldn't happen) Devs should really create some apps - scripts to fix this kind of sync problems, i found only one app @ xda so far, but it scans the google play store database, not all of the databases on the phone, even if i point my ext as database it won't work, its so annoying how i gotta reinstall my whole 216 apps, probably gonna take one day cause i don't have backups of all my apks, only big ones (such as games).
if you don't wanna get same errors as i did :
use the default play store
NEVER use nandroid advanced restore unless you know what your doing
make sure titanium backup works well
always backup your data before flashing anything that has something to do with your system (such as roms, scripts)
NEVER use autorun managers on system apps (last time i disabled some autoruns about sms service, it took 1 - 2 days for my msgs to appear at my friends' phones.)

By the way I solved the problem by flashing the correct gapps for 4.1

what is the right gapps?
Another problem...
seems like most of the apps that i install from my SD don't get linked to google play store, they aren't even in the database, only apps that are installed from google store got their links correctly, someone help please
NOTE : i also get 'error retrieving info from server, RPC:s-5:AEC-0 if i wipe dalvik cache via CWM
IMPORTANT UPDATE : It seems like my apps divided into 2 different adroid IDs, probably cause titanium wasn't able to detect my new ID,
Any suggestions about syncing my android apps' IDs without having to reinstall them?

check your FW version and proper gapps here: http://goo.im/gapps
None of these fixes have worked for me.
Anyone have something that's worked?

Resize the system partition?

I am running a stock image on my N5 with root and need to add an apk into the system partition but the problem is that I have only 4mb left on there and the apk does not fit. Is it possible to resize the partitions and:
Still keep your data
and/or
Allow for OTA installations down the road?
Short answer is no. And you certainly can't do it without wiping everything else. Repartitioning Android partitions is not for the faint of heart. It takes a lot of knowledge and can easily brick your device.

Why don't you just simply delete some unused pre-installed apps from /system?

He will need to revert changes in order to run the OTA process.

Plus, with a nexus image there really isn't much stuff to delete as there is on a carrier image

What i am really trying to do is get the droid circle widget working which should live in priv-app in system. I wonder if I can symlink from the user data partition

Stock Google OS comes with a ton of crap on /system that really belongs on /data. You delete all those apps, then download them from the playstore. 300ish MB free on /system.
I wrote a script to do this here, or you could use @vomer CleanRom that gets rid of some crap. My script (from memory) keeps stock keyboard, stock camera, and a stock launcher. Everything else is gone and can be reacquired through the playstore, the way it should have been from the beginning.
If it bothers you, could could use TiBu to back up that app data before you delete them, then restore after playstore install.
Who cares about OTA? Really not of concern.
Thank you for putting me on the right track. What I wound up doing was converting a couple of the apps that are baked into the stock ROM from system to user apps with TiBu. Worked like a charm!
awesome ...

Thanks for your awesome and simple script - great idea!
Worked on my Nexus 5, 6 and 7. Boosted free space by 360 MB.
Regards.
Update : your script also worked on my Nexus 6 running Stock Marshmallow Version "mra58r" now that I have 863 MB free on /system.

Same issue with CM13
I'm facing low system space when installing CM13.
The ROM installs correctly. However, when I go to flash GAPPS, I get a low system error.
How can I fix this?
Flash back to stock, perform a factory wipe, flash twrp, flash cm and gapps. Hopefully, those fixes the issue.

Original link to script above is dead. Any chance we could still get the script, particularly if it would still work okay on Android 6 (Marshmallow) or 7 (Nougat)? Thanks.
