It is true to some extend. Overclocking too much will weaken the processer. Best value of overclock for max would be 729 mhz or below for our phone.

it definitely reduces the life span ovr time...coz v r tryin to get more frm somethin dat cant handle that much clocks.. ... but i guess by d time it gets damaged... v wud hav used our phone more den enough.. :silly:

<729 . Eeverthing is NORMAL !!

I dont think.. normal OC will affect processor in any way.. its not a mechanical instrument which will
wear and tear with excessive use. You can damage a board only with more power.. eg: if you
provide 7Volt to a 5Volt circuit board.. which no one does i guess.
I think higher OC can damage only battery not the board. If you observe.. you will know its the
battery that gets extremely hot which inturn heats the phone.
Very high OC is not recommended because your processor works fast but your RAM and BUS are still
slow.. Ram flushes each time so the phone reboots unexpectedly.

Leaving your phone on an extremely high clock speed can potentially damage the phone. The higher the OC speed, and the longer the phone is running at that speed, the greater the heat buildup. You've got to remember that unlike computers, phones don't have spectacular cooling systems, therefore heat is a big problem. Letting your phone heat up too much can damage its delicate components, the processor and the battery. As with everything in life, if you overclock in moderation, you'll be ok. As others have suggested, keep it at 721 or less, and you should be fine. (I personally use 480/691)

at 600mhz..p500 is capable of handling the heat...
if you overclock it ...p500 device cant handle that much heat..although it works fine..but if there is too much heat caused inside ..then BOMM...BOOM..BOOM....

[DEV] Overclocking the GPU !!

Take a look at this link
The GPU has been overclocked to 200 MHZ result from stock 25 fps to 36.5...
The desire(+-27FPS neocore) has the AMD Z430 GPU wich is also on the acer Liquid running at much higher 34,6 FPS @ the same resolution 800x480 but UC cpu768 MHZ although it still preforms much higher on neocore !
I'm sure that some of you developers with the knowledge are prepared figuring this out to get the desire GPU preforming better !..
(tnx to beidl) for those who're trying to find the changes: http://git.linuxtogo.org/?p=groups/m...8a6a0dfe5ba912
The Snapdragon Processor holds the CPU and GPU in one chip... i dont know if youre able to do that...
EDIT: maybe changing some clocking and voltage values in kernel???
More performance can somehow be squeezed out of it tho. Its just not good enough with the power it holds

looks like only some parameters and 2 functions (pc_clk_enable and pc_clk_disable) were changed.
I don't have much experience with kernel developing, I'm just a stupid java dev. lol
But I'd like to see this added to the 2.6.32.9 kernels, and since we would be able to
change the clock frequency somewhere in /sys/module/clock/, something like a "SetGPU" would be a nice project to do.

[Q] A question about overclocking

Hi,
having registered here some time ago i've been reading many threads about custom ROMs and the kernels used. Many of them seem to support overclocking your phones CPU. The thing i'm wondering about is that there's kernels which actually overclock your CPU to double the speed its CPU is supposed to be running on (!!), giving the CPU some more voltage i believe.
Actually i'm a bit sceptical about how setting the CPU to such sick frequencies has a bad effect on the CPU's lifetime. The way i understood the problem with clocking the CPU high is always the heat development, meaning without proper cooling the CPU will simply "melt away" (at least that's how it is on desktop computers). Of course, CPU's on smartphones are not cooled or anything. Now that there seem to be many people here, developpers or not, who got deeper into the hardware, probably already opened up a phone, or have some experience with the long term consequences of overclocking.
So my final question is: What is safe and what is not? I saw for the Galaxy 3 for example exist different kernels, some non-overlock kernels, as some kernels only doing limited overclocking up to 800 MHz (which seems to be the most healthy option to me), but also some kernels overclocking up to 1300 MHz, which as i said seems kinda sick to me. Well i bet there's someone out there with a bit more experience than me regarding this so i'd be thankful for any answer.
I believe its safe as long as you dont keep the phone at high overclocked spds all the time. Besides, this chips are designed to last 5 years at least so if you overclock and shorten its life, you would have already changed your phone. In short, dont worry, just dont leave your phone at above 1000mhz all the time

You got a point there hehe. Technical progress is moving in light speed. Anyway, i want to make my phone last as long as possible of course. But it's true, with CPU stepping it won't run on the highest frequency the whole time, even if overclocked, so i guess that overheating won't be an issue.
The only time i overclock is when im playing 3d games. Other times mine is 700mhz at most

if you use a governor like OnDemand/Conservative, your phone wont always be on 1200 but usually on the lower values...It will go only to 1200 when needed

[Discussion][Q/A][INFO][25.6.12]Governers,OC,UC,I/O Schedulers,Kernel

So basically this is a general discussion or chit chatting for all of you about which governer is better ,best etc. I/O schedulers etc.
You can also ask question, queries about your current settings is it good and etc.
There are also three sections in this post too. Recommended settings by me, Tested ones. And also ones that I am testing. Those that I have tested have my remarks on them too
RECOMMENDED
Here are my recommended No-Frills CPU settings:
Max:1200
Min:300
Gov. InteractiveX(Gives a lot of performance boost and also battery friendly)
I/O: BFQ(Im now checking out other IO schedulers after found a good or better one i will update )(and also Because it fixes this issue.)
These are the setting that gives me the best/positive results on my unit. I do not OC as I see no obvious differences in speed as these settings are already more than good enough. And furthermore OC will decrease the life of the device so no point.
TESTED
I have tested these:
Max:1200
Min: 300
Gov: Smartassv2
IO: SIO
Remarks: I have tested these and I must say the performance and battery life was almost as good as those of the recommended settings These do perform almost the same as the recommended ones but battery wise is definitely an out for these if compared to the recommended one. I personally would still recommend and prefer those in the recommended section as both almost perform the same and this is more unbattery friendly.
TESTING
This are the settings that I am testing now:
Max: 1000
Min: 300
Gov: Conservative
IO: Noop
Remarks: So as usual, I will test and report back after about a week. As of now, performance wise, these really lose out to all the others that are present in this post. But battery wise its definitely a clear winner
SHORT VIDEO THAT I FOUND ON YOUTUBE
As usual, DO ANY CHANGES TO YOUR PHONE AT YOUR OWN RISK

In my opinion, this topic is kinda useless.
I know and i respect your effort, but these settings really depend on the user and how they use the device.
If i try the same settings and try it myself, i will probably have another opinion and other results.
Benchmarks mean nothing.
Also many other threads all over XDA were made to explain governors and I/O schedulers, and users can simply Google it and read, then chose what suits them.

ready for the technically paranoid answer
Overclocking is very dangerous(As if you didn't know) its actually pushing a processor to work on a higher frequency than the one it was made to withstand. As a preferred feature if you processor came from a good company(i.e they made the parts from good quality resources) and underwent rigorous testing for stability under extreme conditions.then the chances of any problems of the processor breaking under the technically specified frequency(i.e.600Mhz) are negligible but by over clocking the risk of damage to the processor increases finally it boils down not to the rom or the kernel(though the kernel provides the software side to reduce damage:good but on the quality of your processor some people can run the processor up-to 900Mhz some died trying to reach 725Mhz finally the thing is how willing are you to take the risk.Test the conditions. check the stability of the phone of the given frequency never charge while overclocking(cause it will result in extra cycles taking place in the battery) simply said the battery might explode!
finally to answer your question yes the processor can break @ that frequency and the chances of it breaking are greater if you have overclocked a long time and if your phone is also aging(means older than a year)

[Q] Sensation Heating Issue!!! Probable Solution!!

Pardon me if i have brought up silly or crazy question but I have to ask it
I have a sensation and have been using vipers rom from very beginning with cpu to 1.5Ghz and 3d/2d slightly overclocked. and there is heating issue at area around Sim/sdcard slot and front screen part while surfing web or playing games(basically while using resource hogging apps) That's where cpu is located i believe. [also the phone starts lagging when it heats TOO MUCH]
Then past month i clocked every thing back to sensation's default. it helped to cool the temp lil'bit.
Then few days ago I switched to Sultan kernel which dramatically makes my phone lot cooler than it used to.(but still heats up) I overclocked to 1.5Ghz and is still cool. Undervolted to -50 worked fine. Then i started to tweak 3d/2d gpu overclock/underclock and it heats up like before. So, here i think proper tweaking the cpu,gpu can generate less heat on the phone but I have tried many things as i mentioned above and i am not sure what exactly is making the phone hot or cool down or what to do about overclocking/underclocking/undervolting, etc, etc, etc
So here I am asking other user for their guide for proper tweaking the phone to its best performance without heating it up. Any suggestion??:silly: what cpu freq?? 2d gpu freq?? 3d freq?? undervolting?? leaving stock??
I dont mind clocking the cpu to 1.2ghz or 1.5 ghz.. the processor on sensation can handle upto 1.8 or so just fine. But all i want it to generate less heating, more performance and definitely more battery life.. so any suggestion?:fingers-crossed:
This info can help other noob out there (specially me) to tweak their phone without worrying what to do and what freq to use....Cheers
For more info i use anker battery.. and as far as i know battery is not the cause for heating on sensation.
Bricked is the best kernel for the heating problem. Don't oc the cpu and gpu and you should be fine. The only problem is that bricked is a bit laggy
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using Tapatalk 2
overclock gpu produce much heating (my experience) and that also bring not much more performance. Overclock cpu produce of course some heat too, but not that much. Also undervolting the cpu reduce the heating.
I think the coldest one are, which are more close to stock.
Hi,
Overclocking whether CPU or GPU will definitely cause heat, you cannot have both performance and coolness besides each other ever; in case you want performance, then you have got to tolerate high temperatures and further, a bit lag. But if this heating thing bothers you too much, then you have to stay with a lower CPU/GPU frequency. In this case, if you still do not want to lose your performance TO AN EXTEND, then I recommend flashing an AOSP/KANG ROM instead of Sense based ones.
Good luck :good:

In case you've flashed Sultan Kernel in which Ville C2's GPU drivers are included, then IN MY OPINION there would be no problem at all.
I'll provide the link to it if you couldn't find the correct one.
That pretty "Thanks" button's waiting for U, in case I helped

don't worry for the heat my phone goes up to 80°C and is still working fine. no problem at all. so remember to not use 1800 mhz use max 1620mhz and max 320 gpu 3d. will wil get good perf. always use PYD-X or SB FM (ICS) or (JB)
put it in the fridge when overheat.not joking.i always need to do that:screwy:

I used to do that too with my old phone.:highfive:
Currently clocked everything at it's default with -50UV and it works great without heating too much like before. Although one question remains for me. Does underclocking gpu has any negative impact on performance????

answered you... if there were more answers, there would have been done already for your former post.

Underclock your 2D GPU to 145MHz on my kernel. Underclocking the GPU can make transition animations and games laggier HOWEVER unclocking the 2D GPU instead of the 3D GPU will do no harm and the difference is barely noticeable. Your homescreen will also be just as smooth as before because Rosie is rendered by the 3D GPU, not the 2D GPU. If underclocking your 2D GPU to 145MHz doesn't make your phone as cool as you want it to be then you can also lower the speed of your 3D GPU. If your phone is still getting hot after unclocking your GPU then use a more energy efficient CPU governor like Badass or Intellidemand. Also, in my kernel's Aroma installer, enable mpdecision. The mpdecision in my newest beta for Sense ICS ROMs (r18b3) works best, so install r18b3 and see how you like it. You can download r18b3 from here: http://goo.im/devs/sultanxda/Pyramid_Sense_BETA/Sultan-kernel-r18b3-Sense-Aroma.zip

flashed r18b3, clocked cpu at default freq, 2d/3d both slightly under-clocked, -25UV, enable mpdecision, intelldemand governer and walla.... its running smooth again :victory: playing nfs, no laggy feeling whatsoever, still heats up at the bottom part but its bearable
And thank you for your awesome kernel man.. keep up the good work:good::good::good:

Be careful with battery life on r18b3 though; people have reported that the phone doesn't go into deepsleep with Intellidemand so your battery may drain.

thanks for the heads up, using smartassV2 right now...any prob with this governer??
EDIT: nope all governors are consuming abt 50% of processor power while in screen off or deepsleep/ideal mode.
