Broken Glass, What to do? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

So I dropped my phone on some grass this weekend, broke the glass and now I'm not sure what to do.
A) Should I get it repaired? What would that cost?
B) Sell it as it? What is a fair price to ask for it?
C) Try to work with AT&T to get it replaced. I know, I might have some pull as I used to work there and the phone is for a very large business account.
Any advice would be awesome, thanks.

A) You can get it repaired or repair your self by replacing lcd/digitizer (100$) .
You can refer this thread for repairing cost and where you should get it repaired.
There is a guy who replaced the screen by his own, you can PM him to know more details. Link to this thread regarding lcd/digitizer replacement.
B) Ya you can sell it as it is . But I do not know for what cost - Wait for other members to reply regarding the cost
C) Before trying to get it repaired or sell , try your sources at att to see if they could provide you new device.

You dropped it on grass and it broke? Meanwhile people are using it as a hammer...I would call AT&T and complain you got a faulty one and maybe get it replaced. (ya never know)

Thank you both.
Yeah, I thought it was crazy too. It landed on a patch of grass around a bunch of dirt and rocks. I was thinking, I'm so lucky it landed on this 1 spot of tall grass. But I wasnt lucky. I'll try AT&T and see what they can do for me.
But please keep posting, as AT&T is well within their rights to tell me to go pound sand.

Do you have insurance? You can get a replacement for like 100$ if so

To replace it through insurance is 200 bucks.

The at&t insurance deductible is 200$? Damn. I guess it's still better than 650$

I have insurance with Ensquared. 99 bucks for 2 years 75 deductible. B

I have att insurance... $10 bux a month, $200 deductible. Get raped from them no matter what.

Wait, grass > one X? That's some hard ass grass. But in all seriousness if you have or even think you have some pull at at&t I'd try that first...mainly because I'm cheap. You never know, you might get lucky. Plan b for me would be to just send it in unless you're confident in your tinkering skills. By replacing the screen on your own you run the risk of borking your phone completely then you're really sol.

It's also a pain to move the coverage from one device to another.

Insurance is just a pain in the ass altogether. Unfortunately, when you don't get it, then you need it. I was impressed, however, when I replaced my HOX because they had a brand new HOX at my door in less than 24 hours. Too bad for them I'm taking it back today to get another so I can root and unlock. CLEANROM, Here I come!

I believe I've read that HTC will replace the screen for 200 bucks. A 200 deductible for insurance is just a plain rip off. Verizons maximum deductible is 99 which is much more reasonable considering your paying for it even if you don't use it.

Should I?

Hi all nexus user, my cousin has a nexus s but he dropped it on concrete and the screen is cracked. The phone still works, but the screen is completely dead. The lights on the bottom turn on when I turn the phone on, but the screen stays black. He offered it to me for 100$ and I'm wondering if this is fixable? Just a new digitizer right? Also I'm on att and the nexus s only supports Edge for att since its the T-Mobile variant? do you think it's a good deal?
Thanks

Agrees wholly with mixtapes08. The cost for repair makes all the difference.
For reference, doesn't the Infuse 4G cost $100 on a 2year contract on AT&T? No need to repair at all, if you're willing to go on contract.

You're missing the point. The guy wants to know if the screen is easily repairable because he has a chance to score a Nexus S for ~$100 plus repair costs.
Unfortunately I don't know the answer, I have never repaired my screen.

Yeah, I can see that. And by the sounds of it, he wants to use the phone on his AT*T network. So why not just purchase a new phone which is basically equivalent for the same cost without having to spend more to repair it?
Just offering alternative ideas, yo. Of course, if the OP wants specifically the Nexus S, then that's also cool.

Yea its more if I get it without a plan, my next upgrade isn't til January, so still a while from now
Update: now his friend is offering a fully working nexus s for 120$. I think ima go for it
it will cost a good penny anywhere from $90 to $180, I know becuase mine is cracked. The screen and the digitalizer are fused together so you'll have to replace both. the screen is 75.99 on Amazon and u need the double sided tape as well which is like 9.99 on amazon. I called samsung they quoted me like 120 to 200.

Disappointed with HTC QC

My first htc one x was white and had light bleed. I just got it exchanged for a black one. It is flawless...or at least I thought. It has dust under the screen and its annoying. My local att store is stubborn and the guys there are mean. I bought this phone off-contract so I can't live with these defects. What should I say to the guys at the ATT store?
Also, I am very disappointed with HTC quality check system at this point

If you bought it new off contract at AT&T you have 30 days just like anyone else, mean or not mean. Try a different AT&T store. They all take exchanges.
I had the same issue with my grey one x. That ISN'T dust those are dead pixels my friend! I swapped mine out after downloading a pixel checker app and showed the employee and he swapped it out and not restocking fee. Don't settle especially since you paid full price. Go get your money's worth.

No restock fee for defective units.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
I had to pay a restocking fee to get a grey one. Well actually I wanted another white one but they are out of stock everywhere. And the said because of the customs thing they didn't know when they were getting more in. But because it was a different color they said it was like getting a whole different phone even though that's all they had left. They did offer to credit me on my bill though for the fee. I asked if I could have the zagg shield instead and they were cool and said ok.
It still makes me wonder though why they would charge a restocking fee for a defective unit. It wasn't my fault they only had grey left.

Because technically its a different phone because of the color. They did right by crediting you the restocking fee though.

Well guys just thought id update you all. I just took my phone in for exchange because of the dead pixel. The new one looks great so far....lets hope I don't suddenly notice a dead pixel lol
Same happened to me, bought off contract white one x and exchanged for the grey due to light leak. Except i had to pay the restocking with no credit back or anything. This new one is great though so im happy.
Can we get away off restocking fee if we complain about no multitasking?
I can't even use my data logging app, as it's being closed all the time...I call it a defect...
Oh and they say it has 16gb, while we only get 10gb - that's a lie (btw, the store I bought it from (BestBuy) had a note regarding different phones, and for the HTC One X it was saying that it has 16gb expandable to 32gb)
Don't fret, simply take it back and exchange it. If there's a clear manufacturers defect the last thing on my mind is to worry about it. I think "sweet, I have irrefutable evidence to support an exchange".
That being said though, I've never had any issues with any Android handsets I've purchased. I always read about screens with light bleeding, dust under the screens, misaligned cases, etc. Never, ever had a problem and I'm hyper critical.
Return it, get your money back, and patronize a store that treats you properly.

Yeah and unless traffic to/from that dropbox doesn't count as data usage, I wouldn't consider it as free or expandable, but more like a LIE, especially if one doesn't have unlimited data.
Login on the PC to your dropbox account, then complete the star-up guide thing to access all your data space. I was confused about it before as well. And yea it does cost data to transfer so not all that useful. Luckily I don't really need 26GB of data out of my 32 GB available. But this phone is amazing anyway! Friends are very jealous!

I bought the international version from Amazon and have returned it once for pixels. I can share some info that I got about the next shipment of one x s4's. It will be late summer before we see these phones again. The manufacturing of the galaxy and iphone have looked up suppliers and assembly plants in China.
Ps. Love the display but the performance and storage are disappointing at best.

Dropped phone and cracked glass. Options

I dropped my phone yesterday and cracked the glass. It's still functioning but very annoying to use and I'm sure next drop will finish it.
What are my options?
I've called Rogers (our carrier in Canada) they want $345 to fix it and I've called independent shops. They want anywhere from $205 to $245 to fix it (I'm assuming these would be aftermarket components).
What if I buy the components from ebay and do it myself. Is it doable?

I have just recently replaced my screen and was in the same boat as you. The part itself is around the $200 range where-ever you look. Yes, they are expensive screens.
Depending on your skill level, I found it fairly easy to replace myself but there are some repair shops all over that charge minimally for the actual repair; myself, here in my part of the Country (by Calgary), I charge $40 for the repair.
Don't know if that helped you or not but the site I got my screen from is cellphonepartscanada, just have to google it.
about $150 to do it yourself.

Brand new black Asurion replacement!

Forgot to post this last week...
My original pebble blue S3 went "missing" (don't ask- alcohol, strip club, parking lot brawl = no more phone).
Got a replacement through Asurion which ended up being a brand spanking new in the box black version, not a refurbished one. I tried to convince the operator at Asurion to give me an S4, but she wasn't having it! Thought I'd share the info for whatever purpose it may serve

Not sure what's sexy about shelling out $100 plus $120/year for a phone you got for $49 originally. I dropped Asurion after the three replacements they sent failed within days or never worked at all. Clearly what they send out are usually returned items from Verizon's stores. Verizon gave me a $100 credit and a new phone after I complained to a tier 2 supervisor.
Paying monthly plus a deductible just never made sense to me. Better to get a good case and if it does break either wait it out to buy it for your next contract or Craig's list it. You'd get a better deal.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Never bothered with those sort of plans. Last winter I slipped on ice and fell on my S3. Fortunately, I had a good solid case and the xGear tempered glass protector. Bottom line, phone suffered NO damage. XGear protector did it's job sacrificing itself which I was more than happy to replace with another.
I'm also told some Homeowner's policies can cover electronics such as phones.

Because if you ever have any defects past the 14 day period you get the extended warranty on your phone = 2 years instead of 1. Also you get FREE overnight shipping which is $15 for them to ship the warranty replacement to you. Otherwise they give you free crappy media mail which takes like 3-5 days for you to get your replacement phone.

I've used them for my Nexus 7 and they were pretty fast in resolving the claim. Their price on smartphones seems kinda high including the deductible (it's half the cost of a new 32GB Nexus) so I passed on it.

That price is absurd ($125 for two years with $99 deductible). Most repairs cost less than the plan + deductible. Assuming the most common claim is a cracked screen this plan is a ripoff. Squaretrade used to be a good deal.

Not trying to sound like a **** but how about being extra careful? I've had a smartphone for years and I have never broken one.
If you have either homeowners insurance or renters insurance, ask your company if they cover phones as an "additional insured" item. Mine does, and covers the full amount of the phone with no deductible for $7 per YEAR. I've only had to use it once in the past, but it's great for those who are careful with their phones but just want that extra security. HTH.
