I've been having reception issues for almost two months, and i've ruled out software and SIM issues, which leads me to believe it's a hardware issue. Wi-Fi works with no problem, so i suspect it's the GSM/3G antenna that is failing. However, i have no way of knowing where it is. I know there are antennas on the two plastic pieces in the back, and i know that removing the top cover (where the microSIM is) kills Wi-Fi. anyone know where the GSM/3G antennas are?

Others may disagree, but every phone I've ever owned had the 3g antenna in the bottom for regulatory emissions reasons.
Its at the bottom, guess the antenna actually IS the removable cover. Images and some FCC stuff here: http://www.anandtech.com/show/5868/htc-one-s-review-international-and-tmobile/7
There is an anntena on the bottom cover

Hey, i'm also having this issue, for almost two months now.
Do you have any news, were you able to fix it?

I'm waiting for the tools i bought from Dealextreme to arrive. Once those show up i'll have more news
Well, i got the dools, opened the bottom panel and everything looked to be in order... pins were there, i bent the outwards a bit to make sure they were touching the antennas, but the problem persists

I'm not comfortable with it too. I'm pretty sure our problem are related somehow, might even be the same.
Because I live in Brazil, its impossible for me to get official support for the One S here, since the phone wasn't released in Brazil.
If you get any news please let me know, ill look into it too, and if I found something I willl let you know.
i live in chile, so i don't have official support either. I'll make sure to let you know if i can fix it.

I was reading some of your posts about this issue, and i saw that you dropped your phone from knee high.
Well, that happened to me aswell, the same day i dropped the phone from my table i started having issues with the antenna.
Knowing this, i can say for sure that this is a hardware issue, and not software related.
I also saw this video on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0jGY2N2h1U
On the comments there's a guy saying that he fixed his antenna issues by using this tutorial.
I'm trying to contact him, to check what the issue was, and how he resolved it.
I'll post here if i find anything new.

Just so you know, i took the phone to a repair center (not HTC specific, but seemed pretty good) and they told me it's a problem with the PCB or chips, since the phone wouldn't pick up a signal even with an external antenna
Related
I was wondering seen as how we have an external antenna couldn't you build something that attaches to it and improves phone signal or make a cantenna? Any suggestions on how to do this?
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using Tapatalk
I don't know how much help this will be but I love the DIY spirit so here are some of my ideas.
Connecting to the existing antenna array could be achieved by attaching wires into the existing contact points in the back plates, then route through the camera lens opening out of the phone. The wires will have to be thin so that is something to consider. i.e. more fragile at longer lengths.
The new antennas could be based existing off the shelf parts or from existing DIY projects for each respective technology, but AFAIK you cannot use a single cantenna type device. Due to the different frequencies used for WiFi/Bluetooth vs. GSM vs HSPA+. I am unsure about how many you will need as a minimum or if there are special power requirements between the different technologies involved here.
Power will have to be another consideration. Not 100% certain, but I believe to get these "super" antennas to be truly super, you will need to increase the power to them. This will of course lessen battery life. So that would be another consideration. This mod might spawn a separate battery mod/swap.
I am not sure if this is cost effective or not, but DIY doesn't always consider cost. Of course if you are planning on using this to power some autonomous super killer robot, that can record in 1080P, and stream back live VGA video using the hardware built into the phone this could work out pretty well.
What if you somehow took gold wiring like on the connectors, attached it to the connectors and ran it along the inside of the back cover?

I think the one above the camera hole is for wifi because I saw a youtube video of a guy that took some tin foil and stuck it in the hole on the phone where that connector would make contact and it gave him a really strong wifi signal. He took out the foil and the signal dropped. So I'm thinking that the connector on the top is wifi. The strange thing is I also have an unbranded euro/asian sensation and it has one less connector than the TMO us one (but uses the same mobile bands/radios) and when I use that cover on my US sensation there is no signal difference. So I really wonder what that extra one is for, since I have noticed no signal difference when using one over the other on the US phone.
Hey guys Ive been giving this some serious thought and here are a couple of my ideas on this....I am looking for some serious Beta testers for my ideas, there is no money compensation for testing just fame and prestige......PM me if your intrested in beta testing for me..hurry I have a feeling a lot of people are gonna want in and space is limited.

Maybe T-Mobile uses AWS bands for HSPA+? I'm not sure if that's even possible, but I don't know much about that stuff.
Anyway, I believe the antennas are:
Above the camera: Wi-fi
Below the camera: BT? (correct me if I'm wrong)
On the bottom cover: Mobile network
And @joemm Lmao!

No, My Asian sensation has the same bands as my tmo sensation. It has the AWS band and gets the same download speeds as my TMO version. If it wasnt the same bands I wouldnt even get 3g, I would be stuck on edge. Tmo's 3g and 4g(HSPA+) run on the same frequencies. So if you have a phone that doesnt have the AWS band and the phone supports 3g and 4g you will only get 2g speeds. I believe All the the sensations first released had the AWS bands. I think only now are they starting to release versions with different bands. I know a while back a sensation passed through the fcc with att bands. Maybe those are the ones we are seeing popping up on Bell now?

Hmm, not sure how good this idea would be, but it's worth a shot
I'm thinking as the antenna has to be of a specific length to work, this length is determined by the frequenzy of the signal
Here is some examples : http://www.air-stream.org.au/wavelength

I have a new back cover coming and I might due some experimenting with the old one.
ive stuck tin foil in the back of it touching th ebottom two connecters and ive never suffered from death grip since , going on 2 weeks now :0
It should be possible if we could get a flexi pcb that we stick inside over the exisining connections and route outside and fold around that sticks down. I dont think we need more power, just a increased area. Should be easy to do.

I love my Touch Pro, and as having been having it for over 4 years, I would like to continue using it in U.S as I've just moved here. That's the reason for this thread.
I've been researching for a while and understand that the Fuze has similar parts comparing to the Touch Pro (except for the screen and mainboard as it lacks front-facing camera). So I want to know, is it possible to put the antenna of the Fuze to replace into my Touch Pro.
Any one who has any experience or any idea, even knowing any person who has experience on disassemble or replacing Touch Pro parts, please help me.
Thank you.

thank you for such quick reply r^7z.
in fact, i do have the service manual for a while since my researches, and i've been reading it over and over. but i do not have tried to take the risk yet. as it does not says the specific part of the Fuze, just the Touch Pro parts in general. further more, i gotta know if it is possible, so i could go on ebay and purchase a broken fuze for parts, and also the tools kit. total will worth 50$ at least.
as i don't have any experience in this. i would love if someone could point the way out for me.
anyway, appreciate the help.

I think, you can look at http://www.mikechannon.net/page1.html
Additionally, try THIS link out. This link will take you to a translated frame-by-frame snapshot of dismantling the TouchPro/Raph. More specifically, take a look at steps #8 and #9
It looks like it can be done but be aware that if your device is still under warranty, doing this may void it.
it seems (through pictures) that the antenna is a part of the motherboard or some part of it (a big part). so if i replace it, i would have to replace to motherboard too.
also, normally if it is a individual part, there would be some replacements for it, but i am unable to find any on the web.
if it is a part of the motherboard then i'll guess this will fail. because the motherboard of the fuze and touch pro are different.
can anyone confirm this ? just tell me that's the antenna is a seperate part i'll be good on my way to do it then.
thank you.
So I decided to confirm whether the antenna was a part of the motherboard and the conclusion is no it is not. If needed (post and ask), I can provide pictures from my bricked at&t Fuze. :highfive:

yes sir, can you just point out to me which is the antenna in the fuze ? (if you can do it without disassembly, otherwise i don't want to cost you your time to take it apart)
i want to press the thank button a million times more (if of course it appears a million times)
you are officially my savoir. have been stuck with my iPhone since i set my foot here.
and one more wonderful is, the antenna of the Fuze supports 850, 900, 1900, 2100. it means that it works both here in the U.S (850 with AT&T) and back in my country (Vietnam 2100 - if i ever go back home)
thank you, thank you sir. you just made my day.

n-Joie!
isn't it just the antenna flex cable itself ? not a chip ?
i thought the antenna suppose to be a chip or something similar.
if it is a cable, how it makes the difference in frequency ?
sorry for my ignorance and please correct me if i'm wrong.
I'm going by what it says from the snapshots. It could be just a cable but unless you know for a fact, we are left with only what we can verify. Sorry but that is all "I" currently have. You can try it out and see if it works or wait and see if someone else chimes in.

So it seems some of the metal contacts broke off in my headphone jack and I need to replace it. It seems like a pretty straightforward fix but I don't know if the replacement part requires a Verizon-specific model or not.

Both of these websites say that it is compatible with the i535 but I'm not 100% convinced.
http://www.globaldirectparts.com/product-p/smsng6115835-9qs.htm
http://www.durapowerglobal.com/Sams...placement-Includes-Headphone-Jack_p_5868.html
Looking at mine, there appear to be some traces or something near the corners, which I imagine are antenna-related, and I don't see these in any of the pictures of the replacement part.
Does anyone have any insight here? Perhaps anyone who's done it and can confirm that its a universal part?
Thanks
I just saw a dissasembly video on youtube that identified the antennas on this part. The one near the flash LED is the GPS antenna and the one near the speaker is the GPS antenna. Since these are the same on all SGSIII models, I'm more convinced that this part should be Verizon-compatible. I also was able to make them out on a few pictures, not sure why I missed it before.
I was going to delete the question altogether, since I'm pretty confident now, but figured I'd leave it up for any future googlers down the line...

I did this repair myself (different break though, mine just quit working).
Can't remember the link I used, but the speaker/headphone module seems to be universal. The part I used listed it for the several models, but not i535 but worked fine.
Think I got it on eBay with a Buy-it-now for $7 plus shipping.
Really easy repair too, just be careful popping out the module connections.

That's really encouraging, my friend. Glad it's gone over so well for you since replacement. Quick question, did you purchase an opening tool to separate the headphone jack component from the phone? Just curious what you used to separate it.

I did use some plastic tools, but I don't think it was entirely neccessary, made popping the module connections easier though.

Just got my replacement headphone jack from ebay, switched it out with my S3, and I can listen to audio in both ears again! It's been about two months since I could do this and it only took a few minutes to get set up.
I open this thread because quite a lot of hdc legend s4 users suffer from a very anoying noise when calling.
As far as I have red there is no fix. But I would like to share all the information anyway.
I have tried to unscrew the screws at the bottom back. I red it somewhere but it doesn't work. And I have also tried the boost signal widget but it doesn't fix it neither.
Any suggestion?
I would also like to know a fix for this. I tried to change sound settings from Mobile Uncle Tools, but no success.
the solution for this problem is to disable one of two antennas are not used inside the phone. Disassembling the body, the scheme should provide three pins, the first non-welded (the GND), the second corresponds to antenna in use, and the third not used corresponds to a second antenna for a secondary sim not used in this phone. To solve this problem it is necessary to isolate the last rightmost pin of the antenna to turn off the antenna that creates the noise. Tried and tried many of galaxy s4 legend and always works!
For isolate it just use a piece of isolant. :good::good:
Sorry for my bad english....

Thanks a million!!! I thought theren is no solution for this problem. Actually I thought this problem comes from pour gsm cover.
Before isolating I would like to ask you about the pin you talk about. Could you point it in this picture? I think this picture (from [GUIDE]HDC Galaxy S4 Legend Disassembly + Antenna Modifications! threat) could help us to learn where you mean we have to isolate.

you can try to isolate the other pin...maybe your phone uses the other antenna...maybe try also to bend and lift the pins to improve contact with the antenna...

Uf, I am afraid to bend the pins and break them. They look too rigid. But yes, the problem seems to be a bad contact. I'm thinking about two solutions. One could be to unpaste the antena and paste something above in order to elevate it and get full contact with the pins. The other option could be to paste a small piece of copper foil in the antena to ensure the contact with the pin.
Not sure wich one is better....
Stupid me!! The cable besides the anntena pins was not conected. It got out somehow... No problem now.

What do you use for isolate it?? a plastic? or straightly remove it?

the solution for this problem is to disable one of two antennas are not used inside the phone.

Attached is a picture of the motherboard.
I have made a circle on one part of it. As you can see, there is a blue thing to the right - before, there were 2 blue things next to eachother. But the left blue thing is now gone, I don't know where... But seems like it has fallen out somehow...
Is it possible to solder this together? Or do I need the blue thing there?
When trying to use the motherboard, everything works very well - EXCEPT the touch screen, I cannot do anything because the screen doesn't feel my fingers (nowhere on the screen). And no, I have no clue if this is the reason for the touch screen not to work, but that's my guess as it worked good before.
Any help would be much appreciated, I don't have much knowledge about soldering and so on, as you might already have understood from my description above...

I would highly suggest that you do not try soldering if you don't have any previous knowledge or experience. As for if the "blue thing" is needed or not I am unsure because I myself know little about what each piece does on the board. But as far as the touch screen issues goes, if the touch screen worked before the blue piece came of, it most likely has to do with it. If it didn't (or even if it did work before), try finding a second device that is the same as yours (or if its cheap and you can afford it order a new lcd/digitizer for it) and try connecting it to that motherboard and see if it works, if so problem fixed, if not, you may be able to take i to a phone repair place and have it fixed, though most times getting a new motherboard/device would be cheaper.

Thanks for the reply.. I have actually ordered two other "broken" phones, so I will receive them in a week or something... And I will do exactly what you suggested, to try another motherboard and see if it is a problem with the screen or motherboard. I am very sure it is the motherboard though, because the lcd and digitizer worked great just before I discovered that.
Would still appreciate answers regarding soldering this, if that is possible or not.
Solder motherboard, possible?

It seems like your missing a resistor . you can simply measure the values on the existing component and order the same value on digikey. let me know if you need help with soldering

Ah, a resistor! Not easy to know when you have no clue what it is...
How do I measure the values on the existing component? I don't really think I need any help with soldering, but pretty much everything before that... Haha
Thanks!
