Screen goes blank and reboots? - Asus Transformer TF700

I've had my Infinity for about a week now and on at least 3 occasions I've had the tablet screen go blank and reboot it self after 10 seconds or so. When this happens the screen usually turns all white or all black and is unresponsive. This has happened on firmware 22 and 26. Anyone else experiencing this?
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using xda premium

I have experienced this twice. It happened to me last night in fact. I hit the back button to go back in the XDA app and it went all white. I had to hold the power button for a few seconds before it would reset though.

Do you have an NTFS-formatted micro SDHC in it by any chance?

I've had this happen many times mainly while switching apps... Usually between games to normal apps like email... I have mine completely stock without any sd card...

Happend with my tab too. But only with games so I supposed they are not perfectly adapted to the Chip and thus crashing it or the other way round.

This has happened without any sd card present. Tab is completely stock, not rooted and it is always between apps.

possibly the task manager
Did a little searching and found someone having a similar problem here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1523487. I've been having the screen go out sometimes and it reboots, other times nothing on my bootloader shows up and it's just my background wallpaper.
Someone suggested that it was due to the the task manager widget. I can confirm that I've been running this widget. If this is a common factor among all of us then maybe we have our culprit.
Edit: I don't have a microsd inserted.

This has also happened to me a few times and I'm also using the Asus task manager widget. I'll try removing it now to see if that works.

Same problem here
Usually happens when I'm mass transfering files and doing something else
Will try to remove widget
Edit:
Removed widget and used heavily for a few hours
no black screen/reboot

This happens to me too while playing scramble with friends.

I sent mine back because of this exact problem... happened four times going to black (only settings icon and text showed) and once to white on .22 and .26 update. New tab arrives today... Hopefully all is good this time.

I get it about every other day of heavy use. I am using the Asus task manager widget.
Last time it happened I had been actively checking my screen on time to contribute to a battery thread and noticed my timer lost about 20 minutes of time after the reboot, FWIW.

Screen turns on when netbook closed

This has bugged me forever, and I've never seen anyone else talk about it, and it's a difficult/impossible thing to search for. If you turn your screen off while docked, then close the netbook, does your screen turn on? Mine does. my screen timeout is set to 5 minutes (since I use it like a laptop) so this is annoying as it drains an extra 5 minutes of battery. Anyone figured out a fix for this?
Sent from my Transformer TF101
mine was doing that all last week and it was killing my batterylife so that i would have 0 in dock and 60 in tab at the end of the day vs my normal 60in dock 100 in tab. i just reflashed revolver and rebooted a couple times and it seemed to have fixed the problem
It definitely is annoying, I agree. One thing that I've been doing is making sure the screen is on before I close the lid. At this point it has become second nature for me to do that when I stop using my tablet, and as such less annoying.
Still, a permanent fix would be nice.

the clock on my infinity doesnt update at all. i noticed it in class today that when i turn it on itll update in the menu but when im looking at the home screen the clock wont update in the corner... ive debloated this thing from what i know i dont need but for some reason would there be something i deleted that caused the clock to stop working properly? anyone have any ideas about this?

Tf700 Random Reboots. Anyone else or just me?

Has anyone had issues with random reboots with their TF700 or is it just me. I know the older Transformers had issues but I am experiencing that issue on my Prime Infinity and wondering if it is a software issue and if I should just wait for an update or if I should try returning it.
Try returning it... I only ran stock for a few days but i have never had a random reboot

I was getting them initially. Tried a factory reset and restored all of my apps with only minimal data and still got them.
Then did a factory reset again, started restoring apps one at a time only as needed from Google Play, no Tibu. I did this slowly, installing two or three at a time and then using the system for an hour or more to verify non-flakiness. Did not install an alternate launcher (had been using Apex). Avoided freemium games that do push notifications. No major problems since.
Did find at least one app that may be problematic: Google Voice seems unstable for me. There were couple of others too, IIRC, but that's the one that sticks out in my head because I use it fairly regularly. Did not reinstall a lot of stuff that I never actually used.
The process was painful but highly recommended. As the system becomes heavily loaded it tends have a lot of junk that is running all the time and taking up memory, etc, which is a real issue for ASUS' ICS firmware. This is why games are flaky on the TF and is probably the source of a lot of the seemingly random weirdness that seems to only affect some people but not others, IMHO, because it makes the system too sensitive to what you have installed/running on your box which is different for everyone.
This why a factory reset seems to magically fix everything, too, because all of that cruft gets wiped until you start reinstalling all this junk and firing off all the associated processes (which in turn start background services/process, etc).
I will still occasionally run FMR memory cleaner when the machine is acting laggy or something crashes (usually gmail, lol) and everything clears right up. My two previous TF201s and my other TF700 were ALL like this. I'm convinced it's an ASUS firmware/kernel issue. I'm hopeful JB fixes it but have learned to pay attention to what I put on the thing in the mean time and it is running better than ever.
rooted, btw.
I've had my Infinity for a little over a month and within the last week or so I've had random system crashes. Thought I figured out what app it was and it had stopped crashing but now it started in again late last night.wondering if its a hardware issue. Gut feeling is that I should go exchange it at Best Buy and just play it safe. I am rooted and also wondering if this could possibly be a reason as well.
What I have found is that the Infinity becomes very unstable when memory gets below 200mb. I am using the Cool Tool widget to show available RAM and noticed that it would frequently get below 200mb with general use. I have since set background processes limit to at most 2 and this keeps my RAM about 300mb and above. It limits multi taking a bit, but has been much more stable.

I had these random reboots at the beginning. Do you have a µSD card inserted in your TF700 (not the dock) ? I did and this was the cause of the reboots.

So what affect does that setting really have (limiting background processes to 4) - does that just mean that you can only *truly* multi-task 4 apps? I've always wondered exactly what that setting really did...

Yes I think so. 4 is actually that much of apps that this is quite a good compromise between stability and multitasking. And either way this doesn't have "true" multitasking as for example youtube videos stop playing when going to other screen. Which is actually very annoying and thats one of the reasons why this really can't be laptop replacement.

I had my first random reboot since the .30 update, so the issues has not been eliminated.
Man, I would be *livid* if my TF700 had random reboots! Part of the reason I bought the TF700 was because my old TF101 has had random reboot issues with ICS (if I NVFlash Honeycomb it's stable as a rock). I haven't had a single random reboot with my TF700 though - and believe me, I watch for it (mainly via uptime widget)...
Have you guys always had random reboots since you purchased it??

So if we're thinking memory allocation is the issue here, I wonder if the V6 Supercharge would help out. I use it on my phone and it's incredible. I installed half of it on my tf700 earlier today, but I have to wait till I'm at a real computer before I apply the rest of the changes.
As a disclaimer, I've not had these random reboots, neither before nor after the OTA, though sometimes games will refuse to load with that whole nvidia issue. Haven't seen that for a little bit though either.

yeap, sometimes a white horizontal line appears for a second o less in my tablet. I have to tell you that I don't have yet "the buttery" in it. Waiting to have time for a factory reset to improve the performance.
I saw other posts from the prime and the infinity as well, that after a while it gets worse, and a factory reset doesn't help at wall. I whant to resolve this without having to exchange it. I'm sick of having to go to the store and exchanging it. It's my 3rd Infinity.

I have not had what you described above happen to eithor the TF101 or TF201 I had prior to my current TF700T. My TF700T has not shown any of the issue you described after my upgrade to JB. It sounds like something you should take up with Asus right away since it could be a hardware issues and would be covered by your warranty.

Yes, it's a JB issue. I've only had it happens once, not seen it since.
It's just screen tearing. Happens on a pc, too, although there videocard drivers have Vsync options to forcefully match the refreshrate from the program to the screen to prevent screentearing. I suspect there's a difference between JB and the Transformer's refreshrate.
We're using an Nvidia card, has anyone send Nvidia a message? (I don't have the problem anymore, so I can't make a support ticket...) More likely to work than wait for Google or Asus to notice.
Also, I don't have root nor unlocked, but tp anyone who has, is there a way to change the refresh rate manually?
Should I do a factory reset after updating to JB? I noticed that it got faster, etc... But was wondering if it would still improve after a factory reset. If yes, how do I do a factory reset? And is there a way to have my infinity exactly the way it was (wallpapers, configurations, apps, etc.)?
So I shouldn't return my infinity? If it's a software problem... I'm sick of having to return this model.

I have also the same issue than OP. I contacted Asus by email to try and figure out what's wrong. I got the tablet on Monday and upgraded to JB right away, so I don't know if the problem was there before in ICS. But reading this thread I think that it's related to JB. It's a "good thing" though, because this is my second TF700 and I don't want to send it back, again. The first one had a very white spot in the middle of the screen..*. But no flickering black lines issue.
So, you guys think that they can fix this with the next release?

I'm really not sure then. Personally, I haven't had a singe reboot and/or SOD though, so it must be something specific to the setup for the folks that are having this problem. If you really want to figure it out, I'd suggest a factory reset and try running the tablet without installing all of your apps/tweaks at the same time.
How often does this happen? Can you try running a "bare-bones" setup and see if it still occurs? If not, then slowly start introducing your specific apps/tweaks one (or a few) at a time. Yes, it's a pain, but it's the only way to diagnose such issues... Have you tried looking at logcat outputs at all? That's another way to try and diagnose the problem. These types of issues are very hard to troubleshoot - it's a slow, tedious process. But, since most folks aren't seeing random reboots and or "sleep of death" issues, it is fixable (unless it's a hardware problem, of course).
So, here's a few questions that might help troubleshoot:
1. Has this always happened on your device or only since upgrading to Jelly Bean?
2. How often does it typically happen?
3. Have you tried installing Jelly Bean from scratch (not upgrading ICS)?
4. Are you installing your apps "fresh" or are you restoring them via Titanium backup (or some other backup app)?
Again, there is no quick, easy solution to this type of problem....

Anyone occasionaly unable to open quick settings menu by tapping clock?

Hey there,
Just curious if anyone else sees this problem? And if there's a known reason or fix? Pretty much like the topic name says.... sometimes tapping the clock just does nothing, no matter how deliberately I tap or hold it. I know it isn't hardware because when I rotate into the other other orientation, that portion of the screen that was just the clock now responds fine to touch. A reboot will fix. Thoughts?
EDIT: Should have mentioned - bone stock, unrooted, locked etc. Havent gotten up to any tinkering with this thing, too many bad hardware reports to invalidate warranty lol. Though my hardware seems good so far...
Thanks...

I prefer the ASUS quick setting to stock Android notification, but I don't think I have any problem with them. Have you try cold booting your tablet? Shut down and press power+volume down?
I know you said it's not hardware, yet that sounds like a digitizer problem.
I get this from time to time - I even got it once last night, after flashing CleanRom 2.3... which was a little disappointing.
I've found that if I get a notification of some kind - say, an email being received - it clears this bug and I can then tap on the clock to bring up the quick settings menu and it will work fine from then on. It's only after a reboot that the bug reappears, but then not every time.

Yes. I get the issue since I believe JB update. One work around that worked for me is open setting from setting icon, which I have on one of home menu. Some how after that it works again. So I agree it is definitely not related to hardware.
Hi,
Yes, this happens randomly with my tablet too. Likewise, only since JB.
As noted above a notification does seem to make the issue go away. I have tried all sorts to find the cause but always come up blank. Rebooting also removes the problem.

Yeah, notifications seem to fix it. Glad I'm not the only one... I guess. Really is annoying as hell to not have quick access to brightness settings and stuff. Funny, I didn't know the cold boot required the volume button trick, I thought just a normal shut down / restart did that. Thanks for the tip, I'll do it regularly lol.

Sorry all, but I don't have this issue on my rooted, locked .18 JB. It works very well indeed.
I also have this problem. The only way I can fixitisjust a shutdownand restart. Can be annoying.
Same here... Started after the JB update... One quick fix for me is to plug in my ear-buds and the QSP pops up.. If you don't want to carry around your ear-buds, if you have a pair that you don't use anymore or a damaged pair, you can cut the tip off and carry it around in your case/cover..
