The power button decided it doesn't want to work anymore. Since its been rooted, and I don't trust the shops in town, it's going back to HTC for repairs. They told me it will get wiped during the service (and I will do a factory reset before it leaves), what are the chances of it coming back locked with the factory ROM installed?
Any other things, besides the S3, I should watch for when it comes back? I'm not worried about losing LeeDroid, it's all backed up, and can be restored as soon as it comes home.
Well the power button is a part of the removable SIM cover so unless it's the button in turn being pressed by that that's causing your problem then it's a very easy repair... All bets are of as to whether they'll also RUU your phone for you.

The switch itself is on the phone. Only the physically pressable part is on the SIM cover.
I don't think you will get a s3 version back given the fact that you sent out s4 version and this repair should not be so difficult that they have to give you a replacement.
But, they will very likely factory reset your phone and put everything back to "out of box status". So you will have stock Rom, locked bootloader. I learned this from other threads where people saying it is part of HTC's repair process to flash everything to factory state no matter it's hardware or software repair.

So, when it comes back, it will probably be locked and untampered. It's bad that the guys at T-mobile were telling me to lose it, but I wanted to take the high road and do it right. A main board is $240, btw.

You can buy a new one locally for ~$350...Probably could sell the other sucker to some idiot desperate for a deal for $200 as well...
Did they give you any reason why exchanging the mobo is out of warranty? You should ask so if not.
I mean, you sent it in because of a defective power-on button...
They'll just say the reason why is because the HBOOT displays "unlocked".
Honestly if you want to get warranty coverage on an unlocked phone in Europe your best bet is to brick it to QHUSB_DLOAD mode and then send it in.

That was exactly the reason I got. Oh well, it's on it's way back, I can finally put the Nokia 7510 I have been using out of its misery (and mine), and have my One back. There is at least a thread now, in case someone else runs into this problem, they will know what to expect.
I took my tmobile one s back with me to taiwan and got the screen fixed there (HTC has repair/service centers there, it's kinda like an apple store without the products, all they do is help you with your phone)
Anyways, they called me and said, literally, "the mainboad is unstable and needs to be changed" (i sent it in for a cracked lcd) I declined and said just fix the screen....they ended up sending me a brand new/refurb device..

Okay, googled, and bing'd the crap out of this and it looks like so far everyone who's had this issue has had to send their phones in for repair, but before doing that I thought I'd ask here aswell to see if anyone has been able to solve this problem.
I've had my HTC Surround for about a month now and this morning when I went to use it I noticed I couldn't read my emails, it said something like "Oops we were not able to retrieve your email." I thought no problem I'll just restart my phone. I turned it off, and turned it back on. Ever since then the phone has been stuck on the white HTC start screen. I've pulled the battery four times and tried restarting it. I've restarted it holding the volume up and down buttons and I get a bootloader screen (no option to hard reset). I can plug it into my computer on the bootloader screen and the computer recognizes the device as an HTC SD card. (This is nice to know seeing as I can, if I ever get the phone working again, load files on the phone's SD card that Zune won't let me) however this is bad because Zune will not recognize the phone.
Sooo, anyone else had this problem and been able to fix it themselves? I don't want to have to send it to HTC because I have no warranty. I bought the phone used. Any thoughts would be appreciated!
And this is running 7004, I have no unlocked the phone or tampered with it in any way. (yet)
Have you looked in the development forum for your stock ROM and tried flashing it from the bootloader?
I couldn't find a rom to flash. Maybe I will just use this as an opportunity to switch to Sprint and buy an Arrive. That way I can be done with ATT's crappy service.
I'm on my third surround now, with both previous ones dead with the exact same situation you have described. I called ATT, had them replace them on warranty for free. I'm waiting for this third one to die so I can get a different model
P.S. I tried flashing the stock ROM, hard resetting, and everything else trying to get both phones back to life but I ended up just having to warranty them. Call up ATT and have them send you a new one.
Thanks, I was able to do a warranty claim. Technically I wasn't allowed to because I bought the phone outright (used) on craigslist. But since the person at ATT was lazy and didn't check when I went in the sent me to my local device support center and I was able to walk out with a new phone in 5 minutes.
Hope this doesn't keep occurring though. If they were to ever check how the phone was purchased I'd be screwed.

I had the same problem with my Surround a few months ago. Then I had another one that kept losing the data off the device. I'm on my third one now and it has been holding up for three months.
I also noticed in the store that all the display models of the phone were having the exact same issue.
I think they changed something up, as this new one seems to be hanging in there much better than the last two.

First I want a S-OFF and it works ok than I installed a the rom manager from the market and the app says i have no root acess ok so I thought it is too stubid for me and I thought it isn required for me to have a Custom Rom or root and so i want to set it to S-OF
ok I set a SuperCID no problem it has worked
after that i have used an Tutorial from a German forum...
yes and in the end of the tut were i should reboot the bootloader the Sensation bricked! Now I know my mistake i didn't haven't flashed the stock rom bevor!
so now the situation is like that:
the phone is dead no reaction and no backlight but only at one time it turned on the backlight as i put in the battery and than i pluged in the usb than the backlight turned off and i can't make the backlight on.... yet
when i plug in the usb the device is shown in the device-manager in windows..
I don't have any plan...I think it's that an it shut go to HTC-Support!

Mine is bricked too. Sending HTC with the hope that they can reflash everything and it will come back to life.
Return it you will probably get away with it htc will just ref lash and return to you,

I've tried a hard reset and also to come into the bootloader and the battery stays out over night! No chance
So you guys think I have a good chance to get it fixed for free?
I don't know but it's possible that I get a new device because here in Austria HTC has an service partner so they don't fix the devices by themself so I think HTC will change the device before they must pay the company to fix them! I really don't know I hope it will get fixed for free because it's 4 days old

Try, If you can, To Run the RUU. Because what you did semi-bricked your device. Not totally bricked. Just try to turn on IF you can and Run the RUU! This same thing happened to me when i tried to install a custom font!
I've tried it when i run the RUU.exe than it says Error 170 I think it's an connection error and i've tried it to reboot etc. etc. with "adb" but it always say "waiting for device"

With all due respect, people like you are the exact reason why we had an encrypted bootloader to begin with....to protect HTC from having to foot the bill for people who want to tinker with their phone, brick it, and then swap it for a new one as if the product was defective (leaving them to eat the cost). Quite frankly, this is ridiculous. It doesn't matter that your phone is 3 or 4 days old. If I buy a car and crash it within the first 3 or 4 days, should the dealership have to swap my car out? You knew the risks of what you were doing when you started the process (if you didn't then that's your fault for not reading), if you weren't willing to accept those risks then you shouldn't have done it. I hope you get your phone working, but if you aren't successful in fixing it, don't try to pass the buck off back to your dealer by lying about the phone coming out of the box dead. Take some responsibility for your actions. Remember it's dishonest actions like these that led to the locked bootloaders to begin with. Next time flash with care and make sure you read and understand what you're going to be doing BEFORE you start.

I agree completely. And, this also supports my thread that was removed. People dont need to be doing all this S-OFF and S-ON business for a measly bloatware removal project. If you dont intend to flash some ROMs and KNOW what you are doing in the process, you need to go the temp root method and spend time reading and understanding. That said, Id bet money that someone here can figure out how to fix this phone, so dont go talking about ripping off HTC when you should be waiting for someone here to help you fix the problem.

There is some sense in the comments about HTC/dealer footing the bill, it's not their fault.
However we all hate insurance companies, don't we? Like the ones who declined to pay for the houses of those poor people in the states who got hit by a hurricane or the ones who insure your car and then should something happen, they want some crazy excess and raise the insurance, never mind it was hit on a parking lot when you weren't even there.
This is very dishonest and you should not do it, however it came to my mind and I decided to share it.
You can fix your phone by getting a phone insurance, then wait for say a while until you can claim from it and then dump the phone in a) the sink, b) bucket with household bleach + hot water or c) a river, wait for an hour and it's ready

What does a device insurance company such as Asurion or SquareTrade have to do with the actions of some home/car insurance company? NONE. This is like saying, since someone in your family did something dishonest, I get to rob your house, because you're all relatives.
It's insurance fraud that causes all of us to pay those higher rates and have to endure so many hassles.
If it's wrong to send it to HTC claiming it came out the box broken, then it's wrong to commit insurance fraud too. This is not a case where the device had a hardware defect that had nothing to do with the bootloader being unlocked. So there's no gray area on this one.
I can't say I've been honest every day of my life, but let's not act like one form of fraud is more noble than another form of fraud.
Let's find a legit way to resolve this issue. And the legit way is, for the device owner to take it to a repair shop and be honest about what happend and pay for help, or send it to HTC and be honest about what happened and pay for service. Whatever fee will be less than the price paid for the Sensation by far I'm sure.
Im willing to bet that the fee to repair it from HTC will be less than the insurance + deductible from an insurance company.

Hello everyone!
So I recently had a problem with my Rooted Droid Incredible 2 running MIUI 1.12.9, I started up my phone and it displayed the splash screen for longer than usual and then it just "died". The screen went off so I tried pressing the power button to see if it would do anything, nothing. I tried holding down the power button to see if it would change anything, nothing. I resorted to doing a battery pull, nothing. Tried charging it with two different chargers, nothing. Connecting via USB, nothing. Taking out the battery, holding the power button for ten seconds, reconnecting the battery and holding the power button for ten seconds as many have suggested; still nothing. I browsed a few threads in multiple forums and decided and came to the conclusion that my phone, simply, needs to be replaced, as I read from a similar problem that someone had of mine.
The phone had been running fine with the same ROM for about a month and a half with no problems (I had also used this ROM multiple times before; I've had this phone since May of 2011.). It was fully charged the night before and then this morning I turned it on, only to see it "die" in front of me.
So I called Verizon Customer Support and they are sending me a new Inc2 and I have to send them back my current "dead" Inc2.
So my question is; What can Verizon do if they inspect my phone, somehow get it to boot and discover that I've rooted and installed a custom ROM, along with S-OFF?
The customer support rep also told me to remove the "card" before I ship my phone back to them, SIM card or SD Card?
you CAN s-on YOUR STOCK ROM BY INSTALLING THE RUU file (the correct one)
THIS would wipe of all YOUR data , on the phone so kindly back up all by any app like Titanium backup .
once u have S-ON , U CAN SHIP IT BACK TO VERSION AND RESOLVE YOUR PROBLEM .
THEN U CAN ROOT IT BACK
AND U NEED REMOVE THE SD CARD AND SEND THAT WHAT THEY WANTED TO SAY
Have you tried flashing another ROM? just to verify this is some kind of software problem.
Before you return your phone, flash it back to stock rom, and S-on.
The phones go back to HTC after VZW's warehouse. Thy will see that it had been unlocked and do a charge back of up to $499. Best bet would of been to step on the screen and file insurance.

First off, I did consider S-ON and RUU but seeing as I can't boot up my phone at all (unless there's some magical method of booting up a "dead" phone.) there's no way for me to do either of these.
My phone is not able to boot up. To my knowledge anyways, after I have tried the methods that I stated in my first post. If there is a method that I haven't listed, please let me know.
And I really hope you aren't serious boosterp. Further elaboration would be nice if you could do so. I would like to know how HTC could charge me $500 for doing something that they provide a service for to their customers, through HTCdev..
Edit: I cannot access my bootloader either.

All carriers have warranty contracts with the manufacturers. Just as short as a year or so ago they all have been doing "charge backs" for damaged phones returned because in turn the manufacturer charges the carrier. Rooting is specific and in all the contacts as voiding a warranty. So yes, you get to pay back retail value of the device if the warranty is anyway voided. As long as there is no physical damage and the phone will not go into HBOOT, then you are covered because HTC is only going to strip, rebuild, and/or reflash the phone and send it back to the carrier for warranty replacements. It is the same concept as if you sent the phone to the manufacturer under warranty for repair.

BTW, ask a Spint employee (have 2 ex-employees and one current who contracts for Sprint who have or is working for them) if there is one on this boar; Spint will often do an alternative replacement meaning replace one phone with a different kind. Sprint then looses money two ways, the initial cost of the equipment and some employee in a central location rebuilding or just putting that phone back into circulation.
ATT and VZW I know will sometimes do an alternative replacement because it makes "financial sense" meaning it is better than loosing you, better than sending the 24th replacement that shipping has already cost the same as the phone, or if the warranty replacement option is not in stock.
I have a nexus 5 rooted with stock rom and kernel and stock recovery+ xposed+GravityBox and some other xposed modules.
this happened sunday and again today.
I unlocked the screen and then the screen looked like that:
even on reboot the screen still was with the pixel snow
and after a few minutes of locking and unlocking repeatedly the screen turned OK again.
couldn't find a lot of information online.
does anyone knows why has this happened?
has someone experienced this kind of failure?

It's a hardware failure. Most probably the screen or the Flex cable went bad. It can only be solved by replacing it.
Definitely a hardware fault.... Had exactly the same screen on my n86 when the repair guyz told me that flex cable was damaged...

the problem is I bought the phone on ebay and had it sent to my uncle who was in the states for a business trip and then he brought it to me when he finished his trip.
I'm not from the US so I don't know who should I complain to :\

Totally depends on the device's IMEI. If the IMEI if not of the country you're residing in, warranty goes out of the window. In any case, you need to send it in to get it fixed whether it's under warranty or not.

Changing the flex cable won't cost alot...
If the screen is damaged (i hope its not) it will hurt...
So best is to get it done from local lg service center ..as u have no warranty by any means

So, I flashed my S8+ onto BatMan-Rom today with no apparent issues. Clean flash, booted with no problems. While restoring apps (not system data) with Titanium Backup, my phone's screen switched off and I couldn't get it back on. The phone got really hot but would not reset with holding power+vol+bixby or any other button combination. Tried plugging into my PC, ADB didn't detect the phone. Desperate, I disassembled the phone far enough to disconnect the battery from the mainboard and then reconnect it, hoping that would force some kind of reset. Instead, I went from a hot phone I couldn't do anything with to a cold one. No button combo gets me anything - no recovery, no odin mode, nothing. Am I as screwed as I think I am? It seems to me I'm out $900 on a paperweight, and I can't even figure out what went wrong since I wasn't messing with anything at the system level when this happened.

Can't you just contact the retailer and sort of, ahem, forget to tell them that you rooted it and took it apart and that it just, well, simply broke?
Surely there's some kinda warranty?
Or claim on home contents insurance?

You're proposing fraud, which is a form of theft. And ultimately, it's all the other customers who subsidize such acts.
What we customers are subsidizing is Samsung's greedy bull**** of producing different versions of a product specifically so they can get away with not offering warranty coverage for unlocked/rooted devices in North America. If there were a way for me to game the system to force them (or a retailer) to replace my phone, believe me, I would, especially since this happened when I was restoring apps and not in the course of flashing a rom or otherwise messing with anything at the system level; it does feel like a defect in the device to me at this point.
That's all academic though, since I'm outside the retailer's return window and there's not going to be anything accomplished through that angle. Worst case scenario at this point is selling the device for parts and going back to my Nexus 6P with all its battery issues until I can get my hands on a phone made by a company that doesn't pull this "no warranty for power users" crap - an Essential Phone or a Pixel 2 XL, I guess. But I would of course prefer to find a way to fix my S8+. At the moment I think the first problem is that it's not charging - battery doesn't even get warmer than room temperature after being plugged in for hours. I'm going to try a wireless charger tonight and see if the charger lights up saying it's connected to the device, but I'm not holding out much hope.
I've read that previous Galaxy devices could be reflashed to stock with special USB devices that repair shops had access to...do we know if there's anything like that with the S8?
"Power users" amount to nothing now with all the millions sold and billions made. They make more locking down there stuff. Doing the stuff we do now is considered a security risk.

just sent it to change/repair using ur garant...it seems a phisical problem more than firmware/software issue...if not go to a repair service so they can check wich piece is making the problem.
Theres a posibility is the mainboard so dont waste more time asking here and go to a repair center in or out of warranty.
