Disobedient Brightness Levels [CM9] - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

I don't know if I'm barking up the right tree, but my CM9 auto-brightness is too bright. I've tried tweaking the light sensor levels, but, if I understand it right, they're not being honored. IN the screenshot you can see that my sensor is currently reading "100" and the screen's brightness is maxed to 255. But my levels say anything between 100 and 500 should set the brightness to 67. Am I not understanding what I'm doing, or is it just broken?

I'm pretty sure there's always been something up with the auto-brightness on CM9. For me at least. I've mentioned it before but didn't get much of a reaction. What happens to me is that, if I'm sitting in a dark and set the screen brightness to auto, it'll immediately go down to fully dimmed. And then I go and start reading xda or whatever. Then my screen times out and shuts off, and when I wake it back up the brightness goes to fully maxed. And only by toggling auto-brightness off and back on will it go back to fully dimmed.
So that's my experience with auto-brightness. I've never manually tweaked the levels, but I would imagine it wouldn't even matter if I did.

"Allow Light Decrease" is the Key
I finally stumbled upon some information in this thread: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/23464-toro-b32-lights-decrease-when-allow-light-decrease-is-unchecked/#entry641152
It seems that "Allow light decrease", which was unchecked for me, is quite important. I just assumed that the automatic backlight worked continuously both ways -- brighten when outside, dim when inside. But that's not the case. Without "Allow light decrease", it only ever brightens and then stays there. It will reconsider when you unlock your screen I think.
So I added a 5s window filter, enabled allow light decrease and *bam!* If I put it in bright light, the screen gradually brightens. It I go back in the dark, it soon dims. Exactly what I always wanted.
It now obeys the light levels!

Hmmm unfortunately that doesn't seem to be fixing it for me. If I quickly double press the power button to turn the screen off then back on, the brightness will go from being fully dim to fully bright, same as before, even with that checked. Real annoying haha.

this was my solution http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1828180
Edit: though I'm surprised you get anything at all, my cm9 light sensor page says -1, maybe its an issue with InstigatorX kernel, idk. But the app I linked in the other thread works for me.

[App][2.1+] Glimma soft alarm clock

Hi everybody !
Here is another alarm clock, but different
The light of the screen wakes you up, and if you are really tired, a backup alarm sound is played.
It really works if you sleep in a dark room, and because the phone is near you, you are the only one to wake up silently. You don't bother madam.
Also, in the evening the phone goes to sleep (dim the screen light, turn off sounds, wifi...) and wake up in the morning (everything turns on)

This app is still in developpement, please report bugs if you see them (menu / bug report). All the features are not done, so they can be desactived.
PLEASE SET UP YOU USUAL ALARM SOFTWARE IN CASE OF BUG.
For example if you want to wake up at 8am, this software will open at 7h30 with the minimum brightness and increases softly until 8:00. You HAVE TO set up you usual alarm software at 8:02 in backup.
Here is the description for the market (if you see mistakes, plase notify me, I'm not english) :
This gorgeous software softly wakes you up. It turns your phone on 30 mins before the alarm with the darkest screen and increases slowly the brightness.
In the middle of the process it can play birds sound, and if you didn’t wake up 1 minute after alarm time, it plays a strong sound to be sure you don’t miss. It also let the phone check the emails by turning the notification sound off and the wifi on. So when you wake up, you don’t have to wait to know what’s new
If you sleep in a dark room it really wakes you up with the light, and if the phone point at you, your wife doesn’t wake up !
One more thing: This software is able to turn your phone in a “night mode” the evening, and turn back in day mode the morning. And so it shuts down the notification sound, the wifi…
This app is free for standard use, with the best settings. If you want to customize if, please leave me a few money (you choose!) and everything will be unlocked.
For those who care, here is the explanation of the authorizations:
ACCESS_WIFI_STATE
CHANGE_WIFI_STATE
WRITE_SETTINGS
To open or close wifi, the evening or in the morning.
WAKE_LOCK
DISABLE_KEYGUARD
DEVICE_POWER
To turn on your phone and change the brightness of the screen, to keep the phone on.
FLASHLIGHT
HARDWARE_TEST
CAMERA
To make the led flash light blinking at the alarm time.
RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED
To activate the software after a reboot and set up the next alarm.
READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE
WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE
To write debug logs, in developer mode.

Low Battery Precautions - battery brightness missing

Hey, i just wanted to let you guys know about Note 3 low battery precautions.
I was using my phone as usual, as i noticed there was brightness slider missing from notification pull-down menu. I immediately checked under: settings-> device -> notification panel ->Brighteness adjustment and setting was checked!
As i became furious, i unchecked and checked that option but it was still missing. At that point i was really upset as this feature is VERY IMPORTANT for me (quick access to brightness). So i rebooted my phone and tryed again, no success. In panic i started checking every thing on my phone, all processes i deactivated (all share play and stuff like that i don't need etc etc...) all defaults than i tought some third party app was to blame for that (many apps can not be removed from notification pull down menu (unfortunately))...
Than i checked if i can adjust brighteness manually in display settings and when i saw that that function was gray (unusable) it hit me... i saw my battery was very low, 3% so i figured this is the reason.
Phone disables the ability to change brightness. Furthermore i couldn't use camera and my music app shuted down at 1% level...
So next time you see brightness slider missing from notification pull down meni, check your battery level... it sure made my heart beat a litle faster...
Cheers

This is normal touchwiz behavior, imo nothing special or new..

Might not be, but it is for me since it's my first samsung smarphone.. it really grinded my gears..
My first Samsung phone also, however I would never have experienced this as I wouldn't run the battery down to anywhere near 3%.
I typically charge when down to 20 to 30% with the aim of increasing battery life

Text under brightness slider

Anyone else seeing the message "Maximized for best viewing in sunlight" under the brightness slider? Doesn't matter what the level is, I'm seeing this appear now whenever I adjust the slider after a reboot. Toggling auto brightness off doesn't remove the message. Even using default theme doesn't either.

I noticed the same on my s7 edge too this morning. Weird. When I slide the brightness to max, and then turn auto brightness off then on again. The text disappears. Then I go to settings to adjust the brightness. That way the text doesn't show up.
But if I adjust it using the notification panel, the text comes back again. Weird. Reboot doesn't help too.
Getting the same text under the brightness slider. Reboot, switching themes, changing launchers, or wiping the cache partition doesn't seem to help. Irritating.
Same here. Pretty annoying. You guys found a solution?
I had this Message too, but only when i move the Slider and the Sun is very strong. If i remove my Finger from the Slider the message disappears..

turn off auto brightness, restart the phone, then boom, text is gone - and you can set autobrightness back on.
Anyone found a solution for this? disabling auto brightness and reboot did not work for me. With an app that measure display brightness I noticed that even if ambient light is 0, the screen brightness is 40 (before the issue it was 0 with 0 ambient light). So I assume that this issue is eating my battery

One plus 7 pro "switching" from OLED to LCD "mode"

I got the phone 2 days ago and today I noticed a rather peculiar issue I don't seem to have noticed yesterday. I was browsing Instagram and there was this image that consisted of a lot of shadows and dark areas, as I scrolled lower the next image was much lighter and bright with almost no shadows and as I was seeing the image, the phone suddenly brightened up the shadows and the colours changed a little. I was surprised and I tested this in other apps such as reddit and the issue persists. If there is a lot of dark content on the screen, the shadows will be pitch black but as soon as the content gets bright, the shadows will get muddy and will behave like a LCD display. I even tried screen recording this but in the clip it shows everything is normal. This is annoying the hell out of me. Please help me.
What are your display settings? I'm pretty sure by default it automatically switches the resolution between 1440 and 1080.
Might be the oneplus video enhancer at work. Try toggling it off
I also noticed, it is due to the 90 hz, try to replicate your steps to 60hz, in my case it does not happen. I noticed it in the camera when making a dark photo at the time of opening it, it looked perfect to the delay of 2/3 seconds, it was horrible to see, the whole image turned blue and the black step to lcd (bluish gray very Dark). When using the camera or videos is reduced to 60hz in gallery up to 90hz

The display tapers down to 60hz in camera app, on call and while watching videos.
Change your settings.

Does it happen in bright areas? I've noticed when high brightness mode kicks in, blacks turn to muddy greys and when I go into a dark room, it normalizes.
Same issue with me. Funny, I couldn't find anything about this on the internet anywhere till today and came here to make a post about it. It's really annoying when I'm outside because the brightness automatically turns blacks to grey. Changing the brightness manually instantly fixes it though.
I think it might be a feature called adaptive screen or something? I don't have the device but I remember OnePlus mentioned something about optimizing the image displayed on the screen. Try to look if there's a setting about adaptive screen or brightnes
Is "Video enhancer" in Settings > Display enabled?
That will cause your display to shift between regular mode and "HDR" mode if video content is detected

Question Device manually locked?

This is not new to my 6a, but is consistently annoying. I use the power button 100% of the time to turn off the screen. But sometimes when I touch the FP sensor to turn it back on, I'm forced instead to use my PIN/pattern with the message "Device manually locked". What causes this and why does it happen seemingly at random?
Fortunately Smart Lock keeps it unlocked most of the time around the house...
Smart lock will require you to reauth every 4 hours. There's also a setting under "Screen Lock" - "Power button instantly locks. (except when kept unlocked by Smart Lock.)"
I've turned on Always On Display now too. This enables the sensor to be used without having to turn use the power button or double tap screen.

How is the battery life after turning on AoD? Did you feel any difference?
I need to test further. It is still deep sleeping fine and the AOD is off when the proximity sensor is covered, so the difference should be negligible.
Its usually like 3-4%/ hr with AOD on and <1% with it off

So should that option be turned off? I turned it off today and it seems to be working better. I guess what's not clear from the way that's worded is, if the power button doesn't "instantly lock" it, does it eventually lock based on a timeout?
I think I'm also getting better at using the sensor. It seems like it only gives you a couple of tries before forcing a PIN unlock and I think I've sometimes touched the sensor too lightly or even done sort of a double tap and used up all my attempts at once.

No difference. If anything it's better, lol. 3% over 5 hours. This is with the phone turned facedown so the display off. Deep sleeping fine.
