Update ruined my root, what to do? - General Questions and Answers

Yeah yeah i was dumb and whatever, never update when you have root!!!! Warning to newbies!
I googled my problem like 20 times but couldnt quite find any solutions so im asking you guys what to do?
My CWM app says "This version of CWM manager should be used with CF-Root v5.0 or newer. it appears you are running a different kernel. Various features have been disabled."
So i lost superuser abilities after i did an update that was a 8mb file.
What to do? Root it again? or what?

Thank you guys it did indeed help.
Reason for asking was I didnt want to **** anything else up

Since rooting again, some apps stopped working so I uninstalled them, when i try to install them again, it says there is not enough memory when there clearly is enough memory.
What to do experiences users?

root again

Rooting and ROM upgrade question

Noob question: If I root my stock AT&T Captivate, will I need to un-root to upgrade to the final Froyo ROM when it is released?
Thanks...
You should be able to update just fine if you are rooted. I was rooted and had no problem updating OTA ATTs last update. That being said, consider the cognition ROM if you want to get the best system with the least amount of work.
Is it possible to disable OTA updates from ATT if you have a custom ROM and don't want to risk getting things screwed up?

The OTA isnt automatic. It will notify you if there is an update, but not automatically install it for you
rooting is simply just adding files to your system. No stock files are deleted. You should be able to OTA just fine while rooted and nothing else.

I had no problems doing the ota while I was rooted, lag fixed and partial bloatware removed. However on my new captivate the ota failed so I updated using kies mini and it was like I did a factory reset and I had to do a factory reset because my ext system was there but one click root didn't recognize its and said I didn't have enough space for fix.after reset I had no problems.

Obviously you didn't read enough. I posted in half of em a well as others like the guy above this post who had no problems. Might wanna lower the bs flag. Lots of people have problems, most don't. Just cause one guy posted his doesn't mean the other 99 have the same issue.
If you mess with the rom, you will have issues with any phone with any ota update.

Hi I am trying to help my friends with a phone that they are going to buy. I only know that it is a Nokia E71. I need to know if they can root it or jailbreak it. I need to know which one. Can they tether with it? Thank you. I had to Google the question and it took me here. Hopefully I can find my way back to this part of the forum!
GSM phones
I don't know if there are any GSM phones listed on this site. I entered in the Nokia E71 info in the "find your device..." box in the top right hand corner on the screen but nothing came up. I was wondering if anyone knows if the phone can be rooted or jailbreaked and if it can be used for tethering. I don't know if GSM phones from Walmart's Straight talk plan are hackable. If you would let me know it would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou.

signature 3e verification error?
it has ZERO to do with ROM manager....ROM manager is pretty much useless for the captivate
if its useless you're the first to tell me this and ive been scouring these forums for about 2 weeks and no one can seem to help me flash a custom rom

get rid of the 3e verification error and you can flash a rom. you dont need ROM manager at all.

2 weeks of reading the forum? There are people who come in here and can flash a ROM on their first day. You might want to rethink messing with your phone.
my guess is if he cant install clockwork hes either not rooted or hasn't flashed the first update.zip... probably still on 2.1. and as for the custom rom its the third sticki in the development section http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364

actually, from what i gather from the horrible description of the REAL problem here, it sounds like he is 2.2 stock with 3e recovery problem... just my guess based on him saying verification error....
the problem is that the OP is associating
SIGNATURE VERIFICATION ERROR
with ROM manager, and not bothering to look up that error message for the captivate....and it has nothing to do with ROM manager and everything to do with 3e recovery

What he said ^^^, if you can't take the time to learn at least a little about what you are doing maybe you should not be modding something that could result in a nice galaxy s version of a paper wight.
I also agree with ghost. Sounds like he is confusing the 2.
ok, actual solution
step 1. Find the search button in the Dev thread and search for "modded 3e"
step 2. Install the modded 3e with the guide
step 3. try to do the update.zip work again...
Guess how i figured that out.
I SCOURED the forum for 2 hours.

You would have to flash a rooted kernel with Odin to get root then use the sgs kernel flasher to flash the stock kernel if you want it.

I wouldn't flash anything until someone who knows more than me can explain what exactly this means and if it will help the effort to get an image of your phone.

Ive gotten this from either disabling an app or custom recovery mishap somehow i believe, not sure which. Had to restore to stock and reroot to remove custom status.

You're not running a root injected ROM or anything?
That would be somewhat interesting if you're getting this from a completely stock SGS3, but it's still not indicative of an unlocked bootloader.
I too have this icon, but that seems to be because I used Titanium Backup with root to freeze some system apps that were otherwise unfreezable.
Someone had the same thing over the weekend, stock out of box, booted up with custom boot image. he hadn't done anything to it either. proved not to be useful.
This is something that's already been discussed.
My S3 has the same behavior, and several others have reported it as well, but none of these bootloaders are unlocked.
Wow, I did try a search, and maybe if there was a separate Verizon gsiii thread it would have been easier to find it...

AT&T OTA Unsuccessful

I'm trying to update my HOX and for some reason it won't happen. My phone downloads the latest OTA (4.0.4?), the phone restarts, goes to the install screen, the progress bar gets a quarter of the way, then a phone with a red triangle pops up. I have no idea what's happening. The phone will eventually restart again, and a pop up will show up and say, "update unsuccessful, please try again later."
Can someone please shed some knowledge. I'm pretty sure this phone isn't rooted or anything. Android is pretty new to me, coming from iOS after 5 years.
It's helping you from making a mistake.
If you accept the ota, then it's lights out for you if you want to unlock or root. Search a little bit, there's a thread with a pre-rooted 2.20 update on here. I'd recommend that. Good luck!
PS: My phone did the same exact thing. I was rooted, which I undid temporarily using Voodoo Rootkeeper, and also I had uninstalled some system bloatware using Titanium Backup. That was enough to cause the ota to fail. Thankfully.

Not sure what the problem is but if your dead set on taking the update and losing the ability to root or unlock in the near future the ruu is availible in the dev section or you can download it direct from HTC dev. I would highly recommend you do a little more reading before taking the plunge

Hold your tongue before the angry mob of pitchfork-weilding purists descend on you for not wanting to root! LOL
If you're new, I guess it makes sense, but there is a lot you can do with root, pretty basic stuff, that you can't without it. Like fixing the linkify issue and unlock the tethering app, and the built in tools like flashlight and the FM tuner.
So let the ota fail all it wants while you do some homework. Then call the shot. Good luck.

i would root the phone just to remove the bloatware, AT&T installs alot of it and some your can uninstall with titanium backup some youll want to freeze to make sure it doesnt F your system up. so much crap installed out of the box. Cleanrom is good, and i have used the prerooted 2.20 update as well both are good, im currently back to cleanrom, runs stable and i dont have to go crazy freezing and removing bloat

Anyway, I upgraded my HOX using the computer RUU program from HTC's site. Can the phone still be rooted? I read something about a One-Click Root. Can someone point me in the right direction as I continue gathering knowledge
*edit*
Can the One X be downgraded back to previous firmwares? I'm on 2.20 now, from reading, it doesn't look like there's a root.

No eta most of the work on any root exploit is usually done behind the scenes more because of the fact that some previous exploits were security holes so not revealing till it is verified as working prevents att or HTC to block or patch it.
