Cannot get Gapps to flash on CM7.2 Stable. - T-Mobile LG G2x

I followed the instructions for the CM7.2ROM but I cannot get the Gapps to flash even though it says it successfully installed the Google Apps. I did the "gapps-gb-2011-0114-signed.zip". Should I be using a different one?

What do you mean by saying it didn't flash? Also, you're using an older version, not the latest

CWM says it did flash successfully, but none of the Google Apps are in the app drawer. I wanted to use a stable version so that's why I went with the CM7.2.

Did you flash it immediately after the ROM? Or did you reboot first, then flash it?

I did it immediately after the ROM, then i tried it later on and both ways didn't work.

Did you go through the initial setup after booting?

With the ROM? Yes. Also now the battery is stuck reporting 100%.

I reflashed CM7.2Stable, then the Faux kernel, then Gapps. I waited 10 minutes after the ROM flash and then rebooted between kernel/gapps flashes. The progress bar got to about 20% and then said installation complete in CWM. Also, the battery has a question mark instead of a level. Maybe the kernel isn't playing nice?

Have you tried a nightly instead of stable? Nightlies are pretty much stable now. Also, I'd recommend temasek's cm7 build. Super smooth and stable, as well as more tweaks. Do it all without rebooting in between. Also make sure you have an up to date CWM or TWRP.

This Temasek ROM? I'm using CWM 5.0.2.0.
Where's the current CM7 thread? The "Take 2" went to page 101 and then it was closed. I tried downloading the most recent nightly and it's an empty file. cm-7-20120812-NIGHTLY-p999.zip

Ok, so just to verify my process should look something like this:
0. Backed up NANDROID in case I screw something up...
1. Wipe Data/Factory Data Reset
2. Wipe Cache
3. Wipe Dalvik
4. Wipe Battery Stats
5. Flash ROM (cm7kang-G2x-128)
6. Flash GAPPs (gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip)
7. Flash kernel (Faux 050)
Sit 10 minutes, then start messing with it.
Look good? Do I have to format "/system" after step 3??

The zip auto wipes system, you also don't need to wipe battery stats.

Also the Factory Reset wipes /cache too so no need to do that twice either.
Flashing Temasek ROM now and will use Faux 050 and gapps at the same time.
EDIT: Ughh... Gapps only went to 20$ or so and then zipped across and said it was installed. Is it suppose to take its time with the progress bar?

Update cmw and try another rom to see if ur having the same problem.

So I feel like an idiot... I thought this whole time that the gapps included Maps, Gmail, etc but unzipping the ZIP file it's only the market and a few other things. My phone definitely has Market/Play store and everything else there. Drrr....
So, what's the difference between the Tenasek and CM7.2 nightlies? Is one better than the other? Same goes for Trinity and Faux kernels.

I can just flash 66 as is? Don't have to flash a stock unrooted version first like you do when you brick?
Do you have any idea why this could have happened? I did everything it said on the page and even watched an installation video for the ROM following every step by step instruction. What the hell does formatting system, data, and cache do in recovery? Never had done it before and as soon as I did my phone just messed up. Also, if I flash 66 using odin will my old backups work again?

Cool thanks. Flashing 66 now through odin. My backups have worked fine before (the exact same ones that just failed). Once this is finished and I test out my backups (assuming they work) how should I go about reflashing JellyWiz? Should I format the system, data, cache again or just do the normal wipes? I'm afraid formatting will mess it up again. Is CWM inferior to TWRP? Thinking about using a different recovery after all of this.

I personally use cwm and to me it's more a matter of preference. I too have had a error restoring backups once and it was after a system wipe. A word of advice, because this saved me, keep a ROM on your SD card at all times to be able to just flash in an emergency.

I think you missed my point, at this point he needs Odin. However, if you keep a zip on your SD card then if your backups gasp like his situation he can just fish that zip. It was simply some advice for future reference, were not all next to a computer ask the time. For people like me that just get an urge to flash it helps to have backups like this.

wipe data/factory reset
wipe dalvik cache
format system
flash rom
booted up flawless.
i also used this methid for paranoid android...i will probably update my guide with this. unfortunately i cant give any info on what formatting system is actually doing. never had to do this before??

I don't know why they are suggesting it but it doesn't do anything beyond the normal factory reset and then the zip formatting system itself.
Its just the manual way of doing what a clean flash does.
Why are people having issues restoring nandroids after doing this? Apparently bootlooping occurs after format/jb install/restore previous nandroid.

if im not mistaken formatting the system deletes the rom/kernel itself...normal factory reset from cwm recovery only deletes rom data/cache.

i wonder why i had to format system to get the latest jellywiz rom to not hang on galaxy s splash screen? it makes no sense.
Also, how does a format not erase your nandroids? It should also wipe titanium backups if they are not on your external. Am I wrong on that? Could formatting lose certain bits of info that the nandroid may not have partitioned, and that's why the restores are not working correctly?

[Q] ROM Flashing Question

Okay, So I have a Galaxy S III for VZW(SCH-I535) and I was wanting to flash a ROM but I do not know how. I read guides but I really don't wanna ruin my phone. Is there any ROMs that I can use with Odin that would be easier. I want to use the Latest Liquid Smooth ROM. Is there any way I can do this easily WITHOUT worrying about screwing up my phone?

That's not really necessary it's very easy. To flash roms you flash zip files, then your recovery does the work to copy all the files in that zip to the correct place, then when you reboot you have your ROM. So for liquid smooth here is my tutorial: 1. Download Liquidsmooth, the download link is in the OP of the LS thread, also download Google apps, you'll see download links for that in the LS thread, it's something you need for AOSP ROMs. 2. Both will download as a zip file, don't extract it and copy the 2 zips to your phone's SD. 3. Boot into recovery, select Wipe and choose the options data, system, cache, and dalvik. You will always check these 4 before flashing any ROM. No more and no less. 5. Choose the flash option, in the file manager find your liquid smooth zip, confirm flash, and let it finish. You are now on liquid smooth hooray but you are not done. 6. Since you're on AOSP you do not have Google apps which you need or you won't have a play store app. So now flash the Google apps zip the same way you flashed liquid smooth. Now reboot and voila. That is how you flash any ROM. But for touch wiz ROMs you do not flash Google apps.

Yup those 4. I think the ROM will wipe system for you but I like to wipe it anyway. Make sure you don't accidentally select "internal storage" cause that will wipe your SD card. What was the name of the gapps zip you installed? It should be called "gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip" you might have gotten a bad download with your ROM or your gapps or both. You can check the md5 to see if it matches. It if doesn't match you have a bad download.

Yes. The one currently linked in the CM wiki, http://cmw.cmfs.me/apexqtmo/apexq_recovery-10.2.img works. You were trying it with the old CM 10.1 recovery. This is far too old.
Magamo said:
I suppose it would, especially if not currently on the list in the OP. Although, keep in mind that the team is not yet ready to go into full support mode for these builds yet. This is just a preview of what we are working on.

Which recovery are you using? I do not know what version of recovery that ROM manager gets you. I've never used that. Please specifically flash a compatible recovery. Some time not long before the release of the recovery I linked, recovery could not access SD cards on the relay. The one linked is certified as compatible. If you're having trouble with your backup restore using that recovery, than it's likely a problem on your card or the backup set.

Thanks for the information, could you provide a zip file instead of a img for the recovery ?

Actually, I can link to my personal one.

Once you install it, remember to go into advanced, and reboot to recovery so that you're using the newer one rather than your older one.
Also, everyone, it's been pointed out that I'm an idiot. I was using a ParanoidAndroid Gapps package, that was deleting Gallery2, and replacing it with GoogleGallery. When using the correct Gallery app, video recording works fine.

Is it worth to install on wife phone, also how stable is the camera,

I'll point out where I say in the subject of the OP, this is a Pre-Alpha, and later in the thread where I said that the team is not quite ready to be in full support mode for this version, this is a preview release. The camera though is quite stable, so long as you are using the certified gapps linked by Nardholio, and also linked in the OP.

I would recommend the one from ROM manager should be the same.

The rommanager's one is 6.0.3.8, but can't mount the sdcard (need external mSD-reader).
Why doesn't it work on my phone ? Strange :s

It's been mounting my SD card just fine. Doesn't work 100‰ with ROM manager so I boot into recovery mode to do everything.

Slow TWRP?

Hi,
I am using the latest version of TWRP, but I see two weird things:
1.- It's slow to install ROMS, takes much more time than in the N4, really slow.. like three times more time!
2.- The date is messed up (1970 :S).
What is your experience?
The dates messed up but I don't think it's slow.

I don't have a n4 but I find twrp to run much faster on my n5 than on my s2 skyrocket.
Backup took a mighty long time...
Format of system partition or cache sometimes takes a while too, like15-20 min.

When I first installed twrp I tried to install a custom ROM but it was unsuccessful I had to restart Twrp for it to install successfully but no more problems after that?

Do u have the latest version 2.6.3.4? This issue has been fixed afaik. Wipes are very fast on my end.
Flashing some custom roms can take a while though.

Thanks for info!
My TWRP version is not the latest one, it's 2.6.3.2 (got it automatically downloaded with toolkit I think). Will upgrade then I get back home and see what happens.
U need the newest one

realy slow ??
Flashing Cataclysm rom takes about a good 3-5 minutes. It just shows an animated loading bar, but doesn't seem to make any progress, then all of a sudden finishes. Scary, but still installs fine.
Just doesn't install as quickly as say a Note 2 flashing a rom.
It depends on the ROM you are flashing. Flashing is very fast with OmniROM for instance.

formatting of /system is still extremely slow, even with 2.6.3.4. once /system has been formatted, everything else is very quick.

I disagree... A full wipe (system+data+cache+dalvik) requires about 5s to be completed. ^^

Full wipe from TWRP is quick, it's the wipe of /system when you install a ROM that is extremely slow.

What you're saying is that it's the ROM fault, is that it? Or this behaviour doesn't happen with CWM (flashing the same ROM obviously)?
a hammerhead wrote this.
Updating to latest twrp
May I ask where to get the latest version of TWRP and what is the best way to flash it, please? Thanks.

Download TWRP manager from the play store, there's an option to install TWRP recovery under advanced I believe. If not under advance its under one of the options
