Upgrading AT&T Nexus S i9020A to ICS and then JB? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
So I just bought a cheap Nexus S from a dude on Craigslist and want to update it to ICS via OTA, but it doesn't look like there's an update available from Gingerbread (very frustrating). I've heard that in order to upgrade the Nexus S on AT&T to JB, you've gotta have ICS first. How do I go about with this process? Or can I just flash a JB build from XDA here via CWM if I install it? Which is easier? Thanks guys!

If you want to have a clear stock ROM i think better flash stock.img, bootloader and radio via fastboot..
But if you prefere update via cmw also have a look at this.....

I'm also considering upgrading I9020A from ICS to JB.
Currently I have custom AOKP rom.
Is it possible to flash stock JB over what I have now ? if yes, how ?

Yes its possible you must flash a full image..
I´ve posted a link above there you can find the images for your phone. you have to flash it via fastboot.

If I flash a full image, do I loose Boot-Loader unlock ? Do I need to ROOT again and install CWM ?

This link explains how to have JB stock rooted. Just get the appropriate files for you phone, the OTA needed and your set. Good luck.

you don´t loose bootloader unlock, but if you flash a plain jelly bean stock you loose cmw and root
because i think JB stock ROM ereases CMW . root you loose on stock ROM´s anyway...
so you can flash this rom as an alternative:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1784666
...it´s a stockROM with a few lttle features like boot in recovery menu or battery in %
all other stuff is stock ...it´s also pre rooted and deodexed......all you need...and it don´t erease cmw while installing..
you can try ...it´s your decision..

[Q] Will rooted/flashed/ROM'd devices receive the new ICS update over the air?

Hey guys
My Nexus S is currently flashed with [CM7.1.0.1-N229] -=Nexus MV 10.19B=- |Fast&Stable|Ezekeel's Mod|Matr1x 9.0|
With the announcement by Google advising that all Nexus S devices will receive the ICS update, is there anything I need to do to my phone to receive this firmware update?
Do I need to restore back to default ROM etc, or can I leave as is?
Thanks for your help
Quentin
You won't receive the OTA, you need to be running stock for that.
Changes are that once the source is released someone will create an AOSP ROM faster than the OTA will reach you, so you could just flash that?
Greetz
don't worry
CM7 and other group will have ICS based-on ROM
so , only thing you may worry is how long you gonna wait
beside , you always can flash ICS stock ROM if you don't wanna wait anymore , don't you think ?
anyone have any idea on when the ICS update will come to NS4G?

what if my phone is rooted then i have backup of my stock rom. does my stock rom receives ota update? what do you think so?
You should receive an OTA if you restore the stock image and one is available.
Would you need the stock recovery if you do receive the ota?

Rooting is required to Install ICS..?
Hi.
Can I install ICS without rooting my phone...? My phone is unlocked...
Thanks
You will NOT receive an OTA update unless you're running Android on a stock unrooted device. The only way you will run Ice Cream Sandwich is if you find an ICS ROM but most of them are in alpha stages, meaning not suitable for daily use.

You'll receive the OTA on a stock rooted rom as well, just like every other OTA.

Unlikely. Most OTAs do not do an assert on recovery and flash without any issue with CWM. If you've modified anything it does assert though it will fail.

It won't install though so you still won't be able to OTA ICS.

Why wouldn't it? Every other OTA has had no problem installing through CWM on a rooted stock system. Unless this OTA decides to assert recovery for some reason (the only reason it would fail as it would then be trying to patch recovery).

How to prepare nexus s for ice cream sandwich ota

Currently running miui with matrix kernel and I'm looking into flashing a stock gingerbread ROM to receive ics when it is released. I've flashed customs ROMs before but have never gone back to stock. How do I go about doing this? Will I need to reroot my phone? And will I be able to flash a kernel on the stock ROM? Thanks

I wouldn't worry about it. Someone kind will post it here in a zip file soon after release i would imagine!

This is not necessary; somebody will almost certainly post a zip of it here you can flash.

If someone makes one, sure.
sorry for abusing you thread, mokflurry, but i also have a question regarding requirements for the upcoming ota-update.
i am running stock rom, rooted, with cwm and custom kernel.
regarding the recovery, i already read, that this shouldn't be a problem. can anybody confirm that?
and what about the kernel? will i have to return to complete stock for ota?
thanks in advance!

You can be rooted with another recovery, But need stock rom and kernel.
Until and unless you believe that you will be the first one to get the OTA, you need not worry about the OTA. It will be up on XDA as soon as OTA is rolled and you be flashing it even before the OTA is actually is pushed to you

Go to http://www.androidsu.com and download the Superuser-3.0.7.zip file, flash that in ClockworkMod recovery. Done. Simple as that.
I think the universal root method should still work fine. I flashed the single zip through CWM recovery awhile back on 4.0.3 without issue, so I doubt you'd have trouble with 4.0.4 (unless something major changed).
Or just install push recovery image thru adb and install custom android 4.0.4 rom already rooted by team eos...

Yeah, I like the TeamEOS flavor of ICS. I can't guarantee it working on your Brazilian xoom, however, if you can use it, it is a great rom. It provides a very stock experience but with many more features that compliment Android 4.0.4 without bloat. There are both nightlies and stable versions, both get updated (when you flash newer versions in recovery) so you won't miss out on any new features. And yes, it is rooted for you.
Of course, there are plenty of other equally great roms from other great developers to try out in case TeamEOS's rom doesn't fit your needs (or if you get flashing-fever).
Just saying, I am not to be held responsible for any damage (yes, there are risks) that happens to anything because of this post.
Hope that helped.
Cheers
It does work on Brazilian xoom. Team EOS rocks.

Oh, if that's the case and if the OP is still interested, unlocking the bootloader, flashing solarnz's recovery and flashing a pre-rooted rom (like EOS) might be the way to go. It also might be worth mentioning that rooting, unlocking the bootloader, and certainly flashing a new rom would probably *void* the warranty on the Xoom.
Just for good measure, I am not to be held responsible for any damage (yes, there are risks) that happens to anything because of this post.
Please read this procedure carefully the one I have shared on xda to root and flash custom ICS ROM on MZ601. The only difference in your case is to download and flash the rom for MZ604.

if you are rooted, just install an ICS ROM. (it will also block any JB OTA)
if you are not rooted - get rooted.

Lol, I just said that.
Well, I know another way... But it can take time...
Get the Stock imgs for Xoom and flash them (beware you'll lost ALL your data, even your precious photos and songs!), then you update until ICS again...
Or get rooted.

[Q] Bootloader Upgrade

So my tablet is currently on the 10.4.2.17 firmware for the bootloader. I need to upgrade it to the latest. How would one go about doing that without flashing back to stock? I am currently on CM 10.1. Is there a way to only flash the bootloader to the tablet?
Well I flashed back to stock to upgrade. Oh well, haha
