Is there any app tah really locks the auto rotate function?
I've got a non rooted transformer, honeycomb 3.2 and use it frequently in bed. i find very annoying to have to tap on lower right corner and then open settings and then slide the auto rotation off.
I've already tried different apps like power control plus, beautiful widgets, autorotate ofOff, auto-rotate switch, auto rotate widget and many others like them but all of them simply recall the previuous state when i've manually locked the screen orientation with the method above.
so i'm looking for an app/widget that behaves like asus native lock orientation, or if there is a sort of macro creator that records taps and then create a shrotcut?
I've been looking for the same thing as well. Tried a few widgets like Widgetsoid.
Seriously? Tap the notification clock panel, hit the button that looks like this -|-|-|, and then hit Auto-Rotate off...
Do you guys actually try before you post?

I guess you didn't read the OP...
I've tried various solutions as well, including the above "helpful" suggestion. Rotation lock on the TF doesn't work very well. I'm not sure if this is an Android thing, or a TF thing though...

Maybe is for my bad english but please read my question before criticize:
I've already know your suggested method and actually i'm using it as it is the only one that really works.
but i have to tap once to open the notification panel, tap once again to open the settings panel, then slide the rotation lock (wich sometimes doesn't slide and requires some tries) and then tap again to close the settings panel.
so i was looking for an alternative that involves less tapping.
i've tried some apps and windgets but none of them works as they simply recall the last locked state operated by the method above (if i locked the screen in portrait using asus notification panel, activating the widget rotates and locks the screen in portrait no matter if it was in landscape - of course applications that has fixed orientation maintains their orientation).
Pretty funny. At least you provided an answer

God forbid you have to tap more than 1 time...
If you really can't tap more than 3 times, go write an app that does it in a swipe gesture.

this one might work for you but I think they all are simply other ways of turning on and off rotate in android, and nothing special beyond the method.

WOW, nobody read his post at all. He's saying that he is looking for an APP/WIDGET that will allow him to control auto rotate and have the auto rotate preference still set AFTER he turns his tablet back on. Stop criticizing him for asking for help. He already said he knows about the setting in the panel, but wants another way. Instead of calling him lazy you could go to the Market and begin trying apps out and see which one works.
Back on topic I have tried the following 2 apps and they seem to work fine for me, even after a few screen offs and ons and a few minutes sitting screen off the settings were still set properly. However if the first one does not work for you the second app just puts a quick shortcut in your notifications. Effectively cutting your taps from 3 to 2.
Auto Rotate On/Off by CurveFish
Auto Rotate Switch by Kenneth Cheng
Tried them both - nope, it still won't work properly. Sorry, but thanks for suggestion anyway. Msybe honeycomb handles auto-rotation switching differently.
I've had my S3 for a couple of weeks now, and while I've decided to abstain from the ROM merry go round for the time being, I have a list of things I'd like to see:
1. Changeable mouse pointer. It's too small and I can't really see it very well.
2. I don't see a way to select the back/menu/home buttons with my Bluetooth mouse.
3. I have the MHL adapter and need to be able to change the overscan in landscape mode. Also audio won't come out of the HDMI interface.
Otherwise it's an amazing device. This is a pretty short list, maybe I'll come up with more later. So far so good.
Pet Peeve 1 can be fixed by going on the "ROM merry go round"
1.) group sms in the stock messaging app does not properlywork
2.) Vibration cant be customized for notifications wit the built in program that lets you change vibration patterns

Yeah, that's what I was wondering. If I can find enough reasons to make me want to switch.
No "Stay awake while charging"
Unlocked Verizon GS3
For me, No Google Wallet...
Things I have issues with currently:
Wifi is off, would you like to turn it on? or there are wireless networks available notifications. I have them disabled when opening a high data app with mobile data enabled, they still popup and are super annoying. There is a hack I need to try for this.
The MTP mount for media transfer to your SD card. It requires special drivers and makes it difficult to transport many files at once to or from and does not allow it to mount UMS (universal mass storage) which previously was the standard to work with car radios, dvd players, etc. I have a hack in place using a script now that allows me to mount UMS for my external SDCard, but is still an annoyance.
If you use a 32GB or greater sdcard, it has to be formatted by the phone or in windows to extfat32, which is an enhanced version of the FAT32 file system allowing for greater than 4GB files and a less heavy table of contents using more processing. This would be great except its Microsoft proprietary and because Samsung doesn't have the full specs on it, it loses and corrupts files on the card quickly when you start using it. Also, ROMS cannot support it, it was designed by MS to be hazardous to open source and GNU licensing. There are tools you can download to format FAT32, which I have had to do.
S Voice, it kind of blows. I miss my quick button press to open google voice command which is roughly 5x better, now S Voice is opened when I double tap home and I have to unlock my phone and go to the google widget and hit the mic to call on google voice which lowers the convenience of voice commands drastically.
The Samsung internet browser is lacking. It does not resize text to fit the screen on double tap properly and makes it more difficult despite the large screen. It keeps webpages loaded in memory even after reboot unless you close them in the window manager which you have to scroll to the top of the page and click a button instead of being in the menu button menu. It opens a new window often when I click on links....
The modem and radios are weak and unstable at times. I am constantly dropping my data connection in known good areas and with wifi. To top it off, I get the wifi notification AGAIN to connect to a network when that happens.
It has an overactive screen auto brightness which makes pics I view look like crap when they are actually not too bad if the screen wasn't on minimum brightness.
Settings are not in great order. There are three different settings and areas portraying just to haptic feedback. Did you enable it under sounds? What about disabling it being disabled again by default every time power saving mode is enabled? Did you change the vibration power from zero? Um....
Samsung has way too many unnecessary notifications of its own cluttering the notification screen. I get four from just plugging in headphones. Wireless notification is always there by default.
Boot time can be much faster, its actually internally boot looping in order to check authenticity of system files to void warranty claims if custom. The new unlocked boot loader boots in at least half the time, maybe less. Don't like the 4G LTE boot logo or loud unnecessary noise on boot either.
Verizon is dumbing down the search in the next OTA update and all phones from mid-July already are updated because of the apple patent lawsuit that disallows searching of local content on a mobile device on devices not running iOS!? I know I'm not taking that update.
Thank you thank you thank you for the unlocked bootloader leak now.
Things I like:
This list would be long, but I'm just going to say it is an amazing device for media consumption with its screen and features, battery life is impressive, the cameras are great, its fairly smooth and fast in navigation, and it just looks great now that I've got a case on it. Makes iPhones look fat and stubby. I have been having a blast with NFC tags, put one on my chest freezer to automatically open up the drink up page on untappd for checkins when I grab a beer. Soon I'll be making a few pages online that I can edit so that I can program NFC tags with the links and remotely manage the content they bring up.

I switched to the Chrome browser which is a lot better than the stock one. I like that I can sync pages from my desktops.
It doesn't have reception as well as a Motorola would/did. Not sure if these upcoming updates will make reception better but I get weak reception in places my DX never had a problem with. Probably jump on a RAZR around tax time if nothing improves by then... Only issue

I use another app called "Stay Awake." It's nothing more than a 1x1 widget. Although, every time I reboot my phone, I need to toggle the widget again. The setting doesn't stick on a reboot.

Although, Chrome doesn't reflow text to fit zoom in/out of a page. Neither does the stock browser, as mentioned previously.
Opera mobile browser is my new default on the Galaxy S III and has been quite fast, reflows zoomed text wonderfully and Opera Link provides a synch with desktop Opera.

Has my S3 for 3 days now.
By Droid Bionic never left 4g (after the leaked ice cream update). S3 4g coverage is spotty and not as strong when I do have it.
I miss my bionic's "Full brightness when viewing pictures" option also.

Yeah, it's great as long as you don't zoom... but the detail while zoomed is terrible...
haven't done any searches for it recently, I'm assuming since you guys mentioned it there's no fixes for it still...
I have searched here and the web for a method to change the lock screen camera app that 4.4 uses.
I initially selected the default 4.4 camera as the lock screen camera to use, and am now regretting that decision...
Has anyone figured out a non-rooted way to change which camera app the lock screen uses?
Can you go into settings, applications, find the camera app and select the remove defaults option? In theory that should allow it to prompt you next time.
If it doesn't work, then the camera app probably has deep integration with the lock screen (usually for security).

I use Widgetlocker, not stock, but had the same issue. What I had to do was go Settings>Apps>Camera and clear defaults. Next time you swipe from the side it will ask which camera app you want to use.

The method described above works. I've tried this too. Unfortunately after clearing the defaults and trying again I could only choose between the stock app and Focal. I have about 5 more camera apps (was trying out which one I liked most) but none of them showed up as an option. It seems the maker of the camera app you want must use a specific api to make the camera available for the lock screen.
I want to prevent certain apps from being launched on my phone unless a pattern-lock is entered.
I've tried various solutions from the Play Store, but they're all clumsy, ugly and/or don't work properly (the most common issue is the 'protected app' is shown on the screen for 300ms or so, before the 'lock/protecting app' kicks in and draws the pattern-entry screen on top of it).
I'm sure there must be a simple Xposed solution for this?

Yes, it has the same problem that most of them have, ie. there is a delay between the 'protected app' launching, and the time when App Lock kicks in - meaning the supposedly protected app is visible for a fraction of a second. That's not good enough.
Tasker has a keylock function like what you've described. Just gave it a try and seems to work pretty well. The app you are trying to launch does actually show up for a split second before the lock screen shows up on top (you can select whether it's in an overlay window or full screen). You then need to enter the code to go back to the app. Couldn't find any obvious way to bypass it. It doesn't have a maximum attempt option, though so you probably want a reasonably long PIN. If you disable the cancel button (that will send you back to home screen) then the whole phone will be locked until you enter the code (or reboot).
If you have Tasker or plan to try it, the task is called "Lock" under "Display". You'll have to assign it to an "App" profile so it's automatically triggered when you launch the app.

Sorry, I misunderstood your original post. I thought the lockscreen app was showing up not the app you're trying to protect. So tasker won't be any better.
---------- Post added at 08:25 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:17 AM ----------
One other thing you could try is enabling multiple users and set up restrictions on one account to disable those applications all together. Never tried this feature so don't know how easy that would be.

That's an interesting solution, but I don't think it's workable for me.
I'm essentially a lazy person and hence I have no pattern/pin security on my phone for day to day use - it's just too much hassle. What I'm trying to achieve is:
1: an interim security measure for certain apps/media/docs if I lose the phone, until I can send a remote "kill" signal
2: protection from friends and my nephew (who I often hand the phone to) from launching certain apps.
Logging in and out of different profiles is way too much work for me whereas a pattern lock on certain apps (which I might use 10 times a day perhaps) is less of a chore.
Is there any alternatives ? I've been trying to find something that allows me to game without getting interrupted by notifications and phone calls.
Does the new 5.1.1 update includes interruption mode?

I stumbled upon Omni Swipe earlier today. I haven't actually used the Samsung version but I'm guessing that it's every bit as piss poor as the rest of their bloatware.
TBH it's turning out to be just the right side of just turning the ringer off. Alerts for banned apps still one though, buy in the form of tiny red dots in the bottom corner. Definitely a good one for gamers and for getting actual work done on the phone as well.

I reckon you're doing it wrong. I'm using it like an insecure Knox so that I don't get distracted when I am working.

Surely anything more would involve muting phone calls and notifications?

I just set it up normally. Think you're right and it is just a launcher. I'd you turn offence notification sounds and include apps for notifications the red dot at the bottom notifies you.
Why don't you just turn off the sounds?

Go to Settings-Applications -Applications Manager. Choose your conflicting app. Uncheck Show Notifications.
Once you've enabled Omni Swipe, the first time after that you open your game or whatever there's a pop-up at the bottom of the screen that offers to enable no interruption mode for that app.
