I did my first root less than a month ago, so I'm super new to this too. I used Advanced Ace Hack Kit; it has since been taken off of XDA Forums, but Google it and it should be pretty easily found. After that, just try the different ROMs on XDA. Remember to do a nandroid (a full backup) before you wipe and flash a new ROM, and maybe even back up your apps so you can restore them (which can be problematic).
I strongly recommend spending some time researching different ROMs and how to do different things yourself; that seems to be the XDA way. The information's all here already. There's also just so many options: GB, ICS, and JB; AOSP, CM, and AOKP. I doubt anyone's going to give you extensively detailed information here when it's already available with a little Googling and searching.
With that said, welcome. I've found XDA a great resource in the short time I've been here.

Agreed, I strongly recommend titanium back up for your apps and data. Also rom manager for a full back

I prefer Goomanager for flashing and full backup and Go Backup for apps and data backup...but that's just me.

Safe backup is also a nice lil app for doing your backups... pretty easy to use and allows you to backup to your dropbox as well...

MIUI not working in Rome manager.

I'm guessing that I'm not the only one with this problem, given the low number of downloads, but in the Download ROM section, there is a heading for MIUI, but when I select it, I just get a blank screen. I'd like to check it out, since it's such an easy way to flash.

They haven't posted there stuff yet. Wait and it will get updated.

Is that the Ceaser edition ?
Just go to the thread and download it from there (on your phone), then flash through cwm, or rom manager if you wish.
I think he's referring to the miui.us builds.
There probably still getting it setup since the section is empty.

I don't understand why some people insist using rom manager to flash roms. All it takes is a quick scan of the first few pages of the general topic to see numerous amounts of posts regarding issues flashing with rom manger. I don't ever recall seeing issues from flashing through cm recovery that wasn't user error. Why not take the path of least resistance? I guess some people like to skate uphill.

Well i use rom manager to download certain roms but not to flash them using rom manager. And i would do the same with the miui.us builds in rom manager.
And in this instance the miui.us builds (which are different from the one in the developer section) aren't listed yet, which is why the OP saw a blank screen after choosing the miui.us section. just a place holder for now you could say

Use Czechoslovakia manager instead

I don't understand why anyone does anything, since no matter what you do, someone will tell you it's wrong.
I don't use ROM Manager to install new ROMs, the data wipes and whatnot never work, but it's a pretty convenient way to install updates. It was just something I noticed wasn't working correctly and wanted to see if anyone else was having the same problem.

Market Missing After Restore

I was playing with a ROM and decided that it wasn't for me so restored a back up I had made a couple of hours earlier and Android Market is now missing.
I have tried restoring it and a couple of previous back ups but still no Market.
Found a couple of APK's for the Market and while the phone claims to have installed them, I have the icon, the app won't launch.
Any ideas before I return to stock and start over ?
What rom were you using?

Went from Cyanogen to Gingerbeast and back again.
Curious as trying new ROM's isn't exactly a new thing for me or this device.
Best bet would be do a full wipe and then a clean install of either ginger or cm7

That is what I was thinking but just wanted to make certain I wasn't missing a trick.
Thanking you muchly
All you have to do is flash the Google Apps addon. It will install the market app.
Knew I would find a better way.
Many thanks !

[Q] Flashing multiple roms.

Being that the Skyrocket is my first android-based phone, i'm still fairly new to this. Currently, I have NexusMod4 running on my phone. Say I wanted to flash a different rom or even the ICS leak etc.. what would be the best way to do this? Do I just go ahead and flash it or do I have to uninstall the current or anything like that? Also, what should be backed up? Everything? Lol. Apps can be backed up and restored via Titanium Backup, correct? Help a noob out.
hi there, can you just advise on this: when you flash a ROM do you lose all of your phones UI ( TW on Samsung phones for example).
thanks in advance

ok guys
One. Search is your friend it would have answered your questions so please in the future try to do so
Two. When installing a new rom its like installing a different version of windows so when you do your wipes its like formatting a hard drive so yes you loose all of the old data including whatever ui was on the old rom.
Three. Backups are important many make a full one of the stock setup and archive it somewhere safe for those oh **** moments lol and many like to flip between roms by backing up their favs and restoring them as their fancy is stricken.
Four. Yes tibu is good for backing up apps me personally I use system tuner pro for this purpose among many others. Hope this helps out

Another root question from yet another noob

Ive searched and read and searched some more. Learned a lot about how to root and the best methods. But what I cant find is the answer to my specific question. I have a new Galaxy S2 skyrocket on at&t running the latest 2.3.6. If I were to root it using the guide on this site, will I lose all my contacts, pica, apps, and settings? Contacts and pics I'm not so worried about because I can back them up to my Pc. But since this is my first android phone (after 4yrs of iphones), it took me about 2 weeks of messing with the settings and notifications and sms apps and so on to get it just how I like it. I'm affraid if I wipe all that by rooting it then ill never be able get it back. Most of the stuff I just figured out by tinkering and trying new stuff till I got what I liked.
Anyway, if anyone can answer that question or point me in the right direction to a rooting process that wont cause me to lose all my stuff, id greatly appreciate it.

There is a sticky at the top of the general forums section that will explain it all. How to root 2.3.6 and all that. And no you will not lose data. Is there a particular reason why you wish to root?
This should be for 2.3.6. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340526

Just wanted to remove (or freeze) some of the bloatware. And maybe down the road as I get more comfortable with all this I may try custom roms and things like that. I can jailbreak an Iphone with my eyes closed and had mine customized every which way. This android stuff is awesome but very complicated compared to ios.
I did read the sticky but didn't see anywhere that it answered my specific question about losing settings and such. Today is the first time I've had access to a pc all week and was doing all the searching\reading on my phone. If its in there I must have over looked it.
What baseband are you on? You can find this under settings>about phone. Once you are rooted, titanium backup ( which you find in Play Store) will be your best friend for app back up and restore. It would also be advisable to also flash a version Clockwork mod recovery and make up a backup to restore just in case you soft brick for whatever reason.

I just did this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340526
Actually very easy. Went smooth and I'm now rooted with superuser installed. Now I just need to learn what steps to do next to get the most out of this beast.
Baseband is I727UCLA3 by the way. If you've got any more tips I'll take all the info I can get
Next time search before posting please. Make it a habit.

Actually, as stated in my original post, I did search. I couldn't find the answer to my specific question about losing data and settings and having to start from scratch. Occupational_Hazzard was kind enough to give me the info thati needed. Then I felt comfortable proceeding with the root process.
If I violated the agreement in some way by asking a question on a forum because I wasn't able to find the answer, then by all means delete my account.
And to Occupational_Hazzard, thank you very much for helping out someone who is trying to learn by replying with useful information. Greatly appreciated

Now that you are rooted, I would highly recommend flashing the ClockWorkMod Recovery so you can possibly flash a custom rom in the future, which are usually rooted from the get-go. You need to make a back-up so you can restore to a previous date just in case you accidentally goof something. BTW congrats on the first root of a droid and I am glad to help you.
Did that and installed titanium backup. Was actually scared to death to try it but so far so good! Now I gotta just figure out how all this stuff works one step at a time
Thanks again!

Maybe someone else can chime in, but I usually just backup the user installed apps and data, wifi access points, and so forth. Also you can set the filter to at the top of list things to backup/restore.
Ill work on it some later tonight. By son just woke up from his nap and he doesn't allow for much phone tinkering time at only 15 months old.

For future reference turn google sync on for contacts and that's done... And there is an app called sms backup for sms... What else did you need that titanium doesn't get?
CM9 Skyrocket
Titanium pretty much covers it. I was just worried id lose everything in the rooting process before I was able to use titanium. Its all under control now. Didn't lose a thing and its all backed up

Help with root and ROM

Ok guys so I hate this phone, I've never wanted to punt a phone up until now, It freezes, crashes, and is extremely annoying but I thought hey maybe if I root it and install a custom rom it make my experience with this phone much better since that's how it went with my G2.
So here is my question, rooting, I found this pretty neat one click roo for this phone, do you guys suggest it? Or is there a better way of doing it?
Second question, I've seen a rom for this phone called RAGE and that's it would you guys be able to suggest a great rom for this phone?
I've only ever rooted the G2 and used CM rom, so ima little new to the rootng world.
Thank you guys so much in advace!!

Hey look, there's a search box up there!
You should search before starting a new topic.
There are tons of guides on :how to root/install a custom rom
This is one of them
RAGE is a pretty nice rom , but you need to install a file manager and input method using titanium backup ,as they are not included.
So it's easier to install Glorious Overdose v3 it's fast and stable.

SuperOneClick is really easy to use, so even first timers can do it pretty easy. I myself use RAGE (Now on 4.0) and love it. User friendly, Swype is back, you don't need to manually input the APN, and it runs a lot smoother tha 3.6 was. Just make sure you get your mounts and update your Voodoo before hand.
I do, however, recommend getting Titanium backup pro before so that you don't have to go through and redownload all of your apps. It also backs up your messages, and make sure your contacts are saved by either Google, TMobile, or both just in case.
Hope this helps! =]
